  • LG X300 hands-on: thin, light, and handsome

Impressively thin and light, and that’s really all you need to know about LG’s X300. The touchpad and chiclet keyboards are comfortable, but what’s really gonna seal the deal is the as-of-yet unknown price tag. Direct your eyeballs this way, why don’t ya?

  • Netgear’s Push2TV wireless TV adapter gets official, decidedly Intel only

Netgear's Push2TV wireless TV adapter gets official, decidedly Intel only
Streaming content to your TV from a laptop is a wonderful thing, but doing it usually entails perching it precariously on your home entertainment center and fishing for that HDMI cable that’s inevitably fallen back behind your TV. No fun. Netgear’s Push2TV will get your video to the TV and keep your posterior on the couch, as predicted when it hit the FCC last week. The video signal is captured on the machine and then sent wirelessly to the device, which connects to your gear via HDMI or composite. Unfortunately we don’t know what kind of resolutions or audio signals will be supported yet, but it’s based on Intel’s WiDi technology, so that means a member of the 2010 Intel Core family will be required. Bought yourself a hot new lappy just before the tax year ended? You’re probably out of luck. We are too, if that makes you feel any better. PR after the break.

  • L5 iPhone IR dongle / remote software hands-on

Well, we just got a demo of the L5 Remote at ShowStoppers and we’re glad to report that the IR accessory for iPhone / iPod touch works exactly as promised. The IR signals are outputted by a small dongle that attaches to the dock connector of your device that works in conjunction with a free app from the company. During our first attempt at a demo, the software — which is still in BETA version — crashed, but the same can’t be said the second time around. Programming a new device is as easy as pointing any IR device at the receiver and pressing the buttons that the app dictates. Programming multiple rooms, changing button layouts, and managing multiple devices is a snap, though we wish you didn’t have to use the iPhone upside down to use it. According to reps on site, it should be shipping by the end of February, and once it does, you’ll never have to worry about losing a remote again.

  • Mad Catz Cyborg Rat hands-on: true customizable mouse madness

We’ve seen plenty of gaming mice with adjustable DPI and swappable weights, but the new Cyborg Rat lineup from Mad Catz is truly stunning. The mouse is adjustable in almost every dimension and angle, thanks to certain sliding aspects, some hex key-adjustable mechanisms and buttons galore (including a very useful aiming button for slowing down the cursor in those heated sniper moments). The real winner is the Rat 9, which is wireless and has a nifty little “home base” that continuously charges a hot-swappable replacement AA battery and keeps some extra weights warm as well, though with a $130 pricetag it’s not for the faint of heart.

Right in the middle of Samsung’s CES front garden were these gorgeous ultra-slim LED LCD TVs, dubbed the 9000 series and comes with a fancy remote controller which we saw earlier. Even with a pencil stuck to the side it’s hard to appreciate how thin it really is, so we’ve got you lovely peeps a video (including a pan scan of the booth front) and a couple more photos after the break. You’re welcome.

  • Vizio Lifestyle Headphones Annoy Everyone Else on the Subway [Headphones]

Vizio’s conceptual (but candidate for release) headphones have an LCD on both earpiece that can display a visualizer, album art, or picture of your cat, because the people around you really need to be subjected to that.

The headphones will be Bluetooth-enabled, so no cords muck up your affront to style. We don’t know anything like pricing or availability, since they’re still in the concept stage, but they’re totally functional and may well see release. [Vizio]

  • Hands-On: Slacker Radio for webOS

heard word from Kevin C Tofel of jkOnTheRun that Slacker Radio was coming to webOS, so I hustled on over there and got a demo. Good news: it’s almost completely baked and should be available within a month or so. Bad news: Slacker announced that they’d be offering offline access to music for a variety of platforms, but webOS isn’t going to be one of them at launch.

Still and all – it looks like a solid music stream app to me,

Confused? Here’s the score: Slacker is a music streaming service much like Pandora. However, Slacker offers a few benefits like curated genres, a much larger music library (nearly four times the size of the ‘leading competitor,’ they say), and a pro account you can pay for that will let give you even greater control over your music. I don’t want to say that Pandora has been getting a little stale in the music that it has been offering me lately ….but I just said it.

Those BlackBerry kids have been loving Slacker for some time now — soon webOS users will be able to join in the fun.

  • Album2 Hands On: A Media Viewer That Frees File Sharing From The Computer [Album2]

With a 7″ screen and a book-like form factor, the Album2 is well suited for sharing your digital files in a non-digital setting. It was satisfying to hold, simple to navigate and kept the emphasis on content.

Instead of audio, video, and images, the Album2 sorts your media in terms of the actions “Watch,” “Look,” and “Listen.” But it doesn’t seem like it’s dumbing things down as much as it is simplifying them: the Album2 achieves a delicate balance between being a technically competent media viewer and a device that lets people enjoy their digital content without worrying about the device displaying it.

You can throw pictures, video, or audio in all the common formats onto the Album2’s 4GB HD via USB or SD, or access content from Facebook, YouTube, Flickr and other big name sites via WiFi. The three simple buttons on the right side of the viewer were the only controls, and it’s hard for me to imagine anyone who couldn’t figure out the UI right away.

A leather cover attaches magnetically to the back of the Album2 and folds over as a stand, letting you rest the viewer on table like a digital photo frame. Whether standing on its own or being passed between friends, it’s nice to see a gadget that is focused on fostering physical interaction based on the digital media we collect.

The Album2 will be available in Q2 2010 with a pricetag of $199. [Album Life]

  • Texas Vs Alabama Live, Texas Vs Alabama Live Streaming 2010

Alabama will have its challenges slowing down the Longhorns trio of Jordan Shipley, D.J. Monroe and Marquise Goodwin. The three have combined for five return scores.

“I think special teams is important in every game, especially for us in the big games,” Shipley said. “A lot of the time it comes down to turnovers and special teams.”Now there is another Texas-Alabama game, this one for the national title, 45 years after Lammons and Namath became acquainted.

“Intercepted him twice,” Lammons noted early in a pleasant telephone interview Tuesday.

Lammons is traveling to this Bowl Championship Series game in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif., on Thursday night to root for his alma mater against Namath’s alma mater.

This championship game should only be as good as that game, which is remembered for the all-American quarterback, Namath, being stopped at the goal line by Tommy Nobis, the Texas all-American linebacker. That play is often referred to as the final play of the game, but in fact there were seven minutes left, and Namath threw four straight incompletions in a later flurry.

Lammons, who played linebacker and tight end that night, was lined up only a few yards away from the ball, as a defensive end on a goal-line formation.

“They made a few yards on the first down, then tried two quarterback sneaks but didn’t get in,” Lammons said. “Ninety-nine times out of a hundred, with a yard to go, you figured they’d try another sneak.”

Go to bet365 to get live scoring updates if you cannot watch the game on TV: bet365 –> In Play. You can also get updated odds during the game at that site.

The story of the game so far is that Colt McCoy left early with an injury and Texas have had to resort to their young freshman quarterback as a replacement. We’ll see if McCoy returns during the second half.

Go to bet365 to bet on NCAA football and NFL football.

  • Spaghetti Squash and Meatballs ~ A Family Favorite!

A lightened version of the Italian classic, this dish boasts much lower fat and carbs but still finds those comfort and enjoyment levels we are all seeking. Spaghetti squash is an oblong shaped hard winter squash with a mild, slightly sweet flavor. Combined with the fresh taste of a good marinara sauce, it is outstanding. Add my little turkey meatballs packed with garlic and herbs, kept moist with a touch of olive oil, and you have a complete and delicious meal that is absolutely divine. How else could you enjoy a wonderful plate of spaghetti and meatballs for dinner for a guilt free total of 13.9 grams of net carbs? I hope you enjoy.

    Spaghetti Squash and Meatballs

    Ingredients:

4 cups roasted spaghetti squash, yield from 2 to 2 1/4 lb. squash
1 1/4 lb. lean ground turkey
    1 large egg
    1/2 tsp. dried oregano
1 Tbsp. fresh basil, chopped (or 1 tsp. dried basil)
    2 Tbsp. fresh parsley, chopped
    3 cloves garlic, minced
2 1/2 Tbsp. Parmesan cheese, grated
    2 tsp. olive oil
2 cups Mario Batali Marinara Sauce (or other low carb sauce)
    salt and pepper
    vegetable spray

    Preheat oven to 400′

If the squash was not already cut when purchased then carefully make a lengthwise cut. Remove the seeds with a spoon and puncture the skin side a few times with knife to prevent bursting while cooking. Drizzle one teaspoon of the olive oil on the flesh and rub in. Season with salt and pepper if desired. Place cut side down on a sheet pan and roast until tender, about 45 to 50 minutes or until a knife can pierce the skin side and come out easily. Remove, cover with aluminum foil and set aside. This step can be done in advance if desired and the cooled squash stored in the refrigerator up to 3 days and you can have a weeknight dinner on the table in about 30 minutes.

    Reduce oven temperature to 350′

Place ground turkey in a large bowl and add all of the ingredients except the marinara sauce. Blend until well combined with a fork to keep it light and fluffy. Form meatballs that are about 1 1/2" in diameter. This should yield 24 meatballs. Lightly coat a sheet pan with vegetable spray and arrange meatballs on pan. Bake for about 15 to 20 minutes, taking care not to dry them out.

While the meatballs are baking shred the spaghetti squash with a fork by gently raking the fork from end to end. The fork will separate the strands of squash very easily. Warm the marinara sauce on medium low heat until hot and bubbly. To serve place 1 cup of spaghetti squash on each plate topped with 1/2 cup sauce and 6 meatballs.

  • Trent Richardson, Trent Richardson Alabama 2010

As good as Ingram is, Richardson might be even more explosive. And as his run demonstrated, when he breaks into the open, few people are going to catch him.

The best part for Alabama (and scary part for everybody else) is that the Ingram-Richardson duo is going to be around for a while.Freshman running back Trent Richardson is at times overlooked because he plays behind Heisman Trophy-winner Mark Ingram.

But after his 49-yard run for a touchdown, untouched up the middle of the field, he’ll have a moment that will be replayed over and over again. The Texas defensive players talked this week about his speed.

Richardson, out of Pensacola, Fla., rushed for 642 yards and six touchdowns this season.

He and Ingram celebrated together. They each have a TD tonight.

  • Open Thread: Should Tech Get a Turn-Off?

Being a technology blogger is like having a license for an around-the-clock gadget and Web addiction.

No one expects you to leave your house during the day. You’re allowed to spend the majority of your life in front of a glowing screen, and flipping out over WiFi issues is par for the course. And you’re never far from the Web, since your mobile is always in hand when you have to leave your laptop behind for some incomprehensible reason.

But even with such a license in hand, I have to make a case for periodically disconnecting. What do you think?

    Sponsor

More and more, I am trying to set aside unplugged hours and even days for Internet-free, mobile-free, “Luddite time.” Time for asking a stranger for directions, time for talking to the people you’re with rather than the people you “follow,” time for interacting with the world around you in ways that don’t include clicking, scrolling or downloading. Time that’s increasingly being destroyed by smart phones, “super” phones and what ever “super duper” devices are in the pipeline.

Sitting in front of these glowing screens (as most of us do) for around eight hours a day for work and additional hours for leisure can’t be good for us as living, breathing organisms. Have you ever spent the whole day absorbed in the web – the rabbit holes of YouTube, the breadcrumb trails of Wikipedia, the party line of Twitter and the bottomless virtual library of blog posts – to find yourself startled by actual human interaction, in a strange and unrestul intellectual state. With enough consecutive days of online-only living, you might realize you’re making more connections between online entities and content, but you’re losing opportunities to have fresh, original thought or observations about your own world.

I’m not saying that the Internet makes you stupid. I am saying that, if left to run wild across the vast territories of the Web, your mind can turn into a laboratory hamster, frantically pulling levers and running in wheels while his environment remains essentially static and his motivations essentially artificial.

Another detriment to a constantly wired life is that you’re not truly present with the folks around you every day, and you begin to forget how polite, normal people communicate. You become too easily distracted by notifications from your mobile, glazing over and tuning out to parse your RSS feeds while real conversations are going on without you. And being accustomed to ignoring your surroundings in favor of your online life numbs you to the fact that often, your friends are doing the same to you. If you’ve ever sat through a dinner with your significant other or a group of geek friends as you all happily tapped away on your mobiles, you know this is true. And while being able to buck conventional table manners and geek out together is a wonderful thing, aren’t you cheating yourself out of valuable face-to-face interaction by doing so?

And very often, an preoccupation with the Web leads to a total loss of perspective. If you have ever stayed awake until 2 or 3 in the morning entrenched in a furious debate on Scoble’s FriendFeed over something that the entire world had completely forgotten 12 hours later (guilty!), you have definitely lost perspective. Not typically the most empathetic people, we begin to give more attention and emotion to minor tech events (Google Wave, anyone?) than to major world events. If it didn’t trend on Twitter and hit Digg’s front page, we tend to not notice or care. Although the social web can occasionally be used as a power for good, notably through efforts such as those carried out during the Iranian election/debacle or on World Aids Day, this circle is notoriously self-obsessed and navel-gazing to the obfuscation of much more important matters.

Finally, being constantly online is probably fairly bad for your health. A few of the people I’ve spoken to tonight tell me that to distract themselves from Internet obsessions, they turn to physical activity, such as gym workouts, yoga or running. These dear souls are escaping the sedentary lifestyle to which we’ve all grown fairly accustomed and which most certainly has negative effects on how we look, how we feel, our metabolism and energy level and so much more. And although mobile and AR technologies are making it easier for us to get out and about while still connected, more often they act as a tether to larger, more stationary devices.

I personally want to spend many hours in 2010 offline and off my mobile. I want to do things like watch an old movie, go for a walk, have a dinner date or read an honest-to-god newspaper without checking in on Foursquare or posting an “overheard” on Twitter. Maybe it’s a sign that I’m aging. Many of my contemporaries say their sole offline time is sleeping. I’ve certainly lived that way, too, and I spend many days now online for 14-18 hours. But I don’t want every day to be like that.

What about you, dear readers? Do you currently plan for and enforce offline hours for yourself, your significant other or your family? If so, how and when do you take your breaks? Or are you a tireless defender of the Internet junkie lifestyle?

Most importantly, what do you see as the explicit benefits or detriments of being online around the clock – or of taking periodic furloughs?

Let us know your opinions and best practices in the comments.
