  • Dysthymic Disorder (Dysthymia)

Dysthymia is simply chronic depression which lasts for years. It does not have to be as severe as the major depression; however people who suffer from dysthymia do not even remember a day that they did not felt depressed. The symptoms are similar to depression, overeating or poor appetite, low energy, sleeping disorders, low self esteem and difficulties in concentration and making decisions.

In order to be diagnosed with dysthymic disorder, no major depressive disorder has been diagnosed and the duration in children and adolescents must be at least a year, for adults this is more than two years. This means that the person needs to have a long termed, mild and not complicated depression to be diagnosed with dysthymia.

In adults, dysthymia has a big risk to turn into major depressive disorder. In children, there is a risk of having hyperactivity disorder, learning disorders and mental retardation. Adolescents have bad school performance low self esteem and poor social interaction.

  • FreeAllMusic Signs Up Universal Music For Ad-Supported Downloads

Universal Music Group is partnering with new ad-sponsored digital music download service FreeAllMusic.com to let anyone download music from the record label’s artists, which include Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Taylor Swift and Jay Sean.

Via Free All Music’s platform, thousands of tracks will be offered at a rate of 20 free downloads per month, five per week, starting every Tuesday. The recently launched FreeAllMusic.com, which appears to be in private beta, lets users access downloadable, high-quality, iPod-compatible MP3s of advertiser-paid, free, legal, and unrestricted song. The catch: users watch a video commercial per download on the site, Users’ music selections and sponsoring brands are then promoted externally through an opt-in, digital advertising network.

To download a free track, users can select a participating brand and then need to watch a video advertisement from that brand. Brands who are participating in the initial launch are Coca-Cola, Warner Bros, Zappos, Lionsgate, LG, and others.

Universal Music has long been a little trigger-happy on the lawsuits against music and video sharing services (MySpace, Veoh and its investors, Grouper / Bolt.com, etc.), so its interesting that the startup has been able to bring on the record label. With the ad-supported downloads, FreeAllMusic may have found a way around the music label’s onerous fees. At the moment, it doesn’t appear that FreeAllMusic has other record labels signed; and its unclear if the site will add music from other record labels. Obviously, more varied music options will equate to more followers.

  • Viacom’s EPIX Finds Second Cable Distributor In Cox Communications

Epix, the movie and entertainment streaming network that works across your TV, computer, and mobile phone, has officially landed a second cable provider for its service: Cox Communications. We wrote about the service here and here. Cox was rumored to be in negotiations with EPIX in December.

Jointly backed by Viacom, Lionsgate, and MGM, EPIX provides access to over 15,000 movie titles. The company originally signed a deal with Verizon FIOS, which was somewhat limiting considering only some 2 million people use Verizon’s cable service. Cox brings more clients to EPIX with its base of 6.2 million customers, which including 2.7 million digital cable subscribers. EPIX will brings its programming to Cox customers starting in April 2010. Specific terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

One of our main issues with EPIX was that it was tied to Verizon FIOS but it appears that the company is steadily adding more cable providers to distribute its service. Epix was also said to be close to an agreement with the Dish Network, which would bring a large list of 14 million subscribers. Unfortunately, the platform offers a sliver of available movies out there, since it only includes only the movies available through the studios that are backing the company. But EPIX is useful because it transcends over the TV and your computer and its fairly easy to use.

  • Will Temporary Census Jobs “Jumpstart” An Employment Rebound?

Friday, I reported that the U.S. employment situation is murky at best, with 85,000 more jobs lost in December and jobless Americans becoming more discouraged. But many of those having trouble finding a job could be in for a stroke of good luck: it’s a census year. That means over a million temporary workers will be hired in the first half of this year to count Americans. A recent article from Bloomberg argues that this hiring could jumpstart an employment rebound. I doubt it.

First, this work may, indeed, serve as a sort of “bridge” for those who get the census jobs. Perhaps after being employed in that capacity for some months, the economy will have improved. That way, we’ll have fewer people on unemployment during that time, and when they hit the job market again, it may have improved slightly.

Yet, I disagree with Bloomberg when it says:

Money earned by the clipboard-toting workers going door-to-door to verify the government population survey is likely to be spent, giving the economy an extra lift.

“It’s a short-term stimulus program in which the government’s injecting money into the economy through additional paychecks,” said Dean Maki, chief U.S. economist at Barclays Capital Inc. in New York, who projects that 2.5 million more Americans will be working at the end of the year. “This will support consumer income during those months.”

I have trouble understanding why these jobs would do anything on their own to actually improve the economy. The lion’s share of these temporary workers will likely leave their unemployment checks behind to collect a paycheck from the U.S. Census Bureau instead. In other words, Uncle Sam will just be handing them money from a different pocket. And unless these jobs are surprisingly lucrative, I doubt he’ll be handing them a whole lot more money than most of them were collecting on unemployment anyway.

As a result, we won’t really see more spending as a result of temporary census jobs. Indeed, anyone who has these jobs will still be especially cautious about opening his or her wallet, since these jobs are temporary by nature. These workers will probably want to save whatever they can, because once these jobs end, they’ll be thrust back into an awful job market.

What’s worse, these jobs are utterly unproductive. These aren’t manufacturing jobs where these individuals are creating products to be sold overseas. They’re not infrastructure jobs that will improve roads and make commerce more efficient. They’re not even construction jobs to weatherize homes and help drive down U.S. energy costs. These workers will be walking from door to door and taking a count. Nothing will be produced except for some statistics, with no direct economic value.

Finally, census work might be better than no work, but that’s all it’s better than. These are likely jobs that will contribute very little to most of these individuals’ skill sets and career development. That means, other than perhaps timing, they’ll likely be in no better position to get a good job after the census ends than they were beforehand.

So are temporary census jobs better than nothing? Sure. But I see no reason to believe they’ll have any kind of stimulating effect on the economy.

  • The Perils and Joys: Cheese Souffl&eacute The Cheesemonger

2010_01_13-souffle.jpgSoufflés don’t play the middle ground very well: they’re either good or bad. Your success as creator hinges on the height of the rise (assuming it rises), the fluffiness of that rise, the doneness of the middle, and your ability to feed your guests before the inevitable collapse.

With the quaint recipe for one in Judith Jones’ new book, The Pleasures of Cooking for One, you not only evade the perilous task of making a souffle for 6 or 8, you can also make it tonight. Really. Just for yourself. And probably from scraps of cheese that you already have sitting around, just waiting to be grated and melted. Here, some tips from The Cheesemonger.

  • Sarah Palin FOX News Contributor

Sarah Palin, former Alaska governor and one-time GOP Vice-Presidential candidate, has signed on to be a regular contributor for the conservative FOX News Network, The New York Times said on Monday.

Let’s hope they don’t ask her any tough questions….

Quoting anonymous sources, the publication has learned that Palin recently inked a multi-year deal that will see the former politician appearing on various programs for the right-leaning network as a commentator and host.

According to The Times, the mother of five will not have her own show, but will host a series which is reportedly slated to occasionally air on the news network — similar to what commentator Oliver North already does at FOX.

When Palin resigned as governor of Alaska last summer, there was speculation that the Communication-Journalism major was clearing the way for a career in media. The new gig will reportedly allow Palin to pursue other ventures.

  • Google Plans to Upgrade Old Billboards in Street View

google_dec_08.jpgAccording to a new patent that was just granted to Google, the company could soon extend the reach of its advertising program in Google Maps to Street View. This patent, which was originally filed on July 7, 2008, describes a new system for promoting ads in online mapping applications. In this patent, Google describes how it plans to identify buildings, posters, signs and billboards in these images and give advertisers the ability to replace these images with more up-to-date ads. In addition, Google also seems to plan an advertising auction for unclaimed properties.

    Sponsor

In Google’s example, the software could identify the marquis and individual window posters on a theater property and replace them with new information. Through this, a theater could promote a new play in Street View, even if the actual Street View image is completely out of date.

    google_augmented_ads.jpg

The patent describes a two-step process for identifying potential advertising real estate in these images. Google’s software first identifies interest points in the image (e.g. the edges or corners of an object) and then generates features around these interest points. Google can then augment this region of the image with a link or replace a part of the current Street View image with a new image.

    google_augmented_ads_placement.jpg

What Happens When Somebody Wants to Put a Virtual Ad on Your Real-Life Billboard?

One of the most interesting aspects of the patent can be found in the following paragraph:

The link can be associated with a property owner, for example the property owner which owns the physical property portrayed. The link can alternatively be associated with an advertiser who placed the highest bid on the image recognized within the region of interest (e.g., poster, billboard, banner, etc.). Any portion of the geographic display image in which the region of interest is located can be selectable (e.g., hot-linked). For example, the image of the coffee shop can be hot-linked to an advertisement for the coffee shop.

This does open up some interesting questions. It makes perfect sense for the owner of a local coffee shop to advertise through this system, but in this patent, Google also describes an advertising auction. Does that mean that a rival coffee shop could also bid for ad space on the virtual image of a competitor’s store in Street View? Chances are this isn’t quite what Google has in mind, though it could definitely be a possibility. Instead, it looks like Google could potentially identify some billboards and banners in Street View images and then replace these real-life billboards with virtual ads from the highest bidders.
