  • RIM patent app will have you barely browsing the web at incredible speeds

Let’s not mince words: any way you slice it, RIM’s built-in browser for BlackBerry renders sites about as well as your $199 netbook renders Avatar. The good news is that we’ve got every reason to believe the company recognizes the problem and is working to solve it — but on a completely unrelated front, they’re trying to speed up the process of fetching raw data off the interwebs, too. In a patent app made public this month, RIM’s lab geeks describe setting up a proxy server right on the phone that would intercept the browser’s web requests and bundle, compress, and send them to a gateway on the other end (BIS, we presume) that would know how to deal with the packet. Likewise, compressed data would be sent back to the proxy, which would expand and deliver standard HTTP to the browser, just as it would normally expect. The proxy component would have other tricks up its sleeve, too, like automatically downloading and caching images in an HTML stream so that they’re ready when the browser wants them. In practice, really, it’ll make no difference to the end user whether all this magic is accomplished in a proxy or the browser itself — as long as we get some thoroughly-reworked rendering capability to go along with it, of course.

    [Thanks, Anand]

  • Dell Mini 5 teardown reveals Snapdragon guts and 3G SIM (video)

As long as Dell chooses to be stingy with the details of its upcoming 5-inch Mini 5 (codenamed Streak) MID we’ll just have to suss out the specs from more nefarious sources. And who better to fill in the blanks than the kids over at Tinhte — the original source of the leaked Android handheld that got official at CES? The Vietnamese site did the world a solid today by tearing into a Mini 5 sample revealing a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, two microSD slots, and a bigger 1,530mAh battery than the original 1,300mAh baby we saw back in October. The site also confirms the SIM slot with 3G radio and taste for faux 80s metal. See what we mean in the video (and bonus pic) after the break.

  • Beer Bottle Chandeliers Will Dress Up Any Frat House

If you live in a fraternity house you inevitably have an array of empty beer bottles strewn around the place from parties past. Now the folks at Barlite have finally come up with a use for all those empties – beer bottle chandeliers!

Yes, now you can buy a chandelier that holds your empty beer bottles. Change out the bottles and you have a whole new look. The frame is constructed of 11-gauge steel and solid steel rods.

The classic two tier pool top chandelier holds 52 beer bottles – just about the right amount for after a get together:

They also have a nifty beer bottle standing lamp:

If you don’t live in a frat, then you probably don’t have a valid excuse for buying these products. While these are fun in a kind of sophomoric way, a beer bottle chandelier does not exactly scream “sophistication” to the ladies.

  • Corporate Borrowing Costs Rise, Hit Highest Level Since November

Corporations have been issuing new debt at an epic pace, and it appears buyers are feeling a bit stuffed.

The spread between corporate and government borrowing costs is now 193 basis points, the highest level since the end of November, according to Bloomberg. Note that this is a fraught time for many governments, so government borrowing costs are already at elevated levels.

Interesting, this move is the opposite of what PIMCO has been calling for. The famous bond firm called for a shift into corporates at the beginning of the year, arguing that for reasons of relative supply, spreads would narrow. It’s early, but obviously that hasn’t happened.

  • Hair Loss Causes

    Introduction

Your hair loss causes may have started with a few extra hairs in the sink or in your comb. But now you can’t look in the mirror without seeing more of your scalp.

What is the normal cycle of hair growth and loss?

The normal cycle of hair growth lasts for 2 to 6 years. Each hair grows approximately 1 centimeter (less than half an inch) per month during this phase. About 90 percent of the hair on your scalp is growing at any one time. About 10 percent of the hair on your scalp, at any one time, is in a resting phase. After 2 to 3 months, the resting hair falls out and new hair starts to grow in its place.

    Signs and symptoms

The medical term for hair loss is alopecia. Pattern baldness(androgenetic alopecia), the most common type of alopecia, affects roughly one-third of men and women. It’s typically permanent. Other types of alopecia are temporary, including alopecia areata. It can involve hair loss on your scalp or other parts of your body.

    Treatment includes:

Oral treatments for hair loss must be taken continually to have a lasting effect. Finasteride is an oral solution for the hair loss following the male pattern baldness. Finasteride blocks DHT, the male hormone mentioned earlier that causes hair loss.

Topical solutions are popular for the treatment of hair loss. These involve applying a lotion or medication to the scalp as part of a routine. Minoxidil is a topical treatment for hair loss.

Best hair natural hair loss treatments:

Aloe Vera: Aloe Vera balances the pH of the scalp and heals from within. It is also helpful in cleansing the pores. Jojoba:If you are affected with hair problems like eczema, psoriasis, dandruff or seborrhea you are requested to use jojoba oil. Jojoba oil works well for hypoallergenic skin, as is a good moisturizer. This is one of the best hair loss treatment products. Henna is a traditional Indian herb, which is a good natural conditioner and works great as hair loss treatment product. It heals hair shaft by sealing the cuticle and repairing, stops breakage and restores the silky-shiny effect of your hair.

Nettles are rich in vitamins A and C, several key minerals and lipids that can be beneficial to the hair:

Nettle Root Extract has been used successfully in Europe as an inhibitor of 5-alpha reductase in treating BPH. As mentioned earlier, 5-alpha reductase is a key component in turning testosterone into DHT, the substance that causes the atrophy of hair follicles. Therefore there is great promise in its use as a component in natural hair loss treatments. Nettle Root Extract is available at health food stores over the counter, and has few side effects.

How to Naturally Prevent and Treat Hair Loss

Hair loss conditions are a common problem amongst many men and women. DHT (dihydrotestostrone) is the cause of thinning hair in men while women in can be hormone related. Provillus hair loss treatment will help reverse these effects with natural ingredients including vitamin B6, biotin, magne

Before we go any further with talking about the new collections from Milan, we’d like to take the time to thank the folks at GQ for their outstanding commitment to style by being able to present to us men’s fashion enthusiasts images from the shows. Whether its early 1900’s Sicily or Old 1940’s New York, you can see the influence exist in Dolce & Gabbana’s Fall/Winter 2010 Collection. • Baidu CTO Yinan Li Quits, Days After COO’s Departure

There’s something going on over at Baidu, the leading search engine provider in China. A mere ten days after the company’s chief operating officer Peng Ye bailed for ‘personal reasons’, Baidu this morning announced that chief technology officer Yinan Li is also calling it quits.

    For personal reasons.

Li was with the company only for 14 months, and his departure was announced in a two-sentence statement earlier this morning. The man’s biography page on the Baidu website still shows up when you do a search, but his picture and bio have been wiped off the site.

Prior to joining Baidu in October 2008, Li served as chief telecommunications scientist and VP at telecom solutions provider Huawei Technologies.

Li joined Huawei from Harbour Networks, a developer of intelligent security systems, where he served as chief executive officer. His work at Harbour Networks was preceded by various positions at Huawei Technologies, including product manager, director of research and development and president of research and development where he led a staff of over 5,000.

It’s unclear what is going on at Baidu, but two senior managers resigning in ten days is undeniably a sign of trouble. It’s hard not to see this move in relation to the whole Google / China ordeal, but we should note Baidu’s COO Peng Ye quit the company before Google posted its bombshell blog post about the ‘Operation Aurora’ cyberattacks and its decision to stop censoring search results on its Chinese portal.

In the wake of Google’s threat to exit China, Baidu is in an excellent position to capture even more share in a fast-growing market it already dominates.

Also worth pointing out: Baidu was recently hacked by the ‘Iranian cyber army’, the same group that had previously targeted Twitter. There’s no telling if this event has anything to do with the management changes, but we’ve asked the company for more information and will update if and when we hear back.
