NEW CBD SET TO EMERGE IN WEST CHANGCHUN
    6 January 2010
    China Daily

Founded a year ago – on December 29, 2008 – the Western New Town Development Zone is among the newest commercial sites in Changchun.

Despite its fledgling status, the zone has already proved its appeal to financiers who are keen to invest in Changchun, the capital of the northeastern Jilin province, and one of the famous cultural cities in northeast Asia.

According to Wang Tingkai, head of the government of the Liuyuan district, the new complex benefits from being the proposed site for the Changchun Western Passenger Railway Station and from neighboring China’s largest automobile manufacturing base, the Changchun Automobile Industrial Park.

Work began on the new station in September and is scheduled for completion in 2011.

Wang said the new railway station will establish the zone as a major transportation hub within Jilin and will act as a gateway to the whole of northeast China. Once completed, the station will provide access to a number of high-speed lines linking Harbin and Dalian and Harbin and Beijing.

Once operational, it will take only four hours to travel between Changchun and Beijing, three hours between Changchun and Dalian and one hour between Changchun, Shenyang and Harbin.

The development zone is also adjacent to a number of well-known local businesses, including the First Auto Works, the largest automaker in China, the Dacheng Group, the largest corn processing enterprise in Asia and the fourth largest in world, the Haoyue Group, the nation’s largest beef processing company and the Changchun Railway Vehicles Co Ltd.

Wang said: "Such industrial giants will have a huge demand for ancillary businesses to provide equipment, spare parts and related services."

    The western CBD

Wang said that the development zone now has a detailed development plan in place, with the aim of ultimately establishing the zone as the western central business district (CBD) of Changchun.

Outlining its appeal, Wang said: "Highlighting the modern service industries and its excellent environment, the western CBD will be a suitable place for both business and residential purposes. With a number of business facilities, including office buildings, under construction, the zone will also be the ideal site for both international and local companies to establish their regional headquarters."

Changchun is located at the geographic center of northeast China. The Western New Town Development Zone is expected to make use of this geographical advantage to develop a business hub serving any company looking to access the potentially huge northeastern market.

With regard to environmental improvements, Wang said the zone is committed to investing in a major upgrade to its water resources, currently served by the Tongxin Lake, the Xinglong Lake and the Daliutun Reservoir. Plans are also in place to plant more trees and increase the grass coverage in parks and along the roadsides.

On the infrastructure front, the local government has earmarked funds for the construction of a new light railway, an enhanced subway network and major additions to the road network.

According to Wang, the zone will encompass a 13 sq km development stretching from the Western Third Ring Road in the east, the Western Fourth Ring Road in the west, Zili West Street in the south and the Haoyue Road to the north.

    Six functional areas

Wang said the zone will be composed of six functional areas – a transportation hub, a business area by the railway station, an office complex, an information industry area, a tourism center and a residential area.

The transportation hub will include the 220,000 sq m Changchun Western Passenger Railway Station and other access points, including roads, subways and light railways.

The business area will focus on finance, shopping, catering, entertainment and consultation sectors.

The office complex will be located on Jingyang Avenue, the east-west axis of both Changchun and the development zone. With facilities such as serviced offices, exhibition and convention venues and high-end hotels, this will be the core of the city’s CBD and an ideal site for any company’s regional headquarters.

The information industry area, also adjacent to the railway station, will highlight the design, research and development, exhibition, marketing and hi-tech products sectors.

The tourism zone, on the banks of the Xinglong Lake, will offer a number of leisure facilities, including bars, restaurants, museums and galleries.

A range of high-end residential facilities will be built near the Xinglong and Tongxin lakes, complete with a raft of service facilities, notably hospitals, schools and shops.

According to Wang, construction of the major infrastructure facilities in the zone will be completed within two years. As a number of multinationals and famous domestic companies establish their operations there, it is expected to achieve its full potential as a business and residential center within eight years.

  • New in the App Catalog for 07 January 2010

App CatalogSo yesterday might have been a big day at CES 2010 for Palm. We got the Palm Pre Plus and the Pixi Plus, and they’re going to be exclusive to Verizon. We got the Pre headed to SFR in France. We got Flash, a webOS App Gallery on PreCentral, video recording, and webOS 1.4. But what’s exciting, and what we get right now, is new apps. And those new apps come with 3D gaming, ala the iPhone. In fact, Palm’s new Plug-in Development Kit allows developers to make C and C++ apps that will work beautifully on webOS. As such, developers like EA, Gameloft, and Glu are here and showing off what that delicious hardware is really capable of. Curious what games are available? Well, while you’re waiting for the App Catalog to load, we recommend you hope right past the break and catch a glimpse for yourself of our daily list.

  • Hearst Is Ready to Show Off Its Skiff E-Reader Platform, But It Doesn’t Want to Tell Quite Yet. Is Anyone Ready to Buy? [MediaMemo]

    skiff

Here’s another e-reader clamoring for attention in a Consumer Electronics Show full of e-readers: The Skiff Reader, produced by a company funded by publisher Hearst Corp. and supported by Sprint.

I’d go into detail about the device that Skiff is producing, but the company won’t let me, because it isn’t providing many crucial details.

It won’t tell us when it will go on sale, for instance, or how much it will cost. Or which “major consumer electronics company” is actually manufacturing it. And while Skiff is happy to show off the device to the press, it won’t let any of us photograph it.

So trust me on this when I tell you that the Skiff Reader appears to look and work a lot like Amazon’s (AMZN) Kindle DX. At least from the brief glimpse I got.

But in many ways, the Skiff Reader’s specs are beside the point, because the real point of its parent company isn’t to produce e-reader devices at all.

Skiff will indeed sell a gadget, whose price will likely vary depending on how many publications consumers agree to subscribe to on said gadget. And Sprint  (S) will provide users with a built-in wireless connection to download periodicals.

But the driving idea behind the company is to create a platform for producing, distributing and selling magazines and newspapers, on a variety of devices.

In theory, at least, the publications that Hearst distributes and sells should work on any gadget, whether it’s a smartphone like Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone, one of the many tablets coming on the market, or even a rival e-reader like Amazon’s Kindle (AMZN). And Hearst doesn’t want to sell just its magazines and newspapers, but any publisher’s.

Does that sound familiar? It should, because that’s also the supposed goal of the “Hulu for magazines” consortium that Time Warner’s Time Inc (TWX) created last year. And Hearst is a member of that joint venture.

So. Either Hearst’s company is going to compete with the platform the JV is supposed to create, or the company will become part of the JV. Ask the various publishers in the group what they think will become of Skiff, and you’ll get confusing responses, all of which sound like a muttered version of “I don’t know.”

That said, it seems likely that someone–perhaps the consortium, or perhaps a consortium member like News Corp. (NWS), which also owns this Web site–will end up buying at least a piece of Skiff.

At a minimum, Hearst officials are fairly candid about being interested in finding someone else to invest in the company; I’ve been told the publisher has plowed some $35 million into it to date.

I asked Skiff president Gilbert Fuchsberg about that prospect, and he politely demurred, as he did when I asked him about other Skiff specifics. But he was polite and good-natured about it, as you can see in this video:

  • Yahoo’s Bradford and Pitaro Talk About Content Deal With Silverman’s Electus! [BoomTown]

As luck would have it, BoomTown was at a dinner at the Consumer Electronics Show where both Yahoo’s Jimmy Pitaro, who heads its Vertical Audiences Experience, and SVP of North American Revenue Joanne Bradford were also in attendance.

The pair played key roles in a deal Yahoo unveiled last night to partner with former NBC entertainment programming head Ben Silverman, in which his new Electus studio in Hollywood will create content for the Internet portal.

(Ironically, the party in Las Vegas was thrown by former ABC television exec and Yahoo exec Lloyd Braun, who also runs a similar multiplatform production company to Silverman’s.)

Thus, I took the opportunity to talk to both of them about the deal and what is means for Yahoo (YHOO), which is seeking to differentiate itself by stressing its strengths in premium content and advertising.

Yahoo and Electus are holding a press conference about the partnership this morning at CES.

  • 4 Dividend Stocks in the “Good” Category

Virtually everything in this world can be placed into a few basic categories.  This is especially true for Dividend Stocks when looking at their historic performance and expectations for the future. Consider these three broad categories: The Good: As you might guess, these are the dividend stocks that are doing exactly what they should do – consistently raising their dividends each year in spite of troubled economic times. The Bad: Companies that held their dividends flat.  The Ugly: Companies that cut their dividends.

Here are several companies in the “Good” category that recently rewarded their shareholders with increased cash distributions:

RPM International (RPM) makes specialty coatings and products for the structural waterproofing and corrosion control markets. January 5th the company increased its quarterly dividend 2.5% to $0.205/share. The dividend is payable on January 29, 2010 to stockholders of record as of January 15, 2010. The ex-dividend date is January 13, 2009. RPM is a Dividend Achiever and has raised its dividend for 37 consecutive years. The yield based on the new payout is 4.04%.

Calumet Specialty Products (CLMT) operates refineries in Louisiana and facilities in Pennsylvania and Texas with product distribution throughout North America. January 5th the company raised its quarterly distribution to $0.455/unit. The distribution is payable on February 12, 2010 to holders of record of such units at the close of business on February 2, 2010. ex-dividend date is January 29, 2009. The yield based on the new payout is 9.63%.

Robbins & Myers (RBN) supplies engineered equipment and systems for critical applications in global energy, industrial, chemical and pharmaceutical markets. January 5th the company bumped its quarterly dividend to $0.0425/share. The dividend is payable on February 19, 2010 to shareholders of record as of January 21, 2010. The yield based on the new payout is 0.72%.

Pentair (PNR) makes and markets water and fluid control devices, and electrical and electronic enclosures. January 7th the company increased its quarterly cash dividend 6% to $0.18/share. The the dividend is payable in the first quarter of 2010. PNR is a Dividend Achiever and has raised its dividend for 34 consecutive years. The yield based on the new payout is 2.26%.

Raising its dividend each year is the first step for a “Good” dividend stock to becoming a “Great” dividend stock. For a list of stocks with a long string of consecutive cash dividend increases, see this list.

Full Disclosure: No position in the aforementioned securities. See a list of all my income holdings here.

  • Lenovo IdeaCentre A300 and C310 hands-on

Given some of the more compact portables we’ve seen, world’s thinnest all-in-one desktop is certainly debatable, but the curves on the Lenovo IdeaCentre A300 do give it an air of grace, as does the swivel. Throw in a clear screen and it’s promising, but countering those kind words? Lots and lots of fingerprint-friendly gloss. We also got some time with the C310, which takes the traditional IdeaCentre all-in-one design and spruces it up a bit with a brown finish — it’s otherwise what you’ve come to expect, for better or for worse. Enough chit-chat, on with the photos!

Sure, it’ll do BD-Live and do two-source, two-zone audio distribution with 3 HDMI inputs and an optional iPod control dock, but you know you’re doing something wrong when you have to buy a separate amp to use the 7.1-channel analog outputs. Denon, you have made us shake our heads in confusion. Congratulations. In return we offer you this gift of PR after the break.

The actor, best known for his roles on Baywatch and Knight Rider, sat on the panel alongside Sharon Osbourne, and UK television personality Piers Morgan for four years before abruptly announcing his decision to pursue “his own TV show” in a statment issued Wednesday.

SIBM-B takes the ‘no-ragging’ rule to newer levels altogether. The number of notices announcing that it is an ‘anti-ragging campus’ and containing phone numbers of the wardens of the girls’ and the boys’ hostel whom one can complain to in case of an incident leave no ambiguity that it is almost a sin to rag in there. There is also a large poster categorizing the ‘actions’ that fall under ragging put up in the girls hostel indicating again the low-levels of tolerance the authorities had towards the act. The floors in the hostel are divided into senior and junior floors and during the first few weeks of the start of the session the seniors are not even allowed to enter the floors meant for the juniors. The girls’ hostel at SIBM-B incidentally, was also the quietest girls’ hostel I had ever been to. I was told by one of the inmates that because the students spent most of their day at the academic block and came back only after midnight (12:30 am is the in-time of the hostels), the hostels were generally not a place of a lot of activity.

As the college is in its early years (the first batch will graduate in 2010), informal clubs and committees are still being added to the institute setup and many new ones are coming up each day. The literary club that has been recently formed aims to spread the habit of reading and writing amongst students. The club’s main aim is to dissect the writing styles of various writers and understand both the superficial and in-depth meaning of their works. It also aims to improve the writing skills of its members and has adopted blogging, the latest and the most popular way of writing today. Each member has been asked to maintain a blog on which they can write anything that catches their fancy. These new bloggers will get help from the existing bloggers for improving their penmanship. The literary club looks quite determined to develop a writer in all MBA students at SIBM-B.

Two new phones were announced by LG today – the LG Lotus Elite and the LG Rumor Touch.

    LG Lotus Elite

First, the LG Lotus Elite.  Sure, it’s not dramatically different from the LG Lotus when it comes to design (still the box design that you either love or hate), but the LG Lotus Elite bumps it up to executive status with a 2.4-inch display (262,000 colors), support for up to 32 GB of external memory (Sprint’s not leaving you hanging, though – they offer a 2 GB microSD card in the box), and support for the usual Sprint products and services.  Expect the red version to launch on January 12th for $99 with a new two-year agreement, with a black version available four days later.

    LG Rumor Touch

Hot on the heels of the LG Lotus Elite, the LG Rumor Touch was announced.  Sporting a 3-inch touchscreen, 2.0-megapixel camera, EVDO Rev. 0, and a full QWERTY keyboard, it’s a nice little upgrade to the existing Rumor line.  Pricing is unknown, but expect the device to land at Sprint stores sometime in the quarter.

Think we would leave you hanging when it comes to video footage?  Absolutely not!  Be sure to check out Noah’s hands-on video of the LG Rumor Touch!
