White or Kevin Pearce will win Olympic gold if both Burton riders remain healthy leading to the Games. Pearce has become White’s nemesis and many in the press tent thought Pearce, not White, deserved the X Games gold medal. Pearce claimed the silver.
Pearce has undergone surgery so that they can relive buildup in this brain. Pearce’s parents, Simon and Pia, are on their way to Salt Lake City from their home in Norwich, Vt. His agent Sue Izzo said further details are not being released.
“Growing up, I never took it too seriously, and that’s why I loved it so much,” says Pearce. “My parents never put any pressure on us to go and do contest or win anything, we’d just do it ’cause we loved it and that’s what I think it’s all about.” -L.G.

With Christmas just behind us it may seem that your child has absolutely no space in their room for all those new toys in their room. Am I right?

Well, what’s a mom/dad to do with a situation like this. Surely you don’t want to add another area in the already crowded living room for yet another toy box. Not to worry, I’ve got a few solutions for you.

Spring Cleaning! Yes, I know it is only just the beginning of the new year and no one wants to think of spring yet. Okay, well some do but not all. But by re-organizing just a bit you might free up some space.

Switch Box-  Take all those old toys that you haven’t seen them play hard with in the recent weeks leading up to Christmas and box them up. You can put the box at the top of the closet, in the closet in your room or even in the garage. After a few months the Christmas toys may get old and they need a refresher, box those up and replace them with the old toys. This makes all the toys like new. For those that don’t ever get played with anymore you can simply put in another box and if they go unnoticed donate them.

Yard Sale time! Kids love to earn money, if they have some old toys that are in good condition ask them if they’d like to participate in your next garage sale and anything they sell they keep the money. Mine always jump at this.

Making Room For Christmas Toys

Virgil famously described a cave with a hundred openings as home to the most famous prophetesses of ancient legend – the Cumaean Sibyl. Written in 19 BC, the Aeneid chronicles the adventures of Trojan warrior Aeneas, including his encounter with a mysterious ancient fortune teller. It was said this oracle, or “Sibyl” (a prophetess in n classical mythology) dwelt in the mouth of a cave in Cumae, the ancient Greek settlement near what is now Naples.

In the poem the Sibyl acts as a kind of guide to the underworld, to which Aeneas must descend and seek the advice of his dead father Anchises in order to fulfill his destiny.

This was not the first appearance of the Cumaean Sibyl in art and literature, nor the last. The most famous story dates to the time of the last Roman King, Tarquinius Superbus around 500 BC.

According to the story, the Sibyl approached the king with nine books of prophesy, collected from the wisest seers, available to the king for a very dear price. The king haughtily refused her price. In response, the sibyl burned three of the books, then offered the remaining six books at the original high price. Again he refused. From the remaining six books, she threw three more books onto the fire, and repeated her offer of the final three books, at the original price. In fear of seeing all the prophesy destroyed, he finally accepted.

These books, which foretold the future of Rome, became a famous source of power and knowledge and were stored on the Capitoline Hill in Rome. In 82 BC, the books were destroyed in the burning of the Temple of Jupiter , and in 76 BC envoys were sent around the known world to rebuild the books of prophesy. The new books managed to make it until 405 AD, near the end of the Roman Empire.

The Cumaean Sibyl would later appear in works of Ovid, Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel ceiling, Dante’s Inferno, and the poetry of TS Elliott. In Ovid’s Metamorphosis (book 14) he tells of her sad end, on the losing side of a deal with the god Apollo. Apollo sought her virginity, and offered her a wish in exchange:

“I pointed to a heap of dust collected there, and foolishly replied, `As many birthdays must be given to me as there are particles of sand.’ For I forgot to wish them days of changeless youth. He gave long life and offered youth besides, if I would grant his wish. This I refused. . .”

Because of her refusal, he granted her wish in word, but not essence, and she lived a thousand years without eternal youth. When Aeneas met her, she was seven-hundred years old, and still a virgin.

According to tradition she would have sung her prophesies, or written them on oak leaves which she would leave at the mouth of the cave.

Searches for the famous cave described by Virgil were undertaken in the middle ages, and there are some other nearby niches that have also been named as the Sibylline grotto, including one closer to Lake Averno. The “official” Cave of the Sibyl was uncovered much more recently in 1932 by the archaeologist Amedeo Maiuri, who was in charge of excavations at Pompeii and Herculaneum for many years. He was also responsible for the excavation the Villa Jovis on Capri. It is now thought to be of a later vintage than the cave described by Virgil, but a plaque by the entrance still labels it as the Sibyl’s cave.

The shape of the cave indicates that it might have been Etruscan in origin, possibly cut by Etruscan slaves of the Roman conquerors, dating to around the 6th century BC (about the time of the story of the Sibylline Books). The passage has many entrances, though not the hundred mentioned, and is 5 meters high by 131 meters long, with several side galleries and cisterns.

It is very close to other famous Roman caves which lead to Lake Avernus, including the Crypta Romana, and the enormous Grotta di Cocceio, a tunnel dug through the mountain to access Lake Avernus which is large enough for chariots to pass through. In the poem, Aeneas reaches the underworld at Lake Avernus by passing first through the Sibyl’s cave, but in reality he would have needed to duck into a different cave.

All of these literal gateways into the underworld have reinforced the long-held associations of this area of Southern Italy with the mythical underworld. The volcanically active region around Naples is known as the Campi Flegrei, or “Feiry Fields.” Nearby Avernus was named as the opening to Hades by Virgil, but the area’s bubbling sulpher pits and volcanic islands smelling of brimstone were also mentioned by early writers as portals to hell.

The Antro della Sibilla is now part of the Cumae Archaeological Site (Parco Archeologico di Cuma).

January 1st of each year should be National Public Domain Day, when many different creative works enter the public domain, where they can be made useful. In years past, it was a regular occurrence as tons of creative works went into the public domain each year. Often this was by choice on the part of the copyright holder. That’s because copyright used to have a renewal requirement, and the vast majority of copyright holders found little reason to renew their copyright. In 1958-59, only 7% of book copyright holders chose to renew their copyrights, meaning that 93% of books that could have been covered by copyright were allowed to enter the public domain. The small number that did have their copyrights renewed were (not surprisingly) the books that were still huge commercial successes, whose authors and publishers wished to retain their monopoly rights.

But a change happened in 1976 in the US, with the adoption of a new Copyright Act that not only took away the renewal setup, but also made very lengthy copyrights automatic on works. Add to that continued copyright extension at the urging of the entertainment industry lobbyists, and we haven’t had an actual Public Domain Day in ages — and many of us may never see another one in our lifetimes. Considering the incredible value that the public domain has on our culture, this is a huge culture killer.

James Boyle is noting that, assuming he would have renewed his copyright, tomorrow is the day that Ray Bradbury’s Farenheit 451 would have gone into the public domain under the law as it was before 1976. But now it won’t be. Instead of the “book burning” found in that book, we’ve created a different kind of book burning. Thanks to lawyers, lobbyists and politicians, we’ve locked up a massive number of works that should be available for all, and the vast majority of which are available for none.

Unlike Fahrenheit 451, the vast majority of the culture swept into this 20th century black hole, was not commercially available and, in most cases, the authors are unknown. The works are locked up — with no benefit to anyone — and no one has the key that would unlock them. We have cut ourselves off from our own culture, left it to molder — and in the case of nitrate film, literally disintegrate — with no benefit to anyone. The works may not be physically destroyed — although many of them are; disappearing, disintegrating, or simply getting lost in the vastly long period of copyright to which we have relegated them. But for the vast majority of works and the vast majority of citizens who do not have access to one of our great libraries, they are gone as thoroughly as if we had piled up the culture of the 20th century and simply set fire to it; and all this right at the moment when we could have used the Internet vastly to expand the scope of cultural access. Bradbury’s firemen at least set fire to their own culture out of deep ideological commitment, vile though it may have been. We have set fire to our cultural record for no reason; even if we had wanted retrospectively to enrich the tiny number of beneficiaries whose work keeps commercial value beyond 56 years, we could have done so without these effects. The ironies are almost too painful to contemplate.

And, of course, it’s not just Bradbury’s book that is still locked up. Among the many things that would have/should have gone into the public domain tomorrow are Marilyn Monroe’s Playboy cover, JD Salinger’s Nine Stories and Ian Fleming’s first James Bond novel, Casino Royale. But, again, it’s not these works that we should really be mourning. It’s the other works that no one really has access to any more. What a shame.

Some ethnic groups are questioning the dropping of questions about folk’s ancestry in the 2010 census. Money is involved… Following is an excerpt from an article in the December 31, 2009 edition of Vindy.com. Note that race questions are included. Question 8 asks about Hispanic Origins, while Question 9 also deals with race. However, the questions don’t get down to country-of-ancestry in many cases.

The Polish Arts Club of Youngstown is seeking people of Polish descent to participate in a national survey being conducted by the Piast Institute, an agency devoted to Polish and Polish American affairs.

The institute has launched an online 49-question survey to find out more about the attitudes of Polish Americans regarding key public issues and more.

The survey is a response to the U.S. Census Bureau eliminating questions about people’s ancestry on the 2010 census forms. Ethnic groups are worried they might lose their fair share of federal and private dollars as institutions often rely on census date to allocate funds.

TOD ANZ has a post pondering the pros and cons of LNG vs gas pipelines for exporting Australian natural gas – Liquid Natural Gas — A Specious Climate Solution?.

Nearly US$80 billion of investment is slated for developing liquid natural gas (LNG) projects in Australia and the Timor Sea. More are planned for Southeast Asia.

The good news is that these LNG developments are aimed are replacing dirty coal-fired power in Japan, China and South Korea with a cleaner fuel: natural gas.

The bad news is that LNG’s environmental benefits are potentially so illusory that Asia might be better served by a common carrier natural gas pipeline.

LNG is natural gas compressed 600 times. It is then shipped in pressurised ocean-going tankers. This front-end compression process burns up roughly 10% of the original energy. The pressurised tankers then draw off more energy for each day at sea. At the far end, regasification consumes even more energy

The cumulative losses are so great that LNG-based natural gas supplies may not be much better than coal as a future energy source, according to researchers at Carnegie Mellon University in the United States.

Worse, shipping LNG requires huge investment in expensive, inflexible, single-purpose infrastructure. It’s a recipe for long-term financial waste.

With nearly a dozen LNG trains slated for development in Australia’s Northwest Shelf, northern Queensland, the Timor Sea and Papua New Guinea, this infrastructure could take Asia’s climate change battle backwards for decades to come.

Given the huge volumes of gas now involved in this burgeoning trade (nearly 60 billion cubic meters per year), a pipeline connecting Australia to China, Japan and South Korea may be a better deal.

Instead of insular, ‘go-it-alone’ buyer-seller LNG microeconomics, a common-carrier pipeline would enhance competition, lower prices and encourage development of smaller natural gas fields through increasing confidence in downstream market access.

Better yet, a pipeline could carry future fuels like hydrogen. LNG trains, tankers and regasification plants simply don’t have this flexibility. They risk becoming ‘stranded assets’ if future carbon pricing exposes their financial shortcomings.

If the LNG industry gets entrenched, it could doom Asia to a generation of suboptimal infrastructure. This, at at a time when trillions of dollars must be spent to battle climate change. Getting poor value for investment dollars is a bad way to fight global warming.

I had hoped today to write a poignant post reflecting on the past year or decade and adding some insights for the new ones. Instead, I spent the day entertaining my niece as the train had a two hour late departure and now I need to turn to the family New Year’s Eve celebration which involves rotini noodles and Lost. But I couldn’t leave this year behind without at least writing my one thousandth post on MotherReader – which is kind of cool – and without wishing you and yours a Happy New Year. Here’s to 2010!

The 2010 Tournament of Roses Parade troop is appropriately named “Troop 2010.” Brandon and the other members of Troop 2010 were scheduled to walk the 5.5-mile parade route in full uniform alongside the 2010 BSA Rose Parade Float.
Brandon, 16, is the son of residents Patrick and Susan Chavez. He completed his Eagle Scout Board of Review on June 18, 2009 and had his Court of Honor on October 10 at the Diamond Club in Lake Elsinore.
The Tournament of Roses hosts a variety of activities with “America’s New Year Celebration.” In 2010, the Tournament of Roses will also host the Citi BCS National Championship Game in addition to the Rose Parade and the Rose Bowl Game. A trip to the Rose Parade is “the ideal image of how to finish up a year,” said Rinehart. In addition to all that conference-hopping, Dana’s going to be doing some web work of her own. “Honestly, I need to revamp my personal website Villagers With Pitchforks. I haven’t changed the design in years.”

Alex Williams, our resident enterprise expert, is also known in certain circles as an experienced podcasting pro. His resolution is something the ReadWriteWeb team would all love to see happen.

He told us that he wants to use 2010 to “make an informative and entertaining podcast for ReadWriteWeb Enterprise that is lively, smart and fun.”

“Since I’m the new kid on the block and fresh out of J-school with my M.M.C., my new year’s resolution is to get acquainted with as many people as possible in the web/tech/startup industry and develop a healthy amount of sources.”

As seasoned journos, it’s our sworn duty to protect cub reporters from no-account rabble rousers, so we asked Chris who he specifically wanted to meet this year. He replied, “I’d love to develop some contacts from the bastions of the Web (Twitter, Facebook, Google, Digg, etc.).”

You’re in good company, kid. We’d like to meet those guys, too. Just kidding! As a RWW blogger, you’re sure to have Kevin Rose and Biz Stone on speed dial in no time. We wish you luck.

Another ReadWriteNoob is Abraham Hyatt, our intrepid Production Editor. He’s got a full slate of resolutions this year.

He told us he wants to have more one-on-one time with “the bloggers I read every day, the people whose tweets I look forward to, the friends who surprise me with what they post.”

He also said he’s going to start paying attention to things outside the tech sphere and his geographical scene. “I want to change the fact that I have no idea what’s changing in journalism in China.”

And finally, Abraham let us in on how he’s keeping his finger on the pulse of technology. “I want to learn from my 5-year-old niece as she begins using the Web. I just hooked her up with her first kids browser and the way she interacts with the Web will be a hint of what’s to come for all of us online in the next decade.”

Add in learning how to code and blogging more, two of his other resolutions, and Abraham’s got a full dance card for the rest of the year!

As for me, I plan to learn Python this year. I’ve realized in 2009 that it’s harder to be a tech writer when you don’t have a hacker-esque depth of understanding about APIs and web apps. After talking to Leah Culver, Mark Jeffrey and a bunch of other really smart programmers, I think Python is a great place to start learning about programming languages. So this year, I’m tackling a 900-page O’Reilly book, and I’m not giving up until I have a working web app of my own! Next up, Haskell.

Via Twitter, we heard from a few of our friends, including entrepreneur Renato Valdés Olmos, who pointed us to this pretty web app for those without resolutions who yearn to start small. And everyone’s favorite O.G (that’s “original geek” in these parts), Chris Pirillo, just couldn’t resist the opportunity to get sassy. “My geekiest new year’s resolution,” he said, “is 2560×1600.”

Yanofsky will star in a PBS concert special, which will tape on November 11th in her hometown of Montreal. The special will broadcast nationally on PBS affiliates during the March 2010 pledge drive and will also be available for purchase on DVD.

•Yanofsky has already shared the stage with multi-award composer Marvin Hamlisch, performed with the legendary Count Basie Orchestra and collaborated with Wyclef Jean.

•Yanofsky is the youngest performer ever to headline her own show in the history of the Montreal International Jazz Festival, which she did at age 12.

•Yanofsky will kick off a U.S. tour next spring. Of Yanofsky’s live performance, the Washington Post declared “Yanofsky… stunned the crowd with her vocal maturity….she’s something else, with a bright, pitch-perfect voice…”

Times Square on New Years Eve 2010 comes after an entire day of celebration around the world. This is really one of the last parties of the year, since 2010 has begun almost everywhere else. Once Samoa hits midnight at 6 am est, 2009 will officially cease to exist. By then, the ball will be dropped and ready to be put away for another year, then the massive Times Square cleanup will begin.

If you prefer other coverage NBC, Fox, CNN and Fox News will be among the others covering New Year’s Eve. Fox will present “Billboard’s New Year’s Live” hosted by Carmen Electra from 11pm to 12:30am. Bill Hemmer and Megyn Kelly of Fox News will host “All American New Year” also starting at 11 on Fox News channel. NBC will have “New Year’s Eve with Carson Daly” froem 10:00 to 11:00 PM EST and then from 11:30 pm on. And finally, CNN will have “New Year’s Eve Live” hosted by Anderson Cooper and Kathy Griffin, also beginning at 11PM EST.

Times Square on New Years Eve 2010 comes after an entire day of celebration around the world. This is really one of the last parties of the year, since 2010 has begun almost everywhere else. Once Samoa hits midnight at 6 am est, 2009 will officially cease to exist. By then, the ball will be dropped and ready to be put away for another year, then the massive Times Square cleanup will begin.
