  • Etymotic moving-coil based earphones ears-on

Etymotic is holding down fort in the iLounge Pavilion at CES showcasing its new line of less expensive moving-coil based headphones. The mc-series consists of the hf2, hf3, and hf5, and employs the moving-coil sound tech instead of more expensive balanced armiture hardware. As Etymotic explained, it’s the extra air chamber that makes the moving coil acoustics better than they would normally be. We’re not crazy audiophiles, and we can’t really make a realistic judgment in the middle of the Las Vegas Convention Center, but the sound quality was definitely passable. They’ve got a couple of models sporting in-line remote controls for iPhone / iPod touch, and you can score ‘em in any color to match your iPod nano. Check the neon ‘buds out in our gallery below.

    THE RESORT RESIDENCES
    at El Conquistador

    Fajardo

    Link: http://www.mve-architects.com/portfo…r-Resort-Hotel

Puerto Rico’s El Conquistador Resort Hotel is a first-class international destination that attracts discriminating travelers in search of a relaxing vacation spot in a magnificent environment. MVE intends to set high design standards for the next phases of this overall development and let it become the "living" example for future phases. The site of "The Resort Residences at El Conquistador" is situated some 240 feet above the water, with picture perfect views of the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. The Resort Residences phase includes four mid-rise condominium buildings of 52 units each and 20 "residencias" of one and two-story villas, plus extensive gardens, patios, terraces and water elements.

MVE’s design style respects and takes advantage of the Puerto Rican history, traditions, culture and life style, and its architectural character is a timeless contemporary interpretation of elements responding to the local climate and the virtually unlimited views. The top levels of these new condominium buildings step back to continue the line of the natural grade, and the single family residences are designed with the main entry at the top level to follow the grade, with the second level below. Sloped roofs, natural and pre-cast stone, smooth plaster and wood materials are used to accent specific design elements and to achieve a playful and well proportioned contemporary vacation resort character.

    Ingredients

    • 1/2 of a 17-1/4-ounce package frozen puff pastry, thawed (1 sheet)
    • 1 egg
    • 1 tablespoon water
    • 1/3 cup sliced almonds, coarsely chopped
    • 2 tablespoons sugar
    • 2 3-ounce packages cream cheese, softened
    • 3 tablespoons sugar
    • 2 tablespoons amaretto or orange juice
    • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
    • 1/2 cup whipping cream
    • 2 cups sliced strawberries
    • 1/4 cup current jelly, melted

    Directions

    1. On a lightly floured surface roll pastry sheet to a 12-inch square. Cut out an 11-inch heart. Transfer heart to an ungreased baking sheet. Cut excess pastry into 3/4-inch-wide strips. In a small cup, beat egg and water. Brush egg mixture in a3/4-inch border around top of heart. Twist pastry strips and arrange around top edge of heart to make a border, brushing ends with egg mixture and overlapping strips slightly. Brush pastry with egg mixture. Prick center of pastry with a fork. Sprinkle pastry with almonds and the 2 tablespoons sugar.

    2. Bake in a 375 degree F oven for 12 to 15 minutes or until pastry is browned, pricking bottom once with fork if necessary to make it puff evenly. Let tart cool on baking sheet on a wire rack.

    3. In a medium mixing bowl beat cream cheese and the 3 tablespoons sugar with an electric mixer on medium speed about 1 minute or until fluffy. Add amaretto or orange juice and vanilla. Beat until thoroughly combined; set aside. In a chilled mixing bowl beat whipping cream with chilled beaters of an electric mixer or medium speed until soft peaks form. Fold into cream cheese mixture. Spoon filling into cooled pastry shell and spread evenly.

    4. Arrange sliced strawberries over filling, overlapping to cover filling completely. Brush with melted jelly. Cover; chill in the refrigerator up to 2 hours before serving. Makes 6 servings.

  • Getting Kids in the Kitchen

When I was growing up I was not allowed to make messes – especially not kitchen messes. I really can’t blame my mom for her preference… One time my parents were gone for a few hours and left me home alone. I must have been about ten.  I decided that I was going to surprise them with a cake. I carefully pulled out Mom’s old Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook (circa 1950) and decided on what seemed like a simple vanilla layer cake.

My 6 year old and I made these snails for lunch.

My 6 year old and I made these snails for lunch.

Several hours later my mom walked in to a battle zone. Flour on the walls, ceiling, and everywhere. Batter splashed here and there. And a lop-sided, not very good first attempt at a cake. I would love to give you warm fuzzies and tell you she smiled, thanked me, and ate a bite of the cake proclaiming it delicious but that was not the case. She took one look, hyperventilated and began the loudest scream in the history of the universe. She then unceremoniously dumped the cake in the trash and told me to stay the hell out of the kitchen.

    Ooops.

I handle things much different. I put up with the messes because I like what happens in the kitchen when we are all in there. I like having kids that cook and enjoy cooking and food. The messes are momentary in the grand scheme of things.

For some reason cooking brings families together. Whether you are creating a meal or merely baking a batch of cookies it is generally quality time for all. The mess will eventually be cleaned up but the memories will last forever.

My kids spend a lot of time in the kitchen… eating, cooking, talking, spraying each other with water… Someday I may only be cooking for one or two and my kitchen will stay clean and tidy. The house will be quiet. The flour will be in the canister and the refrigerator will be free of fingerprints.  And I will miss these days terribly.

Invite your kids in the kitchen with you. Make the sous chefs, give them something to do no matter how young they are. As they grow you will be glad you did.

  • On the 2010 Census report, will you be classified as a Negro?

    Black Panther Party.jpg

This is me showing off the back of the shirt I wore to my cousin’s ’70s party.

    I’m a 28-year-old Negro.

If you’re looking at your screen with a perplexed expression, that was the same reaction I had when I read that the Census still has the term “Negro” on their 2010 questionnaire. The last time I participated in the Census, there was a guy strolling through the dorms to get college kids‘ responses, but for the life of me, I don’t recall him asking me if I was “Black, African-American or Negro.” If he did, I’d have probably thought he was trying to be funny and slammed the door.

But according to BlackVoices.com, more than 56,000 people filled in the blank line for race category with the term “Negro.” I didn’t even know people used the word. My 97-year-old great great aunt has always called herself black and Creole. My 87-year-old grandfather likes to rile me up by calling me “colored,” but for the most part he says black or African-American.

As far as I can tell, the term “Negro” stopped being used in the ’50s so why the Census is still using it today is just plain ironic. The purpose of the Census is to get up-to-date information on the people living in our world, but they’re using outdated terms to do it. Isn’t that a little hypocritical?

BlackVoices.com does have a point about those who aren’t really comfortable calling themselves African-Americans when they don’t know squat about Africa outside of having a similar complexion and their ancestors being from the Motherland. (Yes, I’m aware that the oldest person on Earth was from Africa, but I’m talking about those who choose to identify themselves to be of African ancestry.) Then there are those who refuse to call themselves black because they “are not a color.” I guess you can’t please everyone.

I more commonly say I’m black, mainly because I dug the whole “Black and I’m Proud” era with afros, fighting for civil rights, the original purpose of the Black Panther Party and the entire era of black literature, music and business becoming more visible. I’m fascinated with Black Wall Street, a neighborhood full of black millionaires who made it against the odds.

I’ve heard differing debates about whether black people created the term African-American and those who flat out refuse to call themselves American because their ancestors weren’t brought here willingly. I always find the latter debate odd because as much as these same people protest America and being born in America, I very rarely see a suitcase packed to go back. (Somebody is going to be mad at me for that sentence, but it’s true. I’m definitely not proud of all of America‘s history and there are times when I’m not proud to be American–and not the PC reason First Lady Michelle Obama gave–but I’m content living in America because of the progress and history being made.)

I can understand using the term “Negro” when reading literature or referring to a time in history (ex. Negro History Week as opposed to Black History Month), but I have a problem with selecting an outdated term like “Negro” on the Census report.

Razer hits the Xbox 360 with Onza controller and Chimaera headset, we go hands-on (video)
Razer’s come from nowhere over the past few years to establish itself as a serious player in the PC gaming peripheral market. Now it’s hitting the consoles, starting with the Xbox 360, and the first iteration of offerings are already looking solid. They were announced yesterday and we got some time with both, starting with the Onza contoller, described in detail in the video after the break. Each stick’s resistance can be individually tweaked, there are additional shoulder buttons that can be assigned to replicate any other button on the controller (no more stick-clicking), and what’s pledged to be a d-pad that’s far superior to the generally junk one on the stock controller. Unfortunately they were still working on perfecting that, but everything else feels great already. The other thing on display is the Chimaera wireless headset, which uses a base-station to connect to the Xbox 360 (or other audio device) which doubles as a recharging station. Turn it on and it’ll intercept the audio, silencing your entertainment center, and with a built-in microphone you won’t have to stop the trash-talk. The Onza is set to cost $50 when it ships sometime by Q3, and the Chimaera for about $130 in the same period. We can’t wait.
