“SUNDAY! SUNDAY!SUNDAY!” The intonation inextricably linked to weekend motorsports events and monster truck rallies is seared into our childhood memories, and last Sunday its originator, Jan C. Gabriel (1940 – 2010), passed away at the age of 69 after battling kidney disease.
Gabriel came up with the signature turn of phrase while auditioning to do the voiceover work for commercials advertising the U.S. 30 dragstrip in Indiana. A delay feature built into his tape recorder allowed Mr. Gabriel to pull off the unique repeat effect, and the rest, as they say, is history. He would go on to record fresh spots every week throughout the 1980s for events at U.S. 30 and other tracks around the country, bringing the “Sunday! Sunday! Sunday!” line national.
Mr. Gabriel also produced and hosted the motorsports-themed television show, “Super Chargers,” and his production company helped popularize monster trucks by pushing them into into the spotlight during the ’80s. Jan Gabriel is survived by his wife, Theresa, and daughter, Amanda. Follow the jump for video of one of the old U.S. 30 television featuring his famous tagline.

Fan-made render? Very possible, but we’re intrigued by the notion. The gang at Mobile01 have laid out two photos of what is being called the Motorola Shadow (not to be confused with the T-Mobile Shadow), which in a nutshell looks like Droid / Milestone with a white keyboard and wrist strap. Even more interesting is the assertion that this could be Google’s next flagship device, here lovingly dubbed the Nexus Two. Now while there is no way to corroborate at this point, we could totally buy this as feasible. After all, what better way to complement the Nexus One slate than with one with physical QWERTY? And who better than the company whose Android 2.0 device increased the platform’s mindshare at supersonic speeds, with a CEO willing to signify support even at the launch event for a competitor’s product? Color us curious — wrist strap-laden render after the break
The Open Angel Forum is coming to Colorado and having it’s first event in Boulder on 2/3/10. David Cohen – the CEO of TechStars – has written an extensive post titled Open Angel Forum – Colorado bound!which includes all the background leading up to this, along with information about:
Each event will only have 10-15 angels in attendance – all will be active investors. We’ll have five companies presenting. It will be an intimate event – if you want to get a feel for the chatter check out the twitter stream on Open Angel Forum take a look at Mark Suster’s post on the Inaugural Open Angel Forum.
I’m made angel investments in over 75 companies since 1994 and had a number of magnificent outcomes including NetGenesis (IPO), Critical Path (IPO), Harmonix (acquired by MTV), and Nutrisystems (IPO). Yeah – plenty of my angel investments haven’t gone anywhere, but in all cases I’ve had an awesome time working with entrepreneurs to create amazing new companies.
My relationship with David Cohen and TechStars has reinforced this for me as I’ve seen many of the young TechStars companies raise money from angels, go on to raise money from institutional VCs, or be acquired. I’ve also seen a renaissance in the super angel category with folks like Jeff Clavier at SoftTechVC, Chris Sacca, Dave McClure, the First Round Capital guys, Ron Conway, and David Cohen start to “institutionalize” this category.
One of my deeply held beliefs is a key part of the role of an angel investor is to help the entrepreneur – and operate in support of the entrepreneur. I’ve always despised the “pay to pitch”schemes that some angel groups have (where the entrepreneur has to pay to pitch) and wrote a post titled An Angel Investor Group Move That Makes Me Vomit. This started a bunch of noise around this issue which Jason Calacanis amplified – resulting in him creating the Open Angel Forum. I count myself as a proud supporter of this effort and co-collaborator in OAFCO with David Cohen.
Millions of people around the globe have to cope with hair loss. Hair loss treatments are becoming more important as people realize the effect of hair loss. We can also call hair loss balding, and the explanations for balding are countless.
Though hair loss runs in the family, the scientists claim that now it can be cured by gene manipulation. Men with genetic predisposition for balding may have sensitive areas in the scalp for male sex hormones. As age advances, these sensitive areas suffer from serious biological imbalance. The male hormone DHT is the culprit that ruins the hair. Slowly, over a lengthened period, the follicles shrivel and eventually the hair becomes thinner and shorter.
Hair-loss can be treated with natural cures and also through chemotherapy. There are three kinds of hair loss treatment available for the people afflicted by this condition.
The first and most accepted balding treatment is the natural based treatment. The main advantage of having this kind of treatment is that there is no side effect.
Other treatments may damage existing hair, making a half-bald person a fully bald person. The cosmetically based lotions, shampoos and herbal additions help plenty of people afflicted by hair loss. Several patients who used these treatments feel that by employing these products, the regrowing of hair is definitely influenced.
The second type of product widely used is the topical solution. Rogaine is one of the frequently used topical solutions for hair loss treatment. The main ingredient in this product is Minoxodil. This ingredient has the ability of growing hair, which is medically proven.
At times, the Minoxodil is combined with Retin A for better treatment. However, this combination cannot be bought in drugstores.
The third kind of hair loss treatment broadly used among the balding people is oral treatment. Propecia is being taken orally by folk suffering from hair-loss.
The main action of Propecia is to lower the chemical levels in the body, thereby obstructing the expansion of hair. In several studies it was discovered that Propecia has hair-regrowing effect.
Do you want to know the secret behind stopping hair loss? Are you wondering about the types of treatments that are available? You can find out the types of female hair loss treatments that are proven to be successful! Men can use these treatments too! It’s not often that I’ve come across a product that works perfectly, does exactly what it says it will, costs a lot less than its closest competitor and provides a real and salient difference in my computing experience. The US$44.97 BearExtender n3 does just that. Roland Saekow, a recent graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, realized that the ‘Airbears’ campus network wasn’t complete enough to allow students to connect from all parts of the large campus, so he developed an external Wi-Fi receiver that can boost the range of a standard Airport-equipped laptop by up to 200%. He partnered with Jason Opdyke of Rokland Technologies and brought his extender to market this past December.
I was interested in taking a look, since my home network (comprised of a Time Capsule and several Airport Express units) still leaves a section of my house where I can’t get a decent Wi-Fi signal, no matter what I try. I’ve been told that the only way to solve this is to run RJ-45 cable all around the outside of my house, and get a second router. Doing this would be ugly, inconvenient and expensive, so when I heard about the BearExtender n3, I had to find out if this would do the trick and vanquish my Wi-Fi-challenged rooms problem. Within ten minutes of opening the box I found that it did solve my issues, and in further testing I became even more impressed.
The box contains the BearExtender n3 along with two USB cables, one short and one long, and the software. The installer comes cleverly stored on a USB flash drive, so you MacBook Air users aren’t left out if you lack a DVD reader. You can place the BearExtender n3 on the side of your computer or attach it with a convenient clip to a laptop screen. It does have some heft to it, but clipping it to the back, as shown in the picture, doesn’t obscure any of the screen.
After plugging it into a USB port, installing the Railink driver software, rebooting and configuring a few settings, I tried it all around my house. In my highly insulated basement that needed four Airport Express units to get a signal from one side to the other, I was able to unplug two of them and connect just fine. Re-enabling the Airport card wouldn’t even show me a network. The BEn3 overrides the Airport card in your computer and increases your signal strength from the reported 20 dBw (which translates to 100 millwatts) in an Airport card to 700 millwatts. It also features a 2dBi gain antenna, which, though large, bypasses interference created by the Airport card living in an aluminum case.
The result is the best extender I have ever tried at the the best price ever. I’m sure there are others, but I found the closest competitor is the QuickertechQuicky which is rated at 500 millwatts and costs $US225. The BEn3 ups the ante by 200 millwatts and costs only $US44.97. The BEn3 is about five times cheaper while providing better range. Both units use the Railink chipset and require basically the same software.
The downside, and I really don’t consider this much of a downside, is that the BearExtender runs only on the 2.4GHz band; this doesn’t give you the option of a 5Ghz 802.11n network. This probably won’t be an issue for you if you’re in a relatively interference-free area as far as Wi-Fi channels go (2.4GHz requires more space between channels for uncluttered networking); if you have lots of neighbors crowding the spectrum, though, the lack of a 5 GHz option might cause some issues.
If you have an iPhone or iPod touch, it won’t work on a pure 5GHz 802.11n network since they both contain 802.11g radios. Additionally, Jason Opdyke told me in their testing they discovered that using a 5GHz network would have cut the range in half. The 2.4GHz band allows for backward compatibility with b and g devices as well as n, so regardless of what you have, you’re covered.
Even if your network is limping along just fine, the BEn3 will give you a better signal. In my testing I found that a device showing 57% signal strength using the Airport card became 100% using the BEn3. The further away devices are the lower the numbers get, but with some rare exceptions the BEn3 showed much higher signal strength than using the internal Airport card. The BEn3 also showed me more Airport Expresses, connecting to one or two more than were found by the Airport card.
Here’s another benefit I found. I really don’t understand why it happens (maybe some of you can enlighten me in the comments) but the Internet speed test found at Speedtest.net showed the BEn3 consistently coming up with quicker download and upload speeds; often by as much as a third. Another nice feature is that it can be used to extend your network with other nearby Wi-Fi users.
There are some other minor downsides though. The thing is pretty big and I can see it being a hassle connecting and disconnecting it each time you move your laptop. No big deal if you’re using a Mac Pro, Mac Mini or iMac. The software uses 32-bit drivers so it won’t work under Snow Leopard with the following computers:
Xserve (Early 2008)
Xserve (Early 2009)
Mac Pro (Early 2008)
Mac Pro (Early 2009)
It is compatible with Mac OSX 10.3, 10.4, 10.5 and 32 bit 10.6 Snow Leopard. 64-bit drivers are in the works.
I can see the BearExtender n3 solving a lot of Wi-Fi woes cheaply and well. The best recommendation I can give it is that, rather than send back the review unit, I bought it.
The UK Met Office is debating what to do with its long-term and seasonal forecasting after criticism for failing to predict extreme weather.
Some experts say the Met Office should stop longer-term forecasting because it damages the organisation’s reputation.
Others maintain that communication of the forecasts must be improved.
The Met Office has been criticised for failing to predict in its seasonal forecasts the UK would suffer this cold winter or the last three wet summers.
Lester Hartman, MD, is a Children’s-affiliated pediatrician who works at Westwood-Mansfield Pediatric Associates. For several years he has run a clinic in the mountains of Haiti through a program called the Haitian Organization Program For Education And Health. Hartman made his way to the region within days of this week’s earthquake. Below are three updates from Hartman as he has tries to make his way to the clinic and begins to grasp the level of devastation caused by the earthquake.
Friday, January 15, 5:53 pm – We are heading to the DR [Dominican Republic] Haiti border in a little bit and drive thru the night as is 6 hrs and then we will cross in am in a faltbed truck with $8000 US meds plus PLUMPY NUT- hi calorie peanut butter paste for malnourished kids. This may be my last contact until crossing the border back. Lots of Haitians trying to cross the border.
Friday, January 15, 2010 6:01 pm – We are in the mountains our clinic is intact. We will arrive at the clinic tomorrow with additional meds to help with the evacuees coming up the mountain. We are 5 miles west of Lascohabos in the Central Plateau region. This is Katrina X100. We expect to see more malnutrition.
Saturday, January 16 9:34 am – Got stuck in DR but found generous pharmacist who is getting us meds/ we got $6000 US food [and] about $6000 meds. It’s a drop in the bucket but at least it is a drop. This is going to be Katrina x 1000 and my childhood home was flooded in Katrina. Our director is planning to bring victims up from PAP [Port au Prince]. Who knows, we might have a tent city. Heading out to Haiti in about 1-2 hrs. Not sure what our access will be.
OpenCandy, the startup that tries to offer bundled applications that you might actually want to use, has added Joe Kraus, founder of Excite, JotSpot, and DigitalConsumer.org, to their board. Kraus is currently a Director of Product Management at Google.
Alongside the news, OpenCandy has also shared a pair of graphs showing their growth over the last year. They haven’t provided any absolute figures so we can only get a vague idea of how well they’re doing, but they’re clearing showing some hockey stick growth.
OpenCandy operates in territory that’s long been the domain of spam: bundled applications. Oftentimes when you download a piece of Windows software you’re prompted to install another application along with it (the most notorious of these are apps like WeatherBug and the Ask Toolbar). Most of the time, people don’t actually want this additional software they’re installing, but they inadvertently agree to install it anyway because their installer makes that the default choice.
Despite griping from users, developers continue to offered bundled apps with their software, because it provides them with an extra stream of revenue. When you install a bundled app, the developer of the original application gets a kickback.
OpenCandy is trying to make this process more transparent and intelligent. When you install an app that’s using OpenCandy, you’ll be asked if you want to install a bundled promotional app. But instead of making this the default action, installing the second application is opt-in, so you’re not going to do it accidentally. OpenCandy also looks to ensure that the applications it offers are high quality, without spam and spyware. It lets software developers “recommend software they love”, without losing the bundle revenue stream.
Of course plenty of people object to bundled apps in the first place, but this clearly a better solution than the misleading install flows.
