May 28 (Bloomberg) — North Korean Major General Pak Rim Su disputed the results of the international investigation into the sinking of a South Korean warship and said “any accidental clash that may break out in the waters of the West Sea of Korea or in areas along the Demilitarized Zone will lead to all-out war,” at a press conference today, according a KCNA statement.
Singer Alicia Keys will soon be mother and wife. The representative and boyfriend of the artist, the 29-year-old producer Swizz Beatz has confirmed to People.com that they are engaged and expecting their first child together.
Keys and Beatz “are expecting a baby and are committed to marry later this year in a private ceremony,” explained the representative. The announcement came after the musicians attended the 2010 Keep a Child Alive Black Ball, in London on Thursday.
In addition, a friend of the couple told Us Magazine that both Keys and Beatz “are very happy.”
This would be the first wedding for the twelve times winner of Grammy Award singer, while for the producer and hip-hop artist Swizz Beatz the second. Swizz has two children Jr. and Prince Kasseem from his previous relationship with the artist Mashonda Tifrere. Their relationship ended badly, with Mashonda talking about the infidelities of her husband with Alicia, a relationship that started in 2008, but was confirmed only in May 2009.

The 37th day since the explosion at the Deepwater Horizon oil rig saw several very dark clouds in the BP oil disaster, as well as a silver lining.
BP undertook a “top kill” maneuver to staunch the river of oil coming from the damaged well. This effort involved shooting drilling muds into the drilling apparatus on the ocean floor to block the oil from escape:
In the top kill maneuver, a 30,000-horsepower engine aboard a ship injected heavy drill liquids through two narrow flow lines into the stack of pipes and other equipment above the well to push the escaping oil and gas back down below the sea floor.
This effort appears to have worked – for now. The New York Times just reported
Engineers appeared to have stemmed the flow of oil, Adm. Thad W. Allen of the Coast Guard, the leader of the government effort, said on Friday morning. But he stressed that the next 12 to 18 hours will be “very critical” in permanently stanching what is already the worst oil spill in United States history.
The success of this effort to plug the hole is critical to the public, economic, and ecological health of the Gulf Coast because experts now believe that much more oil is flooding the Gulf than previously estimated. The federal government’s analysis of the oil flow rate through the drill site found that it was two to five times greater than the earlier estimate of 5,000 barrels of oil per day.
USGS Director Dr. Marcia McNutt today announced that the National Incident Command’s Flow Rate Technical Group (FRTG) has developed an independent, preliminary estimate of the amount of oil flowing from BP’s leaking oil well…
Based on three separate methodologies, outlined below, the independent analysis of the Flow Rate Technical Group has determined that the overall best initial estimate for the lower and upper boundaries of flow rates of oil is in the range of 12,000 and 19,000 barrels per day.
This translates to 504,000 to 798,000 gallons of oil per day have flowed from beneath the seabed into the Gulf of Mexico. The flood of oil could total between 18 million to nearly 30 million gallons since the Gulf nightmare began on April 20th. The Exxon Valdez incident spilled over 11 million gallons of oil into Prince William Sound in 1989. The BP oil disaster now has the dubious record as the largest oil debacle in U.S. history.
After the initial explosion, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar launched a quick examination of the BP oil disaster, and to develop recommendations for immediate safety measures. He also declared a thirty day time out in new drilling, although the New York Times determined that “despite moratorium, drilling projects move ahead.”
On May 28th, the Department of Interior presented that report to the President. It recommended a longer time out for oil leasing, exploration, and drilling time in deep waters until the completion of the independent investigation led by former Senator Bob Graham and former EPA Administrator William Reilly. During his remarks today, the President announced this six month time out.
Its initial recommendations include aggressive new operating standards and requirements for offshore energy companies, which we will put in place.
Additionally, after reading the report’s recommendations with Secretary Salazar and other members of my administration, we’re going to be ordering the following the actions.
First, we will suspend the planned exploration of two locations off the coast of Alaska.
Second, we will cancel the pending lease sale in the Gulf of Mexico and the proposed lease sale off the coast of Virginia.
Third, we will continue the existing moratorium and suspend the issuance of new permits to drill new deepwater wells for six months.
And four, we will suspend action on 33 deepwater exploratory wells currently being drilled in the Gulf of Mexico.
This is a welcome reprieve for the northern coast of Alaska because it halts the exploratory wells that Shell was set to drill in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas. The Alaska Wilderness League notes that
The Beaufort and Chukchi Seas, the Arctic waters north of Alaska, are sometimes known as America’s ‘Polar Bear Seas’ – and for good reason… These waters are home to the entire population of U.S. polar bears…Many of America’s most beloved sea animals thrive here, including the endangered bowhead whale, sea otters, walrus, seals and countless birds.
Little is known about the effects of a recently-proposed massive oil and gas program on this fragile ecosystem. The government’s Mineral Management Service predicted a 33 to 50 percent likelihood of a large oil spill in the Chukchi Sea alone if drilling proposals were to move forward, while acknowledging that the technology needed to clean up such a spill does not exist.
The report also made the following recommendations (subscription required) to improve safety on rigs.
Among the new safety restrictions Salazar is recommending in a report to Obama are requirements for all blowout preventers to be certified, stronger well control, tougher inspections, and expanded safety and training programs for rig workers.
In addition to describing the Administration’s efforts to respond to the oil spill, President Obama once again urged the Senate to pass comprehensive clean energy and global warming legislation:
This economic and environmental tragedy … underscores the urgent need for this nation to develop clean, renewable sources of energy.
The House of Representatives has already passed a bill that would finally jump-start a permanent transition to a clean-energy economy. And there is currently a plan in the Senate, a plan that was developed with ideas from Democrats and Republicans, that would achieve the same goal.
This disaster should serve as a wake-up call that it’s time to move forward on this legislation. It’s time to accelerate the competition with countries like China who’ve already realized the future lies in renewable energy. And it’s time to seize that future ourselves. So I call on Democrats and Republicans in Congress, working with my administration, to answer this challenge once and for all.
To accomplish this critical goal, President Obama and Senate leaders must role up their sleeves, and pass legislation which would reduce oil use, establish new safety standards for offshore oil drilling, and cut global warming pollution. We don’t have much time left.

The rapper is supporting Rage Against The Machine frontman Zack De La Rocha, who is spearheading a campaign against the clause opponents call legally-sanctioned racial profiling. Yeezy compares the plight of Arizona residents to that of the civil rights activists who boycotted buses in Montgomery after Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white passenger in 1955.
“When Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat, they arrested her. As a result, people got together and said, ‘We are not going to ride the bus until they change the law.’ It was this courageous action that sparked the Montgomery bus boycott. What if we got together, signed a collective letter saying, ‘We’re not going to ride the bus’, saying ‘We are not going to comply. We are not going to play in Arizona. We are going to boycott Arizona?!”
Cypress Hill, Massive Attack, rapper Pitbull, comedian Jack Black, and Oscar-winning filmmaker Michael Moore have also joined the boycott effort against Arizona.

In a training base in Jenin, the West Bank, the Palestinian National Security Force, has agreed to give us an exclusive look at what amounts to a light army now springing up in the West Bank.
‘Light’ because all the Israeli’s have allowed them to pack are AK-47 rifles, at least so far.
There are already 2500 Palestinian soldiers deployed in 10 Palestinian City’s and dozens of smaller towns. By next year there will be double that number. And America is largely responsible for their training and equipping.
3 star Lt. General Keith Dayton has quietly been working here, since the take over of the Gaza strip by Hamas extremists in 2007 to build a Palestinian army. American Special Forces soldiers are helping to whip them into shape in training centers in Jordan and the West Bank, to stop Hamas from taking more territory and to protect the Palestinian authority of Mahmoud Abbas. And many Palestinian soldiers couldn’t praise enough what they called the high degree of professional training provided by the American SF team.
General Dayton’s spokesman refused our requests for interviews, and said the Palestinians would also not talk. Odd considering American tax payers have funded most of the force to the tune of more than 500 million dollars.
But in fact the Palestinians agreed to show us their soldiers and talk to us, because they are proud of the army believing it’s critical to forming a Palestinian State and to demonstrate to Israel there will be security for both people’s.
Palestinian Colonel Raed Asedeh says “all members of Hamas are screened out” from the army. “Hamas is banned” he adds.
And while Israel has reluctantly agreed to allow the build up of the NSF, Israeli leaders understand the risks not only in having a Palestinian force and also in not having one.
“If the whole thing collapses, who knows what these weapon will be used for” said Israeli Deputy P.M. Dan Meridor in my interview with him in Jerusalem. But he went on to say he was in favor of the NSF, stating “I am not playing down the risks, but if we don’t agree to anything, and leave the situation unresolved terror may erupt”. In the context of security he said a peace agreement has to be reached; “We can’t be the South Africa of the past”, said Meridor who is also the director of Israeli Intelligence.
The Palestinian soldiers say the drop in terror attacks in Israel is not only due to Israels wall built across the West Bank, but also because of the successes of the NSF. They meet with Israeli military commanders and both sides say they have shared information with each other, and had some small degree of co-operation.
Still the Palestinians note the Israeli’s tie up their requests for critical equipment at the borders for months on end including simple gear like two way radios. The Israeli’s won’t allow them enough bullets to conduct target practice for soldiers on training bases or tear gas to deal with crowd control.
And remarkably the Israeli army orders the NSF in Jenin not to patrol the streets from midnight to 6am.
Colonel Asedeh questions “how are we to have the trust of our people if we are only providing order half the time”? But he predicts it’s only a matter of time before his troops patrol all of the West Bank, marching towards a Palestinian State.

The 12 b vitamin is one of the b vitamins that are essential to maintain a healthy body. Otherwise known as Cobalamin, the 12b vitamin is needed for the processes to convert the carbohydrates, fats and proteins from food into energy. 12 b also, more importantly, helps keep the red blood cells healthy and therefore prevent heart disease as well as keeping the immune system functioning at its maximum level. In addition, 12 b is used to create the protective covering of all nerve cells in the body.
The most important function of 12 b is to form healthy red blood cells. However, all cells need 12 b to keep them healthy. It is the white blood cells, amongst others, that need 12 b to help ensure that the immune system functioning properly. All of the nerve cells in the body also need 12 b to form their protective fatty layer. This is essential for all of the nerves but is especially so for those in the brain. If there is not sufficient 12 b to create this protective layer then the brain will not be functioning properly.
Interestingly, the amount of 12 b that the body needs is relatively small but is needed on a regular basis. However, 12 b on its own is not enough as the body cannot absorb it easily. To help the body absorb 12 b the stomach produces intrinsic factor which enables more of the 12 b to be absorbed. 12 b is only found in animal foods such as liver, eggs, fish and meat but most people consume far more than their recommended daily amount of 12 b. This is not a problem as the body can only absorb about half of the 12 b that is consumed. It is also worth noting that the body can recycle the 12 b which cuts down on the impact of a 12 b deficiency. However, strict vegetarians or vegans are likely to require 12 b supplements if they do not eat any animal products that contain 12 b.
If the body does not have enough 12 b then anaemia is the most obvious symptom. Obviously, this is due to the fact that there is not enough 12 b to make healthy red blood cells. Anaemia can also be caused by the body not creating enough intrinsic factor to help absorb the 12 b that is available in the food consumed. The body tends to makes less intrinsic factor once a person reaches 50 and this will lead to less 12 b being absorbed and supplements of 12 b may be required. Kids are also at risk from anaemia because they may not eat the food that contain 12 b. Pregnant women need more 12 b because the baby is absorbing 12 b during the pregnancy to grow properly.

Budding authors are often only budding because it’s so difficult to get published. Many have that great novel written with no viable outlet to get it into reader’s hands. E-books have made it possible to breach that barrier, with a number of outlets that work with authors to get work published in digital form. Apple has rolled out such an opportunity that has big potential for unknown writers to get works published on a major online book outlet. The iBookstore is Apple’s venue for selling e-books for the iPad and the iPhone, and it’s now open to those wishing to publish their own books.
Apple looks to be approaching this correctly, with simple rules that must be followed to get works accepted for sale in the iBookstore. Any book must have a valid ISBN number and be submitted in a valid ePub format, neither of which is difficult to do. Authors must also have a U.S. tax ID and an iTunes store account, meaning those outside the U.S. are left out of the iBookstore for now.
It’s not clear what cut Apple is taking from book sales published this way, but for those trying desperately to get their works out in the public this is a major outlet full of potential. You’ve always planned on writing that great novel, now you have a place to sell it. I can already envision the first novel to go viral in the iBookstore, bringing fame and fortune to some writer.

Apple’s iPhone production is ramping up to levels that suggest it’s “increasingly becoming carrier-agnostic” and could mean we’ll see a Verizon iPhone sooner than previously expected, Rodman & Renshaw analyst Ashok Kumar alleges in a note to clients today. Up to 12 million iPhones are already in the supply chain for the September quarter — a huge amount considering Apple has sold some 50 million of the devices worldwide since June of 2007. Kumar believes that if such production trends continue, Apple will move 40 million iPhones this year. He further believes that if Apple inks a deal with Verizon Wireless by the end of 2010 — which may be the last year of iPhone exclusivity with AT&T in the U.S. — pent-up demand for a Verizon iPhone could drive quarterly sales to 17 million.
Although Kumar is throwing around what sound like large numbers and what-if scenarios, his numbers may actually be in line when you look at several other key bits of information:
Given that Google claims the activation of some 100,000 Android devices per day, the game is clearly on between it and Apple. In 18 short months, Android has proven itself to be a force against Apple’s mighty iPhone and is catching up in terms of market share. And according to a recent AdMob report, much of the Android army is based in North America, so Apple could use another iPhone brigade in the form of Verizon.
And the fact that AT&T recently jacked up the price of its early termination fee to $325, effective next week, is just further evidence that AT&T expects to soon be losing its cash cow. Perhaps the big news at Apple’s WWDC event next week isn’t what we already know — there’s a new iPhone coming soon — but instead is what many hope for: at long last, a Verizon iPhone.

Google Takes the Open Battle to Apple on Multiple Fronts
Clusters of smart people of the highly educated sort that economists refer to as “human capital” are the key engine of economic growth and development. Jane Jacobs argued that the clustering of talented and energetic in cities is the fundamental driving force of economic development. In a classic essay, “On the Mechanics of Economic Development,” the Nobel prize-winning, University of Chicago economist Robert Lucas formalized Jacobs’ insights and argued that human capital, or what can be called Jane Jacobs externalities, are indeed the key factor in economic growth and development. Still, the standard way economists measure human capital is to take the percentage of people in a country, state, or metropolitan area with a bachelor’s degree or higher most scholars measure human capital in terms of population.
So I was intrigued by this fascinating analysis by Rob Pitingolo (h/t: Don Peck) which looks at the density of human capital. Pitingolo put together a neat measure that he refers to as “educational attainment density.” Instead of measuring human capital or college degree holders as a function of population, he measures it as a function of land area — that is, as college degree holders per square mile. As he explains:
I compiled the data at two geographic levels: first at the city level and second at the “urban county” level. I realize that comparing these geographies is not always entirely fair. That’s why I’m giving away the spreadsheet with all of my work to anyone who wants to build upon this analysis (download it here). I picked these cities by looking at the 50 largest metro areas by population and pulling what I deemed to be the “primary city” from each. In two metro areas, the Twin Cities and Bay Area, I pulled two “primary cities.”
He goes through a variety of analyses — all of which I highly recommend. But let me just show the results of his analysis of college degree density for the 50 largest cities.
Pitingolo also provides an interesting analysis of human capital density at the county level, as well as identifying places that perform better or worse than expected on “predicted degree density” via a residual analysis. He raises an important question about “human capital sprawl.” As he defines it, this occurs when human capital density is lower in the central city than its surrounding county. He finds preliminary evidence of human capital sprawl in five places — Louisville, Jacksonville, Oklahoma City, Nashville, and Indianapolis, noting that: “This preliminary result is particularly worrisome if you believe that metro areas need strong central cities and strong central cities need a lot of smart people.”

Last November, rumors surfaced that there was a vegan vitamin D3. I’m still occasionally getting questions about it, so I decided to write up what I know.
It appears that these claims have originated with two different brands: MegaFoods and LifeGive.
MegaFoods
I could not find anywhere in which MegaFoods is currently claiming that their vitamin D3 is vegan, but it appears that at one time, someone was claiming that it was. Click here for a write-up about how it is not vegan:

They say that their vitamin d3 is from S. cerevisiae, and technically it is- however, they actually take regular old vitamin d made from sheep lanolin that anyone can buy in stores, and they ‘feed’ this vitamin d3 to the yeast in order to ‘Biotransform’ the vitamin d3 into what they claim is an effective and bioavailable form of vitamin d3 that is easily ‘utilized’ by the human body.
If you go to their website, Mega Foods doesn’t claim that their vitamin D3 is vegan. A page at Amazon.com claims that MegaFoods’ vitamin D3 does not come from fish and that it is suitable for vegetarians, which I suppose is technically true if they mean lacto-ovo vegetarians who are willing to use sheep’s lanolin.
This site, Whole Foods Vitamins, sells MegaFood’s Vitamin D3 and explains a bit about it:

I’m not sure if that’s important to know, but now we do. Moving on…
LifeGive Sun D
LifeGive Sun D is being advertised by two companies, UpayaNaturals and Alive Raw, as being vegan vitamin D3. They both say:
LifeGive Sun-D offers a superior, naturally occurring vegan source of vitamin D3 with vitamin D precursors from Shiitake mushrooms and rice germ ex-tracts. Sun-D offers supplies [sic] pure and powerful plant source of living and life- supporting vitamin D for preventing nutrient deficiencies, supporting good health and preventing the development of threatening health conditions.
On November 18, 2009, I wrote UpayaNaturals to inquire about their product and never got a response. However, a JackNorrisRD.com reader, who also wrote them last November, got a response from the company saying, “All the information comes directly from our supplier’s web page.”
I could not find any more information about LifeGive – the company or their Sun D product.
At this time, no one else knows of any way to create vegan D3 and I would say that this casts doubt on whether LifeGive’s Sun D is truly vegan.
In large, single doses, vitamin D3 may be more effective than D2; but in smaller, sustained doses, D2 appears to be as effective. It might take some time to build up your stores of vitamin D by taking D2. Here are my recommendations.
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is considered as one of the most boring film this year. Said to be a lazy affair with zero character development, the film is also the worst big budget scripts this year.
Reviews on sites play on the film as they say that someone that is watching the movie should be caffeineted in order not to sleep. Someone could imagine a movie that all the time, every character talks and over-explains what they are doing and why. Every line is either explaining a character’s motives or desires. It’s not that the film is over complicated, but the viewers would eventually going to lack their interest.
The film gets more boring halfway through. The script goes worse as there are no memorable lines or any character development piece in the entire piece and the script’s vague attempts at commentary of the modern war (false information leading to an attack) are so thin that they are equal to being useless.
The film is loosely-based on the video game series Prince of Persia.

Americans for Legal Immigration PAC (ALIPAC) has announced that nearly a dozen and a half states are now filing versions of Arizona’s S.B. 1070 law, designed to help local police enforce America’s existing immigration laws.
Various polls have indicated that close to 75 percent of the U.S. population supports Arizona’s move and wants their own states to do the same.
“Our national network of activists has been working overtime trying to help the state of Arizona and the brave Arizonans who have passed this bill,” said William Gheen, president of the activist group. “Arizona no longer stands alone, and we have now documented state lawmakers filing, or announcing they will file, versions of the Arizonan bill in 17 states. We will not stop until all states are protected from invasion as required by the U.S. Constitution.”
ALIPAC has documented that the following 17 states are taking a page out of Arizona’s book in response to citizen pressure: Arkansas, Idaho, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Texas and Utah.
Gheen, who is a former campaign consultant, legislative assistant, state lobbyist and assistant sergeant-at-arms staffer in North Carolina, has turned his local experiences into a political battle plan.
He said, “The federal government has been hijacked by special interests that are neglectful of their duties and even hostile toward the rightful citizens of America. It is incumbent upon our states to protect American lives, property, jobs, wages, security and health, when the Executive Branch fails to honor its constitutional responsibility to do so by enforcing our existing border and immigration laws.”

Bilderberg-controlled news outlets in Europe and the Western Hemisphere are conditioning the public to accept two of the super-secret elite’s major goals in advance of its meeting June 4-7 in Sitges, Spain: a U.S. attack on Iran and a financial bailout of Greece and other European Union (EU) countries.
But even before the Bilderberg group gathered behind the sealed-off, guarded Dolce Hotel in Sitges, a resort community 12 miles from Barcelona, resistance to throwing more tax dollars at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to bail out Europe sprang up in Congress.
Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.) introduced legislation to require the Treasury Department to oppose further IMF “loans” to stricken European countries until all EU members are in compliance with their own constitutional limits on debt—and very few of them are. Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) introduced companion legislation in the Senate.
Just the threat of the legislation prompted Senate Democratic leaders to agree to an amendment to financial legislation that would prohibit the United States from participating in bailouts that are unlikely to be repaid. KNOXVILLE — Another session of “Going Online,” the popular one-day workshop for high school journalism teachers who want to start a news website or take their print publications online, will be held Monday, June 14, at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
“Our first workshop was so successful that we decided to do it again,” said Jim Stovall, UT Knoxville journalism professor and director of the workshop. “Around 30 teachers from Tennessee and surrounding states joined us in April to learn how to switch the focus of high school journalism from print to online. We were impressed by their enthusiasm,” he said.

The workshop is sponsored by the UT Knoxville School of Journalism and Electronic Media and the Intercollegiate Online News Network (ICONN) and is supported by Edgenics, a broadband service company based in New Jersey.
The cost of the workshop is $15 per teacher.
The workshop will be in the Scripps Convergence Lab in the College of Communication and Information. It will begin at 9 a.m. and last until 3 p.m. Lunch and parking are included in the registration fee.
