In an important first for a promising new technology, scientists have used a quantum computer to calculate the precise energy of molecular hydrogen. This groundbreaking approach to molecular simulations could have profound implications, not just for quantum chemistry, but also for a range of fields from cryptography to materials science.
“One of the most important problems for many theoretical chemists is how to execute exact simulations of chemical systems,” said author Alán Aspuru-Guzik, assistant professor of chemistry and chemical biology at Harvard University. “This is the first time that a quantum computer has been built to provide these precise calculations.”
The work, described in Nature Chemistry and released Sunday (Jan. 10), comes from a partnership between Aspuru-Guzik’s team of theoretical chemists at Harvard and a group of experimental physicists led by Andrew White at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. Aspuru-Guzik’s team coordinated experimental design and performed key calculations, while his partners in Australia assembled the physical “computer” and ran the experiments.
“We were the software guys,” said Aspuru-Guzik, “and they were the hardware guys.”
While modern supercomputers can perform approximate simulations of simple molecular systems, increasing the size of the system results in an exponential increase in computation time. Quantum computing has been heralded for its potential to solve some problems that are impossible for conventional computers to crack.
Rather than using binary bits labeled as “zero” and “one” to encode data, as in a conventional computer, quantum computing stores information in qubits, which can represent both “zero” and “one” simultaneously. When a quantum computer is put to work on a problem, it considers all possible answers by simultaneously arranging its qubits into every combination of “zeroes” and “ones.”
Since one sequence of qubits can represent many numbers, a quantum computer would make far fewer computations than a conventional one in solving some problems. After the computer’s work is done, a measurement of its qubits provides the answer.
“Because classical computers don’t scale efficiently, if you simulate anything larger than four or five atoms — for example, a chemical reaction, or even a moderately complex molecule — it becomes an intractable problem very quickly,” said author James Whitfield, research assistant in chemistry and chemical biology at Harvard. “Approximate computations of such systems are usually the best chemists can do.”
Aspuru-Guzik and his colleagues confronted this problem with a conceptually elegant idea.
“If it is computationally too complex to simulate a quantum system using a classical computer,” he said, “why not simulate quantum systems with another quantum system?”
Such an approach could, in theory, result in highly precise calculations while using a fraction of the resources of conventional computing.
While a number of other physical systems could serve as a computer framework, Aspuru-Guzik’s colleagues in Australia used the information encoded in two entangled photons to conduct their hydrogen molecule simulations. Each calculated energy level was the result of 20 such quantum measurements, resulting in a highly precise measurement of each geometric state of molecular hydrogen.
“This approach to computation represents an entirely new way of providing exact solutions to a range of problems for which the conventional wisdom is that approximation is the only possibility,” said Aspuru-Guzik.
Ultimately, the same quantum computer that could transform Internet cryptography could also calculate the lowest energy conformations of molecules as complex as cholesterol.
Aspuru-Guzik and Whitfield’s Harvard co-authors on the paper are Ivan Kassal, Jacob D. Biamonte, and Masoud Mohseni. Financial support was provided by the U.S. Army Research Office and the Australian Research Council Federation Fellow and Centre of Excellence programs. Aspuru-Guzik recently received support from the DARPA Young Investigator Program, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, and the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation Inc. to pursue research toward practical quantum simulators.
Are you buried under two feet of snow? Is there white stuff on your windowsill and in your boots? Much of the country has received a seemingly unending supply of snow these past two weeks, and so we’ve decided to stop complaining about it and get inspired instead! Rajendra K. Pachauri, chairman of UN’s Nobel Peace Prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), had advocated emission reductions at the recently concluded Copenhagen Climate Summit.
But back home in India, he seems to be failing to uphold standards of propriety in his professional dealings.
During his tenure, first as director from 1982, and then as director-general of The Energy Research Institute (TERI) since 2001, Pachauri was a member of the boards of the Oil and Natural Gas Commission (ONGC), Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) and National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), three of India’s biggest public sector energy companies, all of whom by the very nature of their business contribute heavily to greenhouse gas emissions. These emissions, according to the IPCC, are adding to the country’s growing carbon footprint and hastening climate change.

Here is my question… very close to and just below the moon was a bright star/planet… again I assume it must have been very bright if I could see it so close to the Moon and with so much "light pollution" around me. I could not see any other stars, although the sky was clear.
Any thoughts?
Thanks 🙂

Starwood Energy Infrastructure Fund, a dedicated energy fund managed by private equity firm Starwood Energy Group, is planning to significantly expand its solar photovoltaic generation portfolio north of the border, in Ontario. Last week, the fund officially closed financing on two PV solar power plants that combined will generate 20 megawatts of electricity and cost C$100 million ($96.6 million) to develop.
It turns out that’s just a start for Starwood. The Connecticut fund is in active discussion to secure regulatory approval to add another 40 megawatts to the 20-megawatt project. An industry source tells us that Starwood expects to get a regulatory green light for the 40-megawatt extension by the end of the first quarter. The plant’s initial 20-megawatts are scheduled to be operational in the third quarter of this year.
Like the initial phase, the extension would be located in Sault Saint Marie, Ont. The output would be sold as part of a 20-year power purchase agreement to the Ontario Power Authority under the Renewable Energy Standard Offer Program (RESOP), a provincial initiative that, among other things, seeks to replace coal-fired power plants with renewable energy projects.
A source tells us that the 40-megawatt PV facility will use panels from Q-Cells, the German PV maker, and is estimated to cost about C$200 million ($193 million) to develop.
German project finance bank Norddeutsche Landesbank Girozentrale (Nord/LB), which has provided bank debt to support the construction of the initial 20 megawatts, will likely clinch the funding mandate for the additional 40 megawatts as well. Executives at Starwood and Nord/LB declined to comment.

It is very natural for a person to loss 50 to 100 hairs each day under the body’s hair renewal process. But most of the people at least once in their lifetime suffer with heavy hair loss. There may be various reason behind this; like medication, chemotherapy, exposure to radiations and certain chemicals, nutritional and hormonal factors, thyroid disease, skin disease or stress, etc.
In most of the cases hair loss is temporary but in certain cases it may be permanent depending on the severity of disease. Some of the most common causes of hair loss are explained here.
HORMONAL
Hormones are stimulant to hair growth and causes hair loss problems. Hormones affect heavily our hair growth. These affect both male as well as female hair health.
Hair thinning is one of the hormonal problems and affects both men and women. Hair thinning in male is specific and follows a pattern from the front through to the crown. Hair thinning in female does not follow any specific pattern.
Hair thinning is caused by androgen DHT or Dihydrotesterone. Everyone has DHT but only some suffers with hair problem, are you wandering, why? This owes to the hair follicles, which have a greater number of androgen receptors for the DHT to attach with. Till date the most effective treatment for the problems of hair thinning is; anti androgens. Anti androgens are preventive drugs that prevent the creation of DHT. In future we may get genes therapy for hair thinning problems.
Childbirth
Many of the females experience hair loss after labor. In such a situation many of the hair enters the telogen or resting phase. Some of the females experiences hair loss within two to three months after giving childbirth.
Hair problem due to pregnancy is temporary and in many of the cases eradicate within time, say 1 to 6 months. This occurs because of diverse hormonal changes that take place within the body during pregnancy.
Birth control pills
The females who are genetically programmed with Androgenic Alopecia, if takes birth control pills at much younger age encounters hair loss. Androgenic Alopecia is caused due to various hormonal changes.
The females who have history of hair loss in their family must consult doctor before taking any birth control pills. This type of hair loss is temporary and may stop in 1 to 6 months. But in some of the cases, it has been noticed that a female cannot regrow some of her hair that was lost due to Androgenic Alopecia.
Deficient diet
A good balanced diet rich in varied variety of nutrients is equally important to your hair health. The person who eats less of proteins or has irregular eating habits suffers with hair loss. Generally to save protein our body pushes growing hair into resting phase. If your hair can be pulled out by the root very easily, then this may be due to lack of a well balanced diet. This condition can be prevailed by eating a diet rich in proteins and other necessary nutrients.
Low serum iron
If some person either may not have access to iron rich food or his / her body may not absorb enough of iron then this may cause hair problems. Women during menstrual period are more prone to be iron deficient. Low iron in the body can be detected by laboratory test and can be corrected by taking a diet rich in iron and iron pills.
Disease Or Illness
Hair loss due to some disease or illness is very common, but this type of hair loss is temporary and lost hair may grow again. Diseases like sever infection or flu and high fever, thyroid disease etc may lead to hair loss.
Certain medications, cancer treatments, and chronic illnesses also cause hair loss. A person who receives surgery also faces hair loss problems.
However, hair loss problems of any sort are generally temporary and can be solved by taking good nutritious diet and professional help.

Provillus for women is a relatively new product in an area that has previously only catered for men. Provillus for women provides a hair loss treatment designed especially for women – providing a solution to a problem that has been in the past rather neglected.
Almost all balding treatment products were made to treat the premature baldness of men. The majority of the products made available to the market were formulated specifically for men and were unsuitable for treating women’s hair loss. Some of these treatments were even potentially harmful to unborn children. Provillus for woman is a real breakthrough today for women who are losing their hair and looking for a safe and effective solution.
The specially formulated hair treatment represents a new development in the treatment of hair fall problems. As a way to understand how Provillus for women works, it is necessary to know what causes hair loss in women.
The factors that contribute to women’s hair fall is not as clearly defined as those that affect cause men’s hair loss; however, genetics and heredity accounts for more than 90% of women’s hair loss – the same way it does for men. Hormones also play a huge role in women’s hair loss. An imbalance in a woman’s hormone levels – which may be brought about by under active or overactive thyroid glands – may sometimes lead to balding and hair thinning. Treating the hormonal problem usually addresses the loss caused by thyroid problems. Hormonal imbalances may also be caused by menopause or pregnancy – both of which contribute to hair fall in women.
Provillus works by providing women’s hair an environment that encourages healthy growth of hair. This treatment designed for women tackles the problems that cause women’s hair loss by providing natural ingredients that are proven to provide nourishment to the hair and heal damaged follicles. Provillus also comes with an optional solution that may be applied topically and contains substances known to cure hair loss such as Minoxidil and Azelaic Acid.
Provillus contains vitamin B-6 which is essential in promoting healthy hair growth. It also contains magnesium, biotin, Equisetum Arvense, and Para-amino benzoic Acid – ingredients known to help in nourishing hair and promoting healthier hair growth. As previously stated, it has an optional topical solution containing Minoxidil, an FDA approved treatment.
There are few treatments currently available to women who are suffering from hair loss, so women have previously been forced to using products that were designed for male pattern baldness. Some such products include Propecia, Rogaine (Also Rogaine for women has been recently released), and Procerin. These product’s have not shown great results in treating womens baldness because male and female hair loss are often caused in very different ways which makes it like treating two separate things. This is why a product designed especially for women should always be used.
