    Destaques do evento

  • Video: Marchionne talks about Chrysler’s restructuring and U.S. loan payback

During his attendance at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show, Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne said that the government should expect its investment in the automaker back; however he did not give a schedule as to when the company plans on returning the loan.

While browsing through our RSS reader, I came across this short 4 minute Sergio Marchionne interview by CNNMoney. It’s an interesting video where Marchionne discusses Chrysler’s restructuring process and its future as an American automaker.

Check out the video after the jump.

  • Rocco DiSpirito’s Marinara Sauce Recipe

Another yummy-sounding sauce recipe from the Good Morning America website:

    Rocco DiSpirito’s Marinara Sauce:

    Ingredients
    # 1/2 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
    # 6 garlic cloves, minced
    # 1 large yellow onion, cut into small dice
    # Salt
    # Crushed red pepper
    # Two 28-ounce cans tomato puree
    # 1/2 cup water
    # 1 small piece Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese rind
    # 1 large sprig fresh basil
    #
    Cooking Directions

Heat a Dutch oven over medium heat. When the pot is hot, add the olive oil. Add the garlic and onion, and season them with salt and crushed red pepper to taste. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onion and garlic are translucent, about 4 minutes.

Add the tomato puree, water, and Parmigiano-Reggiano rind to the pot. Bring to a simmer. Then cover, reduce the heat to low, and simmer for about 25 minutes.

With the back of a knife, bruise the basil and stir the sprig into the sauce. Simmer the sauce, uncovered, for 5 minutes. Season with salt and crushed red pepper to taste, if desired. Serve, or store in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

  • TUAW Review and Giveaway: Twelve South BassJump subwoofer for MacBook

It’s no secret that I am an unabashed fanboy of Mac accessory design firm Twelve South. Their BackPack for the iMac and Apple Cinema Display is sleek and utilitarian, and the BookArc is a stylish way to stash that MacBook Pro when you want to use it with the cover closed. So it was with a great deal of interest that I read about another of the company’s accessories, the BassJump portable subwoofer for MacBook.

The idea behind the US$79.99 BassJump is simple — the built-in speakers on the current MacBooks do a poor job of replicating the low-end of the sound spectrum, so why not add a USB-powered subwoofer to the mix to make the MacBook sound better?

The BassJump portable subwoofer kind of reminds me of a shrunken Mac mini. Five inches on a side and a tiny bit over two inches tall, the speaker has a rubberized base to avoid sympathetic vibrations that could ruin sound quality. There’s no power supply — as noted earlier, this is a USB-powered accessory.

You’re not going to be able to use the BassJump as a replacement for a high-end audio system. The existing speakers in the MacBook line do an “OK” job of replicating the higher frequencies and the BassJump can fill in on the lower frequencies, but the combo still doesn’t beat a dedicated audio system. But if you have a need to pump good-quality sound out of a MacBook for a presentation, or just don’t want to be tied to a set of earbuds or headphones when listening to your iTunes library, the BassJump is a great solution. It’s no secret that I am an unabashed fanboy of Mac accessory design firm Twelve South. • Jordan to Censor Websites

The Jordanian government has ruled that electronic communication like websites will be subject to the country’s Press and Publications Law, prohibiting speech that insults religion, according to reports from the region.

Jordanian blogger Gaith Saqer covered the news in English this afternoon on his blog Arab Crunch.

Critics of the ruling worry that the law will be widely applied to social media, possibly even SMS and to websites that allow reader comments to be posted. Supporters appear to argue that free speech comes with responsibilities along these lines and that the legal framework actually facilitates online communication.

  • December NPDs: Nintendo Sells 7M in Combined Hardware

Nintendo is back to printing money, with a blockbuster December that might make you forget about the recession. At 3.8 million, the Wii set a new industry record, both for hardware units sold and revenue generated in a month. The DS came in close to the Wii’s numbers, making it the second-place holder for that same record. Combined, Nintendo alone sold over a staggering 7 million units of hardware in December alone. The other consoles saw a notable bump as well, and the PlayStation 3 had its best month on record, clearing a million units for the first time.

Sony issued a statement noting that PS3 sales have been nearly doubling every month since October, and December’s increase is 87% year-over-year. Microsoft called 2009 a “breakthrough year” and pointed out that the console sold over 10 million units over the course of it. Nintendo noted their shattered records and, we presume, went back to having money fights in the break room.

    December 2009 Hardware Sales

    • Wii — 3,810,000
    • Nintendo DS — 3,310,000
    • PlayStation 3 — 1,360,000
    • Xbox 360 — 1,310,000
    • PlayStation Portable — 654,700
    • PlayStation 2 — 333,200

  • Donations To Haiti Via Text Message Surge Past $5 Million

Screen shot 2010-01-14 at 5.41.53 PMOne of the reasons text messaging is so popular is because it’s so simple. Anyone with just about any kind of mobile device can do it. And that’s why it was ingenious when the Obama administration set up a special number and got the major U.S. carriers on board to allow people to very easily donate $10 to the Red Cross to help with the disastrous situation in Haiti following a major earthquake. So far, that program has raised over $5 million from over a half million different mobile phone users, someone from the U.S. State Department confirmed today.

As of the last update, the number stands at $5.2 million. Of that, more than half have apparently come from AT&T users ($2.63 million), the company told us today. If you’re still interested, simply text HAITI to the number 90999. A $10 charge will be attached to your next cellphone bill.

AT&T shared their data today after I reached out over some confusion about whether the company was actually profiting from this fundraiser. Yesterday, in a hurry to get the program going, the service was still charging users for sending this text messages, apparently. But when they realized that, they made them all free, and went back and retroactively removed any charges users may have gotten by texting for the cause. Nice move.

This texting drive, being run through mGive, a non-profit working with the Red Cross, is also leveraging Twitter and Facebook to help get the word out there. Donations are said to be coming in to the tune of $200,000 each hour, so they’re very likely coming close to $6 million raised at this point. Impressive stuff.

  • Nova Iorque em 2009 e 2010!

    Continuando…

Agora Nova Iorque.

  • T1 Forum Newbie

I am new to any type of diabetes forum, so here it goes: I am a mother of a 13 yr old son who’s had T1 since he was 5 yrs old. For the past 8 yrs, my son has been on NPH/Humolog where he just had 2 diluted injections before morning and evening meals. Just visited with endo who is an advocate for the pump. Downside is, my son went in to dk 2 yrs ago less than 1 month from using the pump. We immediately took him off of it. My son, who is very active and an athlete does not want to use it again. The only compromise I could come up with was, "lets explore our options b4 we go back to the pump!" He’s agreed. As he’s gotten older – or perhaps going to the puberty stages and still growing his A1c (today) was 8.6. Our goal is to be in the 6 – 7 range. This endo has encouraged his range at 80-180? We are looking into the pen. I wanted the lantus and Humolog and was given Levimir and humolog instead. His orginal dosage of NPH/Humolog is AM: 8-9-10units Humolog with 30units of NPH and for PM: 8-9-10units Humolog with 20units of NPH. Today, she "shot a number from the sky" of 24 units of Levimir to be taken only at bedtime with a sliding scale of humolog before meals during the day. Does this make sense? She firmly told me that levimir and lantus are same thing? I was stunned and shocked when she pulled out the manual to instruct me how to put a needle on the pen. Correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t lantus last 24 hrs as opposed to Levimir about 14 hrs? I’ve asked for a Family Practicioner since pedi endos are scarce in our area. Most Endos will only see patients that are at least over 15 – 18 yrs of age. I’m at wits end. Any advice and/or suggestions? Also, does 24 units one time a day (given at bedtime) seem right? I’ll see FP on Monday. I’ll keep u posted.

2010_01_15-TJSugar.jpgWe do quite a bit of our shopping at Trader Joe’s. It’s nearby, relatively inexpensive, and well-stocked with many of the fun foods we enjoy (hello prosciutto!). We buy most of our grains and produce items at a local co-op or the farmers market, and a lot of our other food comes from TJ’s. We’ve always been annoyed, though, at the baking section.

  • A Few Thoughts and An Invitation To Susan Bysiewicz

    by Ryan McKeen

Prior to hitting “post”, I thought my post on Susan Bysiewicz would generate some buzz. It did. I’ve been taken aback by how much buzz it generated and how fast it generated it. It’s not easy being engaged in the “active practice of law” and responding to the media.  This blog is my hobby. I don’t make any money from it. I enjoy doing it but I am a lawyer first and a blogger second. My priorities are clear.  Addressing the needs of my clients in my ever growing practice comes before all else. Writing motions and responding to clients are more important to me than appearing on the local news.

    A few thoughts:

    1. I’m extending an open invitation to Susan Bysiewicz to post a response on this blog. This much is owed to her. I’ll give her all of the space she wants. I’ll keep her post up for a week and I won’t edit it. I’ll give her this forum to make her case. She is welcome to post whatever she wants on this site whenever she wants to post it.

    2. I don’t know what it means to be engaged in “the active practice of law”. The practice of law means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. My day looks nothing like the day of an in-house counsel to an insurance company. My day is also vastly different than the day of an attorney who doesn’t spend anytime in court.  I’m no more of an expert on this subject than I was before I wrote the post.

    3. My post was not a personal attack on Susan Bysiewicz though she’s probably none too  happy with me.  If I were her, I wouldn’t be happy with me and  that’s fine. This is a democracy and it’s important for lawyers to ask questions of those seeking elected office. I didn’t write the law but it exists. It’s fair to examine the credentials of a person who is seeking to become the top lawyer in the State. If nothing else the discussion is healthy.

    4. The genesis of the post was this post. A pretty standard post for this site. After posting, I got a message from Gideon at A Public Defender asking if all of the candidates were qualified. I didn’t know. Since I’m not a fan of American Idol, I spent last night trying to answer Gideon’s question. I stumbled on Susan Bysiewicz’s biography on the Secretary of State’s website and that prompted the post. That’s it.

    5. Who is Gideon? Since I’m not telling you who he is, I’ll tell you who he’s not. He’s not a candidate for Attorney General. He is an attorney engaged in the active practice of law. Gideon is a long time friend of this blog. He runs A Public Defender which is one of the better legal blogs that you’ll find on the net. I’ve met him in person and I swear to you that he’s not George Jepsen or that legislator from the shore who I’ve never heard of and don’t care to google.  As bloggers, we commonly ask each other questions about each other’s posts. This was no different.

    6. It is offensive to suggest that someone planted something on this blog. This site is above board. What you see is what you get. These thoughts are mine.

    7. It will be interesting to see if the legislature defines “active practice at the bar of this state” this session.
