Although best-known for sucking in about 70 million people to become online farmers and crop-growers in Farmville, Zynga has also started using virtual goods to raise money for different social causes. The company launched a “Sweet Seeds” initiative last fall, in which users can purchase special sweet potato seeds, sending 50 percent of the proceeds to two non-profit organizations in Haiti. It ended up raising more than $800,000.
“It opened my eyes to the potential of social gaming and how we’ll see virtual goods raise amazing amounts of money for great causes in a scalable way,” said Zynga CEO Mark Pincus on-stage at the Crunchies ceremony tonight.
Every year, Silicon Valley’s biggest blogs (including us) put together the Crunchies Awards, where the community can vote for the best entrepreneurs, startups and investors. Pincus’ full comments are below.
Michael Arrington: You’ve raised $220 million and you’re the undisputed king of social games. So a lot of people want to hear your advice and your thoughts on the future of web. What can the rest of the Internet learn from what you’re doing?
Mark Pincus: I think there’s such huge potential for us to take what happens on Facebook across the rest of the Internet. You come across these social breadcrumbs that lead you to some serendipitous place. From a marketing and business standpoint, there’s an opportunity for the kinds of growth that we’ve seen in social games to happen on smaller web sites. This isn’t about games. I think the kinds of mechanics that are in our games will be part of the way you build a great interactive experience on Techcrunch, eBay or anywhere else. Those mechanics can also drive more people to find out about you and derive revenues from users.
Arrington: Does that mean a small site can give up on AdSense and make more money from social?
Pincus: Yea, if you think about it, you don’t get a lot of advertising value from the nature of your audience. If you slot an ad network in — for example, like Fred Wilson, he doesn’t get a whole lot of value despite the socio-economic level of his audience. He could make more money.
Arrington: How much time a day do you spend playing Farmville?
Pincus: Last week, I was so caught up in redecorating my farm, I literally missed an appointment.
Arrington: More people play Farville than live in the U.K. It’s twice the size of Canada. Last question, tell me about Zynga.org. What have you accomplished and where is it going?
Pincus: We wanted to experiment with the idea of social virtual goods. We experiemented with ASPCA-branded virtual goods. We found that people that wouldn’t normally participate would buy them if it went to a cause. We went from a test to full-scale deployment with Sweet Seeds for Haiti. It opened my eyes to the potential of social gaming and how we’ll see virtual goods raise amazing amounts of money for great causes in a scalable way. When you’re in a social environemnt, there are different ways you build social capital. What is the ROI we’re spending in five minutes on Facebook or in a game. There’s a potential for to expand the number of people engaged in virtual goods. I hoep the industry totally rips off that idea and takes it everywhere.
Arrington: What are Zynga revenues?
Pincus: Uh, let’s see.
Arrington: Thank you very much.

Shark Tank Tv Show 2010 Live
Posted on January 09th, 2010 in U.S. News (edit)
First, be on your game…these guys are the real deal and can sniff out problems before you can even attempt to overcome any objections. So, if you’re planning on trying out for the show:
1. Flesh the idea out.
2. Be clear about the costs vs profit.
3. Make sure you understand fully how they can earn their money back and turn that huge profit quickly.
4. And most important…don’t be a pig when it comes to dividing shares (learned that the hard way).
What we experienced with the Sharks is what makes the show so entertaining – and dare we say it – educational.
Contestants pitch there business ideas to a panel of big-wigs and, if the concept is good enough, they could walk away with investment capital for their effort. Not a bad take in exchange for the possibility of coming off as a dope on camera.
The investors see the show as an opportunity for themselves, too, in both business and publicity for the ventures – and make no mistake, these guys are in it to win it.Jason also asked her what makes for a successful salesperson. If you want to succeed, do you have to be a born salesperson? Do you have to do months of expensive market research and have every I dotted and every T crossed? Or does it take something else? Corcoran lays it out there: You don’t have to be buttoned-up to make money. But you do need something else.
Take her advice and next season, you could be standing in front of her on Shark Tank.
While Jason was there, one of last season’s most memorable entrepreneurs, plus-size fashion designer Gayla Bentley, arrived at Corcoran’s office for a hard-core business meeting. Bentley had flown up from Houston, Texas, to go toe-to-toe with her Shark investors, Corcoran and Daymond John, to hammer out the next step of her global domination.
Before Jason knew it, Corcoran and Bentley were settling in at the conference table, and he got evicted. The jokes ended, and it was all business.

ASUS may be in the process of spinning off the Pegatron brand, but for now it’s still the same company behind this here slick white smartbook. Running the inevitable Android OS on a 10-inch display, but offering the never-boring Tegra 2 combo of 1080p playback and up to a “full day” of WiFi-enabled battery juice, the prototype machine was being shown off to give us a hint of what’s to come. We’re told the Neo is definitely coming later in the year, though the particulars of the price tag and distributor badge are not yet revealed. For our money, this was a spectacularly thin and light pseudo-laptop — it’s hard to overstate just how deprived of weight this thing is. Opening it up shows an appealing layout and keyboard, which were rather spoiled by a number of creaky and unstable parts. We found deep flex in the keyboard panel and around the hinges, but our optimistic souls are willing to put those things down to it being a demo unit. If this featherweight design makes it to market without sacrificing any of the good bits while getting rid of the bad ones, we’d recommend it in a hot and sweaty second.

VIZIO’s announced 2010 lineup is alright and we’ll get to them in a minute, but a few slick concepts were more than enough to distract us momentarily from nearer future products. What did we get our eyes on? Check the gallery and continue our shared experience with a 1/4″ thick “Blade” LCD TV, 24-inch portable wireless (WiFi) HDTV, universal touchscreen IR remote, Quad HD display, Bluetooth headphones and of course the 58-inch 21:9 ultrawidescreen beauty shown above. We wouldn’t be surprised if at least some of thse are closer to production than several announced products here in Vegas, so check the video & press release after the break before trawling the shelves of local Wal-marts looking for a leak.

Eminem IS NOT DEAD! This is another celebrity death hoax. How can you tell if something is for real or something is fake? For one, mainstream media reports will tell you if someone died or not. For instance, if Fox News reports that someone passed away you can be certain that it took place.
However, a site like “CNN Source” – which has no affiliation with CNN – says that someone died you might want to look at the facts on a regular news site before busting out in to tears.
Here’s a hint – look in the URL to see if you are at a legit site. One site appeared to be Yahoo! News, but turned out to be an angelfire.com site. This is not a credible news source.

A quick demonstration of the Nexus One’s voice input capabilities. I think I should point out that this occured in a very noisy environment. The woman doing the demo had to speak quite loudly for me to hear her and to be distinguishable on camera. Given the circumstances, the result is pretty impressive. But can it interpret lollercoasters?

Android in washing machines! Android in tablets! Android in… a desk phone? If you’re still plugged into a landline all day at work, you next phone might just run Google’s smartphone OS.
To say that the Touch Revolution Nimble just runs Android is a bit of an understatement, because it actually runs on an extremely thorough custom interface designed by The Astonishing Tribe, the firm that conceived the original Android UI. The result makes me very, very jealous. Or at least it would, if I ever used a traditional phone for anything, which I don’t, because I’m under the age of 35, and I have a strange job on the internet. Anyway! Here’s how it works:
You’ll probably never see the Nimble as the Nimble again, since this is a reference design to be sold to phone manufacturers and resold under a different brand. And you’ll probably never get to buy one, because they’ll be marketed as enterprise devices, not consumer phones. But who cares! CES is all about gawking at stuff you’ll never buy, in case you haven’t noticed.
