  • Costume National – Fall/Winter 2010 Show

    costume-national-main

Costume National keeps the tone dark for this year’s Fall/Winter collection. What the range lacks in layers, makes up for its intriguing detailed patterns and designs. There seems to be a lot of ribbing and other plays on fabric and texture in the looks, especially the outerwear and blazers. However, it’s the suits that standout with its own “anti-suit” look. The silhouettes are less restraining and more for casual and evening wear, than it is for workplace.

  • Justice Palace at Risk of Collapse

Justice Palace at Risk of Collapse
    Naharnet Newsdesk

Investigators called into the Justice Palace in Beirut have concluded that the building is at risk of collapse and simply renovating it will not be enough.
Due to a proposed plan by the Justice Ministry to add a 6th floor, specialized investigators have been called in to conduct a study. Their findings have concluded that the addition of a floor would almost certainly result in the complete collapse of the structure.

The building was built over what once was the Beirut river which justifies the explanation by an official source to As-Safir who said that a deviation of some 80 centimeters has occurred in the soil beneath the structure.

Multiple sources from within the Justice Ministry have claimed that the building is no longer even safe to park in and suggested the construction of a new building.

Propositions were made as to where the new building was to be located with some people suggesting the outdoor parking. Others preferred the purchase of a parcel of land which is close to the parking with some saying the use of a land in Abed Square – already owned by the government – is a third alternative.

In addition to the building being unsafe and outdated, it is also cramped with sometimes 3 judges sharing a single room as offices which, according to government and legal officials, are "no longer acceptable."

The proposed plan is to merge the Baabda and Beirut Justice palaces in one modernized compound as per international standards.

  • AT&T Inc. (T) Dividend Stock Analysis

This article originally appeared on The DIV-Net January 11, 2010.

Linked here is a detailed quantitative analysis of AT&T Inc. (T). Below are some highlights from the above linked analysis:

Company Description: AT&T Inc. (formerly SBC Communications) provides telephone and broadband service, and the company holds full ownership of AT&T Mobility (formerly Cingular Wireless).

Fair Value: I consider four calculations of fair value, see page 2 of the linked PDF for a detailed description:

    1. Avg. High Yield Price
    2. 20-Year DCF Price
    3. Avg. P/E Price
    4. Graham Number

T is trading at a discount to 1.) and 3.) above. Since T’s tangible book value is not meaningful, a Graham number can not be calculated. The stock is trading at a 28.1% premium to its calculated fair value of $21.16. T did not earn any Stars in this section.

Dividend Analytical Data: In this section there are three possible Stars and three key metrics, see page 2 of the linked PDF for a detailed description:

    1. Free Cash Flow Payout
    2. Debt To Total Capital
    3. Key Metrics
    4. Dividend Growth Rate
    5. Years of Div. Growth
    6. Rolling 4-yr Div. > 15%

T earned three Stars in this section for 1.), 2.) and 3.) above. A Star was earned since the Free Cash Flow payout ratio was less than 60% and there were no negative Free Cash Flows over the last 10 years. The stock earned a Star as a result of its most recent Debt to Total Capital being less than 45%. T earned a Star for having an acceptable score in at least two of the four Key Metrics measured. The company has paid a cash dividend to shareholders every year since 1984 and has increased its dividend payments for 26 consecutive years.

Dividend Income vs. MMA: Why would you assume the equity risk and invest in a dividend stock if you could earn a better return in a much less risky money market account (MMA)? This section compares the earning ability of this stock with a high yield MMA. Two items are considered in this section, see page 2 of the linked PDF for a detailed description:

    1. NPV MMA Diff.
    2. Years to > MMA

T earned a Star in this section for its NPV MMA Diff. of the $1,408. This amount is in excess of the $900 target I look for in a stock that has increased dividends as long as T has. The stock’s current yield of 6.05% exceeds the 3.72% estimated 20-year average MMA rate.

Other: T is a member of the S&P 500 and a member of the Broad Dividend Achievers™ Index.

Conclusion: T did not earn any Stars in the Fair Value section, earned three Stars in the Dividend Analytical Data section and earned one Star in the Dividend Income vs. MMA section for a total of four Stars. This quantitatively ranks T as a 4 Star-Buy.

Using my D4L-PreScreen.xls model, I determined the share price would need to increase to $31.80 before T’s NPV MMA Differential decreased to the $900 minimum that I look for in a stock with 26 years of consecutive dividend increases. At that price the stock would yield 5.16%.

Resetting the D4L-PreScreen.xls model and solving for the dividend growth rate needed to generate the target $900 NPV MMA Differential, the calculated rate is 0.8%. This dividend growth rate is less than the 2.5% used in this analysis, thus providing a margin of safety. T has a risk rating of 1.75 which classifies it as a medium risk stock.

The weak economy will have a minimal impact on T, but it will see revenue pressure as customers cut back spending, especially on older, highly profitable services, like long-distance voice. Customer migration to wireless is likely to occur faster than expected, thus, near-term margins will likely contract. Long-term, T’s scale, customer relationships, and network reach give it an advantage over most of its rivals. Its strong balance sheet and its power over suppliers should help the company generate cash and maintain its dividend. Though T is trading above my buy price of $21.16, it is one I will give strong consideration to initiate a position in in the coming weeks, based on its quality as my allocation and its dividend fundamentals allow. For additional information, including the stock’s dividend history, please refer to its data page.

Disclaimer: Material presented here is for informational purposes only. The above quantitative stock analysis, including the Star rating, is mechanically calculated and is based on historical information. The analysis assumes the stock will perform in the future as it has in the past. This is generally never true. Before buying or selling any stock you should do your own research and reach your own conclusion. See my Disclaimer for more information.

Full Disclosure: At the time of this writing, I held no position in T (0.0% of my Income Portfolio). See a list of all my income holdings here.

  • Unreleased Apple Newton Tablets Bic and Cadillac Dug Up [Apple]

More dusty Newton prototypes have emerged from the archives as everyone’s busy drycleaning their favorite black turtlenecks in preparation of Apple’s tablet announcement. The Bic and Cadillac hit the FCC but never quite made it to shelves, apparently.

The various photos were uploaded to Flickr by users Sonnyhung and Jimabeles, who says that he saw the prototypes at a “mobile computing development group” at Coke (no idea if he means Coca-Cola, or another company), saying that:

“Apple was more or less searching for a reason to build the tablet and never did find a market. I have no idea how many exist. I only know of one other and it is in a computer museum in California.”

Jimabeles claims the Bic had two PCMIA card slots, a retractable I/O door, removable battery, infrared, microphone and speaker, along with an ARM 610 20MHz processor. It never made it past the FCC doors, but as the tablet world is busy undergoing some major changes, it’s fascinating to look back at the models that Apple didn’t actually launch. • Chicken Alfredo with Sun-Dried Tomato Cream

I am not at all ashamed to admit that boxed meals with the word “Helper” in them appear on our dinner table once a month or so. This recipe that I found on BettyCrocker.com  uses a box of Chicken Helper Fettucine Alfredo with extra ingredients added to kick up the flavor. I think it sounds good!

Chicken Alfredo with Sun-Dried Tomato Cream

    Ingredients:

    1 tablespoon olive oil
4 boneless skinless chicken breasts (about 1 lb)
1 medium onion, chopped (1/2 cup)
1 box Chicken Helper® fettuccine Alfredo
    1 cup hot water
    1 cup half-and-half
    1/4 cup chopped dry-pack sun-dried tomatoes
1/4 cup chopped fresh basil leaves

    Directions:

    1. In 10-inch skillet, heat oil over medium-high heat. Add chicken and onion; cook 15 to 18 minutes, stirring onion frequently and turning chicken once, until onion is tender and juice of chicken is clear when center of thickest part is cut (170°F). Remove from heat; cover to keep warm.
    2. Meanwhile, fill 2-quart saucepan 2/3 full of water. Heat to boiling. Stir in contents of uncooked pasta pouch (from Chicken Helper box). Gently boil uncovered about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until pasta is tender; drain. Set aside.
    3. In same saucepan, mix hot water, half-and-half, tomatoes and contents of sauce mix pouch (from Chicken Helper box). Heat to boiling. Reduce heat; cover and simmer 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until sauce is slightly thickened.
    4. Cut chicken into slices. To serve, spoon cooked pasta onto serving plate. Arrange chicken slices and onion over pasta. Top with sauce mixture. Sprinkle with basil.

  • Marc Faber: A China Bust Is Coming

    marc faber, bloomberg 01/12/10

Here’s a topic that’s been getting much more attention than it was just a couple of months ago: the possibility of a bubble and a bust in China.

It’s especially been on people’s minds since the New York Times’s recent profile of short-seller Jim Chanos, the criticism he’s received from the likes of Jim Rogers and Thomas Friedman.

So, where does Marc Faber — one of the biggest doomsayer around — fall?

According to CommodityOnline, he kinds of has it both ways: Yes, there will be a bust, but it may not happen anytime soon:

“There is excessive credit in China, but the oversupply of money has been used to build the infrastructure, education, and R&D, rather than consumed. And that is the difference between China and US.”

“The China bubble will not burst soon. I don’t see it imminent.”

That’s kind of how he sees the US too — doomed eventually, but not doomed right away, and it’s why he usually isn’t “wrong.”
