Call to Climate Sceptics & others – Protest March in Canberra this Monday – Urgent

    Hi Everyone

This is a plea to assist Peter Spencer on his hunger strike to get Kevin Rudd to take notice of the fact he has offered to pay millions of dollars to other countries for locking up their forests, but he will not look at paying Australian farmers for the trees locked up by force in Australia as part of our Kyoto agreement. This issue is linked with the fact CO2 is being called a pollutant, fraudulent climate science has occurred and just processes are being suppressed. They are all organised behind the scenes to assist the Green religion.

To bring Peter Spencers case to court would assist Australians everywhere and severely dent the Green religion`s hold over politics – and not just in Australia either.

Rush Limbaugh NOT Dead - No Heart Attack

when the suspected heart attack struck him. As of this writing Rush Limbaugh is in the hospital and no words about his present condition is officially released. He is not dead as of the writing of this article. Let’s pray for his immediate recovery.

Limbaugh was seen golfing at Waialae Country Club earlier this week, KITV said. The country club is next to the Kahala hotel.

For privacy reasons, hotel spokeswoman Sheila Donnelly Theroux said she was unable to acknowledge that Limbaugh is a guest.

In 2001, Limbaugh reported he had lost most of his hearing due to an autoimmune inner-ear disease. He had surgery to have an electronic device placed in his skull to restore his hearing.

Two years later Limbaugh acknowledged he was addicted to pain medicine. He blamed the addiction on severe back pain, and took a five-week leave from his radio show to enter rehab.

  • Sprint’s New Hybrid Pocketspot… In the Wild at CES?

Reading this post at the usually reliable Engadget blog, we are pretty well convinced that a hybrid pocketspot might be the big news Sprint is teeing up next week at CES. Unlike some other folks, who seem convinced a WiMAX phone is in the offing, we’re much more bullish on the WiMAX/EVDO pocketspot (aka mobile router) product being a reality, in no small part because it’s an easier thing to build.

And after all.. the Sprint invite sent out to press and analysts in early December talked about the event being the “hottest spot in Vegas” or some such construction. Why go through such prosaic leaps if you were just announcing a phone? Sounds like a new pocketspot to us, an idea we thought about earlier this month. (Yes, we have been long early on both pocketspots and hybrid plans. Looks like that call was a good one.)

Whatever happens at the Sprint event next week, we’ll be there, and let you know when it happens… but we aren’t banking on using a WiMAX phone to make the call.

  • Herbal Hair Loss Remedies That Offer Hope

Herbs hold an obvious appeal for many people because they support the body’s natural healing mechanisms to target the cause of the problem, as opposed to merely tackling the symptoms. It would be wrong to present herbal hair loss remedies as a miracle solution for all sufferers — there is however growing evidence to support the view that some herbal remedies offer real hope to many people.

Let’s examine the case for some of the more popular remedies to determine if they’re worth trying.

Ginkgo biloba: This popular herb is thought to improve blood circulation to the brain and skin. Herbalists believe that the increased flow of blood to the brain area delivers more nutrients to the hair follicles thus promoting hair regrowth. The recommended dose is 120-160mg of dry extract each day spread over three doses.

Green tea (Camellia sinesis): It is thought that catechins found in green tea may inhibit the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase that converts testosterone into hair-unfriendly DHT. It is therefore believed to be effective in preventing and treating male pattern type baldness. You should drink several cups of green tea each day or take it in capsule form as instructed by the manufacturer.

He Shou Wu (Polygonum multiflorum): Also known as Fo-Ti, this Chinese herb has traditionally been used to reduce hair loss. It is found in many commercial preparations, or in tea and capsule form.

Pygeum (Pygeum africanum): Derived from the bark of an evergreen, it works in a similar way to green tea. It is widely used to treat prostate problems and male pattern baldness. Users should take 60-500mg per day in pill or capsule form.

Saw palmetto (Seranoa repens): This is the current treatment of choice for many men due to its ability to protect the prostate, slow hair loss and encourage hair regrowth. It forms the core element of many commercially prepared hair loss treatments but can easily be obtained in its pure form. The recommended dose is a 160mg capsule twice each day, but make sure the ingredients are made from the berry extract not the dried berries themselves.

Stinging nettle (Urtica diocia): This has long been favored as a means of preventing hair loss due to its ability to block the conversion of testosterone into DHT. It can be taken in pill or capsule form with an optimum dose of 50-100mg per day. It is particularly effective when combined with pygeum and saw palmetto.

  • Hair Loss Prevention is Easy

The most common health problem suffered by most individuals these days is hair loss. This is a health problem that affects the self esteem of most people across the globe. Healthy hair plays an important role in displaying the overall personality of a person.

Hair Loss can make a person lose confidence and even self esteem in some cases. It can also result in a good amount of stress and anxiety. Hair on the scalp is very important for good looks. It provides an aura to one’s overall personalities. Hence, it is very important to get the right kind of treatment at the right time to save your crowning glory.

However, there is no need to panic for the receding hair line. There are several treatments and products available on the market these days to prevent hair loss.

Here are some great tips to stop hair loss. Follow them and save the aura and overall health of your crowning glory.

    a) Say no to chemicals

Experts believe that exposure of hair to chemical products is one of the main reasons of hair loss. Frequent use of hair dyes, serums, hair sprays, gels, hair straightening machines and perming products result in breakage of hair. If you are serious about saving your hair, stay away from chemical based products.

    b) Exercise

Working out makes you overall health glow. It also does a lot good to your hair. Working out regularly will increase the blood circulation and provide great benefits to hair.

    c) Eat healthy

You need to strong from inside to get hair that shine with health. Eat a lot of fresh fruits and salads to promote hair growth. Include Soya products, sprouts, spinach, cabbage, carrots, fish, chicken, dairy products and papaya to promote hair growth prevent hair loss.

    d) Vitamin Supplements

Including vitamin supplements will help a great deal in preventing hair loss. Include supplements of vitamin A, C, B and E in your diet to provide good health to your hair. Biotin is a good vitamin for promoting hair growth. Make sure that you consult a trained health care practitioners or trichologist before including vitamin supplements in your diet for supporting hair growth and preventing hair loss.

    e) Pillow cases

Change your pillow cases. Switch over to satin pillow cases as these reduce friction and prevent hair loss.

    f) Hair Style

Keep a note on the kind of hair style that you are using. Don’t tie your hair tightly. Avoid using harsh hair accessories.

    g) Dandruff Check

Dandruff can be the main cause for hair loss. Let your doctor or trichologist prescribe a special shampoo or medication to remove dandruff. Once your scalp is dandruff free, there would be no hair fall.

    h) Take care of your health

Visit a doctor and get a routine check up. He may ask you to go for a blood test. Once an illness is detected, make sure that you take opt medication and wait for the results.

    i) Be kind to your hair

Don’t expose your hair to harmful ultra-violet rays, chemical dyes and complicated hairstyles.

Follow the tips mentioned above and you would prevent hair loss. It is equally important to consult a hair loss expert before using a product to prevent hair loss. All the tips mentioned above will be useless if you don’t talk to a professional. The professional will definitely help you with your hair loss prevention plan.

  • Christmas Tree Recycling, Chipping and Composting

    charlie-brown-christmas-tree.jpg
The coming of the New Year means it’s time to take down the Christmas tree. If you chose to use a cut down tree, disposing of it ethically means making sure it doesn’t end up in the landfill. Most towns have curbside programs where the trees are taken to a green waste facility where they are chipped into mulch or compost. Many communities are using disposed Christmas trees for great benefit. From electricity to wildlife restoration, christmastree.org features the following community programs:

  • Saving Lives with Vaccines – Toronto, Ontario
  • Wildlife Habitat – Porter County, Indiana
  • Mulch for Planting – Georgia
  • Dune Restoration – Gulf Shores, Alabama
  • Rebuilding the Louisiana Coastline – Jefferson Parish, Louisiana
  • Home for the Herons – Cook County, Illinois
  • Giving Back to the Community – San Diego, California
  • Improving Fishing Areas – Keene, New Hampshire
  • Building Better Parks – Clarksville, Tennessee
  • Fueling Our Nation’s Industry – Tomahawk, Wisconsin
  • One Man’s Trash is Another Fish’s Habitat – Oroville, California
  • Keeping Communities Beautiful – Reno, Nevada
  • Turning Trees into Electricity
  • – Burlington, Vermont

One of my favorite Christmas tree recycling comes from Inhabitots, “Last year, even the Vatican went green by recycling the Christmas tree in St. Peter’s Square by using its wood to make toys for children.” What’s your community doing with their left over Christmas trees?

Analysis, including excerpts from and links to the key emails.

Welcome to my analysis of Climategate, the climate science scandal that has already eclipsed Watergate in terms of its global political ramifications.

Climategate began on November 19, 2009, when it is believed that a whistle-blower leaked thousands of emails and documents central to a Freedom of Information request placed with the Climatic Research Unit of the University of East Anglia in the United Kingdom. This institution had played a central role in the “climate change” debate: its scientists, together with their international colleagues, quite literally put the “warming” into Global Warming: they were responsible for analysing and collating the various measurements of temperature from around the globe and going back into the depths of time, that collectively underpinned the entire scientific argument that mankind’s liberation of “greenhouse” gases—such as carbon dioxide—was leading to a relentless, unprecedented, and ultimately catastrophic warming of the entire planet.

Click source to read an excellent (ongoing) analysis of the climategate emails; stripped the jargon and listed those most relevant in chronological order.

  • Calgary Herald reporter Michelle Lang and four soldiers killed in Afghanistan

Calgary Herald reporter Michelle Lang, seen in this 2005 file photo, was killed by an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan Dec. 30, 2009, while covering the war for the Canwest News Service. Four Canadian soldiers also died in the blast.

I write with deep sadness that Calgary Herald reporter Michelle Lang and four Canadian soldiers were killed in a bomb blast Wednesday in Afghanistan. (You can pay your respect to Michelle Lang at this Facebook group.)

Reports from Calgary Herald, Calgary SunCBC (with video), G&M, CTV (with video), Maclean’s, and a heartbreaking portrait by Robert Remington at Calgary Herald.

    An excerpt from Calgary Herald,

Award-winning Calgary Herald reporter Michelle Lang was killed Wednesday in Afghanistan while reporting on the Canadian mission in the southern regions of the war-torn country.

Four Canadian soldiers also died in the blast, while a Canadian civilian was injured, the Department of National Defence said late Wednesday.

Lang, 34, was on patrol with a Canadian convoy of soldiers in the Kandahar area when the military vehicle they were travelling in struck a roadside bomb.

She is the first Canadian journalist to die in the Afghan war since Canada joined the international mission in 2002, and is believed to be the first Herald reporter ever killed on the job in the paper’s 126-year history.

An excerpt from Robert Remington’s heartbreaking portrait,

As we got the horrible confirmation Wednesday from Lorne Motley, our editor-in-chief, stunned colleagues hugged and cried. We had heard the rumours earlier in the day, that Michelle had been killed by a roadside bomb en route to do a story on reconstruction efforts. She was outside the safe confines of Kandahar Airfield, and my first thought was that I wished it was me rather than her. All I ever wanted to be was a foreign correspondent. But Michelle was young, Afghanistan was a better “career move” for her, and off she went with commitment, although not without some trepidation.

We talked about it a bit, but not at length. Michelle told me that her mom was scared about her Afghanistan assignment. She also told me of the day not long ago when she filled out the Department of National Defence forms regarding next of kin, which made her feel nervous. I encouraged her, even envied her, but told her that if anything bad happened to her over there, I would be “very upset.”

Upset doesn’t begin to describe it. Like most everyone in our sad newsroom, I’m numb and haven’t stopped sobbing all day. I cannot grasp that Michelle, one of the nicest people I have ever known, is gone.

And an excerpt from Calgary Herald Don Braid’s “Michelle earned respect for fair, honest reporting“,

On May 22, Michelle won a National Newspaper Award, the equivalent of an Oscar in our business. She was deemed Canada’s best beat reporter, meaning she’s the cream of everyone who regularly covers anything, anywhere — from courts to crime, schools, city halls, legislatures, Parliament and much more.

Dec 31st, 2009 Update: The 4 soldiers have now been identified and they are,

Sgt. George Miok, 28, Cpl. Zachery McCormack, 21, both of Edmonton, Sgt. Kirk Taylor, 28, of Yarmouth, N.S., and Pte. Garrett Chidley, 21, of Cambridge, Ont.

My thoughts are with the families and loved ones of Michelle, George, Zachery, Kirk, and Garrett.

  • You Could Not Make It Up: Science Journals Must Be Unpolluted by Politics by Michael E. Mann, Wall Street Journal

Article Tags: Pat Michaels, Reply To Article, You could not make it up

In his Dec. 18 op-ed “How to Manufacture a Climate Consensus,” Patrick J. Michaels of the Cato Institute falsely claims that work by him (and other fossil-fuel-funded climate change contrarians) has been unfairly blocked by me and others from appearing in mainstream science journals because the peer review process is supposedly biased against climate science deniers.

In truth, the only bias that exists at such publications is for well-reasoned writing that is buttressed by facts.

That is why climate skeptics such as Richard Lindzen of MIT or John Christy of the University of Alabama—who are widely regarded as credible and whose work contributes meaningfully to the scientific discourse—have no problem publishing their work in mainstream scientific journals.

And what about those who are not being published? Every scientist dealing with a major public issue must decide if he or she is going to be a scientist or a de facto politician.

  • Movie Studios Pissed Off At Netflix, Don’t Want To Allow More Streaming Movies

Honestly, at what point do entertainment execs finally figure out that by purposely not making content available in the format people want it in, they’re only encouraging them to get that content through unauthorized means? We already knew that the big movie studios were annoyed with Netflix and trying to get Netflix to delay movie rentals until at least a month after the DVD comes out. Now we have an explanation why. As JJ was the first (of a few) to send in, the studios apparently are quite annoyed that, in order to jumpstart its movie streaming offering, Netflix routed around the movie studios, and signed a deal with Starz that allowed it to stream the same movies without a direct deal with the studios. It’s not clear how or why Starz had the right to also stream movies through Netflix, but I’m guessing it was a loophole in Starz’ deals with the studios — a loophole that’s now closed. So, Netflix is saying it needs to convince Hollywood it’s not the enemy, but Hollywood isn’t quite buying it yet.

This really shouldn’t be a huge surprise. After all, this is Hollywood, where reports that actually show that the movie industry will grow quite a bit in the next decade are also used to claim that rental services like Redbox and Netflix are killing off jobs. It’s also the world where Hollywood execs still think that the answer to their problems (problems like its best box office year ever) is to just add more release windows. It’s as if they still think that keeping content away from people makes them more likely to buy.

  • Keep the Anxiety Guru Show Alive

Many of you know that recently I was planning to unplug the Anxiety Guru Show. And now that the deadline I set is here it pains me to do this, so I had an idea.

For those of you that don’t know The Anxiety Guru Show is a podcast that I produce. Anyway, due to money issues I thought of closing down the podcast until things improved economically.

The problem is that many people love the podcast and gain a great deal from it. This is why closing it down without a fight made me cringe. So running a short fund raiser I guess will be a good way of checking to see how much people want to keep this service around.

Here is the bottom line. I write this blog and produce the podcast because I’m passionate about what I do. I don’t do this for money, and in fact I lose some money as a result. The few dollars I do earn from ads (we are talking pennies) helps with only a portion of the expense of running this site.

What I do is help people. I’ve received hundreds of emails from people all over the world that thank me for helping them out, even if that help is modest.

Thing is, most of those emails come from podcast listeners. People that made a connection with me and hopefully learned a little something.

I’d like nothing more than to continue the podcast, but I need some help. Giving my time and effort for free is not a problem. It sounds cheesy but every time I get one of those thank you emails I always feel the same, happy, fulfilled, and motivated to continue.

But when it comes to out of pocket expenses, well that’s a different matter altogether. So then, to keep the podcast alive I need to raise $200. With this money I can continue to produce the podcast for another 12 months.

Sounds like chump change, but you tell that to my wife! Seriously though, it’s not a huge amount of money but nowadays every dollar counts.

I was reluctant to have a fund raiser because I know some people get annoyed or mostly just ignore them. But please don’t ignore the Anxiety Guru Show. Whether it’s the podcast or the blog you enjoy, help me continue so that the people that do find me on the internet can know my message and feel just a bit better about their situation.

I figure that if I don’t get the donations needed I will at least know that I tried to keep the show alive.

Now, if you’ve read this far I’m hoping that means you’re in the mood to donate to this great cause. Just hit the donate button below or on the homepage and complete the Paypal donation form. $1, $2, any amount is appreciated.

Because it’s through Paypal all donations will be processed through their secure website. And whether you donate or not, I want to wish you and your family happiness and prosperity in 2010. Happy New Year!

    Goal: $200 Donations: $50

  • 3 Reasons Why Male Baldness is Getting Worse!

Male baldness and thinning hair causes distress to many men, and will affect the vast majority at some point in their lives. But there are three reasons why this already massive number is set to rise even more!

For approximately 20% of men, male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia) will start as early as puberty. For them, hair loss will be extremely rapid and severe. For 60%, this process is more gradual, or might start later on in life. Nevertheless, they too can eventually suffer extensive hair loss. This leaves just 20% of men who might never experience male baldness. But, even for them, a future full of scalp hair is now far from certain. These are the reasons why:

    1. Poor nutrition

    2. Stress

    3. An aging population

    1. Poor nutrition

Nearly everyone loves junk food. It tastes great doesn’t it? But would it taste as great if you were told that it’s making your hair loss worse?

It’s well known that the typical junk food diet enjoyed by Western societies is causing a serious obesity problem, and that degenerative disorders like heart disease, hypertension and diabetes also have a big connection with this type of diet.

However, the excessive consumption of beer, burgers, sugary drinks, red meat, etc, can also contribute to male baldness: if your normal day-to-day diet contains too much sugar and fat, your rate of hair loss can increase. That’s because these types of food can affect your hormone production and balance. And hormones have, undeniably, been linked to male baldness.

The hormone mostly responsible for male baldness is a derivative of testosterone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT). And, given that testosterone is derived from fat, it’s very easy to see how DHT levels can become excessive if you eat too much junk food.

Your body also uses fat to produce sebum (an oily substance secreted from hair follicles). In excess, sebum may also hinder hair growth by clogging up the follicles as hair tries to grow along them.

Your body can convert any excess of food you eat into fat. And this is especially true of sugar. Male baldness has been associated with high insulin levels, and insulin production usually increases when you consume more sugar. This, by the way, includes alcohol – sugar forms a significant part of many alcoholic drinks. And simply taking vitamins for thinning hair and hair loss won’t help nearly as much as avoiding junk food in the first place.

So, if you regularly consume high levels of sugar and fat, you won’t be doing your hair any favours at all!

    2. Stress

More and more people are living today’s fast paced 24-7 lifestyle. The whole world, it seems, is getting faster! And with this hectic way of life comes an increase in stress. Physical, chemical, and mental stress can all upset a body trying to maintain balance.

Physical and chemical stress can come from many sources – pollutants within the environment (city smog, exhaust fumes, etc), insufficient sleep (do you get 8 hours every night?) a junk food diet, cigarette smoke, deodorants, etc. All these things are unnatural and will accumulate within your body and upset its balance.

Even when you play sport, your body is placed under stress. Physical exercise is quite obviously healthy to an extent. But, if you over exert yourself, or undertake rigorous exercise nearly every day, your body will experience more stress.

Mental stress can easily develop from work pressure (deadlines and responsibilities) and stressful relationships (perhaps the mother-in-law?) All these things can fester in your mind and prolong the stress response you have.

Stress can seriously disrupt hormone balance, and that means bad news for your hair! The accumulation of stress in your life year-on-year can show itself by causing your rate of hair loss to increase.

    3. An aging population

Thanks to improvements in hygiene, healthcare and medical procedures, people are living longer than ever before. This means that the percentage of older men in the population is increasing (i.e., when compared to the percentage of younger men). As a result, the previous two reasons for this rise in male baldness will, quite simply, apply to more people. Bit by bit, the cumulative damage from years of eating and drinking junk, as well as other forms of stress, will take their toll.

As you age, your metabolism slows down. This means that your body finds it much more difficult to maintain sufficient hormone levels and balance. And, as already stated, the inability to maintain proper hormone balance can cause male hair loss to increase. Basically, for the vast majority of men, an older body simply does not grow hair as well as it used to!

Note that, poor diet, stress and aging are not the underlying cause of male pattern baldness, but they can make any existing hair loss condition you have, worse. There are also many other factors that can affect both hair loss and growth.
