  • Stand Up for Juvenile Justice

On Thursday, the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee will decide whether to take action on the reauthorization of the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act — a critical law that provides states with funding and requires them to follow a set of guidelines aimed at improving conditions for juvenile prisoners and reducing recidivism.

The bill before the Judiciary Committee contains a list of improvements to the law, and it will take your voice to make sure these measures survive to the final version.

Please join me in contacting lawmakers today to urge them to take action on this critical bill.

  • How to Replant a Living Christmas Tree

If you have a living Christmas tree this holiday season that’s cool because it’s a green choice. However, if it’s your first living tree you may be wondering how to plant it once the holiday is over.

Below is a video and some tips that can help.

    Other tips…

    • If you are still considering a living tree for this year or next, make sure to choose a healthy tree if you want a healthy later planting. This means when you buy a tree it should have a healthy and full not droopy look to it, also any living Christmas tree you buy should come with its roots intact and be wrapped in burlap with a ball of earth. The ball of earth should not be frozen at time of purchase. Fir, spruce, and pine holiday trees all are good choices for replanting after the season. Hemlocks are not recommended.
    • BEFORE bringing your Christmas tree indoors, transition it first in a cool spot – one that’s warmer than outside, but cooler than insider. Your garage or a solid shed is a good transition spot. Leave your tree there for a few days before you bring it inside to decorate.
    • To keep your tree healthy enough to later replant don’t have it inside too long. While some people love having a tree up for a month or more, this is not how to manage a living Christmas tree. Only have it up and decorated inside for about two weeks at most and of course do all the normal things you should to keep a Christmas tree healthy – water regularly, keep it away from heat sources, and use the minimum amount of lights. Christmas lights can dry out the needles.

Do you have a living Christmas tree this year? How is that working out for you?

  • Hennessey Performance Venom GT rendered, nearly uncovered

Hennessey Venom GT – Click above for high-res image gallery

After providing us an exclusive glimpse inside the Hennessey Performance workshop, the Texas-based tuner has let more details slip on the development of the Venom GT — a Lotus Elise-based supercar packing Corvette ZR1 firepower.

Before the production version debuts at the Geneva Motor Show this March, Hennessey has released a few renderings, along with more shots from inside the shop and a basic spec sheet, including performance figures and few technical details. The rear-drive, two-seater should tip the scales at 2,395 pounds, with a twin-turbo V8 mounted amidships and dolling out 1,000 horsepower at 6,600 rpm and 950 pound-feet of torque at 4,800 rpm. As reported previously, power will be sent through a six-speed manual gearbox with forward progressed scrubbed off by Brembo brakes sized 15 inches in front and 14 inches in the rear. And the performance stats are nothing short of unbelievable. 0-60 mph will be dispatched in 2.2 seconds. 0-100 mph in 4.9 seconds and the 200 mph mark will be had in 14.5 seconds before maxing out at a claimed 262 mph. Judging by the newly released pics, the Venom GT is nearly complete and we expect to see the production version before it’s official unveiling in Switzerland.

  • Renault stays in Formula One after selling stake in team

The Renault name will remain on the Formula One grid when the series resumes in 2010 thanks to a deal announced today. There had been considerable speculation in recent months that Renault would shut down its F1 effort and follow Honda, BMW and Toyota out the door. These rumors hit a fever pitch after the “Crash-Gate” controversy and the sudden departure of primary sponsor ING.

However, in the past couple of weeks it became plausible that Renault could stay in the sport although in a scaled down fashion. Luxemborg based Genii Capital will buy a majority stake in the team which will retain the automaker’s name. The exact percentage hasn’t been disclosed although the earlier speculation had Renault retaining only 25 percent of the team.

Renault will retain the engine building operation and continue to supply the Red Bull Racing team in 2010. The press release is after the jump.

  • Home Safety – Identity Protection

While most identity theft takes place when you’re shopping at the store or opening phishing emails, there are other ways that identity thieves use to collect the information they need. Protecting your identity should start at home.

    identity theft prevention

People who swipe mail from mailboxes to help them in their quest to steal a specific person’s identity aren’t just a Lifetime movie phenomenon. I know of at least one person who had her identity assumed by a person who lived nearby. The person went as far as checking her mailbox every day before she got home and swiping anything that could help build the false identity. She was able to swipe a library card and check out a big stack of books and DVDs and stole quite a few other pieces of mail, too. If you have a mailbox that is accessible to anyone who bothers to yank open the little door on the front, you may want to consider getting a box with a lock on it that has a mail slot for deliveries to keep your mail more secure.

Another place identity thieves target is the trash can. If you have any bank account information, credit card statements or other documents with sensitive information on them, run them through the shredder before tossing them out. You should also think twice about recycling your junk mail. If it looks like a credit card offer or anything else the least bit sensitive, shred it.

A final thing to consider is putting any items with sensitive information on them away when someone is visiting, even if you love and trust the visitor. You don’t want to find out about someone’s new life of crime the hard way.

Do you have any tips for things you can do at home to protect your identity?

  • How Monsanto Used Gene Patents To Corner The Market In Seeds

Dark Helmet points us to the news of an Associated Press investigation into how Monsanto basically cornered the market in seeds by using gene patents and coercive licensing agreements that basically make it impossible to grow certain products without having to first reach a restrictive agreement with Monsanto. And they did this all in about a dozen years. Gene patents are already troubling enough, and reading this report on how Monsanto used its gene patents to basically wipe out all competition is quite telling in exactly how patents can be used to significantly harm a market. Of course, beyond the ridiculousness of gene patents, this situation has been made worse by the recent Supreme Court decision that said that Monsanto could put an end user license agreement on seeds, such that even if you collected seeds from your own harvest to replant them, you could be found guilty of infringing on Monsanto’s patents. The investigation here details how Monsanto basically has completely cornered the market, even limiting publicly funded research into certain seeds. And, of course, now the company is raising prices on various seeds when many farmers have little in the way of other options.

  • To All My Friends Here

    Hi Everyone!

Sorry I have been away….I want to say I have missed you all very much. I hope you all are having a good Christmas season.

My home was robbed and all of my electronics have been stolen. THey tried to pawn my stuff at a local pawn shop but the owner wouldn’t take it because they had fake INS cards. Anyhow between dealing with police, dealing with insurance company, dealing with continued medical stuff I AM PAST STRESSED OUT and we wont even talk about what my BG is doing. ( I have had several 600 plus readings and several under 40 readings).

If anyone has words of wisdom about how to get through this time I am open. Right now my motto is 1 foot in front of the other and do my best.

Anyhow that is what is up with me and when I get a new computer I will be back around. I will also check when I can on other computers.

  • HP iPAQ Glisten reviewed in detail

    hpglisten3

Pocketnow have published their full review of the HP Glisten. They note the device has good one handed use, many and programmable buttons, feels very secure in the hand due to its soft touch paint, has great battery life and has a good bit of ROM and RAM.

They note also however HP has done very little customization, including omitting even simple things such as activating Cleartype, making the QVGA screen look even worse, and did not even include any easy to access task manager. The camera was also not of the best quality and photos were very noisy.

    They concluded:

The iPAQ Glisten is a bare bones productivity device. It is in no way flashy or exciting, but it wasn’t intended to be. It’s a business device that has great battery life, terrific one-handed usability, and a great keyboard. If you’re a fan of the candybar QWERTY form factor, the Glisten will make you happy. But if you want a device that can do more than just communicate, you’re better off with a device like the AT&T Tilt 2.

    Pros

    Cons

  • Fantastic battery life
  • Great speakerphone
  • Excellent one-handed usability
  • Great keyboard
  • High build quality, solid in-hand feel
  • Clear call quality
  • Has a 3.5mm audio jack
  • Low resolution screen
  • No software enhancements included
  • Poor camera/camcorder
  • Poor multimedia experience
  • Must remove battery to swap microSD card

  • REPORT: VW would have to shift 100,000 Amarok pickups to justify bringing them to North America

Volkswagen Amarok – Click above for high-res image gallery

Want a new Volkswagen Amarok pickup truck? Well then, now would be the time to let VW know about your interest. Speaking to our man Mike Levine at PickupTrucks.com, Stefan Jacoby, President and CEO of Volkswagen of America, says that the automaker would need 100,000 takers per year in order to make any money on the Amarok here in the States.

That would be a daunting task for the automaker as the only non full-sized truck that sold that many units last year was the Toyota Tacoma (102,327 units), and the next highest seller was the the Great Grandaddy of the Compact Truck Segment, the Ford Ranger (just 51,097 units).

What’s more, the compact truck market is declining, VW doesn’t have many dealerships in truck-happy areas of the nation and the so-called “chicken tax” would add a 25% tariff to the Argentina-built Amarok. Add in the fact that Jacoby says there are more pressing vehicular needs that the German automaker needs to concentrate on. In other words… don’t get your hopes up.

  • Green Mayonnaise ~ Oh yeah!!!

I’ve read many recipes for green mayonnaise or mayonnaise verte but mine of course, is just a little different. My recipe doesn’t include a specific list of the green ingredients but rather allows you to individualize it to your own tastes and what you have in the refrigerator. It is a very versatile and utilitarian recipe because not only are there many ways to make it but there are many ways to use it as well. This green mayonnaise makes a flavorful dip for a crudites or for cold shrimp, a cold sauce to bathe your roasted chicken or fish in, an exciting new condiment for a sandwich or wrap and a spectacular and unexpected salad dressing. And it is so delicious on tomatoes. It is simply amazing on so many foods and can really liven up a simply cooked dish without packing on the carbs. So, have a look in your refrigerator and start pulling out all of your green ingredients. Think about the different flavor combinations with your ingredients and give this a try. I hope you enjoy.

    Green Mayonnaise

    Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups packed of any combination of the following:
    parsley
    tarragon
    chives
    basil
    dill
    cilantro
    scallions
leeks (not the dark green tops)
    watercress
    arugula
celery (tender inner stalks and leaves)
spinach (if you use frozen simply defrost and squeeze out the water)
green bell pepper (blanch and remove skin if desired)

    Plus:
    2 cups mayonnaise
1 cup Parmesan cheese, grated or shredded
1/2 lemon, juiced (or 1 lime juiced depending on greens used)
    1/2 tsp. Splenda
1/4 tsp. freshly ground black pepper

Rough chop green ingredients as needed. Place all of the ingredients in the bowl of a food processor and process until smooth. If you are using shredded cheese you may need a few extra pulses to reach a smooth consistency. Taste for seasoning and adjust if needed.

  • Dagi Transparent Stylus

Because my HD2 is away getting fixed, I can’t do videos/shots of this in action (which I’ll do when I get my HD2 back).

Generally, they’re very useful styli, the longer of the two to me is particularly useful as it can be kept in a jacket pocked with the clip (like a pen) and then used in the hand very comfortably (it feels just like a normal pen really). The smaller of the two I have is to my mind a little too small. I kept losing it in pockets. It does have a loophole for a strap or something, but that’s just adding to the bulk.

    Dagi Styli

Onto the usage side of things… In the wonderful crisp weather we’ve got in England, these are very useful with gloves. They’re large enough in diameter that they can be gripped well even in things like ski gloves, and would offer a lot more precision than prodding the screen with a gloved finger (if that actually worked).

Many people would love to be able to use these for high precision things like drawing. To a certain extent they do, but I can’t help thinking a more traditional stylus design might be more effective than the dot in the middle of a large circle for more precise taps. I’m not entirely sure how the technology works, but it must be possible to create a small tip rather than a large base.

The large base also has an interesting side effect, it means you have to hold the stylus at a certain angle to avoid tapping in the wrong place. This can occasionally get annoying, but it’s fairly easy to adapt to.IMGP4474

Using the styli as an extension to a finger rather than a very precise implement makes a little more sense, and makes typing a lot faster (you can see where you’re hitting rather than obscuring the screen with a finger) which makes it very useful in situations with either lots of typing, or hitting small UI elements (which are surprisingly hard to find on the HD2!).

Overall then, I think it’s a useful bit of kit to have, and I’d certainly recommend one if you want an alternative to fingers (or if you wear gloves), but they’re not as precise as I feel they could be..

BMW Concept ActiveE – Click above for high-res image gallery

Six months into its Mini E field test program, BMW is getting ready for phase two of its electric vehicle development. At the Detroit Auto Show next month, the Bavarian automaker will introduce its Concept ActiveE which brings electric drive to the Roundel. This time, instead of the diminutive Mini, these new teaser images suggest that a 1 Series coupe is set to go the plug-in route.

With the Mini E, BMW rushed to get the cars out into the field, recruiting AC Propulsion to produce the powertrains and battery packs comprised of laptop cells – a setup not unlike the Tesla Roadster. This time around, the car is much closer to what might be expected of a mass-produced electric car. BMW plans to build another fleet of EVs based on this concept, and once again, it will again put cars into the hands of ordinary drivers and fleets for more field testing. Read on after the jump for more details and the official press release.

  • Box-Container Dumper Unveiled by Flexicon

An all-new Box-Container Dumper from Flexicon forms a dust-tight seal between the container and the equipment, tips the container, and discharges bulk material through a chute at controlled rates.

Trademarked TIP-TITE™, the dumper accommodates Gaylords and other boxes, including truncated corner boxes, from 915 mm to 1220 mm on a side and 990 mm to 1117 mm overall height.

The container platform is raised by a single hydraulic cylinder, creating a dust-tight seal between the top edge of a box (or rim of a drum) and the underside of the containment hood.

Twin hydraulic cylinders then pivot the platform-hood assembly, with container intact, to either 45, 60 or 90 degrees beyond horizontal, including a motion-dampening feature at the termination of container rotation.

An optional, gasketted, top discharge gate actuated by twin pneumatic cylinders, provides a large opening with chute for the passage of non-free-flowing bulk solids that may otherwise bridge across smaller openings, and allows control of the material discharge.

The dumper is available constructed of stainless steel to food, dairy, pharmaceutical or industrial standards, and of mild steel with durable industrial coatings.

It is available with optional receiving hoppers configured with the company’s mechanical or pneumatic conveyors to transport discharged material to any plant location.

The company also manufactures drum dumpers, drum fillers, bulk bag dischargers, bulk bag conditioners, bulk bag fillers, bag dump stations, weigh batching and blending systems, and engineered plant-wide bulk handling systems with automated controls.

  • Congress Weighs Anti-Fracking Law That Could Demolish The Exxon-XTO Deal

    exxon ceo tillerson tbi

Despite Exxon’s announcement Monday that it will acquire XTO Energy, a major player in natural gas and unconventional shale, it’s still too early to celebrate the arrival of the natural gas era.
If Congress decides that hydraulic fracturing, aka fracking, contaminates underground drinking water, Exxon can back out of the deal.

WSJ.com: If Congress does act, a number of well-known companies – such as Chesapeake Energy, Petrohawk, Range Resources and Devon – could face an impact. Fracking involves pumping thousands and thousands of gallons of water mixed with sand and drilling fluids into dense rock formations.

Critics contend the practice can cause pollution, especially to drinking water, a charge the industry rejects.

  • Their take on health care: Sam Sperry and Duff Wilson

    Disgusted with hypocritical church leaders

As a Catholic, I loved Sam Sperry’s guest commentary on the need for Catholics to champion medical care for all, and not derail health-care reform over abortion [“Bishops take the low road on health-care reform,” Opinion, Dec. 10].

Sadly, Pastor Frank Schuster makes the counter-argument that by opposing health-care reform [“First Amendment rights for all,” Opinion, Northwest Voices, Dec. 15] if it covers a woman’s right to an abortion, bishops are being noble.

This stance, however, is hypocritical because it opposes lifesaving medical care for all, in favor of no abortions for a few.

If the leadership is so driven to support the dignity of human life, as Schuster says, then the church would have turned over for prosecution all priest pedophiles over the past decades rather than hide them, and then turned over those who hid them as accessories after a crime.

If any bishop wants to tell me I can’t receive Holy Communion because I support a woman’s right to choose, they can find me at St. Therese Parish, where I’ll be praying for their souls.

    — Mary Browning, Mercer Island

    Bishop’s conference violated the law

Frank Schuster’s defense of the Catholic bishops misses the point entirely. There is no doubt the Catholic Church is involved in myriad activities that better the lives of many. There is no doubt the church and its followers have a right to be against abortion. What is at issue is that the bishops have violated the rules that govern their nonprofit status.

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops is a 501c3 nonprofit. This allows them not only to be exempt from paying income tax, it also allows those who donate to them to deduct that amount from their own income tax as a charitable contribution. However, a 501c3 is, by law, prohibited from endorsing political candidates and from political lobbying.

In lobbying Congress to restrict women’s right to reproductive freedom, the conference violated the rules that govern their tax status. The IRS should change their status from a 501c3 to a 501c4 nonprofit. This would allow them to legally lobby Congress. It would, however, mean that donations to the conference of bishops would not be tax deductible.

The bishops have every right to free speech. They do not, however, have the right to enrich themselves financially by violating the law.

    — Thalia Syracopoulos, Seattle

Duff Wilson and the protection of children’s health

The article by Duff Wilson on the over-prescription of anti-depressants to Medicaid children was alarming [“Study: Medicaid kids given more antipsychotic drugs,” News, Dec. 12]. The focus, however, should not be on the quantity of prescription drugs, but on the quality of the care between the provider and child.

While discrimination exists and occurs at both the provider and the system levels of care, improving quality in the health-care system has been shown to reduce racial disparities in health. The Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), reauthorized by President Obama in February, began the first effort toward improving quality of care for low-income children. Yet in plans for health reform, the House bill eliminates CHIP. The Casey Amendment to the Senate bill gives CHIP a lifeline for the next 10 years so that these important quality reforms can be addressed.

Let us not throw the baby out with the bath water. The Children’s Alliance in Washington has successfully expanded health care for all children through CHIP, yet these efforts are threatened by a state and national crisis no child is responsible for.

Now is not the time to forget the work already completed, now is the time to remember, and forge a way ahead so that others may follow.

    — Robin Evans-Agnew, Seattle

Keeping our eyes on the prize

We must maintain focus on the goal of health-care reform [“Senate Dems appear ready to drop expanded Medicare for all,” News, Dec. 15]. One goal that has been accomplished to a greater extent by countries with less all over the world, is increased access for millions of hardworking Americans who currently lack any insurance at all.

The misguided behavior of some elected officials, in particular Sen. Joe Lieberman, in opposing reform that changes the operation of our system from one that lines the pockets of insurance company CEO’s with cash to one that improves the delivery of high-quality health care to our citizens must not be tolerated.

Our elected state and national officials have put in place protections for Washington citizens to ensure access. Others across the country are not as fortunate. We must stand together and demand change.

    — Emily Norland, Seattle
