  • Sleep Aid – the iPhone app for snorers

Stop snoring with a new iPhone app from Finish company Remote Analysis Ltd (Graphic: Busin...

My snoring doesn’t worry me – however, my wife finds it a pain in the neck. And while it might be stopping her from getting a good’s night sleep, it could be doing me more harm if it’s a sign that I’m suffering from sleep apnea – a condition in which patients pause during breathing while asleep, denying themselves oxygen. For US$2.99 snorers (or their long-suffering partners) can purchase a new iPhone app developed by Remote Analysis Ltd, a telemedicine provider from Finland, that analyzes snoring and advises if the patient should seek medical help…

Honda HSV-10 GT – Click above for high-res image

The Honda NSX might be gone, but it’s set to live on as the HSV-10 GT in Japan’s SuperGT championship.

Although we don’t have an official release or specs yet, we do have the image above and some preliminary details on the HSV-10 GT or Velocity Sports Honda. Built to the 2010 GT500 regulations, the new front/mid-engine racer from Honda is packing a 500+ hp, 3.4-liter V8 and sending power through the same Ricardo sequential manual gearbox fitted to the 2010 SuperGT cars from Nissan and Toyota. Underneath all that glorious carbon fiber is the same chassis Honda’s been working on (originally as an NSX replacement) for the last two years. The SuperGT season opener is scheduled for March 20 and 21 of 2010, but we expect more details and a host of high-res images to hit soon. Stay tuned…

  • Cocoa

Living out in the boonies in Canada I don’t have access to many of the low carb products available in the U.S., or even in larger population areas. My darling daughter-in-law found me some DaVinci’s syrup for my birthday. She had remembered me moaning in the summer about having to order it online if I wanted any and how expensive shipping would be. She even remembered the four kinds I thought I would like to try first! Since then I have been experimenting and really enjoying these syrups. This cocoa recipe I came up with may not sound great, but it is. Even my husband ( the donut eating butterhorn chomping chocolate chip cookie stuffing his face skinny non-diabetic) likes it.

Melt 2-3 tsps butter in a mug in the microwave-about 12 seconds
Stir in a scant 2 tsps. cocoa powder
Fill with hot water and return to mw for about 1 minute.
Add about 1 tblsp of whatever DaVinci syrup you like- I have tried caramel, vanilla and amaretto, all great

  • Poetry Review: God Loves Rich Kids By Robert Louis Henry

    Review By Randall Radic

For lack of a better term, I’d describe Robert Louis Henry (RLH) as a happy pessimist, full of a delighted despair, which emanates from his belief in God – a God whom he views as disinterested, and therefore doubtful – which is why RLH says he’s an agnostic nihilist.  This is evidence of great intellectual capacity.  For those who never doubt God do not believe in the Person of God, they only believe in the idea of God.

Robert Louis Henry’s theological system – agnostic nihilism – is a constant theme throughout his poems.  Many, if not all of his themes, are a cynical exploration of religious concepts:  death and suffering, life as a form of exile, the absoluteness of God, the denial of a workable faith, sin, the state of civilization, the tragicomedy of history.

Like an archaeologist he digs at these subjects with his favorite tool – cool, clear verse: poems, which carry vital truths.  Writing poetry this superb, while at the same time providing an easy intimacy, demands wisdom and talent.  Stylistically, the mode is extremely difficult.  It is equivalent to boiling down three pages of text into one passionate apostrophe.  Each single word hints and cajoles, and each sentence bares philosophic truth, even though the truth may be negative, and the reader may disagree.

RLH’s poems not only communicate, but they flow easily as they do.  It’s more like listening to music than reading, for the tune is melodious and the words sound good together.

Moreover, unlike in our faded times, where poets are cautioned against using adjectives willy-nilly because they are so loose and so distracting, like hookers standing in a doorway, waiting for their next dupe, RLH uses them conspicuously – literary flamboyance with an almost palpable energy.  He breaks all the rules and is better for it.

God loves rich kids is outstanding!

One of my favorites is ‘Exaggerations,’ which concludes thusly:

    “Near the lake there’s

    a restaurant that a

    professional wrestler

    bought for his mother,

    and it’s considered an attraction.

    but I’ve been there,

    It’s just seafood.”

Which to me says RLH went there, looking for the attraction, hoping for the attraction.  All he found was seafood.  In other words, is that all there is?

My other favorite is ‘A Loaded Deck,’ which is like looking into a holy kaleidoscope.  It’s about a deck of religious playing cards, which might be Catholic or Baptist.  He isn’t sure.

    “I’ve recently found

    the Jesus-Jacks

    and wonder what

    the other faces are.”

Robert Louis Henry is waiting to be stared down by God.  Snarling and growling, half-depressed, despairing at the absurdity of his very existence, nevertheless there’s a bouncy joy inside him.  A joy at simply being alive and able to wonder, doubt and philosophize.

RLH wants to be loved most of all.  And he wants God to do it.  It’s just that he doubts there is a God.  I suspect the joy within him he can’t hide is rooted in some secret guess that there is indeed a God – somewhere – who will eventually stare him down, crumbling all his despair.

Otherwise why would he write so beautifully of smoking off the same cigarette of a God who loves rich kids?

On the Read-O-Meter, which ranges from 1 star (bland) to 5 stars (zesty), God loves rich kids earns 5 stars.  Simply because it’s so darn good.

Robert Louis Henry lives, studies, and creates in Tennessee. His poetry appears in various electronic and print magazines including 3:AM, The Delinquent, and The Commonline Project. His songs can be heard in select living rooms and bedrooms. God loves rich kids and we smoke off the same cigarette (Bygawd Books 2010) is a 60 page poetry collection consisting of several mini-chapbooks. He’s currently working on a collection of multimedia pieces driven by prose.  You’ll find the author online at www.wesmokeoffthesamecigarette.info/robert-louis-henry.html

Last Thursday I was diagnosed with PCOS insulin resistant/pre-diabetic.

The Endo put me on Metformin. 500 mg said to start with one and every couple oh days add another and work up to 4 x a day.

I am SO sick. I;ve never gotten past one a day. Symptoms are major nausea occasional stomach cramps. I am very tired occasionally get light headed and feel faint as if my blood sugar is too low.

The Endo said nothing about diet. The pharmacist encouraged me to try a low glycemic diet. Said I might be able to avoid meds.

So, I don’t know if I’ve over done it on restricting carbs or if I am one of those who have a really tough time with met.

Thoughts? Any tricks for alleviating nausea?

  • ARTICLE: Has Apple booked the Moscone West center for a June iPhone announcement?

San Francisco’s Moscone West convention center has been booked from June 28 to July 2, under the vague-sounding slot called “Corporate Event.”

Apple watchers know that June has typically been the month of iPhone announcements, and since the company’s had its WorldWide Developers Conference every June at Moscone West over the last few years, you’ve got to know that this is setting some tongues wagging.

The original iPhone debuted at WWDC in June 2007, with the next two models each year at the same event on the same month: the iPhone 3G in 2008 and the 3GS in 2009. Given that the pundits are expecting a big refresh this year — not just a minor upgrade — and the June tradition looking good for 2010, it seems some excitement may be heading our way this summer. Since it seems that Apple’s sticking to its typical schedule, can we also look forward to an iPhone SDK event in March as well? Man, I hope so.

iPhone 4.0 — It’s kind of amazing that so few words could hold so much potential excitement.

  • The Nitrate Towns of Chile

Chile, South America | Ghost Towns

Until 1909, Chile had something very special. Known as white gold, Chile saltpeter, or more technically as Sodium nitrate, it was an extremely valuable commodity for two main reasons: it could kill, and it could also give life.

Like its cousin, Potassium nitrate, Sodium nitrate could be used both as a fertilizer, and as a explosive, or rocket fuel. When someone talks about a fertilizer bomb this is the stuff they are talking about. The reason it was so valuable was that you couldn’t really make the stuff, you had to find it and Chile had tons of it.

So valuable was this “white gold” that Chile went to war with its neighbors over areas containing the valuable saltpeter. In the oft forgotten War of the Pacific or “Saltpeter war,” Chile, Peru and Bolivia all fought over territory containing the minerals with Chile gaining much of the disputed territory.

At the turn of the century the Saltpeter Works of Humbert and Santa Laura were both busy trying to extract as much of this Saltpeter as possible. Hundreds of buildings were built and whole communities of workers from South America, Europe and Asian formed around these towns. In the words of UNESCO they became a “distinct urban community with its own language, organization, customs, and creative expressions, as well as displaying technical entrepreneurship.”

But something was coming that would change this all. In 1909 two German scientists, Fritz Haber and Carl Bosch figured out how to chemically fix nitrogen, that is, how to make this white gold on an industrial level. It was disastrous for the Saltpeter towns, and despite efforts to compete, by 1960 they were completely and totally abandoned.

Today the towns ghostly remains stand as rusting ruins in the inhospitable Atacama desert. In 2005 UNESCO declared them a World Heritage Site.

Other “nitrate towns” nearby in a similar condition include Chacabuco, Maria Elena, Pedro de Valdivia, Puelma and Aguas Santas. It is ill advised to visit Chacabuco, which was used as a concentration camp by Pinochet and is still surrounded by unmarked landmines.

Researchers have discovered that common bacteria suspended in a solution can be made to turn microgears. This opens up the possibility of building hybrid biological machines at the microscopic scale. The researchers say the discovery demonstrates how microscopic swimming agents, such as bacteria or man-made nanorobots, in combination with hard materials, can constitute a “smart material”, which can dynamically alter its microstructures, repair damage, or power microdevices…

  • China Raises The Great Firewall Even Higher, Claims It’s To Stop Piracy

The NY Times is reporting that the Chinese government appears to be raising the walls on the Great Firewall of China even higher, shutting down a bunch of sites, limiting the ability to let individuals put up their own websites, and completely restricting the ability to offer third party mobile content. Here’s where it gets sneaky. The Chinese government claims that it’s an effort to stop “piracy.” And, indeed, some of the sites that were shut down appear to be sites related to file sharing. But this is great for the Chinese government — because US lobbyists and diplomats have been complaining about Chinese “piracy” for ages, even as US diplomats have complained about free speech restrictions online in China. So, by hiding a more massive crackdown behind the claim that the government is really “cracking down on piracy,” China knows that the US can’t complain too much. After all, it’s been demanding a crackdown on piracy for so long. So what if that “crackdown” also massively limits the ability of individuals to communicate freely online?

  • Ham Hash and Eggs ~ Holiday Breakfast or Brunch with Leftovers!!!

A play on corned beef hash this Ham Hash and Eggs makes a great breakfast or brunch dish and uses some of that leftover ham you may have. Instead of potatoes my hash uses a tiny dice of turnips along with the more familiar ingredients in hash. A little time and patience will allow the ingredients to crisp up and caramelize just like the real thing. Personally, I prefer a nice poached egg on top because of the soft, runny yolk just gives this a luxurious mouth feel but feel free to top this hash with your favorite style egg. I hope you enjoy.

    Ham Hash and Eggs

    Ingredients:

    1 Tbsp. unsalted butter
    1 tsp. olive oil
    1/2 cup onion, chopped
1/2 cup red bell pepper, chopped
    1 cup turnip, finely diced
    1 garlic clove, minced
    1 1/3 cups ham, diced
    1 tsp. fresh thyme
    1 tsp. paprika
    1 Tbsp. fresh parsley, chopped
    salt and pepper
4 eggs, poached or other style cooked
1 tsp. white vinegar for poaching

Melt the butter with the olive oil in a large saute pan over medium high heat. Add the onion, red bell pepper and turnip. Saute for about 3 to 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat and add the garlic, ham, thyme and paprika. Season with salt and pepper if desired but remember the ham is salty. Stir to blend. Cook slowly over low heat in a flat layer and stir after about 5 minutes. Repeat this process of stirring and then flattening layer to cook until the hash is crispy and caramelized. Add the parsley at the last minute.

To prepare poached eggs fill a large saute pan about halfway with water. Add the vinegar to the water. This keeps the egg white from spreading. Bring to a simmer and reduce heat to very low. Break eggs, one at a time, into a small bowl and gently slide into the barely simmering water. Cook until desired doneness of eggs. Carefully remove with a slotted spoon and dry on a clean kitchen towel. Serve over Ham Hash.
