  • Caring for a Pregnant Dog

I just bred my dog and am wondering if while she is pregnant I should feed her anything special or get her vitamins. I want her to have a healthy pregnancy and healthy puppies. Is there anything you might wanna suggest for her? Thanks JC, Michigan

    Dear JC,

The average length of pregnancy in dogs is 63 days or about 9 weeks. During the first six weeks of pregnancy, experts recommend continuing to feed her usual high-quality maintenance diet. By high-quality, I mean a meat-based commercial kibble for adult dogs or a home cooked diet that is complete and balanced. While a multi-vitamin/mineral supplement may not be necessary if she’s fed a premium diet, a small amount of fresh fruits and lightly cooked vegetables can be a healthy addition to any dogs’ diet. Omega 3 fatty acids from fish oil  provide additional health benefits.

The pups grow the most during the last trimester, or three weeks, of pregnancy, so that’s when your dog will need extra calories, protein and minerals, like calcium. Gradually increase her daily food intake so that by her due date, she’s eating three times the amount she was before pregnancy. By increasing the amount of food she eats each day, she’ll not only be getting additional calories, she’ll also be taking in the additional protein, calcium and other nutrients the pups need to develop properly.

If you find that your dog simply can’t eat this much food, she’s losing weight, or you’re concerned that she won’t be able to keep up with the pups’ demand for milk, gradually switch her over to a food specially made for the pregnancy/lactation lifestage. Generally the same as puppy formula, this food concentrates calories, protein and calcium so your dog doesn’t have to eat as much to get the same nutrition.

BlackAmericaWeb.com reported that more than 255,000 children are served by Big Brothers Big Sisters’ donor-funded program. However, Black boys comprise a disproportionate number of those waiting to be matched with mentors in nearly 400 agencies around the nation.

The fraternities’ leaders have agreed to use their social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace and Twitter, to encourage men to visit Big Brothers Big Sisters’ Web site and donate or volunteer.
But the neighborhood is in the midst of a profound and accelerating shift. In greater Harlem, which runs river to river, and from East 96th Street and West 106th Street to West 155th Street, blacks are no longer a majority of the population — a shift that actually occurred a decade ago, but was largely overlooked.

By 2008, their share had declined to 4 in 10 residents. Since 2000, central Harlem’s population has grown more than in any other decade since the 1940s, to 126,000 from 109,000, but its black population — about 77,000 in central Harlem and about twice that in greater Harlem — is smaller than at any time since the 1920s.

Why can’t automated answering services at mortgage companies be more like the one at Nestle Crunch’s Hotline at 800-295-0051? When asked if you want to continue in English or Spanish, just wait for about 10 seconds, listen to the options and press “4”. Listen to the options again, and then press “7”. (It is worth trying a few times if the line is busy.)
    “I know what you’re thinkin’
    We were goin’ down.
    I can feel the sinkin’
    But then I came around.”
What do the Foo Fighters know about mortgage banking? Maybe not much. But bond prices have certainly moved higher (and interest rates lower) since New Years, as has the stock market. According to one trader, the 10-yr note “caught a bid” on speculation that the Fed will leave rates low for an extended period of time. Interestingly, the odds of that happening have been dropping, and now the futures market is pricing in a 79% chance that the Fed will keep rates somewhere between 0% and .25% through April. After hitting 3.91% last Thursday, we’re back down to 3.77% this morning (mortgages prices are better by about .125).
Another story making the rounds is that the Fed may/will continue to buy mortgage-backed securities after its self-imposed March deadline if needed (the release of the FOMC minutes may help shed some light on this). Lately, most of their interest has been 4.75%-5.125% mortgages. Regardless, when you combine continued buying by the Fed, along with some interest shown by banks & servicers, with slowing supply (some mortgage banks are crying for new locks), the laws of supply and demand come into play and the prices go up.

  • Sling drops four new devices, all of which are worth a passing, if mention

    Slingbox-700u-240dpi

Slingbox has released four new placeshifting devices. They are, in order of appearance:

    Slingbox 700U
This box allows HD receivers to “sling” their “content” over the “Internet” directly, cutting out the laborous process of videotaping TV, converting it at one of those strip mall conversion places, and mailing it in the post. It connects to any set-top box with a USB port, a strange requirement to be sure..

    Sling Receiver 300
The Sling Receiver connects to any other Sling HD cable box and grabs HD streams over the local home network.

    Sling-Monitor-150-240dpi

    Sling Monitor 150
Wait, what? A TV? The wireless sling monitor is a portable TV that can grab sling streams. You can carry it from room to room or, if you’re daring, into the bathroom.

    Sling Touch Control 100
And now the piece de resistance or the most resistant piece! A touchscreen remote control! I would sleep with this one.

We’ll take a look at all the devices tomorrow but until then, thank us for making your morning.

MyDitto is the cloud-accessible NAS for people who don't know what NAS stands for
There are plenty of ways to get your datas online, more coming online by the moment, but if you’re the type who doesn’t know your WAN port from a MAC address you’re probably looking for the most straightforward solution. As of now the myDitto from Dane-Elec looks about the simplest. It’s a dual-bay device that can manage RAID 0 or 1, also sporting a pair of USB ports for when internal storage just won’t cut it and DLNA and iTunes support for media accessibility. If you don’t know what any of that means here’s the important bit: to access that storage all you need to do is connect it into your network and then plug a myDitto USB key into any internet-attached machine. Then, hey-presto, your storage will be accessible and you won’t have to configure a thing. In practice these fire-and-forget sort of implementations can often create more headaches than they solve, but if this one works it could be an ideal way for non-networkers to get networked. Mind you, at $249 for a 1TB model that simplicity will come at a premium when it launches in March.

  • Immerz KOR-fx ‘acousto-haptic’ gaming tech gets a ship date

The kids at Immerz want you to know that KOR-fx, the “acousto-haptic technology” that you never knew you wanted, is set to make its all star debut at CES this week. Compatible with any machine that sports audio, the device is essentially a set of speakers that deliver “nearly imperceptible vibrations” to areas of the chest — activating various neural pathways and creating “a more immersive entertainment experience” somewhat akin to “an uncanny ‘7th Sense’ awareness,” reinventing “all forms of multi-media entertainment” in the process. Never mind 3D, your gaming experience just got exceptionally creepy! This bad boy has been available for pre-order for a while now at the princely sum of $190, so if you already made the leap you can expect delivery sometime in May. PR after the break, yo.

  • Copia promises to blend e-books and social networking into set of new readers

Brace yourself, more e-readers on your way! First up the open platform: DMC Worldwide announces Copia, a social networking / e-book store hybrid that’s gearing up hit private beta status this month and public beta in March. With that out of the way, let’s talk hardware. Lower on the list of gear is the keyboard-laden Tidal with a 6-inch, 600 x 800 screen and 2GB internal storage. Just above that is the Tidal Touch with a 9-inch, 768 x 1024 screen, earphone / mic jack, 4GB internal upgradeable to microSD. And then we’ve got Ocean, which comes in 6-inch (600 x 800 pixels) and 9-inch (768 x 1024 pixels) variants and both feature capacitive touchscreens, 802.11b/g WiFi, tilt sensors, 4GB internal storage expandable via microSD, and some form of earphone / mic jack. Both Tidal Touch and Ocean 9 have optional 3G connectivity (that in the process halves internal storage to 2GB and nixing the microSD slot). Prices reportedly range between two and three Benjamins and will hit availability status online in April, followed by retail in June. Presser? You guessed right, it’s after the break.

  • The Truth about Feeding Horses Corn Oil

My horse has a dull coat and could stand to gain some weight, so my trainer suggested adding corn oil to his grain, for extra fat. But I’ve read recently that corn oil actually isn’t that good for horses – is that true?  I’m confused! Thanks for your help, JR, Maine

    Dear JR,

Adding fat to your horse’s diet is a great way to add calories for weight gain and essential fatty acids to improve the coat.  But you’re correct that using corn oil isn’t the right way to go about it.  In fact, you might be doing more harm than good!

That’s because all fats are not created equal.  Corn oil contains almost all Omega 6 fatty acids—generally pro-inflammatory—and very little of the anti-inflammatory Omega 3 fatty acids that have so many health benefits.  While our bodies need both types, keeping the proper balance between the two is important.  For horses, experts feel that a ratio somewhere in the range of one part Omega 6 to two parts Omega 3 (a 1:2 ratio) or even a 1:4 ratio is ideal.  However, our methods of modern horse keeping have shifted the balance by restricting access to Omega 3-rich fresh grass while providing feed high in Omega 6 fatty acids such as grain-based concentrates.

To help you better understand where these two types of essential fatty acids come from and how the balance easily becomes skewed towards the pro-inflammatory Omega 6 side, here’s a chart of the Omega 6 to Omega 3 ratios in some common horse feeds:

    Feed Omega 6:Omega 3
    Pasture 1:5, good
    Commercial, fortified grain 8:1
Whole grains: oats, corn, barley, wheat, rice 24:1
Vegetable oils: corn, sunflower 87:1, 199:1!
Vegetable oils: canola, soybean 3:1, 7:1
    Flax seed 1:4, good
Fish oil (includes the specific Omega 3s EPA & DHA) Virtually all Omega3!

In a perfect world, we’d all keep our horses turned out on green grass for its benefits to the body as well as the mind!  But since that’s not realistic for most people, just try to feed as little grain and grain oil as possible to avoid filling your horse with pro-inflammatory Omega 6 fatty acids—instead use a multi-vitamin/mineral supplement or ration balancer to fill any nutritional gaps from your forage.  Then if you want to add fat for extra calories or a shiny coat, use flax seed or fish oil and fill your horse with healthy, anti-inflammatory Omega 3 fatty acids!

  • Rumormill: Aston Martin could build hybrid Lagonda, all-electric Cygnet

Aston Martin Lagonda Concept – Click above for high-res image gallery

Are hybrid drivetrains befitting of a premium luxury and performance brand? Well, that depends on who you ask. According to such diverse automakers as BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar, Rolls-Royce and even Ferrari and Lamborghini, the answer is ‘yes’. Aston Martin CEO Dr. Ulrich Bez, though, reportedly believes otherwise. “The current hybrid technologies are not suited to the character of Aston Martin sports cars,” explains Bez.

We’re not so sure we agree, especially since Aston’s long-planned Lagonda revival – which may or may not come wrapped in an ungainly SUV package – is rumored to be equipped with a hybrid powertrain. After all, the torque-rich nature of electric motors certainly wouldn’t be a bad thing for a luxury tourer.

A few branches up on the green tree, Aston Martin’s tiny Toyota iQ-based Cygnet minicar could quite possibly get a fully electric drivetrain, which would seem to make sense given that car’s stated mission as an urban runabout for those times when a V12 Vanquish could be considered overkill. Beautiful, sonorous, splendid overkill…

  • More Books in More Places — Amazon’s Kindle DX Goes Global

The CES show floor doesn’t officially open until tomorrow, but I’m already e-booked out. While we were getting friendly with the eDGE and Alex Reader devices — both powered by Marvell — Amazon decided to offer its super-sized Kindle DX globally. The 9.7″ eInk display starts shipping in over 100 countries on Jan. 19 for the same $489 the U.S. version costs.

Obviously, the device has a GSM radio for wireless connectivity, since that’s the common network standard in many locations. For frequent travelers, this news is a boon because you’ll be able to add books on the fly all around the world. Have any of you been holding out on a Kindle DX just so you could get the global version you knew was inevitably coming?

  • Should Medicaid Pay More for Primary Care?

StethoscopeThe health-care bills passed by both the House and the Senate would both expand Medicaid, the government insurance program for the poor. One important difference between the bills: The House version would significantly boost Medicaid payments to primary-care docs, while the Senate bill would not.

This difference — highlighted in this New Republic piece — isn’t on the short list of things everybody’s talking about as the Senate and House hash out a final bill. But it’s important for people with Medicaid and the doctors who treat them, as well as for the taxpayers who would have to fund higher Medicaid payments.

Medicaid typically pays significantly less than Medicare, which in turn tends to pay less than private insurance. As a result, lots of docs say they lose money when they treat Medicaid patients, and limit the number of Medicaid patients in their practice or refuse to take Medicaid altogether. That can make it tough for people with Medicaid to find care.

So on the one hand, the benefits of expanding Medicaid coverage to more people would be significantly diminished if those people couldn’t find a primary care doctor. On the other hand, bringing Medicaid payments for primary care up to parity with Medicare payments for the same services would cost $57 billion over 10 years, according to the CBO.

  • Is Inline Linking To An Image Copyright Infringement?

Copycense points us to a writeup by a patent attorney named Steve O’Donnell about copyright and blogging. Why a patent attorney is writing about copyright is not clearly explained. Initially, since the title of O’Donnell’s post was “How many copyrights does your blog infringe?” I thought the post might be one of those blog posts that reminds us how frequently everyone “technically” infringes on copyright incidentally and how this demonstrates how screwed up copyright law is. But, no, instead, this appears to be a serious “warning” claiming that most bloggers are risking the potential of $150,000 fines by using images they find online.

Copycense points out the irony that O’Donnell uses an image in the post itself and notes that the image appears to be in the public domain, but isn’t sure. However, I think a bigger issue with the post is hidden in this sentence:

If you find a picture on Flickr, another blog, or somewhere else online and upload it to your own blog (or worse yet, inline link to it from your blog) without permission, you’re committing a copyright violation.

First of all, that’s not necessarily true. Obviously it depends on lots of other factors — but I really question the parenthetical. Would inline linking (usually called “hotlinking”) to an image be copyright infringement under any circumstance? I understand that it’s considered rude and generally frowned upon in internet circles (and, in some cases the hoster of the original file will “get back” at the hotlinker by changing the image to something different… and potentially nasty). But is it copyright infringement? Technically, a hotlinked image is no different than a link to an image. The difference in code is minimal. The image itself is never “copied” onto your server. All you are doing is telling a computer to go visit the original version of the image, which was put there on purpose.

We’ve had similar discussions in the past about whether or not it could be copyright infringement to embed an infringing video on your site — and the situation is basically the same with hotlinked images. The content still resides on the original server and is not copied to the new server at all. If the content itself is infringing, then perhaps there’s a (really, really, really) weak case for contributory infringement, but in O’Donnell’s post, he seems to be implying that even hotlinking to an authorized image would be copyright infringement, and I just don’t see how that makes sense from a technological or legal perspective at all.
