  • The new Stiavelli stripping sealing jaws for food packaging

The special MCR/STRIPPING sealing jaws assembly for Stiavelli horizontal packers for long goods is at present the best solution available on the market to the growing problem related to the production of bags with pasta scraps in the horizontal seals.

One of the unequalled features of these jaws which are controlled by an independent brushless motor is the possibility to work in two different conditions: MCR traditional operation and new STRIPPING action which cleans the seal area just before sealing thus remarkably reducing the production of bags with scraps. The shift to either operation is mechanic.

The max. percentage of bags with scraps with STRIPPING operation jaws is max. 1% (this data applies to 500-gram bags of dried spaghetti diam.1,7 mm).

Another unique characteristic of the STRIPPING jaws is the possibility to be retrofitted onto all the old Stiavelli electronic horizontal packers. Pavan has successfully carried out such job for some of its most important customers

  • Leak Detecting Flow Switch Prevents Damage To Gas Compressors

Process and plant engineers who need to monitor fugitive emissions from compressors, pressure relief valves, pumps and other gas flowing components will find a highly reliable solution in the FlexSwitch® FLT93S Flow Switch from Fluid Components International (FCI).

The FLT93S Switch’s high sensitivity and ability to detect and alarm on very low flows offers fast response leak monitoring and detection of gas flows. It provides early warning and process shut-down signals that can prevent damage to these expensive components and their processes as well as reduce the probability of accidents and government incident reporting.

The FLT93S Switch is the ideal plant preventative maintenance and safety tool. It helps ensure gas flow system components are operating correctly. Gas flow process components are frequently installed with a flow switch to detect leaks of all kinds. For example, detection of a blown relief valve or one that has not seated properly is an ideal application for the FLT93S Switch. These FCI flow switches are a best available technology solution because of their ability to sense very low flow rates, to provide the earliest possible leak detection (verses less sensitive devices) and to avoid the potential damage caused by blowing seals at much higher velocities.

The FLT93S Switch is an easy to install insertion-style instrument that includes dual 6A relays, which are fully user settable for any HI, LO, HI/HI or LO/LO detection and trip scenario. It operates over a wide gas flow sensitivity range from 0.25 to 120 SFPS (0.08 to 37 SMPS). Accuracy is ±0.5 percent of reading or 2 SFPS (0.06 NMPS). The standard FLT93S withstands operating temperatures from -40 to 350°F (-40 to 177°C), and an optional configuration is available for temperatures from -100 to 850°F (-73 to 454°C). The full instrument has global agency approvals of FM, CSA, ATEX and IEC for hazardous, Ex environments and has SIL 2 compliance rating

With its advanced thermal dispersion mass flow sensor, the FLT93S Switch features built-in temperature compensation, which ensures repeatable and reliable operation, even in extreme environments, such as those found in the high temperature chemical refining and other process industries. This automatic compensation adjusts the instrument for changes in operating environment temperatures to ensure the trip points will remain accurate and will prevent false alarms or alarm failures to improve end-product quality, to maximize safety and to allow alarms to be set within a narrower set point range.

A wide selection of standard and custom process connections can be provided with the FLT93S Switch. The electronic control circuit can be integrally-mounted with the sensing element, or it can be located in a remote location. The standard enclosure is a rugged aluminum alloy rated for NEMA 4X and IP66, with stainless steel or fiberglass enclosures optionally available.

In addition to the standard FL93S Switch, FCI designs completely custom flow sensors and flow switches for OEM application to compressor and component manufacturers and system suppliers. The company’s flow applications experts will work directly with component manufacturers and with users to provide flow instrumentation solutions to meet unique equipment and application requirements, including corrosive, high pressure and high temperature environments.

Fluid Components International is a global company committed to meeting the needs of its customers through innovative solutions to the most challenging requirements for sensing, measuring and controlling flow and level of air, gases and liquids.

  • State-of-the-art drying technology

Hot air and dryer hoses for the plastics processing industry

    Masterflex, Gelsenkirchen – January 2010

Master-NEO 1 / 2 and Master-SIL 1 / 2 are special hoses by Masterflex that offer outstanding performance for handling hot and cold air between -35°C to +300°C, e.g., in plastics processing applications.

Master-NEO 1 / 2 and Master-SIL 1 / 2 are at their best whenever hot air or gaseous media must be handled or air or gaseous media must be conveyed in high-temperature environments.

The cured hoses are manufactured from silicone- or neoprene-coated glass fabrics, using state-of-the-art technology. Thanks to their outstanding service life, they help ensure smooth production cycles and reduced downtime which potentially translates into lower manufacturing costs. Their excellent flexibility and symmetrical bending characteristics allow quick and easy installation in any location, resulting in reduced machinery set-up times for the user. The hoses withstand continuous temperatures of +135°C (Master-NEO 1 / 2) and +250°C (Master-SIL 1 / 2), respectively.

    Applications for Master-NEO 1 / 2 and Master-SIL 1 / 2

Typical applications include pellet dryers in the plastic processing industry. Plastic pellets often contain a high percentage of residual moisture that must be removed before further processing can take place. Master-NEO 1 / 2 and Master-SIL 1 / 2 hoses are used to extract the hot humid air from the dryer units.

Other applications for these special hoses include vehicle and aircraft manufacturing, the paper and chemical industry as well as engine construction. The hoses often serve as air supply connector between suction filter and engine. As a rule, this application involves standard hose lengths with wire-free ends.

    Increased production capacity

The ever growing demand for high-quality Master-NEO 1 / 2 and Master-SIL 1 / 2 hoses has prompted the Masterflex AG to further expand its manufacturing and storage capacities for the relevant product lines. One-ply or two-ply designs in standard diameters from DN 13 to DN 305 are available from stock within 24 hours. It goes without saying that Masterflex also manufactures and supplies appropriate connecting elements such as clamps, connectors, reducing sockets and wire-free end sleeves.

  • Sony licenses ‘official’ PS3 external HDDs, doesn’t fully comprehend concept of interoperability

Hey there, why so glum? You’ve overfilled your PS3’s internal storage with mission-critical data and don’t have anywhere else to stash your incoming Best of Miley Cyrus compilation? Fear not, Sony’s got you covered with a pair of officially licensed external HDDs built by Buffalo. They look remarkably similar to standard issue USB portable drives — so much so in fact that one of them is a rebadged unit that Buffalo already retails in the US — but let’s not nitpick here. The two drives on offer come with a generous 500GB of storage and their prices aren’t too bad with the rebadge setting you back around $130 while the more stylish HD-AV500U2 above will cost around $168. You could of course ignore Sony, buy any drive you like and jack it into your PS3; it’s just that these aren’t too terrible as far as unnecessarily licensed peripherals go. Both drives will be hitting Japan in March to coincide with the Torne DVR adapter release.

  • Toshiba Portege M780 highlights business laptop refresh to Core i-series CPUs

For some among us, the VAIO E series is the pinnacle of modern mobile computing design. Then there are other, saner individuals, who prefer the understated aesthetics of what are commonly termed business laptops. For that latter group, we have a whole glut of new Toshiba notebooks to look at, highlighted by the delectable looking Portege M780 above. Much in the vein of HP’s 2730p, it’s a 12.1-inch convertible tablet PC, with a spill-resistant keyboard and rugged features (tested to withstand drops from up to 1 meter), but its biggest attraction will still likely be the Core i5 heart thumping inside. Also undergoing upgrades are the Tecra A11 (already available in the US), M11 and S11, which will come with up to 8GB of RAM, 802.11n wireless, SSD options, and of course Intel Core i7 CPUs. Check them out after the break, and expect them to arrive in Europe, the Middle East and Africa this quarter, with the M780 close behind them with a Q2 2010 release.

  • BBC Newsnight on IPCC by Roger Pielke Jr.

Article Tags: Roger Pielke Jr., Video Link

    Image Attachment

Tonite I was on BBC Newsnight (screenshot above) with Professor Chris Field, the (new) head of IPCC Working Group II. I knew that the interview was not going to go well when Professor Field explained, not-so-accurately, that as soon as the IPCC heard about the glacier error it quickly came out with a statement clarifying the matter. No mention of “voodoo science” or “schoolboy science” or the extended period of denial of error by the IPCC leadership.

I had a chance to summarize the problems in the IPCC associated with its creation of the “mystery graph” and the outright falsification of my views in the IPCC review comments. Professor Fields completely ignored these issues and instead chose to obfuscate and deny any problem whatsoever. This is remarkable because all Professor Field would have had to say was something like the following, “These are serious allegations, especially about the misrepresentations of Roger’s views in the review process. We should tighten up our procedures to make sure this sort of thing does not happen again.” And then the IPCC should follow it up with some improvements to the process.

Instead, Professor Field tried to talk over me and deny, deny, deny. As I said in the interview, this issue is not ambiguous. The studies are not equivocal. There is no signal of rising temperatures in the disaster record. Period. Maybe there will be in the future, but there wasn’t in 2006, when the IPCC deadline for publication occurred and there is not now. Further, both the “mystery graph” and the falsification of my views are unambiguous failures of the IPCC process to ensure that accurate information is included in its reports. How can this be denied?

  • This Chart Shows What A Joke Euro Currency Discipline Is

Here's a simply reminder of how essentially the entire euro currency bloc is a classic case of 'tragedy of the commons.' Euro bloc rules state that no country should have an annual budget deficit in excess of 3% of their GDP. This is meant to ensure that the euro's strength isn't undermined by member nations rampantly spending beyond their means and ruining the Eurozone's collective financial situation.

Well, as shown below almost every major economy has completely blown through the spending cap with deficits well in excess of 3% of GDP (shown in red). The only major economy missing from the chart is France, who nevertheless appears to have had a budget deficit of nearly 8% of GDP in 2009.

The U.S. 2009 $1.3 trillion budget deficit came in at 9.2% of GDP, which is bad, but the point is that the euro currency bloc looks pretty horrible as well:
