  • An Ad For Apple’s Original Tablet, the Newton [Apple Tablet]

The Newton might be in the valley between an iPhone and Apple’s upcoming tablet, but it’s essentially Apple’s first stab at the form factor. And here’s how they promoted it.

Setting aside the ’90s taint on the ad, it’s strange to see how much Apple pumped the faxing angle on the Newton in its subsequent TV spots, which we’ll be revisiting soon.

  • NIA: Seniors Should Take Precautions To Avoid Hypothermia

Seniors should take precautions to avoid hypothermia, says NIA In addition to producing high heating bills, the cold weather that has gripped much of the country poses health dangers related to hypothermia, especially in the elderly. However, there are ways to protect oneself from excessive loss of body heat both at home and outdoors.

Hypothermia occurs when body temperature falls to 96 degrees Fahrenheit or less. Its symptoms include slowed or slurred speech, sleepiness or confusion, shivering or stiffness in the arms and legs, poor control over body movements or slow reactions as well as a weak pulse.

According to the National Institute on Aging (NIA), seniors are particularly vulnerable to hypothermia due to underlying medical conditions and because they tend to be less active than younger people and produce less body heat.

Consequently, NIA experts recommend keeping the temperature of the home at a minimum of 68 degrees. To stay warm inside it is a good idea to wear long underwear, socks and slippers. A blanket can be used to keep legs and shoulders comfortable, while a hat or cap can warm the head.

Venturing outdoors, it is important to wear a scarf and gloves or mittens to prevent loss of body heat through the hands and feet. A hat is particularly important because a significant portion of body heat loss occurs through the head.

In addition, wearing several layers of warm loose clothing can help keep warm air close to the body.

Finally, NIA advises seniors to check with their healthcare providers as some medicines may increase the risk of hypothermia.

  • Alumna, staff member recognized for their efforts to foster, promote diversity

Alumna, staff member recognized for their efforts to foster, promote diversity

“Selfless” and “tireless” were the key words used to describe the winners of the 2010 University of Chicago Diversity Leadership Awards presented at the President’s MLK reception Thursday, Jan. 14.

The reception was part of the University’s celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King.

“I have the honor of recognizing two individuals whose work has embodied Dr. King’s values,” said President Robert Zimmer.

“It gives me great pleasure to be recognizing two people who have made strong contributions to the diversity of the University.”

Duel Richardson (AB ’67), Director of Neighborhood Relations/Education in the Office of Civic Engagement, received the 2010 Diversity Leadership Staff Award. Evette Cardona (AM ’98), a graduate of the School of Social Service Administration, received the 2010 Diversity Leadership Alumni Award.

This is the second year the Diversity Leadership Council – appointed in 2007 by Zimmer to support diversity on campus, in relationships in the surrounding neighborhoods and with the University’s business partners – has given the Diversity Leadership Awards.

Julie Peterson, Vice President of Communications, and Ken Warren, Deputy Provost for Research and Minority Issues, and the Fairfax M. Cone Distinguished Service Professor in English Language & Literature and the College oversee the work of the council as its co-chairs, and they introduced the two diversity leaders at the reception.

Cardona, founder of Amigas Latinas and a program officer for the Polk Brothers Foundation, serves on boards of the Donors Forum of Illinois, Chicago Latinos in Philanthropy, and the Center on Halsted.

Amigas Latinas is a non-profit, grassroots community women’s organization that serves and advocates on behalf of the Latina lesbian, bisexual, queer, questioning, and transgender community.

“The diversity leadership awards are on some level about selflessness, about seeking to provide others with opportunities and promise and hope,” said Peterson, who introduced Cardona. “There are few who embody this spirit of openness and selflessness more than Evette Cardona.”

When Cardona founded Amigas Latinas 15 years ago, few such programs existed for women, much less Latina women, Peterson said. “Today this program has grown to a large and respectable organization that is making a real difference in people’s lives,” she said.

“Those who have met Evette have experienced her selflessness first hand, this feeling that all are welcome and at home, and that each of us can be comfortable and free in our own life. Amigas Latinas is aptly named; when you are with the organization, or with Evette, you are with friends.”

Richardson, a 1967 graduate of the College, has founded or helped advance several University initiatives, including the Chicago Public Schools/University of Chicago Internet Project, the Neighborhood Schools Program, and the Collegiate Scholars Program.

“For over 30 years, Duel Richardson has poured his heart and soul into the creation of a truly diverse University of Chicago,” said Warren. “Students throughout Chicago, in particular on the city’s South Side, benefit directly from Duel’s efforts.”

Richardson is known around campus and in the community as a champion of programs and an innovator who has the energy and savvy to generate great ideas and bring them to fruition, Warren said.

“Duel approaches his work with tireless intensity and positive spirit and has been a leader in getting the University to the point where it is today, as a truly committed partner in the well-being and opportunity of all members in our community,” he said.

“One common theme in the letters nominating Duel for this award was a sense that he has often forsaken individual acknowledgment for the greater good of the University and community. This man is a believer. And we are all better off for his efforts.”

That theme of humility was evident in Richardson’s acknowledgement of the recognition.

“I’m kind of stunned by this,” he said after receiving the award. “There are so many other people I would have wrapped my arms around to bring with me, if I could have. We’re all in this together.”

Cardona said the work itself is inspiring. “It’s always an honor and quite humbling to be recognized for one’s work, even though it is not necessary, since the work is reward in itself. It is work that is good for the soul, I believe. Yet it is truly an honor to be chosen for an award conferred by this prestigious university, where I came to hone my skills and vision as a social worker and an activist,” Cardona said.

  • Northern Ireland’s Favourite Abroad destination

Thought about opening a thread to see where each person’s favourite destination is and tell us about it ..

My favourite destination would have to be North Africa, Algeria, 1st because I am originally from there and its Amazing with Tunisia on the east and Morocco on the west ! you can’t ask for more, with its large coast across the Mediterranean and beautiful blue beaches and green ATLAS mountins across the NORTH, then in the south there is the GREAT Sahara Desert. France invaded Algeria for Nearly 200 years so you find the cities built with the French Architecture .. the seconde language in Algeria is also French and the same for the other North African countries.

  • Top 10 most religious states–ALL southern

    http://newsok.com/oklahoma-ranks-7th…rticle/3432877

Mississippi ranks as the most religious state in the nation in a recent Pew survey. Oklahoma was 7th, filling in the rest in no particular order are Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Tennessee, and South Carolina. All in the south. In Oklahoma, 69% of people said religion was very important to them and 50% of people attend weekly church services.

    edit: Here’s the full list:

    1 Mississippi
    2 Alabama
    3 Arkansas
    4 Louisiana
    5 Tennessee
    6 South Carolina
    7 Oklahoma
    8 North Carolina
    9 Georgia
    10 Kentucky

The whole south pretty much, except for Texas, Florida, and Virginia..the only ones missing from the Top Ten, and just barely.

I am surprised Utah, Indiana, Idaho, etc and a few others aren’t in the Top 10 to break up the southern bloc, but I guess not.

  • Strange diet ideas you should probably skip

Here at the Lab we hear about a lot of different weight loss schemes, from cookie diets to injecting pregnancy hormones. That one, strangely enough, didn’t make a recent list of stupidest diets put out by AlterNet, but it’s still a great quick list of the current not-so-greatest hits in the weight loss world.

    Cookies are not diet food

The first victim on the list is the cookie diet, which author Brad Reed says is problematic because of the low number of calories — about 800 — that a person is supposed to eat each day on the program. Such a low calorie consumption can lead to dizziness, weakened kidney function and heart palpitations.

And as someone who’s actually tried a couple of these diets, I can tell you that eating cookies all the time is not as fun as it sounds, and if you’re at all interested in healthy eating rather than just weight loss, you’ll be craving actual healthy food in no time.

    Fit shoes are a scam

Another big diet trend that far too many people buy into is the idea of special shoes that will help you burn more calories. These shoes are all over the place these days, and most experts call them both ugly and useless. The idea is that the contoured platform shape of the sole makes you burn more calories just by walking than you would otherwise, and that they help to tone the butt, hips and thighs.

But experts say don’t bet on it. Exercising in the shoes could easily result in injuries because they’re so unstable, and it’s unlikely any shoes would make your weight loss program more effective (unless they managed to actually get you walking more).

    Ab belts make a comeback

I actually didn’t know that ab belts, which were popular as a means of weight loss in the early 1900s, are making a comeback, but Reed names them as another stupid choice when it comes to weight loss products.

As in days of old, these devices use electricity to supposedly help tone muscles; the Federal Trade Commission isn’t happy with the claims many of the companies selling these devices make.

Drive-through diet on the road to ruin

This last one is a new one but you’ve probably heard about it if you watch any television: the Taco Bell Drive-Through Diet. Taco Bell is running new commercials with a woman claiming that she lost 50 pounds by replacing her regular, unhealthy drive-through food with Taco Bell food.

The commercial illustrates that the chain offers seven items containing fewer than 9 grams of fat, but notes in the fine print that these are not low-calorie foods. More fine print says she consumed 1,500 calories a day and that you could lose that much weight by cutting 500 calories a day — for two years. A visit to the diet’s website can get you a coupon for a Fresco Taco. This one really raises Reed’s ire.

Hold on, back up right there. If Christine honestly considers eating exclusively at Taco Bell to be a “sensible choice,” you have to wonder what other “sensible choices” she made to help her lose weight. Did she go to a witch doctor for monthly leeching seminars? Did she inject herself with flesh-eating bacteria to vaporize the extra calories? The mind reels.

We couldn’t have said it better ourselves.

  • My Interview with Jason Calacanis on TWiST #35

On Friday I spent two hours at Mahalo headquarters in Jason Calacanis’ studio filming This Week In Startups Episode #35.  Jason and I have known each other since the mid 1990’s – the last time he interviewed me was at Josh Harris’ Pseudo.com thingymabob as part of a roundtable with Fred Wilson, Jerry Colonna, and Matt Ocko (can’t find the audio on the web – I know it’s out there somewhere.)  No – I wasn’t naked during the interview, but I was a lot younger and thinner.  And I think there were some naked people wandering around.  If you know Pseudo, you know what I’m referring to.  If you don’t, then Steaming Video will give you a few hints.

Jason is coming to Boulder on February 2 and 3 for the first Open Angel Forum in Boulder (if you are an angel investor or an entrepreneur that wants to pitch, sign up on the info on the Boulder Open Angel Forum links.)  So – we talked some about Open Angel Forum, Startup Visa, TechStars, and a bunch of other things.  And then in hour two we did the standard weekly TWiST things.  Oh – and I got to meet Jason’s mom and dad!

  • Test to Help with Breast Cancer Decisions

The decision on whether to treat early-stage breast cancer with chemotherapy can be difficult for many women, but a 21-gene test is helping to make that decision easier for doctors and patients alike.

    decision-help

The multigene test called Oncotype DX is produced by Genomic Health Inc. It analyzes 21 genes taken from a tumor sample to see how active they are. A test result may range from 0 to 100. Since their cancer is considered less likely to recur, women who have low scores may decide not to use chemotherapy. Oncotype DX is intended for women with estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer that hasn’t spread to lymph nodes. Around 100,000 such cases are diagnosed every year. More than 120,000 breast cancer patients have used the Oncotype DX test since it became available in 2004.

The gene test is having a big impact on early breast cancer care. According to new research from Loyola University Health System, the test was the reason doctors changed their treatment recommendations in 31.5% of cases, and 27% of patients changed their treatment decisions because of test results. In cases where the test affected a treatment decision, the change by doctors and patients was to avoid chemotherapy. The study included 89 breast cancer patients treated by 17 medical oncologists at several different locations. The study results are published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

“This is the first study to show that results from this test simultaneously impact decisions by physicians as well as patients,” said oncologist Dr. Shelly Lo, an assistant professor in the Department of Medicine, Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine.

The Oncotype DX test costs $3,910, and often is covered by insurance. However, please check with your own insurance provider before being tested.

  • Samsung’s Billionaire Ex-CEO Lee Kun-Hee Checks Out Sony 3D TV

Lee Kun-Hee was a former chairman of Samsung Electronics until he resigned in Spring of 2008 due to involvement with a Samsung funds scandal (which he was later pardoned for). Here are some pictures of him at CES 2010 checking out Sony’s 3D TV experience, but of course he also checked out the other manufacturers booths extensively. Interestingly enough, CES 2010 was one of Lee Kun-hee’s first real public appearances since the whole embarrassing debacle in 2008. Lee Kun-Hee was quite outspoken at CES, stating that “Japan will not catch up to Samsung Electronics.” He also went on to say that “..he is not intimidated by other companies, such as Sony and Panasonic, to outpace them to the question of them gnashing their teeth waiting for the opportunity to rise above.”

Aside from being a CEO for many years for Samsung, he also happens to be one of the top South Korean billionaires with a net worth at more than 3 billion. Lee is married to Hong Ra-hee, currently one of the wealthiest women in Korea, who is also an executive director of the Hoam Foundation. His son is currently vice president of Samsung Electronics, his oldest daughter is a vice president of Samsung-affiliated Shilla Hotel, a luxury hotel and duty free store chain, and his second daughter is the vice president of Cheil Industries.

He also briefly gave a heads up on the third generation inheritance of Samsung Electronics; as reporters crowded around Mr. Lee, he gathered his two daughters and held their hands and said, “I should publicly show off my two daughters” adding more anticipation of Mr. Lee’s intention of the next company leader. When asked whether his two daughters are learning well, Mr. Lee responded saying, “They have lot more to learn and I still feel as though I am holding hands of two youngsters.”

He is the third son of the overall Samsung Group founder Byung-Chull Lee, who started the company in 1938. At the start, his business focused primarily on trade export, selling dried Korean fish, vegetables, and fruit to Manchuria and Beijing. In little more than a decade, Samsung – which means “three stars” in Korean – would have its own flour mills and confectionery machines, its own manufacturing and sales operations, and ultimately evolve to become the modern global corporation that still bears the same name today.

  • Help Haiti and Clean Out Your Closet at the Same Time

I’ve heard a couple of people say that they would love to give a donation to Haiti, but they just don’t have the funds. Some of them have wondered about donating clothing or other items. At first, I thought that was the perfect solution, but then I saw the news last night. The Haitian embassy is so overwhelmed with donations that they are piled up in mounds outside the gates and the embassy is trying its best to protect the donations from the elements. I saw a package of diapers that had tumbled off a pile sitting off to the side. So, I’m thinking that giving items to the Haitian people, well intentioned as it is, may not be quite the right solution. donating clothing to haiti

Instead, why not sell all the items you’ve collected from cleaning out your pantry or closets to send to Haiti? You can sell them through yard sales, thrift stores, or sites like eBay or Craigslist. Then, you can use the money you’ve earned to give a cash donation to a reputable charity that is dedicated to helping Haiti. The Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders and several other charities are working hard to get medical care, food, water and shelter to people.

Thinking that selling things to collect money will take time, while the clothing or food you donate will provide immediate help? It might not. With all the mail and other delivery services being disrupted and search and rescue people having trouble getting in, I’m not sure if the embassy will be able to ship in all the goods that are already stacked outside the gates in a timely fashion. And the truth is, as Sherry from Pitt Watch mentions, they’ll need your money next week, next month, or next year just as much as they need it now.

  • US broadband’s average speed: 3.9Mbps

In what has become a familiar refrain, the latest State of the Internet report from Akamai shows the US trailing in a number of metrics, including average connection speeds and broadband penetration.

As the FCC is set to announce the first official national broadband policy in March, the study underscores the need for that policy to encourage expansion of high-speed networking infrastructure (which it appears poised to do) as well as drive the necessary competition to make broadband connections more affordable (which it won’t apparently address in much detail).

Akamai bases its statistics on data gathered from its network of 56,000 servers spread around the world, part of its optimized media delivery system. This gives Akamai an extremely large data set to mine for information like the number of unique IP addresses accessing its services and their connection speeds. Sifting through this data and linking IP addresses to specific locations allows for some fairly detailed analysis.

  • Older drivers – Safe or unsafe?

Older drivers - Safe or unsafe?

The world’s population is aging rapidly, with implications in numerous areas, not the least of which is that the number of male drivers over the age of 70 will double in the next 20 years, and the number of female drivers over 70 will treble. Does this pose a greater risk on the roads? A new in-depth report released today by the UK’s IAM (Institute of Advanced Motorists contradicts the common assumption that older drivers are a danger on the roads, comprehensively proving that drivers over 70 are no more likely to cause crashes than any other driver, and are indeed, considerably safer than younger drivers…
