  • Hello Streisand Effect: Takedown Hall of Shame Grows by Four

(The Streisand Effect describes the phenomenon by which an attempt to suppress information results in faster, broader dissemination of that information. Roughly explained, attempted censorship — particularly by a famous or well-known entity — can flag the information as more interesting.)

Last October, we launched the Takedown Hall of Shame to highlight the most egregious attempts to silence speech online with bogus intellectual property complaints. Today, we’re inducting four more would-be censors into the pantheon of speech bullies. They are:

    • Peabody Energy, for issuing outstandingly spurious trademark claims against a spoof site criticizing their “clean coal” group;
    • Yahoo, for an impressive attempt to return a cat to the bag after a leak of its guide to snooping services for law enforcement was posted to a whistleblower site;
    • Perez Hilton and the Miss Universe Organization for endeavoring to stop a non-profit from airing an ad commenting on a public same-sex marriage controversy initiated by their videos; and
    • Universal Music Group, for attempting to muzzle online criticism of the rapper Akon.

The antidote for speech you disagree with is more speech — not overreaching legal threats. Hopefully, we’ll see companies exercise more discretion and transparency when dealing with speech they dislike, instead of reaching for the nearest blunt legal instruments.

  • Sound Generator Could Kill Humans at Ten Meters [Weapons]

This seems like a harmless tube. In fact, it was harmless: Israeli farmers used the first version to scare birds from crop fields. Then, somebody converted it into a crowd dispersion mechanism. And then, they discovered it could kill.

The Thunder Generator uses mixture of liquefied petroleum, cooking gas, and air to create explosions, which in return generate shock waves capable of stunning people from 30 to 100 meters away. At that range, the weapon is absolutely harmless, making people run in panic when they feel the sonic blast hitting their bodies. However, at less than ten meters, the Thunder Generator could either cause permanent damage or kill any person.

It comes in a single-barrel configuration, but according to the manufacturer—ArmyTec—you can mount it everywhere, and combine it with other barrels to create even more powerful design. You can even mount several cannons on different places, and synchronize them so you can create a sound barrier perimeter capable of dissuading your enemies. In fact, you can even make the sonic wave to turn 90 degrees to fire around corners, all by using a curved barrel design.

I can wait these people to install a sightly-lower power version of these things in raving clubs everywhere. My bones and ears are not crushed enough. [Thunder Generator via Defense News]

  • Use Internet Explorer, says Microsoft, but stop using IE6

    Why-you-dont-use-Internet-Explorer
So Google got hacked, or something, by cyber criminals in China, and Microsoft has acknowledged that their Internet Explorer browser was part of the problem. Specifically, Interent Explorer version 6 was part of the problem, and Microsoft is quick to point out that version 8 is much better, and much more secure. Cliff Evans, Microsoft’s Head of Security and Privacy in the UK, further states that switching away from Internet Explorer is also a bad idea. According to him, it’s MSIE8 or nothing. Firefox? Chrome? Safari? Opera? None of those will keep you as safe from cyber attacks as Microsoft’s Internet Explorer version 8.

Is that true? Microsoft’s Windows — in all its incarnations — is the most popular operating system on planet earth, meaning that if you’re looking to attacks something, attacking Windows is a fairly safe place to start. Similarly, if Internet Explorer is the de facto browser of choice, attacking it will yield a better-than-average chance of finding and exploiting a vulnerability. If you’re trying to attack an Opera exploit, for example, you’re going to be waiting a long time for some poor Opera user to visit your malicious website, simply because there aren’t many Opera users in the world.

Ed Bott makes a rather breathless attack against anyone still using MSIE6, claiming It’s time to stop using IE6 on his ZDNet blog. In general, I agree with the notion that there’s been ample time to move away from MSIE6; but the unfortunate reality is that there’s a bit of a chicken-and-egg problem with doing so. Until a software vendor certifies that a browser works correctly with their product, most organizations are reluctant to declare that browser a supported product (even though the browser may work flawlessly with the software). IE8 is a case in point: it works with Peoplesoft, but since Oracle (owners of Peoplesoft) haven’t certified IE8 on various Peoplesoft products and versions, it remains “use at your own risk”. If an organization wants to continue to enjoy receiving technical support, they need to use the application vendor’s supported browser versions, and the application vendor may be in no particular rush to certify a new browser version.

The bottom line? Whenever possible use the latest version of your preferred browser, whichever one that might be.

  • Human power stored to assist riding the bicycle!

    bicx01.jpg
Now here’s a bicycle I’ve always been patiently waiting for. A bicycle that charges its own battery with human power, has a booster and also is foldable. Isn’t that just too cool? Using its very own lithium-ion-polymer battery, the “BiCX” recharges with human power. The charging happens even while pedaling and also when free-riding down the hill, for instance. During one of the three modes, the bike uses the power stored up to pick up faster while slow pedaling. Also a major portion of the power is used during the booster mode when lots of power is supplemented. This is one good use of human power.

  • Nicolaï Syadristy’s Micro Miniature Museum

    Ordino, Andorra | Unique Collections

It is only fitting that Ukrainian Nicolaï Siadristy’s micro miniature museum should be in the little town of Ordino, in the pint-sized country of Andorra.

Widely considered the world’s best microminiaturist, Nicolaï Siadristy has a lifetime’s worth of tiny creations on display in this museum. What does a microminiturist create? A tray complete with a wine bottle and glasses all set on a grain of salt, or the human being at various stages of life, represented on a gold thread 400 times thinner than a human hair.

Each work in the museum is a masterpiece that took around half a year to create, and each must be viewed through a microscope. The favorite among all viewers is the caravan of camels trudging toward a pyramid and palm tree, all nestled within the eye of a needle.

  • Iraq wants to turn ancient Jewish tomb into mosque

Israeli professor informed Iraqi authorities engaged in erasing Jewish characteristics off Prophet Ezekiel’s tomb located south of Baghdad

Some 2,500 years ago the prophet Ezekiel presented his Prophecy of Dry Bones, which according to various interpretations hailed the salvation of the Jewish people. According to recent reports, Iraq is currently trying to remove the Jewish traces from the prophet’s tomb and turn it into a mosque.

Ezekiel the Prophet, whose prophesy was recorded in the Book of Ezekiel, lived in Babylon at the time of Solomon’s temple. Tradition has it that he is buried in the village of Al Kilf, south of Baghdad, and followers of the three monotheistic religions continue to visit his tomb to this day.

"I received information from a senior Iraqi scholar pertaining to the local authorities’ intention of turning the tomb into a mosque under the guise of ‘preservation’ of the holy site," says Professor Shmuel Morre, former head of the Arabic Language and Literature Department in the Hebrew University.

"The man who provided me with the information stressed that the Iraqi antiquities department has been under heavy pressure to erase any proof of the Jews’ connection to Iraq," he notes.

Iraq also contains the tombs of the Ezra the Scribe, the Prophet Jonah and King Zedekiah. According to Prof. Morre, who himself was born in Iraq, his colleague informed him that local authorities have already began erasing Hebrew inscriptions off Ezekiel’s tomb in order to turn the site into a mosque.

    ‘Stop Islamization’
For hundreds of years the tomb has been under the care of leaders of the Jewish community in Iraq.

Currently the country contains only eight Jews. The rest have become Muslim or are in hiding for fear of being murdered by terrorists upon embarking on a Jewish pilgrimage.

Manager of the "Justice for Jews" organization Shlomo Alfassa has approached US government authorities in Washington following the reports and demanded to "stop the Islamization of the Jewish prophet’s tomb."

An application has also been made to the UNESCO headquarters, which is responsible for maintaining the religious character of holy sites.

    http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7…832780,00.html

So, it is not about the land of Israel. It is, obviously, that Muslim hates Jews, Judaism and G-d. What’s going on?
Yet, you Arabs always say, no no we dont hate Jews, we only hate Zionists and blah blah. But, the tomb of Ezekiel has nothing to do with Zionism!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Render 41 300x199 Quirky Space Bar is So Much More than a USB Hub We all could use more USB ports but usually they aren’t very steamlined or actually they take up more clutter on your desk than it’s worth. The Space Bar from Quirky is designed to house your desktop clutter while also providing additional USB ports for your gadgets. It also has a very apple-like design concept which we totally dig. Use The Space Bar shelf to store any desk items and at the end of the day, simply slide your keyboard into the designated space below the shelf and return in the morning to a neat and organized office space. This device can stow a keyboard up to 18″ long by 1.5″ high. , The Space Bar has 6 USB ports and 1 USB cable in the back to connect it to your computer. The Space Bar will retail for $42.00.

  • Tafoni encourages living in Houseboats to benefit environment

    tafoni.jpg
The Tafoni Floating Home is a conceptual project from designer Joanna Borek-Clement. As we all know general boathouses often make a person feel homesick since they aren’t really comfortable as far as their design is concerned. In Tafoni Floating Home, the ceiling is of a good height and it looks very spacious. This is definitely a good change from the maddening crowds and city streets. In urban sites the construction debris associated with demolition and remodel of an existing building typically adds to the global refuse problem. Houseboats, as opposed to traditional homes, have no foundations that permanently impact the land. The environmental goal of this project is to give Tafoni owners the flexibility and options that are invaluable in an environmentally conscious lifestyle.

  • GURUFOCUS VIDEO: Donald Yackt Comments on the Kraft Foods Deal for Cadbury Plc

Donald Yacktman, chief investment officer at Yacktman Asset Management Co., talks with Bloomberg’s Betty Liu about Kraft Foods Inc.’s agreement to buy Cadbury Plc for 11.9 billion pounds ($19.7 billion). The takeover ends four months of resistance from Cadbury and creates the world’s largest confectioner.

Yacktman likes the accepted deal includes more cash and less stock than deals offered before. Because of that, he thinks the deal will be earning accretive in the earning in the next year.

Yackman thinks strategically, the deal is good for Kraft as the company has been seeking for international expansion and new products to distribute on a worldwide basis for a couple of years.

Yackman acknowledge that Warren Buffett’s earlier comment about Kraft’s using of undervalued Kraft stock to buy Cadbury caused the Kraft stock to go up.

First up, Ed Whitacre’s somewhat inscrutable claims about the Chevrolet Volt’s pricing and profitability. Staying with talk of prices, we move on to mooted pricing figures for the 2011 Ford Mustang. Staying in Dearborn, we touch on the likelihood that a version of the Ford F-150 will replace the severely aged Ford Ranger. • How Just A Little Bit Of Shade Can Make Solar Panels Completely Worthless

Shaded solar panels obviously produce less power than unshaded ones, but most consumers are unaware that just a small shadow on a huge surface area of panels can recude photovoltiac module power by 50%.

Depending on how much shade a collection of panels regular sees, this can make having solar power cost more money than it saves.

As SolarFeeds.com points out, 95% of solar systems installed today use “String Inverters,” which make having one shaded solar panel akin to having a dead battery in an electric gadget that requires more than one.

The figure below diagrams just how much a little shade can take away from a bed of panels.

  • Out of the spotlight, Israel and Vatican negotiate holy sites

Vatican flag in Jerusalem, Reuters photo by Baz Ratner

Vatican flags raised outside Jerusalem's Old City before Pope Benedict's visit, 6 May 2009/Baz Rattner

There have been a series of significant and highly publicised events recently in Vatican-Jewish relations.

Pope Benedict put his predecessor Pius XII along the road to Roman Catholic sainthood last month, angering many Jews who accused the wartime pope of turning a blind eye to the Nazi Holocaust.  Benedict defended the move this week during his first visit to Rome’s synagogue, which prompted Israel to ask the pope to open up the Vatican archives covering Pius’ reign between 1939-1958.

But behind the scenes, out of the spotlight, the Catholic church and Jewish state have restarted efforts to put to rest a property dispute in the Holy Land that goes back much further than World War Two or Israel’s founding in 1948. Churches acquired large amounts of land around Jerusalem as the Ottoman empire went into decline from the early 19th century. Today, many official Israeli buildings sit on leased church land. But agreement on the legal status of these properties has evaded governments and popes for decades.

After Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu took office early last year, his Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon was made pointman in a push to settle the decades-old  debate.  Ayalon was at the Vatican last month to try to narrow divides over six religious sites, including what is believed by Christians to be the Cenacle of the Last Supper, whose future status remains uncertain. Negotiating teams held a meeting again this month, which ended with the vague statement that they “did useful work in atmosphere of cordaility” and that they would meet again. Ayalon heads to the Vatican again in May.

The Vatican got some unexpected support last week from a prominent rabbi who is active in Christian-Jewish dialogue and attended the pope’s visit to the Rome synagogue. Rabbi David Rosen, the British-born international director of interreligious affairs of the American Jewish Committee, told the Israeli newspaper Haaretz that Israel’s behaviour toward the Vatican since they agreed to diplomatic relations in 1993 has been “outrageous.”

    pope rosen

Rabbi David Rosen (left) in delegation greeting Pope Benedict at Rome's main synagogue 17 Jan 2010/Max Rossi

“Any (other) country would have threatened to withdraw its ambassador long ago over Israel’s failure to honour agreements,” he  said.  Rosen said the Vatican agreed to diplomatic relations after Israel said it would  recognise the legal status of Catholic institutions and exempt their property in Israel from taxes.

This was supposed to take about two years, he said, but this has not still not happened. Rosen told Haaretz the  Vatican wanted its local hierarchy to be recognised under Israeli law and treated as a whole organisation, rather than treating each Catholic church as a separate nonprofit organisation as is now the case. Israeli bureaucrats wore down the Vatican by negotiating every tax clause separately instead of granting a general concession, as the Vatican expected them to do, Rosen said.

Neither side expects a deal to be reached in the next few months, officials say. But were an agreement to emerge, it would certainly set a precedent in Israel’s future land transactions with religious institutions and perhaps play a part in further improving Vatican-Jewish relations.

  • T7 Extreme Review

t7-extremeT7 Extreme is a diet pill that claims it will:
    “-Release stubborn fat
    -Enhance metabolic rate
    -Limit fat storage
    -Promote positive mood” (website).

This T7 Extreme review will detail the ingredients contained in T7 Extreme as well as reveal the costs associated to help you determine if this is the answer to your diet pill needs.

    T7 Extreme Ingredients

Zinc Aspartate is an amino acid. It does not contribute to weight loss.
Fucoxanthin is from brown seaweed. It has been tested only on rodents. Even those tests did not show weight loss.
Salix Mastunda is an anti-inflammatory. It does not cause weight loss.
3,5-Dihydroxy Phenylacetate is supposed to improve thyroid function; it has not been proven to contribute to weight loss.

As you can see, T7 Extreme diet pills do not contain many ingredients that have been proven to cause weight loss. By itself, it probably won’t do much. T7 Extreme, however, is designed to be an addition to other Cellucor weight loss products (like D4 Thermal Shock), and hence may be an effective additive to be used with these other products.

    T7 Extreme Cost

T7 Extreme diet pills cost $62.99. If you take the recommended 3 capsules per day, one bottle of T7 Extreme will last you a month. This is on the expensive side for a diet pill. As mentioned, you’re recommended to take it combined with other Cellucor products, which can make it rather expensive.

    T7 Extreme Instructions

The Cellucor website says you should take T7 Extreme for 4 weeks and then take the next 4 weeks off. Companies sometimes recommend taking time off from taking the product because the product can cause potential damage.

I asked a customer service representative why they recommend taking time off and he said the receptors in the brain cause you to build up an immunity to T7 Extreme if you take it for more than 4 weeks.

    T7 Extreme Customer Service

I contacted a customer service representative via the live chat on the Cellucor website. Although a lot of diet pill companies use automated answers on their “live chats”, Cellucor actually uses real people on their chats. I was actually very impressed with the knowledge of the representative.

    T7 Extreme Conclusion

This T7 Extreme review finds this product contains no clinically proven ingredients; thus, there is no reason to believe it will actually cause weight loss by itself. When combined with other Cellucor products, however, it may help in the effectiveness. In addition, T7 Extreme is rather expensive.

Nếu bạn có một chút bộ não, chắc bạn đã biết chỉ có những kẻ hèn mạt mới Bịt Miệng những kẻ nói ra những gì ít người biết.

I was never taught this part of history when I was young. Hmmmm….

  • What next for biodiversity protection in the EU?

19 January 2010, Brussels. Today the European Commission marked the opening of the International Year of Biodiversity with a paper setting out future options for biodiversity policy. Despite past efforts, species extinctions are continuing at alarming rates, and a new vision is required to halt these losses. The Communication sets out a vision and outlines four possible targets to reach it, with different levels of ambition. The aim is to launch and facilitate a debate between Member States with a view to developing a post-2010 biodiversity policy framework for the EU before the end of the year. New targets are needed, as the current EU and global biodiversity targets expire after 2010.

Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas said: “We will step up our efforts and put in place a new policy and strategy for the post-2010 period. We need a new vision and target for biodiversity considering the on-going loss of species and signalling the importance we attach to this issue. We cannot afford to turn our backs on the fight against biodiversity loss, and a high level of ambition to underpin our policy in the coming period is essential.”
