  • LG GW990 hands-on video

You’ll know this device as the 4.8-inch revolutionary intent on making us fall madly in love with MIDs all over again (or should that be for the first time?). Good thing then that we now know it as the device that bears a thousand Engadget fingerprints. The Moorestown-powered GW990 from LG has finally become official and we have to say it is exactly the huge slab you might imagine it to be. In terms of specs, it comes with 16GB of built in flash memory and 512MB RAM, and 720p output is possible if the 1020 x 480 screen resolution isn’t enough for you. Chunky, sturdy and curved in all the right places, it’s an appealing device even if it suffers from a bit of an identity crisis. Powered by Moblin and primarily marketed as a 3G device, we were told by LG that — behind the 1,850mAh battery and alongside the MicroSD expansion slot — your SIM can make a home, and some such AT&T appendages have already been spotted inside this… smartphone? The UI at present is just a standard S-class layered on top of Moblin, giving us no cause for excitement, but we were reassured that LG will be offering many other OS options when the device shows up in the second half of this year. Anyhow, enough blabbering from us, check out the gallery below and don’t forget the vid after the break.

  • Josh Groban National Anthem 2010 Live

America the Beautiful was sun first, a tradition since 9/11. As Colt McCoy stood waiting in hopes of winning his fourth bowl game.

The Longhorns took the field carrying the American and Texas flags. Alabama followed reminded of the 1980 US hockey team.

Groban took the field with the excitment only a championship game could provide. Amazing anthem complete wth guitar, drums, and an amazing vocal performance. Fireworks didn’t provide the excitement of the eagle but it was great. Loved that green guitar and the riff it played. It was completed by the flyover.
Texas, meanwhile, has a quarterback named Colt. I mean, how great is that? It would be like having a USC quarterback named Palm Tree or Tinsel.

I like Texas’ Mack Brown, all the way back to his days as the boy wonder coach at Tulane. Back then, he still had the same moppish Paul McCartney hair, except it was brown, not laced with ivory. He was the next big thing back then. Believe me, if you can take Tulane to a bowl game, as he did, you can do almost anything.

His counterpart at Alabama is this Nick Saban, who seems to leave hurt feelings behind everywhere he goes. Such is the legacy of the modern coach, I suppose, yet few inspire such vitriol as Saban. Baby, were you born to run?

Both programs are more similar than different. For instance, I’ve spent a couple of days braving the mean streets of Old Pasadena, trying to engage fans of these schools in a decent conversation.

  • New Year’s resolution: Have more sex

Yoga instructor Sadie Nardini and her husband got an early start on their New Year’s resolution: In December, the New York couple decided to have sex every day for the entire month.

Nardini and her husband, a professional photographer, initially decided to have sex like bunnies in the hopes that all the activity might help them overcome his-and-her bad habits: cigarettes and chocolate, respectively. And indeed, the nightly trysts did help. But they also found, unexpectedly, that frequent sex made them feel better in other ways, too.

Nardini says they both slept better and had more energy, and she didn’t get a cold or the flu all month as she usually does in the winter. “Sex doesn’t seem at first glance to be the cure for what ails you, but there’s so many health benefits of having more sex,” Nardini says. “Anyone can be better served by having more sex.”

In fact, the experiment was so successful, the couple plans to have daily sex in January, too.

Researchers have long known that not only is sex fun (when done with the right person, of course), but that people who have frequent sex tend to live longer and have healthier hearts and lower rates of certain cancers. These studies also show that men with an active sex life have healthier sperm, and sexually active women have fewer menopause symptoms. Read more…

  • Slacker Radio Announces Addition of ABC News

Everyone’s favorite Slacker is at it again.  Slacker Radio announced last night that it is partnering up with ABC News to “provide listeners with updated news from one of the nation’s most trusted sources.”  This is good news for Android users as Slacker launched their app on the Android Market last November.

Users of Slacker Radio will have access to ABC news some time in early 2010.  This ABC news content will be available for all, with free membership users having a trial period to experience the content whereas Slacker Plus subscribers will have full access at launch.

This means that all your ABC News favorites like Diane Sawyer and George Stephanopoulos are going to be available to listen to, giving you news and analysis of breaking issues around the country and the world.  Good Morning America and Nightline are also going to get into the mix with some segments that will be available for users to listen to.

A Slacker Radio Plus subscription can be had for as low as $3.99 a month, and with ABC being added in, it does increase the value of a plus membership.  If you are a newsaholic that likes to have all forms of media hitting you with the latest news, take a look at what Slacker is offering here.

ABC News is even going to allow users to skip segments like they would songs, to allow them to personalize their experience by tailoring what they want to hear about.

This could be seen as a big step forward for Internet based radio, having a major news conglomerate integrate with a service like Slacker shows that people are taking notice that end users LIKE using services like Slacker and Pandora to get their content.

If you have not downloaded the slacker app for your Android phone, here is the barcode, give it a try!

  • Time to ban mountaintop mining due to externalized costs

A new, comprehensive analysis of mountaintop removal mining, which is common in the Appalachian region of the United States, shows that its environmental effects extend to the hydrology of its surroundings, ruining streams and the ecosystems they support. Technically known as “mountaintop mining with valley fills” (MTM/VF), it consists of stripping away forests and topsoil from the tops of mountains and then using explosives to break through rocks that cover the coal inside the mountain. The resulting rocks are then pushed away into valleys, where they interfere with and often bury existing streams.

It’s not all that surprising that clean water, and a lot of it, is important to ecosystems; research shows that if these activities disrupt as little as 5-10 percent of a watershed’s area, they can cause irreversible changes to the ecosystem. The reduced flow of streams that get buried by valley fills can kill off plants and trees in an area with high biodiversity. This loss of flora also results in a landscape that is less effective at handling runoff water, leading to an increase in the frequency and magnitude of downstream flooding.

Streams that continue to flow are polluted with various chemicals and metals from the mountaintop rocks. Increases in sulfate cause stream microbes to create more hydrogen sulfide, which is toxic to many aquatic plants and organisms. Selenium accumulation causes deformities and lethality in fish, which in turn poison the birds that eat them. Humans in the area are also affected by the dirty streams and the elevated levels of airborne, hazardous dust that results from mining. Studies have found elevated levels of hospitalization for pulmonary disorders and hypertension, as well as increased mortality in the region.

Reclamation of the areas appears to be ineffective, with soils still having low organic and nutrient content and little to no regrowth of woody vegetation afterward. Reclamation often involves rebuilding streams, but the new ones carry chemicals released by the rock debris, and don’t integrate into the radically altered environment.

The sum of these problems add significantly to the externalized costs of coal use for power generation. Because of the huge impact, the scientists behind the report are recommending that the government stops issuing MTV/VF permits until new methods to address these problems can be developed and subjected to rigorous review.

  • Toddler Sucks On a USB Cable, Ends Up in the Hospital [Tragedy]

Here’s a sad reminder that USB cables belong plugged into peripherals, not children. Toddler Trinity Anderson was playing with a USB cable plugged into a laptop and put it in her mouth, which shocked her and knocked her out.

Trinity remains at Children’s Hospital with third-degree burns on her tongue, palate and lips. She is on sedatives and paralyzing drugs to prevent her from moving and disturbing her breathing tube, Jeffrey Anderson said. She needs the tube because her tongue is so swollen it blocks her airway.

Anderson said he feels helpless as he watches his granddaughter in her hospital bed.

“I want to make it better and there’s nothing I can do,” he said.

Anderson said doctors plan to allow Trinity to regain consciousness in the next day or two to assess how much neurological damage occurred. The little girl wasn’t breathing for several minutes, and her heart nearly stopped beating.

Anderson said doctors expect Trinity to recover from her burns, though she may have lasting cosmetic damage. Right now, the family’s main concern is that the happy, laughing little girl does not suffer serious brain damage, and they hope she is young enough that she can recover any lost capabilities.

This was clearly a freak accident, but it’s a good reminder that while these cables and gadgets we use are now commonplace, everyday items, they still carry a current and should be treated with care. Here’s hoping Trinity makes a full recovery. [Colorado Daily]

    About Green Light Products

Being environmentally conscious is no longer a fad: the demand for high performance environmentally positive packaging materials is one of the fastest growing sectors of the packaging industry. Green Light Products Ltd is at the forefront of this sector, bringing market leading products to companies that are more aware, and are genuinely concerned about the effects their buying habits are having on their environment.

In the past, the term ‘green’ was often associated with ‘faddy’ companies, manufacturing products that were high-priced and lacking the quality or performance of traditional products. Through massive investment in R&D Green Light Products has continued to develop a range of biodegradable ‘in the box’ packaging products that not only exceed the performance of traditional materials but also offer significant cost savings.

“We are committed not only to selling products that offer a significantly better environmental performance than other products in the same market, but also to ensure that customers are not paying a premium for choosing the more responsible solution.” – Karl Yeo MD

Green Light is the leading supplier of biodegradable packaging in the UK and is also a major exporter.

Since its formation over 14 years ago, the company has developed a series of new and unique products which have been in increasing demand with environmentally-aware customers across Europe and as far afield as Australia – where, through a licensing deal, their biodegradable packaging products are also market leading.

Green Light actively promotes the use of sustainable raw materials and energy efficient manufacturing processes to produce renewable, recyclable and biodegradable packaging materials.

Our products are manufactured at a brand new purpose built factory in Cardiff. Through our national distribution network and UK-wide customer support centres, we are able to meet the most testing demands in a convenient and efficient manner.

  • NEW HIGH CAPACITY SPIRALS FROM RYSON

The new High Capacity Spirals are in response to our customers need for taller units and to handle heavier loads. Both are factors which increase the total weight present in the spiral at any given time. The new spirals can start and stop fully loaded and handle double the total weight compared to our regular spirals.

Ryson Spiral conveyors need less floor space than conventional conveyors and are faster and more reliable than any elevator or lift.

The load capacity is 75 lbs. per linear foot of conveyor for speeds up to 200 FPM. The angle of incline is between 9 and 11 degrees which safeguards against loads sliding or tumbling during operation.

Only one drive motor is needed, equating to substantial savings in controls and systems integration. Most spirals are shipped in one piece, pre-assembled and pre-tested, thereby drastically reducing time and cost of installation.

All Ryson Spirals are of the chain slat type and incorporate a unique proprietary low friction design which facilitates high speed, low noise, smooth operation and long life.

An innovative modular design allows Ryson to customize with ease and modify in the field to accommodate emerging needs.

Ryson specializes in vertical conveying solutions and is the number one manufacturer of spiral conveyors in the USA. Our products include Spiral Conveyors, Spiral Curves, Mass Flow Spirals, Vertical Accumulation Buffers, Bucket Elevators, Incline and Decline Slat Conveyors. • A compact PAC simplifies the control of process machines

Manufacturers active in sectors such as industrial refrigeration, food and beverage or in the realization of machines such as boilers, furnaces, autoclaves and extruders, need control systems including PID control of process loops, set point programming, sequence control of pumps and valves commands, logics, alarms

The Programmable Automation Controller includes all the above-mentioned functionalities into its design. The use of a PAC allows machine manufacturers to avoid to select, buy and connect different equipment such as I/O modules, PLCs, single loop or multi loop controllers, network adaptors

Based on many years of successful production of control and automation products for the process and manufacturing industries, Ascon is now changing the future of the control of machines and medium size plants with an entirely new and innovative compact controller called Sigma microPAC that simplifies the control issue

Sigma microPAC is a small but powerful programmable automation controller with on-board I/Os and a capability of up to 12 Analogue I/Os plus 80 Digital I/Os. The CPU is 32 bit ARM with 4 MB flash memory, 16MB RAM memory and 64KB retentive memory

Sigma microPAC adds advanced PID loop control with easy and quick management of logic control
Programming uses the six languages, IEC 61131-3 compliant software aided by the Ascon’s libraries with a large selection of function blocks, templates and multitasking functions

The use of standard communications protocols allows an easy integration with remote control/assistance devices
An Ethernet port with Modbus TCP protocol is available for connection to HMIs and SCADAs for configuration, programming and supervision. One RS485 plus one RS485/RS232 ports are available with Modbus RTU protocol (master/slave) and ASCII for further expansions, for connection to WEB SCADAs and to GSM/GPRS/UMTS modems

Advantages of Sigma microPAC include the capability to offer functionalities normally available only in more complex and expensive systems such as PLCs and PC based systems. Extra components, required by PLCs to do the job, can be eliminated, panel dimensions, costs of hardware and software development, integration can be reduced

Most typical applications solved are preservation cells, heating stations, industrial boilers, kilns and painting booths. Here the control of variables such as temperature, humidity, pressure and flow, has an essential role to obtain the best performance of the machine
