This is a simple etched rose vase that works as a great gift for almost any occasion. This is a beginners project so if you are not accustomed to working with etching cream, you can start here. It is simple to use the etching cream, but make sure to follow the safety precautions listed on the label.

Here is what you will need to get started:

• A plain glass vase
• Glass etching cream – I used Armour Etch
• Stencil – Armour #12-7042
• Rubber gloves
• Glass cleaner
• masking tape
• paper towels
• scissors
• Running water

Use the glass cleaner to clean off any fingerprints or grease that may be on your vase. With the scissors cut out a rose design and frosted backing sheet from the stencil #12-7042. Position the stencil on the vase with the tacky blue side touching the glass. Secure the stencil to the vase with masking tape.

Using the wooden stick that is enclosed, transfer the stencil to the glass surface using firm, even strokes. When the stencil is in place, remove the masking tape and peel back the clear top sheet.

Reapply the masking tape around the entire stencil. This is to keep the etching cream from hitting that part of the glass that you don’t want etched. Wear the plastic gloves when you work with the etching cream to protect your hands from exposure.

Apply a thick layer of etching cream to the stencil and let it sit for 60 seconds. That’s right, it only takes 1 minute (60 seconds) to work. Make sure to stay within the taped area. After a minute, wash off the etching cream with luke warm water and your vase is ready.

Remove all of the remaining stencil pieces and masking tape and clean the vase, again, using a glass cleaner.

This is one of the prettiest rose vases I have made. It may be a little hard to see the actual design, but it is very beautiful and delicate looking.

Last year, for our final post of the year, I wrote a message On Staying Happy. It seems, at time, that people think that I am filled with anger or rage, because of all the annoying or “bad” stories that show up here all the time. Of course, for folks who know me, this is pretty funny. I’m pretty laid back and quite happy and content for the most part — which was the point of last year’s post.

This year, for my final post of the year, I wanted to take that a step further, and point out how in awe I am of the continued amazing creativity we’ve been seeing. In just the last year alone, we’ve seen and written about so many incredible stories of creativity and innovation in a sea of negative from those who insist that it can’t be done. We’ve heard that music and movies are “dying” because of piracy, even as we’ve seen incredible new music and movies being created by people who are embracing new and innovative business models.

We’ve seen things like how Amanda Palmer connected with her fans and gave them a reason to buy, allowing her to create some fantastic new music. We’ve seen how a guy in Israel by the name of Kutiman, that no one had ever heard of probably broke all sorts of copyright laws to create create an amazing album (one of my favorites of the year). We’ve seen how Nina Paley went from being stifled by copyright to embracing alternatives and how she’s used that to build a different kind of business model. We’ve seen how the business models we talk about are suddenly being applied widely to things like books, photography and even everyday objects. It’s been an incredible year for amazing creativity both in content creation and in business models.

As a part of that, I’ve personally been blown away at the reception I’ve received (sometimes from initially “hostile” audiences) when I’ve been granted the opportunity to go out and present and discuss these business models and how they’re working.

Finally, as a result of all this, we’ve had a lot of fun running our own experiments, from which we’ve learned a ton and were able to work with some amazing and talented partners and content creators. Seeing all this happen even as the stories (without any evidence) of doom and gloom get louder and louder from those who aren’t willing to embrace change is even more exciting and encouraging. The pace with which these ideas are being adopted (and adapted) is breathtaking and exciting. We’re looking forward to the pace of this activity to only increase in 2010, and we’ve got a bunch of surprises in store as we look to not only continue discussing these concepts but to really help more people join in the fun as well.

Thanks to everyone here for making it yet another fun year. We’ve been at this for over a dozen years now, and each year is more exciting than the previous one — in large part due to the amazing community of folks who spend at least some of their free time here. We hope that you had a wonderful and exciting year as well, and look forward to more opportunities in 2010…

Livestream will show a variety of programming beginning at 6pm Eastern tonight from around the country. They note that you can even watch the “littlest ball drop” which is located in Aggieville, Kansas. Livestream’s coverage is also available on the iPhone.
We hope that this New Year’s Eve Celebration around the world could be televised online or via Justin TV.

Hulu is hosting the live stream direct from Times Square from 10 p.m. EST to 12:15 a.m. EST. Hulu’s coverage will include views of Times Square and the crystal ball dropping plus ambient sounds from the “crossroads of the world.”

It’s been an eventful week for Android, if only you look at the leaks that I’ve posted below. It’s also been a busy week for DroidDog, as our team of contributors continues to grow. It’s been a huge year for Android as well, though I think the next will be more significant in the eyes of mainstream America. Here’s to the end of a rough but exciting year, and to smoother and more exciting 2010!

Leaks

Nexus One is just around the corner and the decent leaks are finally crawling out of the woodwork. We’ve seen some high quality images and a 3G benchmark, a video of those interactive animated backgrounds, and another review that makes previous leaks look pretty scrawny.

While not everyone is happy about the expected pricing of the device – $530 outright and $180 subsidized – I think there’s more to the story than we’ve heard so far. And while people are buzzing about what else HTC may have in store in the coming days, everybody is looking to CES for some big Motorola news.

Also in the works are an LG Android for Sprint and 2.x OTA updates for G1 owners!

Hacks

We’ve seen some cool hacks since Christmas, including an Espresso ROM running on Hero, the coming of a Hero 1.5 ROM for Cliq, and the rooting of the not-yet-released Nexus One.

Carlos posted a video review of the Darkstar theme, and a tutorial on getting an extra 10MB of RAM on hacked G1s.

Year End

Hair loss usually occurs because of hormonal factors. As a consequence, biological events like puberty, pregnancy and menopause that effect female hormone levels can also cause female hair loss. I have a pattern here for a Gingerbread gift bag. There are so many variations for this pattern, but I made this one as a gift for one of my girlfriends. I never know what to give her and she likes to bake, so this is the perfect present.

Here is what you will need to get started:

• 2 pieces of red felt 6 inches x 6 ½ inches
• 2 pieces of red felt 10 inches x 2 inches
• 2 12inch strips of red felt
• Felt scraps in tan/brown, white, red
• Black fabric paint
• White fabric paint
• White paint pen
• White floss
• White ribbon, 1 inch wide
• Mini whisk
• 1 twist or bread bag tie

Sew the two 10 x 2 inch pieces of felt together to make one 20 inch strip. Take one of the of 6 x 6 ½ inch felt pieces and sew the edges, all three sides, to one side (edges) of the 20 inch strip.  Take the other 6 x 6 ½ piece and sew the edges, all three sides, to the other side(edges) of the 20 inch strip to create the bag.  Attach one of the 12 inch strips of red felt to the inside of the 6 inch piece to form the handle. Sew the other 12 inch strip to the other 6 inch piece. If you don’t have a sewing machine, you can use fabric glue.

Using the picture as a guide, trace and cut out a gingerbread form from the tan/brown felt strip. Using the white floss, sew the gingerbread man to the front of the bag. Decorate the gingerbread man with white felt scraps for buttons, small red scrap for a tie and use the black and white fabric paint to create his eyes.

Use the white marker to create his mouth and to decorate the bag front with whatever design you choose.

Cut a 12 inch piece of white ribbon and attach it to one of the handles with the twist/bread bag tie. Slip one end of the ribbon through the whisk and tie in a bow.

I filled the bag with a gingerbread cookie mix, a cookie recipe and a colorful cup and a single serving of hot cocoa mix.

Felt Gingerbread Bag

“We discovered a vertical hole on the moon,” says JAXA’s Junichi Haruyama. A mysterious tube so large and deep that it can shelter a future moon base. Until the creatures inside kill everyone, which is what happens in these cases.

Before, they didn’t know what the hole’s origin was. Now they have a theory: According to a study published in Geophysical Research Letters, the vertical cave—”213 feet (65 meters) across and some 262 to 289 feet deep (80-88 meters)”—may be a collapsed lava tube, which could provide a perfect shelter for a future moon base:

Lava tubes, underground cave-like channels through which lava once flowed, are commonly found on Earth. Because lava tubes are sheltered from the harsh environment on the moon’s surface, such tubes could one day be useful for lunar bases.

Their theory is that the flowing lava left the tunnel a long time ago, with a lava roof that later collapsed.

I’m reading their report and only two things come to my mind. One, the awesome lunar base in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001. Two, a sci-fi horror movie flick directed by Roger Corman, in which the moon base is invaded by slimy aliens, pissed off because the humans built their base on top of the entrance of their hidden colony. Based on real events, of course.

OK, maybe I have three things in mind, because now I can see Sybil Danning there too, as the queen in “Amazon Women on the Moon.” No hole connection there, though. Or maybe there is. I don’t know. Whatever. Leave me alone. I’m drunk.

[Posted 12/31/2009] The Texas Department of State Health Services and FDA notified healthcare professionals and consumers, especially pregnant or breastfeeding women, to avoid consuming a product called “Nzu”, taken as a traditional remedy for morning sickness,because of the potential health risks from high levels of lead and arsenic, noted on laboratory analysis by Texas DSHS.

Exposure to lead can result in a number of harmful effects, and a developing child is particularly at risk of effects on the brain and nervous system. Arsenic is a carcinogen, and excessive long-term exposure to it has been associated with a range of adverse health effects, including cancers of the urinary bladder, lung and skin. Nzu, which is sold at African specialty stores is also called Calabash clay, Calabar stone, Mabele, Argile and La Craie. It generally resembles balls of clay or mud and is usually sold in small plastic bags with a handwritten label identifying it as “Nzu” or “Salted Nzu.” Anyone who has been ingesting the product should contact their health care provider.

Any adverse events that may be related to use should be reported to the FDA’s MedWatch Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program online, by phone 1-800-332-1088, or by returning the postage-paid FDA form 3500 [which may be downloaded from the MedWatch “Download Forms” page] by mail [to address on the pre-addressed form] or fax [1-800-FDA-0178].

FDA Warns Against Nzu for Morning Sickness

For Honda, this month will go down as the month where pictures of the Honda CR-Z were leaked every week. On Dec. 8 we saw exterior pictures of the CR-Z and on Dec. 21 we saw some interior shots.

Today, we get some additional photos of the CR-Z on the track. The pictures seem to be screenshots of a video that we have yet to get our hands on – but we’ll be sure to post it as soon as we find it.

Refresher: Power will come from a 1.5L i-VTEC engine mated Honda’s Integrated Motor Assist hybrid technology. That will allow for a total of 128-hp and a maximum torque of 164 lb-ft. 0 to 62 mph will come in 9.7 seconds. Fuel-economy figures have yet to be released.
