  • Vernacular sustainable architecture in Vietnam?

    Hello everyone,
Thank you for spending your time reading up on this post. I am a third year architecture student at the University of Oregon, US. My subjects of focus are housing projects for low-income families and sustainable architecture (only in the sense of self-sustaining). I am currently doing an architecture studio whose project is incubated (hypothetical of course) in Saigon, roughly around the intersection of Nguyen Du street and Nam Ky Khoi Nghia street. The reason being for me to open this thread is to find out more about how Vietnam has approached to sustainable architecture. Also I’d like to know more about the preservation of the historical city fabric. Has it been paid a lot of attention to? Have all the new buildings recently erected taken in consideration the context and history? If not, why do you think that is? And what are the things that Vietnam needs to do in order to preserve what sets it apart from other countries?
Pictures, Precedent Studies and links are great. Thanks again and I am looking forward to see what you have to say šŸ™‚

  • The Upside Forest of Mendenhall Gardens

    Alaska, US | Extraordinary Flora

While Alaska’s glaciers may have world wide renown, the Mendenhall Valley contains its own marvel lovingly crafted by Glacier Garden Rainforest Adventure owners Steve and Cindy Bowhay.

Dotted throughout the garden, upside down trees, known as the ‘Flower Towers’, have had their tops buried in the ground and their roots thrust up in the air, forming a basket that cradles brilliantly bright trailing flowers. Netting and mosses form a bed in the center of the root ball for flowers such as begonias, fuchsias, and petunias to bloom and delicately hang down from the tree.

The Mendenhall Glacier itself is a rarity, as it is one of the world’s few drive-up glaciers. In 1984, heavy rain and snow deposits caused a landslide that demolished much of the face of Thunder Mountain, uprooting nearly everything and destroying one of the main streams. The land was left destroyed and bare until 1985 when Steve and Cindy Bowhay purchased some six and a half acres, beginning a reclamation process that would end up with them acquiring an additional 44.5 acres of the area, much of it part of the Tongass National Rainforest.

Steve, a landscaper by trade, wanted to use the stream’s water for a hydro-electricity plant to power new greenhouses; settling ponds were designed throughout in order to slow the rate of water =erosion and provide a series of waterfalls on the Gardens property. Their plan for the rest of the land was to create a guided tour for visitors to enjoy both the beautiful landscape as well as the natural panoramic view of Juneau that the Thunder Mountain rock face cliff provides.

During the process of rebuilding the stream, stories have it that Steve accidentally damaged the moving equipment and, in a fit of frustration, used the machine to pick up a large fallen tree stump and slam it upside down into the soft mud. The image of roots hanging down like petunia vines apparently gave him the inspiration to repeat his action, inverting over 20 other dead Spruce and Hemlock trees in order to plant 75-100 flowers in the ‘root bowls’ each year.

Other flowers that flourish in the garden include Rhododendrons, Azaleas, Japanese Maples, Devil’s Club, Elderberry shrubs, Sitka Spruce, and Western Hemlock. The gardens are open from May through September, offering tours aboard their covered carts to cruise ship passengers and landlubbers alike.

  • Interesting incident

Since no one else in my household has to deal with prediabetes, I have been trying to stay on my diet with the limited options at home, until I can go shopping tomorrow. After feeling very hungry after not eating enough, I caved and had two small slices of pizza with black beans for dinner. Afterward, I drank 3 glasses of water, and I was bracing myself for a high 1hr PP number. When I tested before I ate, it was 82, and my 1hr PP number was 78! Do you think the water is the reason why my numbers did not spike? I don’t intend on repeating this sort of thing often, but do you think this is a good way to work the glucose out of my system on those days where my meal may be too carby? Thanks!

  • Man Sues Neighbor For Not Turning Off WiFi And Cell Phone

For years, we’ve heard of people freaking out about WiFi or mobile phones, claiming they have “electromagnetic sensitivity” to those things. The only problem is that in double-blind tests, there is no evidence that any sensitivity is due to electromagnetic waves. And yet, people keep insisting it must be true. In the latest extreme case, a guy in Santa Fe is suing his neighbor for not turning off his WiFi or mobile phone, saying that it caused him to become homeless:

Firstenberg “cannot stay in a hotel, because hotels and motels all employ wi-fi connections, which trigger a severe illness,” says the request for a preliminary injunction. “If (Firstenberg) cannot obtain preliminary relief, he will be forced to continue to sleep in his car, enduring winter cold and discomfort, until this case can be heard.”

  • Viliv P3 is like the Zii Egg of devices that don’t run Plaszma OS (hands-on)

When we approached the just-introduced Viliv P3, we were cautiously optimistic that we were looking at a phone. Needless to say, our hopes would go on to be mercilessly dashed, but in the wake of the carnage, we were still left with an intriguing PMP with a big AMOLED display and an 800MHz Cortex A8 processor. You could argue that the most compelling feature, though, is that it clocks in at just 9.8mm thick — a full 1.7mm thinner than the Nexus One while still managing 800 x 480 resolution. It felt a little creaky, but we were assured that the unit on hand was an early prototype — and honestly, we’d even be willing to take a little creakiness on a production model if you get this kind of thickness (or lack thereof) in return. It’s also got 720p TV-out, storage up to 32GB, optional T-DMB and DAB tuners, an exposed microSD slot on the bottom, and — check this out — Windows CE dual-boot capability, although the unit here only had Android installed. Stuff an HSPA radio in there and call it good, guys. Follow the break for a quick video of the P3 in action.

  • Andy Rubin on multitouch in Android: ā€˜I personally don’t like two-handed operations’

In a very special CES edition of All Things D today, our own Joshua Topolsky had an opportunity to directly confront Google’s Andy Rubin on the nagging multitouch issue — not necessarily multitouch itself, but the growing disparity in support between American and European devices (the Droid / Milestone being the most famous example):

“You call this a superphone — 3.7-inch capacitive display, but no keyboard and no multitouch. Yet it has multitouch outside the US. Why not America?”

    Andy’s reply:

“It’s not an America versus outside America kind of thing. It’s a decision that is a result of the OEM model. I personally don’t like two-handed operations… there is no conspiracy.”

That doesn’t explain the fact that the European Nexus One seems to have some in-built multitouch enabled — nor does it explain why any manufacturer would ever opt to exclude it under any circumstances unless there’s some outside pressure involved. Surely Rubin’s personal preferences don’t play into this… right? Right, Google?

  • NUU Player runs Boxee on Atom

D-Link’s Boxee Box might be the Tegra 2-powered star of CES, but it’s not the only hardware running Boxee — NUU Media’s NUU player runs the grown-up version of XBMC on an Atom processor alongside some other custom apps. It’s also got a 160GB local hard drive and runs a WebKit browser, compared to no local storage and Mozilla on the Boxee Box. What’s more, there’s also a Skype app and Bluetooth support, so you’ll be able to make and take calls from the couch using a headset. Of course, all that means it’ll cost “around $300″ instead of the Box’s “under $200″ when it launches around March, but we know some of you might spend the extra coin for the more home theater-rack friendly form factor alone. Pics in the gallery, video after the break!

  • Casio Exilim EX-FH100 hands-on in super-slow-mo

We’re suckers for slow motion video, and Casio’s clearly tapped into a vast supply of FPS to feed our cravings. The latest in its series of high speed cameras is the Exilim EX-FH100 point and shoot. It does 10 megapixel stills, high speed burst capture and up to 1,000 FPS video. Like with other Casio models, the higher the frame rate, the lower the resolution, but you can get a full VGA image at 120 FPS. At $349 it’s practically a bargain if you absolutely need to do slow motion, and while it’s a bit chubby and heavy in comparison to “fashionable” point and shoots, it’s plenty capable as a stills camera to keep this from being a one trick pony. Check out the slow-motion capabilities after the break.

  • Tpi Composites Stock Symbol 2010

TPI is expanding its facility in anticipation of a greater demand for composite wind turbine blades from its customer General Electric and General Electric’s wind farm customers.

TPI is just one of 183 projects and $2.3 billion in tax credits that the White House announced today. These tax credits will create tens of thousands of high quality clean energy jobs and support domestic manufacturing of advanced clean energy technologies including solar, wind and efficiency and energy management technologies.
TPI Composites Inc is building a new manufacturing facility in Nebraska to produce next generation wind turbine blades. TPI Composites got $2.3 billion Tax Credit this year. TPI says the facility will create over 200 new jobs and will have a capacity equivalent to supplying 265 turbines rated at 2.5 MW for a total electrical output of 663 MW. TPI will also be expanding their existing manufacturing facility in Iowa. TPI’s composite materials are also used for lighter, stronger, and more fuel efficient vehicles. $52 million for world-leader Vestas to expand U.S. turbine blade production.

  • Petra

    Asia, Globe | Subterranean Sites

Built sometime around 1550-1292 B.C. as a capital city for the Nabataeans, an ancient Semetic peoples, Petra is perhaps one of the most astonishing wonders of the ancient world. It lay undiscovered to the modern western world until 1812.

But as high as the reputation of Petra is, the reality surpasses it. The great postcard images of the Treasury, the Monastery, the water channels in the Siq (approach canyon) do not convey the main events of the experience of visiting it, which are: the sequence of arrival, the overpowering geology (endless towering convoluted rocks), the enormous scale (hundreds of monumental-geological tombs going on for miles), and how manifestly yet to be discovered most of the city really is.

The approach to Petra takes almost an hour on foot. Before one enters the Siq (Siq translates to “shaft” and is the narrow gorge entrance to the city of Petra) a few scattered rock tombs introduce the terms of monumental Nabatean discourse — huge cubical forms cut out of vivid sandstone, cliff faces sculpted smooth and vertical with spare bas relief motifs of five ascending steps and Greek-column forms, and abyssal black tomb openings.

Thus prepped and taut with anticipation, one enters the Siq — as narrow, high, extravagant, and nervous-making as the slot canyons of the American southwest. One enters from its top, so the walk is gently downhill, easy and inviting. It it both a wild canyon and profoundly civilized. On each side of the narrow flood-sculpted passageway (sometimes 1 feet wide, 200 feet deep) is a waist-high ancient water channel, carved swervingly along the cliff curves. One was for agriculture, the other for people and animals.
    It is conspicuously brilliant hydrology.

There begins to be architectural elements — carved niches almost worn away, bench forms, a watering trough for animals, and — recently discovered — the feet and legs of a realistically sculpted man leading two camels down the Siq, just larger than life size.

You keep anticipating the famous first glimpse of the Treasury framed at the end of the Siq. When it comes, your camera leaps into your hand. Okay! Consummation! Then the surprises begin.

The scale is all wrong. The Treasury is as beautifully shaped, well preserved, and sandy pink as expected, but it is not jewel-like at all. It towers WAY up over you and a day of awe induced neck-craning begins. Inside the large entrance is a vast, perfect cube of space inside the mountain. The ceiling is not arched but absolutely horizontal, 50 feet by 50 feet.

The Treasury is truly amazing, a revelation, but without the Siq leading down to it, it would be merely impressive. Once into Petra the city begins, first a lengthy necropolis of tombs in the widening canyon, then signs of the once-living metropolitan area of 30,000 people. The tombs vie with each other for massiveness, reaching far up the mountains on each side, crowding and overlapping — a teeming, almost overpopulated necropolis.

The fantastic natural rock landscape is so extensively carved, and so much of the carving is so eroded that it looks natural, your eyes can’t stop examining every rock surface near and far, parsing artificial from natural and delighting the more in both.

There are modern amenities in this ancient city, provided by resident Bedouin children and adults. Coffee, camel rides in the canyon, burro rides to the peaks, some books (purveyed by a New Zealand lady who married into the Petra Bedouin) are all available. Past ever grander tombs, a Roman colonnade, a Byzantine church (discovered in 1992), a huge free-standing temple, is lunch and a museum.

A few miles away and very much worth visiting is ā€œLittle Petraā€, the fountainhead of the whole Nabatean complex — a hydrological masterpiece of water channels, stone stairways, huge echoing cisterns, and dwelling caves.

A hymn of water and rock, ancient and modern, the dead and the living, ultimately, Petra is indescribable.

  • How Do I Automatically Shut Down My Computer at a Certain Time?

    Dear Lifehacker,
I like to watch TV on my computer at night but sometimes I fall asleep before the program ends. How can I set my computer to shut down at a certain time or after it finishes specific events?

    Signed,
    Tired in Tacoma

    Dear Tired,

You’re right to be concerned about shutting down your computer at night—it’s a huge energy drain, otherwise. Leaving it on overnight once or twice isn’t a big deal, but over the course of several weeks and months it can have a significant impact on your electricity bill.

The good news: You’ve got lots of options for making sure your machine shuts down at night, even if you’ve already gone to bed. Windows, Mac OS X, and some Linux operating systems come with an auto-shut down feature baked right in, but there are plenty of free, feature-packed after market utilities you can try, so let’s start with those first.

Previously mentioned Smart Shutdown for Windows gives you lots of options before turning off your computer for the evening. Set it to complete certain tasks like emptying the Recycle Bin or close all your apps before turning off your machine, then decide how long you want your computer to be idle before Smart Shutdown leaps into action. If you’re a Mac user, then iWannaSleep will do the same thing for you. Linux users can turn to previously mentioned Auto Shutdown for Firefox.

Some apps you may already have on your computer do double duty—they’ll complete a task while you’re off doing other things and shut down your system when they’re done. Many popular BitTorrent apps, for instance, can do that for you, as can the computer maintenance app CCleaner.

Want to skip fancy software and just stick with your operating system’s native functionality for automatically shutting down your computer? Go for it! Mac users need to dip into System Preferences and set up the Energy Saver option to shut down the system at an appointed time. It’ll even wake it up again if you’d like.

The Spinning Donut has a great little tutorial on scheduling and automatic system shutdown on Windows XP and Vista. nixCraft explains how a couple of simple command line tweaks get the job done on your Linux box.

Still on the fence about whether you even need to shut down your computer every night? Read up on the subject and decide for yourself.

    Love,
    Lifehacker
