Despite being hobbled by front-wheel drive, the Maxima SV Sport can hold its own on the bi-ways and backroads. But at what cost?
We’ve seen plenty of supercar start-ups come and go, but Kepler Motors appears to have the right stuff with its carbon fiber, Ecoboost-powered Motion coupe.
Following the release of the Chevrolet Volt theme song, GM tapped a handful of dancers to perform an accompanying two-step at the LA Auto Show. And yes, it’s bad.

This was the topic of hot discussion in the McSuderman household this morning. If Lieberman really wants health care reform but is (as he is supposed to, I reluctantly concede) protecting his state’s insurance interests, then all the progressives need to do is say “Give us the list! Whatever you want, you can have it!” The problem is that
a) Reid’s apparently seriously pissed off and not acting particularly rationally
b) Lieberman already knows he’s going to lose his committees the minute the Democrats don’t need him next year and
c) Since it’s not clear that he actually wants anything to pass, there’s a serious worry that he’ll just dance away and make more demands.
But it’s not just Lieberman. I doubt Blanche Lincoln actually wants to vote for this thing, but she needs the party for reelection help in a tough race coming up, so she’s perfectly willing to let Nelson and Lieberman kill it if they can. If they get on board, I suspect that Lincoln might develop sudden last minute doubts. I’m not sure Landrieu wouldn’t as well. Conservative Democrats facing tough reelections do not actually want to have to go on record as voting either before or against this.
Lieberman is in some ways in the easiest position–the party is not helping him get reelected, and he’s going to lose his committees eventually anyway, because everyone’s mad at him. So the other weak sisters are willing to let him take the lead. But if he gives in, will they go along, or will they just find their own reasons for saying no?

The original pattern for this project was made with mittens, but I couldn’t find the right size so with a needle and thread and a couple of stitches I made this snowman pair from gloves. They really look cute, too. Now let me tell you haw to make your own Mr. and Mrs. Snowman gloves/mittens.
Kathy Zengolewicz
You can do this with mittens or gloves. If you use gloves you’ll need to turn the glove inside out and stitch up the index, middle and ring finger, leaving the pinky finger and thumb to stuff.
If you plan to hang these ornaments you don’t have to use the rice, but if you want them to stand on their own fill about half of the glove/mitten bottom with rice. Fill the rest of the glove with the polyfil and make sure to push the filling into the finger and thumb. Stuff the body and fingers tightly.
Glue the wooden head to the top of the glove where the fingers are sewn. Hold it there for a few minutes until it drys. Cut a small piece of fabric to use as a hat for the Mr. and glue it to his head.
For the Mrs., glue a few tresses of doll hair to the center of her head. Glue a pompom to the sides where her ears would be, these are her earmuffs.
Glue buttons on the Mrs. and add a small Christmas tree for the Mr. to hold. If your snowman isn’t standing right you can also glue a large button to the bottom of the body, that will make it a little sturdier.
You can use a black pencil to draw the eyes and a red pencil for the mouth and cheeks. I used a little bit of acrylic paint, but you can use what you have. That’s all there is to it, now you have your own Mr. and Mrs. Snowman. Enjoy!

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is nothing if not an exciting car to drive, and the German automaker is reportedly hard at work making sure that the upcoming electric version of the supercar generates the same kind of reaction from its occupants. In an interview with Autocar, AMG head Volker Mornhinweg assures that the EV super coupe is now being tested on the road and will hit all of its targeted performance objectives.
The electric M-B SLS AMG will sport four individual electric motors that spin out 525 horsepower and 649 pound-feet of torque through all four wheels. That’s enough grunt to push the gullwinged-supercar from 0 to 60 in four seconds flat. Three separate lithium ion battery packs will assure a range of 110 miles, though all those cells will push weight all the way up to a hefty 4,100 pounds – a full 500 pounds more than the gas-powered version.
If you’re worried that all those extra pounds will make for a boring drive, don’t be. “Effectively being four-wheel-drive does alter its character, but our torque vectoring systems give us opportunities to make it as good,” affirms Mornhinweg. “It’s important to get the emotional level of an EV right and we have some solutions.” We’ll have to wait until 2013 to find out for ourselves, at which time the SLS EV will hit the market, possibly for lease only with an unknown asking price.

Synaptics today introduced Fuse™, a collaborative mobile phone concept, demonstrating the future of user interaction for handsets. Integrating for the first time multiple interface technologies—including multi-touch capacitive sensing, haptic feedback, 3-D graphics, and force, grip, and proximity sensing—the Fuse concept phone showcases exciting new mobile device usage models. In addition, Fuse demonstrates to device manufacturers the value of ecosystem collaborations providing a model for designing multi-modal interfaces that will optimize the user experience on next-generation handheld device. Every step in the value chain affects and is affected by the end product. A truly collaborative approach takes advantage of each partner’s unique contributions in benefiting the user.
Beyond Today’s Touchscreen
Fuse extends the now-prevalent touchscreen-based user experience first unveiled in August 2006 with Synaptics’ award-winning Onyx mobile concept. With Fuse’s bold lineup of innovative interface technologies, Synaptics and partners tackle the difficulty of single-handed usage and the need to look at the screen—two key challenges faced by on-the-go users in current-generation touchscreen phones.
Fuse’s innovative sensing technologies surrounding the entire device enable quick, intuitive, single-handed navigation. For example, grip sensing achieved via force and capacitive touch sensors on the sides of the phone allows the user to execute common controls such as pan and scroll. In addition to the novel side sensors, Fuse introduces for the first time, 2D navigation from the back of the phone. This feature offers yet another mode of effective and fun single-handed control without obstructing the display or enhanced usability, Fuse combines multiple sensory input and feedback technologies including active 3-D graphics and next-generation haptic effects.
“Consumers have many options when it comes to choosing a smartphone, and though many phones are loaded with applications to simplify one’s life, they often accomplish just the opposite,” said William Stofega, research manager for mobile device technology and trends at IDC. “Synaptics partnering with innovative industry leaders to deliver an intelligent concept device that has the consumers’ lifestyles in mind will help showcase the true potential of the smartphone.”
Collaborative Design
The Fuse mobile phone concept is the result of a unique collaboration between Synaptics and four global partners—TheAlloy, The Astonishing Tribe (TAT), Immersion, and Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI). With human interface and digital lifestyle in mind, the Fuse design team created a stunning and functional user interface with innovative new modes of sensing input, and visual and haptic feedback.
Each partner provided valuable expertise and contributions to the project:
Additionally, Synaptics’ ClearPad™, NavPoint™, and TouchButtons™ solutions are used in the Fuse mobile concept to offer unique capabilities—such as two-finger input, proximity sensing, grip sensing, text entry, and high-resolution finger input—providing precise pointing and navigation that can dramatically improve and enhance the user experience with a touchscreen.
Future handset innovation will rely on the relationship between technology design and designers to unlock the potential of mobile phones as an ideal computing platform. Fuse illustrates to OEMs the advances in Synaptics’ sensing technologies and the collaborative effort that will inspire a new wave of multi-modal input design.
“The best touch experience requires the expertise and collaboration of ecosystem leaders to optimize what the user sees and feels,” said Gopal Garg, senior vice president of Synaptics’ handheld business unit and corporate marketing. “The improved sensory experience of Fuse will drive handset innovation to evolve, taking the current generation of touch-based interaction to the next level of human-device interaction.”
“The Fuse project has demonstrated the power of multi-party collaboration to deliver experience-led innovation, said Gus Desbarats, chairman, TheAlloy. “Each partner within the Fuse project has helped to show the effect that leading-edge technology can deliver when applied with design thinking.”
“Exceptional user experience differentiates the best designs,” said Craig Vachon, senior vice president and general manager of Immersion’s touch line of business. “Fuse exemplifies the power of collaboration and realizes what is possible by integrating innovative technology, including Immersion’s next-generation TouchSense solutions. Working with these partners has been gratifying; Fuse is further validation that our haptics technology brings to life the power of touch and makes devices more intuitive, satisfying, and fun to use.”
“Providing our technology in order to showcase user experience paradigms of next generation devices is one of the key ingredients that keep TAT ahead of the trends in mobile user interfaces”, says Charlotta Falvin, chief executive officer of The Astonishing Tribe. “Realizing design ideas that push the limits of technology like the Fuse UI does is one of our passions.”
“The world is changing, and so is the way people interact with their mobile devices. TI is excited to be a part of the innovative Fuse concept that reiterates the significant headway we’re making to advance mobile user experiences,” said Fred Cohen, director of worldwide ecosystem partners for Texas Instruments. “TI’s OMAP platform works in sync with these other impressive technologies to bring big-screen, life-like capabilities to consumers’ fingertips.”
Fuse will be demonstrated during CES in Las Vegas at the Synaptics, Immersion, and TI meeting areas, and at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February.

So, I just did a Bayer A1CNOW home test. This is the first A1C I’ve done since discontinuing the metformin completely. My last A1C from a lab was 5.1, and that was after a month of doing VERY low carb (averaging MAYBE 15g total carbs per day).
Home A1C test result today: 5.0.
At first, I was excited, but then I came here and read some past threads about the accuracy of the home tests. When I started reading, I thought I was in a good position because it seemed that, for most people whose Bayer home test was NOT accurate, the home test was actually higher than the lab test (which would mean my actual A1C could be even lower if my home test was not correct). But then I found a few whose experience was the opposite. So who knows!
I need to get back to testing more regularly, and I need to save my next home A1C test for a day when I’m going to have one drawn at the lab as well so I can compare!

The pieces to the puzzle that is the upcoming Formula One season are coming together bit by bit. In the latest development, the upstart Lotus F1 Racing team has announced the signing of two veteran drivers: Jarno Trulli and Heikki Kovalainen.
A former Monaco Grand Prix race winner, Trulli has driven for five different teams over the course of the past twelve years on the grid. Speculation was that he could switch to NASCAR following a recent test with Michael Waltrip Racing, particularly as the Toyota team for which he’d been driving for the past six years announced its withdrawal from the series. Finnish driver Kovalainen, meanwhile, is also a former race winner, left without a ride when McLaren replaced him with reigning world champion Jenson Button. Local aspirant Fairuz Fauzy, formerly of Malaysia’s A1GP team, will serve as reserve/test driver.
The announcement was made by Malaysia’s prime minister, whose government is backing the team. Although the outfit has no direct ties with the automaker of the same name – save for mutual patronage by Malaysia’s state-run Proton – the British sportscar-maker and engineering firm could buy into the team at some point in the future as part of its comprehensive racing plan, giving Lotus the kind of operation Ferrari has run for decades.
With the Lotus drivers in place and Force India having recently confirmed the retention of Adrian Sutil and Tonio Liuzzi, the 2010 grid is rapidly taking form. The only remaining seats are with Mercedes/Brawn GP (which has yet to announce Nico Rosberg‘s team-mate as speculation intensifies over Michael Schumacher’s return), Renault (which has yet to announce a wingman for Robert Kubica as the team’s future remains in question), Sauber (which was only recently approved for next season), Toro Rosso, Campos Meta (which has announced only Bruno Senna), Virgin/Manor (which has confirmed only Timo Glock so far) and USF1.

If you’re planning on boarding your dog over the holidays, make sure your pet has been vaccinated for kennel cough (infectious tracheobronchitis). It’s highly contagious and your best friend may be more vulnerable when stressed.
Bordetella bacteria can cause kennel cough, or it may develop as a secondary infection with a virus. The viruses that cause kennel cough include canine distemper, canine adenovirus 2 and canine parainfluenza.

Dogs that have been exposed to kennel cough may exhibit symptoms five to 10 days later. Symptoms include a dry cough that sounds loud and may be worse after activity. Dogs infected with kennel cough sometimes gag after coughing. The cough, whether constant or periodic, is usually the only sign of kennel cough. Coughing will sound worse for the first week, but gradually get better, leaving completely within three weeks.
If kennel cough becomes very severe, dogs may suffer appetite loss and subsequent weight loss. If you suspect your dog has kennel cough, describe your dog’s symptoms to your vet, including information about the potential source of exposure.
Treatment for kennel cough often includes medicine to suppress cough. In some cases, dogs may need antibiotics to improve. To avoid complications like pneumonia or secondary infections, your dog should receive prompt treatment. Find out more about kennel cough with The Humane Society kennel cough fact sheet.

Hiroshima survivor Keiji Nakazawa’s graphic testimony continues in the penultimate volume of the heart-wrenching Barefoot Gen series, finally available in an unabridged English translation of all 10 volumes from San Francisco’s renegade publisher Last Gasp. Alone and newly homeless, Nakazawa’s fictionalized stand-in, Gen Nakaoka, moves in with his motley group of survivor friends, together creating a family bound together by both tragedy and promise.
Natsue prepares for her own death by creating the perfect jar for her ashes which Gen purposefully breaks in hopes of keeping her alive a little longer. But the sheer will of her friends cannot help the ailing Natsue and she quickly succumbs. In the midst of chasing a would-be robber during her memorial, Gen meets an older, caring artist who proves to be the perfect mentor in Gen’s promising new job with a sign-painting company.
In spite of all the horrors he has faced in his young life, Gen is filled with hope as he looks on at a beautiful rainbow, “thinking how wonderful it would be if he could build beautiful rainbow bridges from country to country, in a world without borders … a peaceful world free of war, where people cross freely over those rainbow bridges and talk to each other as friends …”
More than half a century later, war still remains too much a part of our everyday vocabulary. Bringing Barefoot Gen back onto bookshelves everywhere is certainly a necessary reminder for peace, most especially for the sake of all our world’s children.

It’s no secret that the American criminal justice system is “grossly inefficient and morally unacceptable,” as has been documented here before. In the latest American Prospect, Adam Serwer artfully peels back the layers of failure, and surveys the landscape for change:
In the 1980s and 1990s — the “tough on crime” era — -incarceration was touted as the simple solution to our crime problem. Today, the United States imprisons 1 percent of its entire population. Including the number of people on probation and parole, one in 31 Americans is under supervision of the criminal-justice system. Mass incarceration has succeeded in reducing crime, but the strategy has diminishing returns. The offense rate of the top 20 percent of offenders is more than 10 times that of the average prisoner — a few very active criminals commit most of the crime. But under the current system, offenders who could be more cheaply deterred or rehabilitated instead incur the most expensive — and, from the perspective of its effect on the community, damaging — form of punishment possible. This is why, even as the number of incarcerated people has increased exponentially, crime hasn’t decreased at the same rate.
One of the major reasons why Blu-ray is still struggling to catch on (despite winning the long drawn out victory over competing format HD-DVD) is that you’re extremely limited in what you can do with Blu-ray content. In an era when people are used to being able to move content and time- and place-shift it at will, Blu-ray is quite limiting. This has become a growing concern to those in Hollywood who thought Blu-ray was going to be its savior. Unfortunately, the response is being equally bungled by Hollywood. The key concept is the idea of “managed copies,” which (in theory) will let users make limited DRM’d copies for time- and place-shifting.
Of course, that assumes that the offering actually works. And right now it’s nearly impossible to tell. Jerry Leichter alerts us to a story of one small studio that’s trying to implement “managed copy” offerings and is finding it to be nearly impossible. The instructions on how to do it are not at all clear, and the studio is not getting much in the way of help from those behind the standard. Furthermore, there’s simply no way to test to see if they’re doing it right, since there’s no equipment that can handle managed copies yet. And this is from a studio, Scenic Labs, that believes DRM is pointless and “piracy is going to happen.” So why is it even bothering? It basically has no choice. If you’re creating commercial Blu-ray discs, this is the only option you get: it must include this poorly documented DRM if you want to offer a copyable version.
Of course, there is one alternative. As the head of the studio notes, if they screwed up the process, they have no interest in remastering the discs, so they’ll just ask buyers to send a cameraphone photo of the purchased DVD, and they’ll send them a digital file over the internet.

We do more then food and furniture… We are also a clothing and computer bank, and the only one of it’s kind in Canada that does all of these.
We also offer life skills courses and basic IT courses for those getting back into the work place, and every Christmas we do up a dinner that includes everything you need to cook a nice meal at home. Plus we give toys to the kids.
This year we are doing up just over 900 Christmas boxes to be picked up, or delivered. The media covers it every year, and it’s a nice event. In fact myself, and usually my brother pass the turkeys off the back of one of our trucks. I can post a pic of us as well so you can all laugh. 😀
We also provide oil support for those who are having a hard time heating their homes.
Most of our funding we raise ourselves, or comes in via private donations. We don’t receive any government assistance.
I want to post the link to our website, and if you could maybe pass it along to friends and family, and if they would like to make a donation we have several options.
I hope this isn’t considered spam, because there is no profit to be gained here and I get nothing, and it will help people have a decent Christmas this year.
I am kind of going out on my own doing this, and haven’t run it by anyone at work. I have alot of flexibility tho, and I am sure the boss won’t mind, as long as the staff here is okay with it.
If not, of course I would understand if the thread is removed.

They’re crunchy, meltable, and oh-so pair-able. We’re talking about Gruyere, Appenzeller, Comte, and Emmenthaler, to name a few. Mountain cheeses come up pretty often in our cheesemonger posts, probably because they’re some of the most delicious.
But we’ve never flushed out what exactly they are, or why they’re called mountain cheeses in the first place. If you’re interested in cheese, it’s an important style to know about.
