Citing law enforcement data that suggests murder rates have gone down while gun sales have increased, the Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) has sought to dispute the claims that guns cause violent crime, while the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA) has called on civil rights organizations to protect access to guns in the United States.
SAF says a newly released FBI report found that in the first six months of 2009, murders across the nation dropped by 10 percent. Moreover, its National Instant Criminal Background Check System shows that in January 2009 gun sales rose 28.8 percent over the same month in 2008, February’s sales were up 23.3 percent and in March they were up 29.9 percent over March 2008.
"This shows… that gun prohibitionists are wrong when they argue that more guns result in more crime," said SAF executive vice president Alan Gottlieb.
"Firearms in the hands of law-abiding citizens are no threat to anyone," and increasing sales may even have discouraged violent criminals, he suggested.
Meanwhile, CCRKBA reacted to the announcement from The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) which said it will monitor government response to recent police shootings in Washington State to make sure no proposals violate civil rights.
"We share the ACLU’s concern that the legislature’s reaction may be to clamp down on the rights of law-abiding citizens without accomplishing anything," stated CCRKBA chairman Alan Gottlieb, emphasizing that the right to keep and bear arms is constitutionally enshrined.

Nơi hội tụ của "siêu dự án"
Ở về phía Tây của Khu kinh tế, Tổ hợp nhà máy cán thép của Tập đoàn Vạn Lợi đang đi vào giai đoạn hoàn thiện cuối cùng để có thể cho ra sản phẩm vào đầu năm 2010. Trong khi đó, tiếp giáp với biển về phía Đông, cảng Vũng Áng 1 là sừng sững những con đập bê tông vững chãi, chia cách đất liền với vùng mặt nước xanh thẳm.
Tựa lưng vào núi, Khu kho ga, xăng dầu của Công ty Xăng dầu – Dầu khí Vũng Áng đã lên hình hài với những bồn chứa liên hoàn, đang bước vào hoàn thiện những hạng mục cuối cùng của khu điều hành, sẵn sàng phục vụ ga và khí ga cho Khu kinh tế, nước bạn Lào và các tỉnh Đông bắc Thái Lan.
Trong khi đó, ở một góc khác, Dự án Nhà máy nhiệt điện Vũng Áng 1 mới là khu đất bằng phẳng hút tầm mắt, đang được thi công phần nền móng.
Phó trưởng ban Ban quản lý Khu kinh tế Vũng Áng Thái Văn Hóa khoát tay một vòng nói: Thành lập hơn 3 năm nay, chúng tôi đã thu hút được 70 dự án đầu tư vào Khu kinh tế Vũng Áng, với tổng vốn đăng ký đạt 32,5 tỷ USD.
Ông Hóa cũng cho biết, ngoài Dự án khu liên hợp luyện cán thép và cảng Sơn Dương với mức đầu tư 7,9 tỷ USD, hiện nay, Tập đoàn Formosa (Đài Loan) đang tiếp tục nghiên cứu để đầu tư một khu lọc hóa dầu trị giá 12,4 tỷ USD, thuộc dự án lớn nhất cả nước, tính cho đến thời điểm này.
Tiếp nối Dự án nhiệt điện Vũng Áng 1 công suất 1.200 MW tổng mức đầu tư 1,2 tỷ USD đã được triển khai cách đây 2 năm, LILAMA và PACO đã có quyết định và được chấp thuận đầu tư tiếp nhà máy nhiệt điện Vũng Áng 2 để hình thành một Trung tâm nhiệt điện tổng công suất 4.800MW, trị giá 3 tỷ USD.
Thuộc hàng các dự án tỷ USD, tại Khu kinh tế Vũng Áng hiện còn có một số dự an đang trong giai đoạn hoàn chỉnh hồ sơ và chờ cấp giấy phép như dự án luyện thép của TATA (Ấn Độ) có công suất 4,5 triệu tấn/năm, trị giá giá 5 tỷ USD; hay dự án luyện cán thép của công ty cổ phần khai thác mỏ sắt Thạch Khê công suất 2 triệu tấn/năm, trị giá 2 tỷ USD
Ngay tại Hội nghị xúc tiến đầu tư ngày 19/9 tại Hà Tĩnh vừa qua, đã có vài dự án lớn tiếp tục được trao giấy chứng nhận đầu tư, tiêu biểu là dự án phát triển khu công nghiệp đa ngành quy mô 200ha và khu dịch vụ 20ha.
Cũng theo ông Hóa, Vũng Áng hiện có một khối lượng dự án khổng lồ đổ vào. Chỉ tính riêng sản lượng thép dự án của Formosa đã là 7,5 triệu tấn/năm, của TATA là 4 triệu, Thạch Khê 2 triệu, Vạn lợi 500 nghìn tấn. Và kèm theo các siêu dự án này, nhiều doanh nghiệp phụ trợ đã bắt đầu tăng tốc đầu tư vào Khu kinh tế.
Phía Tập đoàn Formosa, dự án đầu tư vào Hà Tĩnh vẫn nằm trong các ưu tiên phát triển ngay cả ở giai đoạn khó khăn về vốn. Việc chuyển tiền trả cho giá trị thuê đất vẫn được phía Formosa giải ngân theo đúng tiến độ. Lời hứa xây dựng 20 trường học cho các xã dự án lấy đất vẫn đang được triển khai, ông Hóa cho biết.
Đẩy mạnh xây dựng cơ sở hạ tầng
Hệ thống đập và ống dẫn nước đang được gấp rút xây dựng, hệ thống điện đã đáp ứng đủ theo yêu cầu của doanh nghiệp, nhưng với khu kinh tế này, hiện vẫn còn rất nhiều việc phải làm.
Tạo dựng cơ sở hạ tầng tái định cư cho 1.864 hộ dân thuộc diện di dời, để cho chỗ ở mới phải tốt hơn nơi cũ không phải là chuyện ngày một, ngày hai. Việc tái định cư gặp một số khó khăn do diện tích thu hồi lớn, lại đòi hỏi tiến độ nhanh, nên cần phải xây dựng cơ sở hạ tầng nhanh, ông Hóa cho biết.
Để làm được việc này, rất nhiều nguồn lực đang được huy động. Từ cuối năm 2008 đến nay, nguồn vốn hỗ trợ từ Trung ương cho giải phóng mặt bằng đã đạt khoảng 1.150 tỷ đồng. Ngoài ra còn có nguồn vốn chủ động từ ngân sách địa phương.
Song song với việc đẩy nhanh phát triển cơ sở hạ tầng Khu kinh tế, xây dựng khu tái định cư cho người dân phải di dời, xây dựng trụ sở xã, trạm xá, trường học Ban quản lý Khu kinh tế Vũng Áng còn tư vấn miễn phí thiết kế nhà, giới thiệu vật tư thích hợp cho người dân tái định cư.
Chúng tôi vận động các doanh nghiệp trên địa bàn tỉnh bán vật liệu xây dựng với giá bán buôn, tập trung hàng hóa, phương tiện vận chuyển ngay tại khu vực để hỗ trợ dân, Phó trưởng ban Ban quản lý Khu kinh tế Vũng Áng cho hay.
Khu xử lý rác 30ha cho Khu kinh tế đã được quy hoạch. Vấn đề xử lý nước thải cho toàn bộ Khu kinh tế cũng được trao cho đối tác phía Nhật Bản làm công tác tư vấn. When discussing “free” and its use as a promotional marketing tool, we often point to the fact that it’s hardly a new concept at all — and the idea of “buy one, get one free” or “free coupons” has been used successfully in the restaurant business for ages. Yet, it appears that some in the food business are going through the same debates that we find ourselves in around here concerning the use of “free” within a business model for the sake of promotion. I would imagine this has become an even bigger issue as many restaurants and restaurant chains experimented this year with big time “free” promotions.
A few weeks back, reader Josh sent in this analysis from someone in the pizza industry about why “free” makes a lot of sense as a piece of a larger marketing strategy. What struck me is how similar the discussion is to the discussions we have here. There are people who complain that giving away free food “devalues” the food. You have people complaining that the “cost” of free food is too high. But, in the end, the guy makes a good case for why free is a great system, for bringing in new customers, who can turn into loyal paying customers:
Many times I hear, “Giving away free food diminishes the value of my brand.” My response is usually laughter, followed by a question: “Are you kidding me?” The goal with free food is to drive qualified prospective customers into your establishment to try your food, service and experience.
Of course, the economics with food is quite a bit different than with content. With food, each “free sample” has a direct cost in that the same items cannot be sold. With content, the argument in favor of using “free” is even stronger, because you are just giving away copies — and each copy is free to make and distribute, even if the original copy cost money.

There’s a story about the gorilla award that we give out to the winners. It was inspired by the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey, where the gorilla’s first use technology/tools (bones) after discovering the monolith. The full story, and a picture of the actual award, is here.

Procter & Gamble Co. plans to launch an online store that will sell key brands, aiming to study consumer buying habits as it counters moves by traditional retailers, which have reduced the variety of brands they carry.
P&G spokeswoman Tressie Long said the company sees the new online store as more of a “learning lab,” where it can study consumers’ online buying habits, rather than as a direct source of sales growth. P&G, which already sells its products online through the Web sites of such retailers as Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (WMT), says it will share what it learns with retailers that carry its brands.
P&G’s new “eStore” will start as a pilot using 5,000 consumers in coming days. The site will carry only P&G products but will be owned and operated by PFSweb, an e-commerce service provider. Pricing on the site will be at the discretion of PFSweb, P&G says.
Not every P&G product will be available via the site initially, although big brands including Tide, Pampers and Olay will be sold there.

When Verizon Wireless (VZ) announced in February of 2008 that it would offer unlimited mobile phone calls for a flat rate of $99.99 a month, it took AT&T (T) a matter of hours to craft a similar rate plan and issue an press release touting it. No surprise then that Verizon’s announcement this morning of a $69.99-a-month nationwide voice plan and a $89.99-a-month voice and text plan, was quickly followed by AT&T’s announcement of similar offerings. Zacatecas Viernes 15 de enero de 2010 El director de Tránsito y Seguridad Pública de la entidad, Juan Antonio Caldera, informó que se mantiene un operativo vehicular constante en las carreteras estatales de los ocho municipios en los que esta mañana inició una nevada. En entrevista, Caldera Martínez indicó que permanecen en comunicación con los municipios de Zacatecas, Guadalupe, Calera, Fresnillo, Valparaíso, Monte Escobedo, Vetagrande, Morelos y Sombrerete, donde hay confirmación de la nevada. Manifestó que según las indicaciones de la gobernadora Amalia García Medina, se mantienen las medidas preventivas para evitar accidentes, por lo que se suspendió el servicio de transporte público en la zona conurbada Guadalupe-Zacatecas. Refirió que únicamente está activo el servicio de taxi, bajo las indicaciones de tomar precauciones extremas. En la capital se implementa un operativo, en el que se indica a los automovilistas disminuir la velocidad en la calzada Héroes de Chapultepec, Adolfo López Portillo, calzada Solidaridad y Paseo Díaz Ordaz, para evitar accidentes. Asimismo, se vigila el cerro de la Bufa, donde hay mayor afluencia de personas para tomarse fotos, disfrutar de la nieve y jugar con ella, dijo el director de Tránsito estatal. Aseguró que no hay ninguna carretera estatal cerrada, al indicar que se mantienen en constante comunicación con los municipios afectados por la nevada, así como con la Policía Federal. Agregó que las unidades de Protección Civil patrullan las zonas vulnerables para apoyar a la población que lo requiera, y en su caso, llevar a personas a los albergues habilitados para esta temporada invernal. |

Many see Capt Camara’s absence as the best hope for Guinea
Guinea’s wounded leader Capt Moussa Dadis Camara has agreed to let his deputy lead the country while he recovers from an assassination attempt.
In a statement, the military junta said Capt Camara, who is convalescing in Burkina Faso, would support the transition to civilian rule.
Earlier, interim leader Sekouba Konate had threatened to resign in a row with supporters of Capt Camara.
He had opened talks with the opposition while Capt Camara was in hospital.
The announcement follow talks with Burkina Faso’s president, who is mediating talks to resolve the country’s crisis.

When Capt Camara arrived in Burkina Faso, it was clear he was still very weak. His enfeebled condition may have persuaded loyalists calling for his return to Guinea that he was in no state to lead them.
The agreement that Capt Camara should remain out of Guinea will come as relief to the many observers who feared that his return might spark a conflict.
The fact that he will remain abroad does not however mean that all the stresses and divisions in Guinean society will go away. The army is not a unified body, though Gen Konate commands broad respect – and the heavy weaponry. The civilian opposition is also divided.
The veteran politician Jean-Marie Dore is the politicians’ choice for interim prime minister, Rabiatou Serah Diallo is the trade unionists’ candidate. Whoever is eventually chosen will not be uniformly supported.
The declaration said Capt Camara was "willingly taking a period of convalescence".
According to AFP news agency, the junta leaders have also agreed to form a unity government followed by polls in six months.
Capt Camara had been receiving treatment in Morocco following an assassination attempt by his former aide-de-camp on 3 December.
When he left hospital on Tuesday, he reportedly thought he was going to Conakry, only to find himself in Burkina Faso.
BBC West Africa correspondent Caspar Leighton says both the international community and the Guinean opposition see Capt Camara’s absence as the best hope for an orderly transition to civilian, democratic rule.
Earlier on Friday, Capt Camara’s staunchest supporters were pressing for him to return to Conakry.
But our correspondent said this seemed to push Gen Konate to threaten to resign and accuse Capt Camara’s allies of wanting to start a war in Guinea.

Capt Camara leaves hospital in Rabat and is flown to Burkina Faso
Unearthing truth of ‘bloodbath’
Capt Camara seized power in a coup in December 2008 after the death of long-time ruler Lansana Conte.
At first he promised a return to civilian rule, but soon dropped hints that he would stand for president himself.
That led to a pro-democracy rally on 28 September in the capital, Conakry, at which rights groups say more than 150 people were killed when the military opened fire.
A recent UN report on the stadium massacre said Capt Camara should face trial at the International Criminal Court over the brutal suppression.
Gen Konate has offered the post of prime minister to the opposition.
1. Does flying (cabin pressurization/altitude) effect the pump?
2. Will it set off the detectors (metal or new full body scanners)?

4. Are pump supplies okay to go threw carry-on bag scanners?
5. Ever since the crazy xmas bomber, are there any new restrictions that effect pumpers?

The Tata Nano has power windows for the driver and front passenger. Anyone sitting in the rear seats, though, will have to make do with manual controls. Of all the things we learned about the world’s cheapest car during its official North American unveiling in downtown Detroit yesterday, the way Tata Motors’ engineers split the difference between feature and basic functionality with its windows best exemplifies how this car got to be so inexpensive.
In person, the Nano doesn’t exude cheapness. It doesn’t look or feel expensive, to be sure, but there is a bit of heft to the doors and the Nano gives off a vibe that this it is, in fact, a real car – if a truly small and simple one. While the Nano on display at the Detroit Science Center was static, Tata did let us sit inside, and as it turns out, the interior is surprisingly roomy – bubble roofs do a lot to reduce claustrophobia. The Nano isn’t a car we’d want to go cross-country in, but to move four people around a city, it could work quite well. Especially at the absurd price – maybe – of around $5,000 once it can be manufactured to U.S. standards and tastes. Find out more after the jump.

:confused: I’m just asking if anyone knows how to upgrade the program software in my 715 paradigm? I’ve had the pump for a few years after upgrading from the 507/508. I was thinking that there must be a way to upgrade the pump program as in the GPS I have.
This is my first post and thread.
I probably also need a receiver like the carelink usb for reading the info from my pump. I put all the bg tests I take onto my pump and would like to run reports for my nutritionist.
Would anyone know how to get an older version of the carelink serial interface? I’m just a little crunched for money right now.

Predictions about phones overtaking PCs at one task or another are hardly anything new, but research firm Gartner has gotten a bit more specific than most with its latest forecast — which, among other things, foretells of a day when cellphones will be the most common device used for browsing the web. That momentous event will supposedly happen by 2013, when Gartner expects the number of browser-equipped phones to exceed 1.83 billion, compared to 1.78 billion old fashioned computers in use. According to Gartner, however, while browser-equipped phones will outnumber PCs by then, they won’t actually be most folks’ primary browsing device until sometime in 2015. In other prognostication news, the firm also says that fully three billion of the world’s population will be able to make electronic transactions via mobile or internet technology by 2014, and that by as soon as 2012, 20% of businesses will “own no IT assets” — meaning that employees would be using their own personal computer, and that the businesses themselves would be relying on cloud-based services.
