  • Weather Activities for Kids

Youngsters usually enjoy the study of weather, reading about it, viewing videos, performing experiments and finding out why things happen, especially violent incidents like tornadoes and hurricanes.

    Enjoying the rain image: sxc.hu

During my substitute teaching recently, I spent three days with a second grade class,  and they were focusing on weather in reading, science, math, art  and writing.

We read Tomi de Paola’s The Cloud Book and discussed the various types of clouds described.  They drew pictures and did a math paper about clouds.  Then they began making a cloud booklet, using worksheets their teacher had provided.    Some of the students became so enthusiastic, they wanted to create their original cloud booklet when they had free time.

We watched a video on weather, learned about tornadoes and hurricanes, blizzards, frost and snowflakes and weather myths.  (A book we didn’t read, but which I would have used if the teacher had been out longer, is Snowflake Bentley by Jacqueline Briggs MartinThis is about the man who first photographed snowflakes.)  Some of the youngsters cut out snowflakes, an activity the art teacher also did with them later that day.

I found this unit so interesting that I’m developing  one to use with youngsters when I teach and to provide material for home schoolers.

  • Chinnappam( Appetizers – Crackers )

    Daily Random Recipe

    INGREDIENTS:

      • 400 g / 14 oz rice flour
      • 75 g / 3 oz shallots, peeled
      • 50 g / 2 oz grated or desiccated coconut
      • 2 t cumin seeds
      • 2 t black sesame seeds
      • Oil for frying
      • Salt

    METHOD:
In a large dry frying pan or wok, toast the rice flour over medium heat for 3-4 minutes, stirring constantly, until the flour turns golden. Remove from the heat and allow to cool.

Place the shallots, coconut and cumin seeds in a grinder or blender. Add 225 ml / 8 oz water and process the mixture for 2-3 until smooth and combined. Transfer the toasted rice flour to a large bowl and make a well in the centre. Add the coconut mixture and, using a wooden spoon, work the liquid into the flour until you have a thick, bread like dough. Add more water if necessary.

Take small amounts of the dough and shape them into balls the size of a large marble. Using your palms, flatten them into small discs and lay them out on a work surface. Continue until all the dough is used.

Heat some oil in a deep-fryer, wok or large, heavy saucepan (the oil should be 1/2 inch / 1.3 cm or so deep). When it’s hot, fry the chinnapam a few at a time for 2-3 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from the oil and drain on kitchen paper.

    Allow to cool before serving.

    NOTES:
This is a small dry snack, almost like a savoury biscuit, that can be served at the beginning of a meal or as a snack.

  • Musician Chases Down Google Street View Car To Promote His Music

Via Blaise we learn of a musician in Saskatoon, who heard that Google was going to be adding Saskatoon to its “Street View” efforts, and decided he was going to figure out a way to promote himself via Google Street View. He bought a sign with his band’s name, and kept it in his car. He told all his friends to be on the lookout for the Google Street View car, and to alert him, but he actually spotted it himself while eating lunch one day. After following it around for a bit, he figured out the pattern the car was driving in, and set himself up a little ways ahead and was photographed. He dashed ahead again, and got photographed a second time as well:

But here’s the thing: his face is blurred out due to pressure from various governments to “protect” people’s privacy from Google Street View. So this raises an obvious question: what do you do if you want to be seen on Google Street View, rather than blurred, and your government has taken away that ability?

Scrap Cap and Trade: EPA Do Your Job!

This week, we share two great videos that explain what’s gone wrong with Congress’s climate change bill and why letting greenhouse gas polluters make money off their hot air, i.e., cap and trade, is a bad idea.

We urge you take action in support of EPA’s recent, long overdue announcement that it will henceforth consider and regulate greenhouse gases for what they are – hazardous pollutants that represent a threat to our global climate and indeed all life on the Earth.

La Via Campesina – A Global Small Farmer Network – Leave Farms for Copenhagen

Excerpt from speech of Henry Saragih, general coordinator of Via Campesina at the opening session of Klimaforum:

&quot New data that has come out clearly shows that industrial agriculture and the globalized food system are responsible for between 44 and 57% of total global greenhouse gas emissions. This figure can be broken down as follows:

    (i) Agricultural activities are responsible for 11 to 15%,

(ii) Land clearing and deforestation cause an additional 15 to 18%,

(iii) Food processing, packing and transportation cause 15 to 20%, and

(iv) Decomposition of organic waste causes another 3 to 4%.

It means that our current food system is a major polluter. If we genuinely want to tackle the climate change crisis, the only way we have to go forward is to stop industrial agriculture.

Carbon trade mechanisms will only serve polluting countries and companies, and bring disaster to small farmers and indigenous peoples in developing countries.

By taking agriculture away from the big agribusiness corporations and putting it back into the hands of small farmers, we can reduce half of the global emissions of greenhouse gases. This is what we propose, and we call it Food Sovereignty…&quot

    Zero Waste for Zero Warming

More Compost, Less GHGs from Landfills

When composted and returned to the soil, organic matter provides multiple benefits. It locks carbon in soil improves the structure and workability of soils (reducing the need for fossil fuels for plowing and tilling) improves water retention (irrigation is a heavy consumer of energy) displaces energy-intensive synthetic fertilizers and results in more rapid plant growth (which takes CO2 out of the atmosphere).

But, when organic waste ends up in landfills, the organic content (paper, yard waste and food scraps) putrefies, producing methane (CH4), a greenhouse gas 20-70 times more potent and damaging than carbon dioxide (CO2).

    The Solution: Zero Waste

A far better approach is known as Zero Waste, which aims to close the loop on all material used in the economy. Under Zero Waste, each element of a source-separated waste stream is subjected to minimal treatment so that it can be reused. Clean, source-separated organics (including kitchen discards) are composted or subject to anaerobic digestion usable goods are repaired and re-used other materials are recycled.

Besides saving resources and money, and generating green jobs for local communities, Zero Waste produces far less pollution than so-called waste disposal techniques. It eliminates methane emissions from landfills by diverting organics it eliminates greenhouse gas emissions from incinerators by closing them it reduces greenhouse gas emissions from industry by replacing virgin materials with recycled materials and it reduces greenhouse gas emissions from transport by generally keeping such materials close to the end-user.

USDA Certified Organic Household Cleaners are Finally Here!

    Greenology Products has made history.

The word &quot natural&quot continues to remain undefined and is often confusing to consumers. Many manufacturers push the boundaries of what is truly considered natural. Because of this, Greenology Products spent 18 months developing a line of organic All-Purpose, Bathroom, Glass and Kitchen Cleaners that met NOP (National Organic Program) requirements and are certified by the USDA. We have recently won approval for the world’s first and only certified organic Laundry Detergent as well. It wasn’t easy, but we were on a mission to change the way cleaning products are produced and used by families and businesses.

Wanting to significantly raise the standards bar in cleaning was easy motivation for us because so much evidence points to chemical related health symptoms and poor indoor air quality at home, school and work.

As for performance, our Glass cleaner was given a &quot BEST&quot rating by the New York Times in a May 14th, 2009 review against 19 other national brand Glass cleaners. Not only are we certified organic, but the products work extremely well and are competitively priced against the national brands. It’s a win for consumers and families.

  • From 1nD up to more than 4nD! ARAGO, the Revolutionary Refractometer

Developed in collaboration with the French Institute of Petroleum, ARAGO is an instrument for physical-chemistry applications dedicated to the refractive index measurement in suspensions for analysis applications such as the characterization of absorbent, dark or concentrated samples.

    – The innovative design allows to widen the range of refractive index measurement (RI) from 1nD (air) to 4nD with a 10-4 accuracy. This new instrument, which presents the largest range of refractive index
measurements on the market allows to measure fluorated liquids refractive index (less than 1.3) and mercury’s refractive index (more than 1.7).

    – ARAGO is a great instrument for oils and greases with a high fusion point, aromated oils, high refractive index perfumes and organic solvents.

  • The latest 01dB-Metravib’s solution: LiveProd

After the recent presentation of a unique electrical analysis solution at the ATIP meeting, 01dB-Metravib’s OneProd team innovates once again in service development. This development meets a high demand for increased reliability of machines, for reduced and controlled maintenance costs, together with less hardware investment and shorter technical learning periods.
    01dB-Metravib’s solution has a name: it’s LiveProd.

Very simply, LiveProd allows implementing and using predictive maintenance with no dedicated resources: the OneProd team installs a data acquisition system on each site, which is customised to the needs of each company, and to the nature and criticality of the machines…
Then, the measurements are directly transferred to a centralised and secured database. 01dB-Metravib experts actually perform monitoring and issue diagnosis from this database. They provide the operator with clear recommendations for the maintenance of each machine under monitoring.
Very safely, this original solution allows maintenance management thus avoiding failures, while controlling expenses and benefiting from continuous support.
With absolute confidence, LiveProd is implemented with no investment: a simple monthly fee allows financing the measuring and analysis instruments, as well as the services provided by 01dB-Metravib’s experts.

01dB-Metravib, a subsidiary of AREVA, demonstrates here its innovating spirit in the domain of machine reliability, thus offering its customers simple and easily implemented solutions.

  • Waste Not, Want Not

So I’ve been cooking up a storm today, slicing, dicing, sauteeing, stewing, steaming, seasoning (Chef B, you’d be so proud of me 😀 ) and then I go and do it while slicing zucchini – I cut my poor finger with the big chopping knife 🙁

I grab a towel and wrap my bleeding finger, grab the first aid kit and the band-aids, then just as I’m about to wrap the band-aid, the light-globe in my head goes off – waste not, want not – so instead of immediately stemming the blood flow I grab my glucometer instead :T

I guess you really know when you’re diabetic eh? 😉

  • Winter basal rates…..

Well I have not posted to this forum for a long time and am happy to be back, but i’ve ran into some trouble. I am currently pumpin with the Animas Ping. And had my basal rate dialed in perfectly my BG have been in the 85-100 daily until recently the past couple of months. And it has been getting colder which means, i have been less active and therefore sweat less. So my question is i’ve been trying to re-adjust my basal rates to compensate but how much per hour is too much? Is this common to have to adjust my basal rate as the season and my exercise changes? Sorry for the long post but thanks for all of the help!~Chris
