  • The new CK series rotating union has done an excellent job!

For many years, the CK rotating unions have been well-known as real “workhorse” for conveyance of heat transfer oil in the paper industry – in particular in the hot and high vibration work environment of calenders.
Regarding the fact that machine speed and pressure will continue to rise in future, DEUBLIN engineers started to redesign and upgrade the CK some time ago.
Accordingly, all bearing parts were adapted not only to operate at the familiar temperatures of 230°C, but also with pressures up to 6 bar and speed up to 1,000 revolutions per minute (relating to 4″ model).
In this enhancement the subject of lubrication/relubrication was also taken into account so that the models of the new CK series now feature almost maintenance-free operation.
It is now by design, that the new bearings are lubricated by the media and do not need relubrication using high-temperature bearing grease. This feature of the new CK is also called “life-time lubrication” and is an additional benefit which provides for early pay-off of the new CK and has a positive effect on the total cost of ownership (TCO).
The new CK is available with inner diameters ranging from 4″ to 7″ and still does not need any external cooling system.
The new CK series has been installed in numerous calenders across Europe, Asia and America, and it has proven to be a successful solution for every installed application.
When considering the TCO and not the product “rotating union” itself, the supplementary services rendered by a renown supplier such as DEUBLIN become the focus of attention.
In this respect, it can be noticed that the entire drying section of a paper machine often features a great potential for performance increase and/or cost reduction.
For this purpose, DEUBLIN examines this machine segment and develops an optimization concept for the steam and condensation system including rotating unions, suitable siphon systems, and turbulence bars which considerably improve the heat transfer.
This consulting service provides several benefits: The paper machines are fit for the future and the energy input is reduced which immediately results in lower costs and reduced CO2 emissions.
Experience gained in this respect and information on many other relevant aspects of the paper machine can be exchanged again at the “Paper Drying Seminar” from 27th to 29th April 2010 in Hofheim-Wallau, presented by DEUBLIN Germany. To attend the seminar please contact: phone +49 6122 8002-800, fax +49 6122 8002-805.

  • Hands-on with the Plastic Logic Que

    que

And we have another ebook reader! This time around it’s the Que from Plastic Logic. Just because it’s not the Kindle or Nook, don’t write it off. This device, and the software it runs, might be special enough to make a mark in the ebook reader scene.

It’s not the hardware that’s unique — although it is nice and I’ll get to that in a bit — it’s the software that formats publications to the device while retaining the feel of the print version. Watch the video above to see a demo of USA Today. You’ll see that it looks and feels like the real thing. Headlines are up top along with buttons to different sections. It even embeds the news story’s image in a familiar fashion.

As for the hardware, it’s damn thin — like so thin breakage might be a concern. But the screen size is large enough that reading a newspaper or magazine article feels right. The USB port, SD card slot, and speaker are located on the bottom and are the only ports on the otherwise sleek device.

There is a bit of lag when navigating. Actually, it’s more than a bit, but that’s the norm in ebook readers right now. They are laggy, but that will likely improve.

Plastic Logic is targeting an April release with Barnes & Noble as the retail partner. The 4GB version will run $649 while the 8GB version with 3G will cost $799. Yeah, ouch.

  • How Chris Messina Got a Job at Google

Chris Messina grew up in New Hampshire, the Live Free or Die state. As a high-schooler in the early 90’s he held his school’s website hostage after being suspended for running an ad on it for a controversial gay rights group. Now Chris is nearing 30, today was his 29th birthday, and he just announced that he’s taken a job at one of the biggest, most powerful corporations in the world.

The latest chapter in the fascinating story of Chris Messina’s life ends with one of the most high-profile young proponents of an Open and Distributed Web joining Google, a company that aims to organize all the information in the world and a behemoth that many free spirits online eye with ambivalence. What will the future bring for Messina and his work? A look at how he got to Google might offer some clues. It isn’t all pretty, some people worry about what the move will mean for the web, but the announcement is definitely important for all of us.

    Where Chris Messina Comes From

Chris Messina grew up in a well-to-do suburb in New Hampshire. As a teenager he railed vocally against a middle class culture that he says he now realizes he was very much a part of. One of his biggest influences, though, was a grandmother with strong Libertarian tendencies.

When Chris entered high school, the web was in its earliest days. He became the school’s web master, setting up and running its first web site. A group of students at the school wanted to start a Gay/Straight Alliance support group and were facing some resistance from parents and school officials. Messina took it upon himself to post a free banner ad promoting the organization on the school’s official web site. He got suspended from school and pulled the site down in protest. (Even in those early days a school librarian had backed up some of the files, so the situation ended without young Messina being paddled or tied to the rack.)

After high school Chris went to college at Carnegie Mellon, where he studied Design. That Design training took him far in the tech world and will be an important part of his new job.

After graduating from college, Messina went on to build an incredible resume of accomplishments recognized around the world.

    • He designed the full-page ad in the New York Times announcing the launch of Firefox. Thousands of people donated $10 each to buy that ad, heralding an Open Source, community-based challenge to Microsoft’s Internet Explorer.
    • He co-founded BarCamp, the now international network of technology and culture “unconferences” that you may have heard of and should definitely attend next time there’s one in your town.
    • He was integral in the building of the international co-working community, a network of organizations that help each other serve independent, web-based workers who seek a physical space and support infrastructure.
    • He is a Board member of the OpenID Foundation, the organization working on standards and adoption of open, federated and portable systems of identity for use around the web.
    • He’s a leading voice in the movement to create an Activity Streams standard that will allow user activity data to be shared and understood from one website over to another.

When Messina speaks about any of the above, the biggest companies on the web listen. He’s widely respected, but some people say he’s become an arrogant power player at the front of a small parade of outspoken self-appointed leaders. That he gets all the credit when there are other, quieter, people doing a significant portion of the work. That’s one perspective, but it’s not the most common one and many of the leaders of the circle Messina runs in have shipped products that power the fundamentals of the web we all use today.

Now Chris Messina will be at one of the biggest and most important companies around. Today on his 29th birthday, Messina announced he was taking a job at Google, with the title Open Web Advocate.

Has Chris Messina sold out? “There are many legitimate reasons to work for a larger enterprise,” social web sociologist danah boyd, who recently joined Microsoft, told us in response to Chris’s move. “Some are practical: health insurance, stable income, and all of the other benefits that tend to come with such a package. But some come from the same ethos that entrepreneurs have… the desire to ship a product. Where you don’t have to do every inch of legwork. And where you know that your work can touch millions. There’s also something to be said for being around a whole lot of really smart people.”

    On Landing at Google

Messina has worked at a wide variety of startup companies. Most recently he was at OpenID provider Vidoop, one of a number of high profile hires the company made while it was still based in Oklahoma. In September 2008, Vidoop put its 40 person crew in a crazy caravan to its new headquarters in Portland, Oregon. In May, 2009 the company imploded, closed its doors and told some of its employees it couldn’t pay back wages. Messina shared his account of what happened on his blog.

The next half year Messina spent doing independent consulting, including a month and a half project with Mozilla. The fruits of that labor will be released to the public soon, he told us today.

In September Messina was making the rounds, talking to a variety of companies in Silicon Valley and told a friend at Google that he was considering joining a big company as his next step. His Google contact told him that the company had a strong preference for hiring engineers, rather than people with the skills that Messina has. Doug Bowman, Google’s first ever staff designer had made a high-profile departure to join Twitter just a few months prior, saying that Google didn’t appreciate design.

Messina left feeling like that door was closed and considered launching his own startup company. Over the next few months a few other companies offered Messina positions, he said, but then his old Google contact pinged him again and asked if he was still interested in joining Google.

What had changed? His contact told him that Google was placing a new emphasis on getting the social web right, in a way that is good for the web. That month Google publicly launched a campaign that had run informally inside the company for two years, called the Data Liberation Front. It works across departments to enable users to remove their data from Google services, a key part of the vision of an Open Distributed Web that Messina has been working toward.

“I went in for the interview,” Messina told us today, “and 2 weeks later they made me a great offer letting me do what I was already doing. Yes, the interview process was long but very efficient, and I had to complete 1 logic problem (which I almost nailed, but alas, I’m no Joe Smarr!)” Smarr is the widely respected developer that had been working on these same matters at Comcast Plaxo until announcing that he was joining Google in December.

Messina told us that he’s excited to learn how to organize for an Open web from inside a very large company. It’s a perspective he’s never had before, but one that will lend him more credibility in his efforts to move other large companies.

What This Means for the Web

Messina and Smarr join a growing and impressive roster of Googlers dedicated to building an Open, Distributed web. That’s a vision that’s the opposite of a centralization and control – the typical model of financial success for a large company. This team of people will have to battle inertia, corporate interests and the natural tendency many people say is inherent in a large organization to bring more and more of a market under its control.

Google controls a growing size of our search, our advertising sales, our email, our document collaboration, our mapping, our voice communication and much more online. The company is almost sure to face anti-trust legal pressure someday soon.

It’s always been a part of Google’s DNA to support what’s good for the web at large, the more people use the web the more they’ll click on AdSense. This much centralization of power is cause for concern, though. Its as if Google is set to have a battle against itself. It’s staff against the nature of its economy of scale.

The culture of the corporation may be more important than its size, though. David Recordon, an open web advocate that works closely with Messina who recently joined social networking giant Facebook, had this to say: “Personally, I love how Facebook’s culture lets me continue working on what I’m passionate about while having a tremendous impact on both the technology industry and the world at large. I hope that as my friend, Chris is able to do the same at Google.”

The day to day reality of effecting change may be more complex than that, though. Yahoo’s Eran Hammer-Lahav, the best-known technologist working to develop and support open login standard OAuth, raises an important concern.

“This is clearly a big win for Google,” he told us. “Messina and Smarr are huge assets in the social web space.”

“My concern is specific to Google. With Messina, Smarr, [inventor of OpenID and more Brad] Fitzpatrick and others all working for Google, focusing on the Social Web, there is less and less incentive for Google to reach out. Google has a strong coding culture which puts running code ahead of consensus and collaboration. Now with so many bright minds in house, they are even less likely to reach out.

“A week ago, you would have to get at least Google, Plaxo, and Messina (representing the independent voice) to collaborate. This week it’s just Google.

“While I am certain that Messina and Smarr will keep their independent voices, and am not suggesting they will ’sell out’ or alter their principles, they no longer need to surface many of their ideas out to the community. They can just have an quick internal meeting and ship products.”

What will going to Google mean for the rebellious young man who’s become such a big personality agitating for the open web outside of the biggest companies on the web? What does it mean that the biggest companies, especially Google and Facebook, keep hiring outside social web technical leaders? Time will tell, but Messina says he’s been told explicitly that people for whom “it’s all about them” don’t do well at Google.

The company must be full of formerly big personalities now working as part of a team. PubSubHubbub co-creator and now Googler Brett Slatkin once as a brash college freshman told Newsweek that “If I made a great product, and Microsoft offered me a lot of money, I would spit in their faces.” (That’s one of my favorite quotes.) Now Slatkin has toned it down and talks tech without the bombast.

Messina says he knows it’s going to be a big change and is excited to see what being part of Google is like. So the next chapter of the story of Chris Messina will be a part of the next chapter of the story of Google.

  • Are You Hiring the Right People at the Right Time?

hirshland_face_jan10.jpgThe most important component of a startup is the team. Not only do you need to hire the right people for the job, you also have to hire them at the right time. Polaris Venture Partners’ Mike Hirshland wrote a great post entitled, How to Kill a Startup: Hire Executives instead of Entrepreneurs. After investing in companies like Automattic and Quantcast Hirshland believes that companies go through a distinct life cycle and often the right people for the job change over time.

    Sponsor

clock_post_jan10.jpgSays Hirshland, “One of the hardest things about building a startup organization is that a successful startup is effectively 2 or 3 radically different companies between founding and achieving substantial commercial value.  And the people who will be great at one of those different stages often will be pretty lousy at the other stages.”

Hirshland goes on to talk about VC’s pressuring founders into taking on senior executive at the wrong phase of the business. He believes that early-stage startups must be led by entrepreneurial (and flexible) individuals while later stage companies should be run by executives who understand how to scale and build better infrastructure.

We’ve seen our fair share of founders pushed out of companies to make way for more seasoned executives. While it’s tough for boards to make those decisions, in some cases the transition of leadership is the right thing to do to build a better company. While Hirshland applies his post to senior executive, the same mentality can also be applied to other members of staff. How do you know if you’ve got the right staff for the right time? If you’ve got a marketing director pitching an unfinished site, a Biz Dev guy without a business plan or a new VP of engineering whose 2 employees keep hiding his index cards, then you’ve probably jumped the gun.

For more from Hirshland check out his blog at vcmike.wordpress.com.

  • Hook Em Horns, Hook Em Horns Sign

Over the holiday break, I watched the 2006 Rose Bowl game on DVD. Twice. It was both one of the worst officiated games ever, and one of the sloppiest from our offensive end. Lots of dumb turnovers, lots of really stupid defensive miscues, even a missed extra-point! We scratched out the historic victory in 2006 because of Vince Young…but Colt McCoy doesn’t have to be Vince Young tonight to win. In fact, here’s all I think we have to do to win tonight:
    # We need to play turnover-free ball — or as close to that as possible. Momentum always shifts with turnovers, but even more so in title games. Taking care of the ball is crucial, and I think — given that the Longhorns are much more relaxed and loose than Saban’s team — we will have a chance to do that tonight. But that’s where we get to the old saying about the most important piece of real estate in sports rests between the ears.

    # Defense, defense, defense. Even in one of our worst offensive performances ever — we never should have beat Nebraska — we still won, and it was because of our defense. We were able to overcome turnovers and all the mistakes in the 2006 title game because of our defense. Alabama and Texas have the top two defenses in the country. Our last trip to the Rose Bowl was an offensive shootout. I bet this year, it’s a defensive battle. More boring, yes, but also a game in which we can stay competitive.

  • ShareGrove taps into private conversations with new beta

Picture 47ShareGrove, a San Mateo-startup that aims to deepen online social interaction between close friends, just launched a new beta for private group conversations and sharing on the web.

The company retooled its user interface from the last time we saw it at the DEMO conference last fall. ShareGrove has pared down the look and feel of the site — to me, it resembles a private room in FriendFeed. “We ended up with a simpler experience, while still preserving the core functions of private, rich and real-time online conversation,” said co-founder Kent Libbey.

The premise of ShareGrove is that there should be a private real-time space where a small group of friends or colleagues can interact. It uses Facebook Connect to bring a person’s closest friends into a space that’s a hybrid between e-mail, a Facebook wall and group chat. So if you’re not quite comfortable with Facebook’s new privacy scheme or if you want to have an in-depth conversation with a couple friends, this could be a solution.

ShareGrove immediately updates the page whenever a member of the group posts an item. It has rich embedding options that let you post videos, links, maps and files. It can also automatically find images to attach, so if you type in the name of a book on Amazon, that will appear in a left-hand column as an object that you can drag and drop into the comment.

There are number of startups that already address private conversations and sharing. Although its mainly known as a short-form blogging platform, Tumblr recently launched private, password-protected blogs. With commenting and likes, it could be used in a similar way. Drop.io also offers private file-sharing and collaboration services. Facebook, of course, gives users the opportunity to share items with as few or as many friends as a person wants, but it’s better designed for lightweight interaction.

ShareGrove is seed funded by Elm Street Ventures.

  • Vizio’s New Soundbars Are All About Dolby Digital and Wireless Accessories [Home]

Vizio’s new batch of soundbars come in varying degrees of 2.0, 2.1 and 5.1 arrangements, with all of them supporting Dolby Digital surround sound. Also appealing is the army of wireless headphones, iPod docks and speakers offered up.

The VHT512 is Vizio’s flagship 5.1 soundbar with fully wireless connections, including a 2.4 GHz wireless sub and two rear speakers that plug into the bassmaker. four 3″ mids provide the primary sound for the sound bar, while each rear speaker has a 2″ driver. There’s also a wireless iPod dock that can be placed anywhere within a 60-foot radius of the speaker and still cleanly transmit audio. The VHT512 will be available in May for $400.

The VSB200 and -210ws Soundbars provide 2.0 and 2.1 sound with virtual Dolby surround and in the case of the 210ws, a wireless subwoofer. Like the 512, this bar is also powered by four 3″ mid speakers. Both the VSB200 and VSB210ws will be available in January for $200 and $350, respectively.

Lastly there’s the VHT200 and -212 soundbars, which are similar to the VSB line, except theyre only 32″ wide (as opposed to 40″) to accommodate smaller televisions. But not sacrificing much in the way of specs, these have the same speaker guts as its larger counterpart, and the VHT212 has a slightly smaller, wireless sub. The VHT200 and VHT212 will be available in April for $150 and $250, respectively.

And lastly, there are the wireless headphones, which also come with the wireless iPod dock, allowing you to have sound piped into your ears anywhere in the house, without the hassle of wires. It has a five hour battery and charged via USB. Only problem? They’re $300. [Vizio]
