Selena Gomez is a 17-year-old American actress and singer best known for her portrayal of Alex Russo on the Emmy Award winning Disney Channel Original Series, Wizards of Waverly Place. She has starred in the television movies, Another Cinderella Story and Princess Protection Program. Before Disney, she had one of the kid roles on Barney & Friends. I know it’s traditional to take this time to look back, and to look ahead. And while I’m not a traditional sort of fellow, I do want to take just a moment here and indulge myself. New Year’s is rather arbitrary for a number of reasons, but there is one substantive change that happens today.
As of right now, I am no longer President of the James Randi Educational Foundation. That job now falls on the able shoulders of my friend D. J. Grothe, who takes that position as of today, January 1, 2010. D. J. is, quite simply, a tremendous guy, and if this is the time for looking ahead, then I see great things happening with him at the helm. He brings loads of experience to the job as well as a fresh perspective. I won’t wish him luck — I don’t put much stock in either that verb or that noun, but I hardly need to. D. J. has earned my trust, and I know he’ll be great.
Like everyone else, I don’t know what 2010 will bring. I’m working on my sooper sekrit TV project, and I’ll have news for that in the coming months, no doubt. I’m hoping to let people see my tattoo very soon, too. I’ll let y’all know as soon as I’m able.
And for astronomy, the future is always uncertain. We have astonishing capabilities coming online, with Herschel, Kepler, and WISE opening their eyes. Hubble is newly refitted, and has already once again proven its worth. Cassini still dances around Saturn, returning one breathtaking image after another. And we still have Spitzer, Chandra, and a fleet of other space-borne instruments, as well as the solid ground-based observatories that are making vast leaps in our knowledge of the heavens.
But we’re still in a recession. Times are tough for everyone, and we’re still not sure as I write this just what President Obama has in store for NASA. We may find out as early as next week, at the annual American Astronomical Society meeting, which I’ll be attending. Hopefully I’ll have some fun stories and pictures from the meeting; there is always big news revealed then.
Anyway, enough rambling. You’re probably just reading this waiting for the antacid tablets to dissolve, so I’ll sign off for now. But stay tuned. One thing I don’t need psychic powers to predict: there will be lots of good news for science, as well as bad. Either way, I’ll be here to talk about it on this blog, as will my friends and colleagues at Discover Magazine and other sites.

I’m feeling great about the new year. I think I’ve accomplished everything I wanted to in 2009, made some tough decisions that worked out for the best and learned even more lessons in my twenty-eighth year. This is the first year in a long time that I haven’t made any New Year’s Resolutions. Why? Because I’m content with where I’m at.

What is the best accomplishment you made in 2009?
I left a job that I was just not happy with to do what I’ve always wanted to do, be a full-time freelance writer. But what I really appreciated was all of my contacts continued to stay in touch about different events. This showed me that they appreciated my work regardless of the publication I was writing for. Loyal readers and loyal supporters introduce precious relationships.
What do you plan to make your biggest accomplishment in 2010?
I go to sleep around 6 a.m. to 7 a.m., wake up around 2 p.m., and work until about 10 p.m. with different freelance companies. I’d love to be able to continue to work from home for the rest of my life. And if I have to head back into corporate, I’m determined to have a career that I love just as much as I love working from home.
What was your best moment in 2009?
I stared in admiration at CNN taping President Barack H. Obama on Inauguration Day. I was just as dumbfounded that he was standing there with his hand on the Bible and First Lady Michelle Obama standing next to him as I was with my press pass while I walked through Grant Park in 2008.
What are you looking forward to most in 2010 from those around you?
I’m looking forward to seeing what else the Obama administration can do to help America. On a personal level, I’m looking forward to building up my contacts even more. There’s so much to write about and so little time. I learn so much by writing about topics that challenge me to do deeper research.
If you could make one big New Year’s resolution for 2010 for everyone around you, what would it be?
Before I resigned from a previous job, a co-worker I gained a lot of respect for told me “never operate off of emotion. You might make the wrong decision.” So I started really considering the consequences of my decisions, and I found that I made smarter decisions when I did just that. I hope others do the same, especially the Generation Y crowd because it hurts my heart a little bit more every time I see somebody else taking someone’s life. Let’s get it together, Chicago!
The e-reader onslaught continues, with Chinese company ONN (or Owen, if you will) outing its latest, the E-1 e-reader. Boasting a 5-inch E Ink screen, the making it smaller than its 6-inch rivals, the Kindle and Nook. It also supports MP3, WMA and OGG formats. That’s about all the information we have on this reader for now, and we don’t know anything about pricing or release, either. We’d be surprised, albeit pleasantly, to see the E-1 released outside of China.
