  • NY Times Finds An 8-Year-Old On TSA Flight Watch List

Back in 2007, the TSA wrote a “mythbuster” blog post on its site claiming that no 8-year-olds were on the TSA “no fly” list, which apparently was a challenge to the NY Times. While it didn’t actually find an 8-year-old on the “no fly” list, it did find one on the “watch list.” To be fair, the TSA in its blog post does acknowledge that there could be some 8-year-olds on the watch list, but none on the no fly list. And the Times did not find one on the no fly list — so the TSA’s blog post is technically accurate.

That said, the TSA blog post also claims that if there are mistakes that lead to an 8-year-old being on the watch list, airlines can “automatically deselect” them. And… that did not appear to happen. The kid that the NYT found apparently gets vigorously searched every time he flies. The Times did get the TSA to say on record that “there are no children on the no-fly or selectee lists,” but the fact that little Mikey Hicks gets searched so much highlights the problem. Right now, it seems like everything is based on a name alone. That’s not particularly sophisticated. By this point, shouldn’t the TSA have better tools than just a name to determine if someone is worth additional scrutiny?

  • Seesmic gives key upgrades to Blackberry application users

seesmic-logoPopular social networking dashboard Seesmic has been busy lately. With the recent purchase of Ping.fm extending its updating capabilities, Seesmic today announced several key Twitter upgrades to its Blackberry application.

Recently making upgrades to its mobile Android version, Seesmic is now adding Blackberry features to make Twitter users’ experience easier, according to its blog.  Features include lists, retweets, searches, picture preview, geo-location through Google Maps, a connection with BlackBerry’s BIS-B Internet work, and the ability to delete tweets.

While most of these features can be found across most Twitter applications, several have the potential to make Seesmic on Blackberry a popular app. Aside from the practical retweet function, users will now be able choose a quote feature which includes the quoted user automatically at the end of the tweet. A picture preview feature allows the user to preview any pictures from image services both in the timeline and actual tweets. Leveraging Google Maps and Twitter’s geo-location feature, tweets will have customized maps to reflect the Tweeters location. Lastly, users using any connection, even the BIS-B connection, will be able to use the app.

Seesmic is quickly becoming a go to desktop and mobile all in one social network dashboard. It will be interesting to see what the rest of 2010 holds for the company.

  • Google lowers Nexus One upgrade price to $279, issues $100 refund to early upgraders

Good news, earthlings! Apparently Google’s taken all the complaints about Nexus One upgrade pricing to heart, because it’s giving $100 rebates to current T-Mobile subscribers who paid $379 for the HTC-built handset — and it says it’ll be widening the net and offering upgrades to even more current T-Mo subs, although we still don’t know how that’s determined. That means the new Nexus One pricing tiers break down like this: $529 unlocked, $279 upgrade for (some) current T-Mo subs, and $179 on a new 2-year contract. Handshakes all around. Now, let’s fix up family plan activations and that crazy double ETF, shall we?

  • DigitalRise X9 tablet has Atom, multitouch, $780 price tag

This one doesn’t seem to have quite made it to CES, but DigitalRise’s new X9 tablet is now available to order, and it packs just enough familiar features to fit right in with the pack. That includes a 10.2-inch multitouch display, an Atom N270 processor, 2GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, a 1.3-megapixel webcam, built-in 3G, GPS and WiFi, and Windows 7 for an operating system. Of course, availability is apparently limited to import shops at the moment, and this one doesn’t exactly come cheap, with it running a hefty $780 — although that is a $220 discount off its $1,000 list price.

  • Nexus One sells only 20,000 phones its first week

Another “iPhone killer” has failed to deliver on its hype. According to mobile analytics firm Flurry, Google’s Nexus One phone sold a mere 20,000 units in its first week in the market.

The Flurry report goes on to compare the Nexus One launch with other smartphones, including the Motorola Droid, which sold 250,000 units in its first week. In its comparison to the iPhone 3GS launch, however, the report is a bit disingenuous. The iPhone 3GS was an update to an existing & wildly popular product, not a completely new product launch. In that light, the 1.6 million iPhones sold in the first week of the 3GS launch, while indeed 80 times the number of Nexus One sales, aren’t a true apples-to-Apple comparison.

Instead, a better comparison may be to sales of the original iPhone. According to Apple’s Q3 2007 results, released on 25 July 2007, the iPhone sold 270,000 units during the quarter. The original iPhone was released nearly a month earlier, on June 29. That works out to around 10,000 original iPhones sold per day following its 2007 release, which dovetails nicely with an early 2008 analysis of iPhone sales from Ars Technica. Far from the flabbergasting sales lead of the 3GS, the original iPhone sold about 3.5 times as many units in its 2007 launch as Nexus One did in 2010; also, the original iPhone sold for a hefty $599, even with an AT&T contract, while the Nexus One is $179 with a new T-Mobile contract ($529 without).

If anything, these numbers highlight the popularity of the Droid compared to the Nexus One. Droid sold nearly as many phones in its first week as the original iPhone sold in its first month, which is nothing to sneer at. By comparison to the Droid, however, the Nexus One launched with a whimper, not a bang.

Flurry notes, correctly, that the Nexus One launch has suffered low numbers in part because of Google’s “soft launch” of the phone. Both Droid and the iPhone had aggressive marketing campaigns leading up to their respective launches, while the Nexus One has had to rely largely on industry hype and Google’s own advertising. Nexus One also launched directly after the holiday season, which seems like a boneheaded move; a launch even three weeks earlier could have gained them much more robust sales. Google is also sort of “going its own” compared to Apple and AT&T’s partnership with the iPhone and Verizon’s vigorous hyping of Droid.

All these factors aside, both the low sales numbers and criticism of both the handset itself and Google’s abysmal customer support boil down to one thing: while it may be a good phone on its own merits (or not), the Nexus One is no iPhone killer.

  • How accurate are A1C test and what do they

determine? First 3 months after I was first D’xd I was just learning about diabetes (through this Forum mostly) and incorporating moderate exercise – and some form of low carbing.

My 1st A1C results came back as 5.6%. I was happy with that and so thought to better this percentage I went all out with the exercise the following three months except for about 3 weeks between the Xmas and after the New years – where I did’nt exercise at all and probably ate too much of the "bad" stuff like chocolates etc. Had my second A1C in Jan ’10 which came in at 5.9%

What I want to know is : what do I change to better this number? reduce the exercise and not go so extreme like the first 3 months after d’xd? since d’xd I have dropped my weight my 10kgs and body fat content by 7%. I would have thought this would have accounted for a much better A1c result.

My meter readings have always been pretty good – no extreme highs or lows and fasting level have usually hoovered around the 5.00 to 5.3 mark (except for this morning where I ate late and meal was carb loaded)!

Any advice would be most appreciated.

    Thanks all.
    Donna.

  • Intel earnings surprise: we have lift-off

Depending on how you look at it, Intel either turned in a monster of an earnings report for the fourth quarter of 2009, or they’ve finally pulled back up to 2007 levels—the former view gives you a whopping 875 percent jump in year-over-year net income, while the latter gives you essentially three “lost years,” in which the company’s revenues topped out (2007), then tanked (2008), then ramped right back up (2009). Either way, Intel has posted a “V-shaped recovery” that is gunning its stock up in after-hours trading.

The basic numbers are in the chart below, but you can get the whole story by looking at only two of the: top-line revenue, which is back up to bubblicious 2007 levels, and gross margin, which is a record 65 percent. What this means is that a combination of aggressive cost cutting and a fresh round of IT and consumer spending has gotten Intel back to where it was before the financial crisis of late 2008.

    GAAP Financial Comparison

    Quarterly Results

    Q4 2009

    vs. Q3 2009

    vs. Q4 2008

    Revenue
    $10.6 billion up 13% up 28%

    Operating Income
    $2.5 billion down 3% up 62%

    Net Income
    $2.3 billion up 23% up 875%

    Earnings Per Share
40 cents up 7 cents up 36 cents

To see just what a roller coaster ride it has been, take a look at the chart below, which shows the GAAP revenue and net income numbers for Intel over the past three years:

Intel Revenue and Net Income, 2007-2009

Note that if you turned those revenue numbers into a line graph and added a bunch of noise, you’d have a slightly flattened chart of the S&P 500 over that same period. In other words, as goes the economy, so goes Intel, at least in recent times.

Digging into the numbers, the PC Client Group, Data Center Group, and Other Intel Architecture Group all saw double-digit revenue gains, with the Atom group posting a 6 percent jump. The company saw the value of its equity investments jump by $96 million, and its effective tax rate drop to 12 percent.

Broken down geographically, revenue was up across all regions.

  • Heidi Montag’s New Breast Implants

With a new nose and chin and implants that would put a pornstar to shame, Superficial star Heidi Montag-Pratt goes public with her alleged addiction to cosmetic surgery in the Jan. 25 issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands this week. But the nearly-unrecognizable Hills starlet has found herself defending her right to turn her body into a Tupperware collection: “It sounds crazy, but once you get a certain size boob, you always want bigger. Bigger is better,” the 23-year-old said in a video clip posted on PEOPLE.com this afternoon. “The first time I got them, I thought they’d be bigger, so now that I’ve had them in me… and I know what I really want in size… I know I’m going to be very excited….“

Despite her glee at potentially becoming the next Joan Rivers, the newlywed is feeling the wrath of critics, like actress Emmy Rossum, who accuse the blonde of glorifying cosmetic surgery: “People are going to say nasty and judging things regardless of what I do,” Heidi explains. “Obviously… this is very serious and a very controversial thing even in today’s society, but the most important thing is for me to feel good and for me to be happy and confident in my body. I’m the one living in my skin.”

  • New Civic 2010 ganha nova versão

    New Civic LXL

  • Who killed Instant Messaging?

I know the smell of a dying solution, and IM‘s got it bad. It’s not dead yet, but it’s got seven tentacles in the grave.
I came late to IM, so I’ve only now realized why the party is so quiet. I started with Beejive on my iPhone as an SMS alternative. It worked fairly well, though I ran into server disconnect and message delay problems. Then I started using it with Google Talk at work. There I ran into issues with messages going to one client or the other but not always both.
It wasn’t until I started looking at multi-account desktop XP clients, however, that I realized how bad things were. That’s where I found cr*pware bearing unwanted toolbars, neglected and buggy open source solutions, walled gardens from AOL and Microsoft, and web apps that want my google credentials (good luck with that).
    Yee-uch. I know that smell!
So if IM is dead or dying, who held the knife?
I’m guessing it was a combination of Twitter, SMS/texting bundles, the mobile migration, the unflinching stupidity of Yahoo/AOL/Microsoft/Skype (basically everyone but Google), the non-multitasking iPhone and, above all, the complete absence of any plausible revenue stream [1].
[1] So why are there pretty-good IM clients on the iPhone? Hint.

  • ASUS EeeTop ET2010PNT hints that NVIDIA Ion 2 is GeForce G310

We were a little disheartened last week when we didn’t hear a peep out of NVIDIA about Ion 2, but Pierre of Blogee has dug up some dirt on the next-generation graphics. The ASUS Eee PC ET2010PNT’s got a pretty nice looking 20-inch HD multitouch display, but it’s also powered by the new Intel Pine Trail D510 processor and NVIDIA GeForce G310 graphics — which according to the document is being dubbed as Ion 2. Sure, we already knew that the next version of Ion would be compatible with Intel new Atom platform, but we didn’t know that they’d be tossing aside the GeForce 9400M for its G310 graphics card (which is apparently just a rebranded G210). As we thought, it looks like this will be a discrete solution, and it appears (if the benchmarks are accurate) that the G310 will be considerably faster than the current Ion platform. We’re just hoping the 589MHz 16-core CUDA chip has been tweaked for better power efficiency when it comes to cramming it into netbooks. No word on when the ET2010PNT will be available, but given the initial hold up we saw with Ion 1 we aren’t overly optimistic that it will be any time soon.
