  • “Nightline” Bests “The Tonight Show” for the 30th Consecutive Week in Total Viewers

    ABC News “Nightline” outperformed “The Tonight Show” for the thirtieth consecutive week among Total Viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research for the week of January 11, 2010. This is the first time “Nightline” has beaten “Tonight Show” among Total Viewers for thirty consecutive weeks since at least the 1991/92 season, which is as far as records date.

     

    Last week “Nightline” aired extensive coverage of the earthquake in Haiti, a report from Bill Weir embedded with US soldiers from the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, and a follow-up to a “Nightline” investigation by Brian Ross on the acquittal of a UAE royal sheikh that prompted questions from US State Department officials after the report aired.

     


    ABC News’ “Nightline” is anchored by Cynthia McFadden, Terry Moran and Martin Bashir. John Donvan and Vicki Mabrey are correspondents. James Goldston is the executive producer. The program airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m., ET on the ABC Television Network.

  • World News is Up 4% Among Total Viewers and Up 6% in The Demo for the Week Compared to its Season to Date Average

    In Sawyer’s First 4 Weeks as Anchor, World News is Up 8% in Total Viewers and 6% in the Demo Over its Season to Date Average

     

    For the week of January 11th “ABC World News with Diane Sawyer” averaged 8.53 million Total Viewers and a 2.0/7 among Adults 25-54 according to Nielsen Media Research.

     

    For the week, “World News” was up 4% (+350,000) among Total Viewers and up 6% (+150,000) among Adults 25-54 compared to its season-to-date average.

     

    In Diane Sawyer’s first four weeks as anchor, “World News” has averaged 8,800,000 Total Viewers and 2,460,000 Adults 25-54.  That is up 8% (+620,000) above World News’ season-to-date average among Total Viewers and up 6% (+130,000) in the demo.

     

    Compared to a year ago, “World News’” total viewing advantage over CBS Evening News (1,790,000) grew 16%.

     

    Last week’s “World News” featured Diane Sawyer and Bill Weir reporting “Afghanistan: Where Things Stand” as well as extensive coverage of the Haiti earthquake from Sawyer, Robin Roberts, Dan Harris, Kate Snow, Martha Raddatz and Dr. Richard Besser.

    Diane Sawyer to Anchor a Special One-Hour Edition of “World News” from Port Au Prince, Haiti

     

    ABC New Special: “Earthquake Haiti: Race to Save a Country” to Air Tonight at 8 PM ET/PT

     

    ABC News will continue its comprehensive coverage of the Haiti earthquake tonight, Thursday January 14th with a special one-hour edition of “World News with Diane Sawyer” followed by the ABC News special: ”Earthquake Haiti: Race To Save A Country” anchored by Diane Sawyer in Haiti and George Stephanopoulos and Elizabeth Vargas in New York at 8:00 PM ET/PT.

     

    Diane Sawyer will anchor “World News” from Port au Prince, Haiti. The broadcast will include the latest information on the scope of the disaster as well as aid and rescue efforts in Haiti with reports from “Good Morning America” Anchor Robin Roberts, “GMA Weekend” anchor Kate Snow, “World News Sunday” anchor Dan Harris, Senior Heath and Medical Editor Richard Besser and Senior Foreign Affairs Correspondent Martha Raddatz. “World News Saturday” Anchor David Muir and Barbara Pinto will report on American efforts to help Haiti and its people. 

     

    “Earthquake Haiti: Race To Save A Country” will be anchored by Diane Sawyer, George Stephanopoulos and Elizabeth Vargas.  The hour-long special will feature additional reporting from ABC News anchors and correspondents on the scene in Haiti.  “20/20” co-anchor Chris Cuomo will report from “Little Haiti” in Miami, FL with families holding out hope that their loved ones will survive as they await news and information from Haiti.

     

    On Friday, January 15, “20/20” anchored by Elizabeth Vargas and Chris Cuomo will be devoted to the earthquake in Haiti.

  • “Good Morning America” Posts Highest Demo in Nearly a Year and Delivers Highest Total Viewers in a Month

     “GMA” Extends its Viewing Advantages Over CBS Both Week-To-Week and Year-to-Year in Both Adults 25-54 Demo and Total Viewers 

     

    For the week of January 4th, ABC’s “Good Morning America” averaged 4.6 million Total Viewers and a 1.6/11 among Adults 25-54. The show posted its best Adult 25-54 delivery in nearly a year (since the week of 3/30/09) and delivered its highest number in a month among Total Viewers (since the wk of 12/7/09)

      

    In addition, “GMA” expanded its demo (840,000) and Total Viewing (1,520,000) advantages over the “Early Show” both week-to-week (A25-54: 50%; Total Viewers: +17%) and year-to-year (A25-54: +31%; Total Viewers: +16%). This was ABC’s largest weekly demo lead in more than nine months (since the week of 3/30/09)

     

    Week-to-week, “GMA” posted impressive gains among both A25-54 (+28%) and Total Viewers (+19%). 

     

    Year-to-year, “GMA” grew among Total viewers by +2%.

     


    The Emmy Award-winning morning news program, featuring the anchor team of Robin Roberts, George Stephanopoulos, Sam Champion and Juju Chang, airs live Monday through Friday from 7:00-9:00 a.m. ET on the ABC Television Network.   • “Nightline” is #1 Among A25-54 – Bests “Letterman” and “Tonight Show”

    “Nightline” Grows +11% Among A18-49 Week to Week 

     

    ABC News “Nightline” was #1 among Adults 25-54 for the week of January 4, 2010 outperforming NBC’s “The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien” and CBS’ “Late Show with David Letterman,” according to Nielsen Media Research. This marks the 12th consecutive week “Nightline” outperformed “Tonight Show” among A25-54.  Week to week, Nightline” grew +3% among A25-54 and +11%  among A18-49.

     

    Among Total Viewers, “Nightline” outperformed “The Tonight Show” for the twenty-ninth consecutive week. This is the first time “Nightline” has beaten “Tonight Show” among Total Viewers for twenty-nine consecutive weeks since at least the 1991/92 season, which is as far as records date.

  • “This Week” Continues to Close Gaps with “Meet The Press” – Narrows Total Viewing Gap by 69% and Demo Gap by 70% Season to Date

    “This Week” is #2 Season-to-Date Among Total Viewers

     

    According to Nielsen Media Research, ABC News “This Week with George Stephanopoulos” on Sunday, January 10, 2010 closed the total viewing gap with NBC’s “Meet the Press” by 69% (380,000 in 2010 vs. 1,210,000 in 2009) season to date.  Among the key Adults 25-54 demographic, ABC closed the gap with NBC by 70% (140,000 in 2010 vs. 460,000 in 2009).   Season-to-date, “This Week” is averaging 2.77 million Total Viewers, maintaining its second place rank for the season so far,  outperforming CBS’s “Face the Nation.”

     


    Guests on last Sunday’s show included White House Council of Economic Advisers Chair Christina Romer. On the roundtable: George Will, Liz Cheney, Bloomberg’s Al Hunt, Judy Woodruff of the PBS Newshour, and former Clinton Labor Secretary Robert Reich.

  • “WORLD NEWS WITH DIANE SAWYER” TO AIR SPECIAL ONE-HOUR BROADCAST TONIGHT ON THE HAITI QUAKE

    World News with Diane Sawyer” will air a special one-hour edition tonight; Wednesday, January 13th focused on the earthquake in Haiti.

     

    George Stephanopoulos will anchor the broadcast. Good Morning America Weekend” anchor Kate Snow, “World News Sunday” anchor Dan Harris, Senior Heath and Medical Editor Richard Besser and Senior Foreign Affairs Correspondent Martha Raddatz will all report from the region.

     

    “World News Saturday” anchor David Muir will report on humanitarian efforts, Sr. Justice Dept. Correspondent Pierre Thomas will have the latest on the FBI investigation into fraudulent groups seeking aid donations.  David Wright and Bianna Golodryga will also contribute reporting.

     

    Also, Stephanopoulos will interview President Bill Clinton, UN Special Envoy for Haiti.

     

    Diane Sawyer is en route to Haiti from Afghanistan and will anchor Thursday’s “World News” from the quake zone.

    ABC News will provide comprehensive coverage of the Haiti earthquake across its broadcasts and platforms.

     

    “World News” Anchor Diane Sawyer and “Good Morning America” Anchor Robin Roberts are en route to the quake zone and will anchor from there on Thursday. Also travelling to the region and reporting beginning today are “Good Morning America Weekend” anchor Kate Snow, “World News Sunday” anchor Dan Harris, Senior Heath and Medical Editor Richard Besser and Senior Foreign Affairs Correspondent Martha Raddatz.

     

    “World News,” “Nightline” and “Good Morning America” will devote a significant portion of their broadcasts to covering the disaster with reports from the region as well as on US and international aid efforts.

     

    ABCNews.com is reporting extensively on the earthquake in Haiti and has created a special subsection: http://abcnews.go.com/International/HaitiEarthquake. The section will include reports from all platforms and correspondents covering the relief and recovery efforts.
