  • Eco Architecture: JDS Architects propose sustainable zoo for Dochodo

    dochodo zoo_1

Eco Factor: Plan to develop a sustainable zoo with renewable energy harvesting capabilities.

JDS Architects have unveiled the design of a sustainable zoo they’re proposing to be built on the South Korean island of Dochodo. The architecture would serve as a tourist region where nature and structures function in equilibrium. The landscape is ideal for such a development, as it features natural peaks and valleys that could house animals and be treated as nature reserves.

  • VEVO Aims To Be The Hulu Of Music Videos

    59101354

VEVO is an online music video website owned by Sony Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group, EMI and Abu Dhabi Media Company. It is developed and hosted by YouTube, Sony, and Google. Google’s YouTube video service will host Universal content on the satellite website, making this the first time that YouTube hosts content off its main website. Through this partnership, Google and Universal will split ad revenues. It is expected to become the largest music oriented website on the Internet. Vevo is currently offering content from Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, EMI Music, Hollywood Records, Walt Disney Records, CBS Interactive Music Group, Big Machine Records, Concord Music Group, Lyric Street Records, ABKCO, Caroline Distribution, Fontana Distribution, INgrooves, IODA, RED and The Orchard, among many others.

A possible major reason behind the project is the competition that music videos have on YouTube. Warner Music Group apparently removed its content from YouTube in March 2009 for just this reason, but is said to be considering hosting its content on this new service. The concept for the site is described as being a Hulu for music videos and the plan may have arisen from the goal of attracting more high-end advertisers. Currently, it is believed that many advertisers are ambivalent to hosting advertising on YouTube’s site alongside user-generated video. In the future, the site could host more than just music videos, such as editorials, other types of videos, and user-generated content.

VEVO also has a nicely organized and often updated company blog featuring new content.

The photo above is CEO of Sony Music Entertainment & Co-Chairman of VEVO Rolf Schmidt-Holt speaking onstage at the launch of VEVO at Skylight Studio on December 8, 2009 in New York City. Check out dozens of other pictures from the VEVO launch at daylife featuring numerous big stars and major players in the music industry

  • White House Wants Input On Public Access Rules For Federally Funded Research

The Office of Science & Technology Policy remains one of the few White House operations that seems to actually have a good grasp on the internet and what it means for various other aspects of governance. That’s why it’s good to see them asking for input into what the administration should do in terms of requiring public access for federally funded research (thanks to Lee for sending this over). There’s been a big debate over this for years. Given that a significant portion of academic research is federally funded, it is immensely troubling that the results of much of that research is locked away in extremely expensive journals. There has been a good push over the years for requiring federally funded research to be accessible by the public, and OSTP is now looking for views into how to create policies that would achieve that goal. Who knows what will come out of it, but for those of you concerned about tax-payer-funded knowledge being locked up by private journals, now is your chance to comment in a way where (hopefully) the government will pay attention.

  • Candy Cane Sugar Cookies

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. That means it’s time to bake cookies! Instead of plain old sugar cookies, try these candy cake sugar cookies instead. Recipe and image courtesy of BHG.com.

    Makes: 6 to 7 dozen, 2-inch or 4 dozen, 4-inch cookies

    Prep: 30 minutes
    Chill: 30 minutes
    Bake: 7 minutes per batch

    Candy Cane Sugar Cookies

    Ingredients:

    • 2/3 cup butter, softened
    • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
    • 1 teaspoon baking powder
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt
    • 1 egg
    • 1 tablespoon milk
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla
    • 2 cups all-purpose flour
    • 1 recipe Powdered Sugar Icing* and/or 1 recipe Creamy White Frosting (optional)
    • Creamy White Icing
    • Sanding sugar and/or small hard peppermint candies
    • Red food coloring (optional)

    Directions:

    1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. In a large mixing bowl beat butter on medium to high speed for 30 seconds. Add granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt. Beat until combined, scraping sides of bowl occasionally. Beat in egg, milk, and vanilla until combined. Beat in as much of the flour as you can with the mixer. Stir in any remaining flour. Divide dough in half. If necessary, cover and chill dough about 30 minutes or until easy to handle.

    2. On a lightly floured surface, roll half the dough at a time to 1/8 inch thick. Use a 2-or 4-inch candy-cane-shape cookie cutter to cut dough. Place cutouts 1 inch apart on an ungreased cookie sheet.

    3. Bake for 7 to 8 minutes or until edges are firm and bottoms are very lightly browned. Transfer to a wire rack and let cool. If desired, tint part of the Powdered Sugar Icing and/or Creamy White Frosting bright red with food coloring; decorate cookies with white and red icing and/or frosting, sanding sugar, and candies. Makes 6 to 7 dozen, 2-inch or 4 dozen, 4-inch cookies.

*Powdered Sugar Icing: In a small bowl combine 2 cups powdered sugar, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla, and 2 tablespoons milk. Stir in additional milk 1 teaspoon at a time until icing reaches desired consistency.

*Creamy White Frosting: In a large mixing bowl beat 1 cup shortening, 1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla, and 1/2 teaspoon of almond extract with an electric mixer on medium speed for 30 seconds. Slowly add in about half of the 4 cups of powdered sugar, beating well. Add 2 tablespoons of milk. Gradually beat in the remaining 2 cups of powdered sugar and 1-3 tablespoons more milk to reach spreading consistency.

To Store: Place undecorated cookies in an airtight container; cover. Store at room temperature for up to 3 days, or place in a freezer container and store for up to 3 months. Thaw frozen cookies before decorating. Or, allow decorated cookies to stand until completely set. Layer decorated cookies between sheets of waxed paper in an airtight container. Store in refrigerator up to 3 days or freeze up to 3 months.

  • Making Green Business the New Business As Usual

For 20 years, Environmental Defense Fund has partnered with businesses to achieve ambitious environmental goals. Our blend of science and economics challenges companies to:

    • become more efficient,
    • create new business models and
    • transform their industries through environmental innovation.

Our credibility in the corporate sector has heightened our ability to deliver results. In a recent Financial Times study of 850 business-nonprofit partnerships, EDF was ranked as the top environmental partner globally.

In 2010, we will continue to transform industry sectors through direct partnerships and will grow our Innovation Exchange, a powerful new online community dedicated to promoting rapid and widespread adoption of environmental innovation throughout corporate America.

Breakthrough: Creating a green innovation community

Our Innovation Exchange is a first-of-its-kind online community designed to help companies large and small make green business the new business as usual. Covering industry sectors from financial to agriculture to health care to real estate, the Exchange is designed to engage businesses across the nation in cutting-edge sustainability practices.

The Exchange translates two decades of EDF’s work into a comprehensive set of recommendations, case studies, publications and tools to help companies reduce their environmental footprints and operate more efficiently. It also creates an open forum where companies can share ideas, collaborate on new innovations and work across sectors in nontraditional ways.

Success story: Tomorrow’s leaders making a difference today

EDF’s Climate Corps is a Peace Corps-like program that matches MBA students with companies seeking to reduce their environmental footprint. Working on site with host companies for the summer, Climate Corps students are tasked with recommending, and in some cases implementing, solutions to cut energy use and reduce the companies’ global warming pollution.

In 2009 the program matched 26 students with 23 companies and delivered extraordinary results. Identified energy savings could power 14,000 homes, potential greenhouse gas reductions would be equivalent to taking 12,000 SUVs off the road and could save the companies more than $54 million.

    Corporate Partnerships Goals for 2010

Transforming Walmart’s supply chain. As China’s eighth-largest trading partner, Walmart is uniquely positioned to lead the world in environmentally friendly manufacturing practices. Working with EDF, Walmart has established specific targets for energy efficiency, water reductions and other environmental improvements within its suppliers in China.

Helping Walmart meet those targets will be one of our main priorities. Walmart will begin its efforts by working with its top 200 Chinese suppliers of plastics, ceramics, glass and textiles to adopt process changes over the course of the year that will reduce their energy and water consumption by at least 10%.

Creating greener vehicle fleets. Building on our pilot program with fleet manager PHH Arval, EDF has designed a Green Fleet Framework that provides fleet managers with the tools to measure their emissions, set goals for reductions, improve vehicle selection and maintenance and train drivers in more efficient driving practices. Numbering over 10 million on the road, fleet vehicles are a major source of global warming pollution.

EDF will work to spread the rapid adoption of fleet greenhouse gas management through expanded outreach both online and on the ground.

Expanding Climate Corps. Building on the success of our Climate Corps program, we are working to enroll 50 host companies for the summer of 2010. By providing companies with clear, results-oriented information on energy efficiency, our Climate Corps program is helping companies reduce their environmental footprint while saving money and creating future business leaders who understand the intersection between profit and planet.

  • Bowl Predictions

And now, regular reader Foster Keats gives his predictions AND renames the various bowls to his own anti-establishment liking:

It’s bowl season, my friends. Time to put those novels down, send the wives & kids to bed, and hunker down with non-stop football every day & night of the week until early January. • Sony NWZ-S745 16GB Walkman For Sale In Canada – Is USA Next?

    sseries

Sony has really confused me with their Walkman strategy in 2009 – the consistency is available models is simply confusing. In Japan (and most of Asia Pacific), Sony is offering their most advanced line up to date with the latest A and S series models to compliment its E, W and X series offerings. In Europe, Sony offers the B, E, S, W and X series – the S series is the lower end model with a built in speaker. In the USA, Sony offers the E, S (same as Europe), W, and X series. However, it appears that SonyStyle Canada is breaking the mold and offering the more advanced S series that is only available in Asia Pacific – the NWZ-S745.

Is it possible that Sony will introduce this model for US consumers during CES? It’s hard to tell, but it seems possible. If not, perhaps later in the Spring. The NWZ-S745 is the most feature rich S series to date, with a 2.0″ QVGA LCD, noise canceling technology, video out (SD only and a low resolution), clear bass/clear stereo, and satisfying codec support. It is more interesting to me than the current S series Walkman available in the USA, which has somewhat powerful built-in speakers, good storage capability, but has mostly average features.

    Thanks, Anything But iPod.

  • Need your opinions

My bg has been much better lately. I am ranging between 106 – 160. First I want to say I will not go off my meds until I talk to my Dr. I will check my bg everyday.

On Saturday I ate a good breakfast. My bg was around 115 before lunch. I took lettuce put turkey peperoni, black olives, peperjack cheese and a pickle slice and rolled it up and that was my lunch. I made 2 of them. They were really good. About 20 min later my sugar dropped suddenly. I got sick in the stomach, shakey, dizzy and I knew my # was low. I did not test it right away but I ate a chocolate bar then a bun because I felt so bad I wanted to get my sugar up quick. I tested it about 15 later and it was 84 so I know I must have went pretty low.

What I was considering was to stop the meds(with my dr’s okay) and try doing it with diet alone. It seems lately with the meds I have to eat more carbs or I go hypo. I also will eat something I shouldn’t and think it’s okay the Meds will take my BG back down.

Please don’t respond with my toes will fall off if I go off the meds. I am still taking them. I just want some opinions. I know there are some T2’s that do it without meds. It feels like I will use the meds so I can eat want I want. I don’t want to do that but I am really struggling with the food thing. I was really scared when my BG was up in the 400’s and I don’t want to return to that. I think I need a big push again to stop the binge eating. The high #’s were a start but now I feel my old habits want to come back because I have meds and my dr would increase it if my BG goes higher.

  • Longleat Hedge Maze

    England, U.K. | Mazes

Added to the historic grounds in 1975, the Longleat Hedge Maze is the largest of several mazes on the property. The maze is constructed of more than 16,000 English yews and is the longest (but not the largest ) hedge maze in the world, covering 1.48 acres, and 1.69 miles of pathway. It is a full scale maze, with several dead end and multiple paths punctuated by six raised bridges, all of which surrounds a central tower.

The maze is part of the 8000 acres that have been the home of the Marquesses of Bath since 1541. 900 of those acres were landscaped by the famous landscape designer Capability Brown, who also had a hand in the grounds of Alnwick Castle (now home to the Alnwick Poison Gardens ). The property includes a slew of unusual features, not least of which is the Safari Park of exotic animals that has been open to the public since 1966. Designed as the first drive-through safari park, where the over 500 wild animals could roam freely. According to the Safari Park web site: “Despite the understandable initial concerns of locals with regard to the introduction of lions to Wiltshire, the Safari Park concept has been a great success and Longleat’s ground-breaking innovation has been repeated at wildlife collections all over the world.”

The land is currently owned by the 7th Marquess of Bath, Alexander Thynn, known primarily for his eccentric lifestyle, numerous mistresses, and the erotic murals he has painted all over the residential portion of the house. He is also a great lover of mazes, and has added the hedge maze, as well as three other smaller garden mazes: the Lunar labyrinth, the Sun Maze, King Arthur’s maze, and the Love Labyrinth.

The historic house, gardens, hedge maze and safari park are open to visitors.

  • Russia and U.S. Talk Internet Security

The United States has begun planning talks with Russia and a United Nations arms control committee to strengthen Internet security and limit military use of cyberspace. American and Russian officials have very different interpretations of the talks so far, but the simple fact that the United States is even participating represents a significant policy shift after years of rejecting Russia’s overtures. Officials familiar with the talks say that the Obama administration realized more nations were developing cyberweapons, and that a new approach was needed to blunt an international arms race.

In the past two years, Internet-based attacks on government and corporate computer systems have increased to thousands a day. Seldom ever identified hackers have been credited with compromising Pentagon computers, stealing industrial secrets and temporarily jamming government and corporate Web sites. President Obama ordered a review of the nation’s Internet security policies in February and is preparing to name an official to coordinate a national policy.

Russian officials have stated that increasing challenges posed by military activities to civilian computer networks would be best dealt with by an international treaty, similar to treaties that have limited the spread of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons. The United States had always resisted, arguing that it was impossible to draw a line between the commercial and military uses of software and hardware. Recently, people familiar with the discussions say there has been a thaw. Courtesy of nytimes.com

  • teen daughter

I have 14 year old daughter with T1 (since 7 years/old) and is now on the Omnipod for over 1 year. My question to any of you that remember your teen years….or maybe still are one. This past year she has not been wanting to deal with her diabetes very well. Sometimes I will see NO BG checks at all and a few days NO boluses…only basal. She is very active in sports and is a 4.0 student. I just can’t seem to convince her she needs to do better for her own health.

She goes to a Children’s Endo and that Endo on last visit said she is going to have her take a break from the Omnipod if this next visit does not show her doing at least 3 BG checks/day and 3 bolus/day minimum. WELL…her appt is about 1.5 months away and know she will not have 3 and 3. She says she does not want to go back to shots..but is not doing what she can to avoid it.

Any feedback or suggestions of how I can help her would be great. I don’t like nagging…but I do remind her a lot to check:)

    Thanks!

  • No, Shareholders Don’t Get To Sue Heartland Just Because It Leaked More Data Than Anyone Else

Last year, Heartland Payment Systems, leapt into the lead as being the company with the largest data breach of all time (well, that we know of), when it potentially leaked the personal info on somewhere over 100 million people. As typically happens in these sorts of things, a shareholder lawsuit was quickly filed from bummed out shareholders pissed off that the stock dropped (like off a cliff) following the announcement. But, of course, for there to be liability it takes a lot more than just the stock to drop, so it comes as little surprise that the lawsuit has been tossed, as the court said there was no evidence that Heartland execs knew their data was exposed. Friendly reminder to litigious shareholders: just because the company screws something up, it doesn’t mean you get to sue.

  • What Do You Do for a Child’s Broken Heart?

Recently I came across a letter my daughter wrote to a boy, now at the time I did not know what this was.  She had asked me if I’d read her story, so once the kids were gone I went in and found it on her bed.  Once I began reading it I wondered what she was trying to do and then it dawned on me that this was not her story and instead it was a letter to a boy that had broke her heart.

    IMG: Sxc.hu

    IMG: Sxc.hu

Without going into too many details, this letter showed me that she has a low self-esteem of herself and the way she looks. It broke my heart to read these words and to remember back then and think of how she was feeling. I remembered how those first crushes could be and how much feelings hurt when things didn’t turn out. Now this happened this past Thursday, I’ve yet to tell her. I mean what do you say? Sure, I didn’t mean to read it, I’d tried reading her story. But it is like reading a diary, just not something you do.

I did inform her dad on Friday afternoon, before she came home. We decided he’d do a father daughter day with her and show her how much he cares. The two went shopping, walking the mall, shopping, got her ears pierced and finally her nails polished. When she got home I had ice cream waiting for everyone, just because it was Friday.
