  • Rumor: 27-inch iMac Production Halted Due to Display Issues [Rumor]

Apple has already put a 3-week delay on all of its 27-inch iMac shipments because of the manifold issues with its display. Now Hardmac is reporting they’ve stopped all assembly lines until a fix is found.

It’s an anonymous source that has yet to be substantiated, but it makes some sense given the depths of problems Apple has had with the 27-inch iMacs, including a flickering and yellow-tinted screen. There’s no point in continuing to manufacture a product that you know is faulty, especially if the eventual fix could potentially involve a recall. [Hardmac via AppleInsider]

  • Tegra-powered Zune phone to be announced at Mobile World Congress?

Spanish blog myucomputer.com claims to have first hand knowledge that confirms that Microsoft will be announcing a Zune-themed phone at Mobile World Congress, powered by the same Tegra chipset as found in the ZuneHD.

Like the ZuneHD the device will also have HDMI-out capability, but retain the 480×272 screen.

They go on to speculate that the device will feature Windows Mobile 7, but this early in the day its likely to be the cut down non-multi-tasking version rumoured rather than the real release we will see towards the end of the year.

At WMPoweruser.com we find the rumour believable, and will make sure we are there to bring you the first pictures of the device.

    Thanks Rakesh for the tip.

  • Police violence and illegal evictions near Papua New Guinean gold mine must be investigated

The government of Papua New Guinea must investigate the conduct of police who burnt down homes and threatened people with guns while illegally evicting them from land next to one of the biggest gold mines in the country, Amnesty International said today.

Amnesty International’s report, Undermining Rights: Forced evictions and police brutality around the Porgera gold mine, Papua New Guinea, documents police violence and the forced eviction by police of families living alongside the Porgera gold mine.

Amnesty International also has concerns regarding ongoing support to the police by companies involved in the mine after the companies became aware of the police activity in the area.

The mine is 95% owned and operated by subsidiaries of the largest gold mining company in the world, Canadian-based Barrick Gold Corporation (Barrick), as part of the Porgera Joint Venture (PJV). PJV supplied accommodation, food and fuel to the police under an agreement that PJV claims was conditional on the police abiding by national laws and international standards, including the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights.

Amnesty International does not allege that either company is responsible for the police violence or the forced evictions, however it believes Barrick and PJV failed to respond adequately when company personnel became aware of the police activity in the area.

“Instead of being able to rely on the police to protect them, people who were living next to the mine’s facilities have been the victims of human rights violations by police who illegally burnt down their houses and destroyed their belongings and gardens,” said Shanta Martin, Amnesty International’s mining and human rights specialist.

The report documents how between  April and July 2009 police raided villages in the highlands of Papua New Guinea, burning down at least 130 buildings and forcing out families from their homes, including young children, pregnant women and the elderly.

Residents of the area where most of the evictions took place, Wuangima, told Amnesty International that they had no prior warning that their homes would be demolished and in many cases had no opportunity to take their belongings before their houses were burnt. No alternative housing had been provided to them by the government and many families from the area now depend on their relatives for shelter and food.

“As soon as PJV became aware that the police were burning down people’s homes right next door to the mine’s facilities, they should have recorded and reported the activity to the Papua New Guinean authorities and urged an investigation, as recommended by the Voluntary Principles,” said Shanta Martin. “Instead, PJV is continuing to support the police, and Barrick has publicly defended the police activity.”

Take ActionAmnesty International’s report urges the Papua New Guinean government to carry out a full investigation into forced evictions and police violence. The report urges the prosecution of those responsible, and for victims to be provided with remedies. It also calls on Barrick and PJV to provide information regarding the police conduct to the Papua New Guinean authorities and to urge the authorities to investigate.

  • Senate Democrats Spend the Weekend with “Fat Cat” Lobbyists at the Miami Beach Ritz

    Where'd you spend the weekend?

    Where'd you spend the weekend?

The country is still reeling from the worst recession in 70 years, with millions of Americans unable to find work. People are drowning in bills and working more hours for less pay. All that is stoking is growing populist anger about the relationship between corporate America and government and an increasing cynicism that the whole game is rigged.

    Cue the braindead DSCC.

Twelve Democratic Senators spent last weekend in Miami Beach raising money from top lobbyists for oil, drug, and other corporate interests that they often decry, according to a guest list for the event obtained by POLITICO.

The guest list for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee’s “winter retreat” at the Ritz Carlton South Beach Resort doesn’t include the price tag for attendance, but the maximum contribution to the committee, typical for such events, is $30,000. There, to participate in “informal conversations” and other meetings Saturday, were senators including DSCC Chairman Robert Menendez; Michigan’s Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow; Bob Casey of Pennsylvania; Claire McCaskill of Missouri; freshmen Kay Hagan of North Carolina and Mark Begich of Alaska; and even left-leaning Bernie Sanders of Vermont.

Heckuva job, Menendez. Keep writing those sternly-worded press releases.

“In the upcoming elections, voters will face a choice between Republicans who are standing with Wall Street fat cats, bankers and insurance companies — or Democrats who are working hard to clean up the mess we inherited by putting the people’s interests ahead of the special interests,” Menendez said in a press release last Wednesday.

    Yeah.

Here’s a little free advice, Bob. If you want to appear to be sticking it to the “fat cats,” you probably shouldn’t be caught wining and dining them at the Ritz Fucking Carlton.

  • How-To: Create a Chiptune in GarageBand

Chiptunes are everywhere, and if you’ve been intrigued by them, this article will help you create your very own out of just about any song.

Chiptunes are traditionally created using sound chips from old computer systems and game consoles. Some of the best examples of chip music can be made using Commodore 64s, GameBoys and the original NES. Since these pieces of hardware could only generate sounds and tones over a few channels, there is difficulty in creating complex songs. Along with the fact that this kind of circuit bending is not for a novice like myself and the learning curve tends to be very high. I wanted to find a way to accomplish this without spending days learning and researching software or hardware.

I am not trying to devalue chiptunes in any way, it definitely is an art form. I just want to present an alternative for those that are curious in creating their own masterpiece. So if we’re not going to need hardware and complicated software, what are we going to use? Using GarageBand ‘09, a plugin and a MIDI file, you can convert a song you already know and love into a chiptune.

First thing is to find a MIDI version of a song you want to create. I just went to Google and searched for “Muse midi” and quickly found a Muse song that would work. Save the MIDI file on your computer for later. Now we need to download the Magical 8-bit Plugin from the YMCK website and put the magical8bitPlug.component file in the /Libraries/Audio/Plug-ins/Component folder.

    1. Startup GarageBand and start new project by selecting the Piano. This will create a single track project that we can import our MIDI file into.
    2. Now drag your MIDI file into GarageBand and you will see it create new tracks for each voice in the MIDI file.
    3. Double-click a track to change the instrument from the Piano to our chiptune instrument.
    4. Click the Edit tab and then click the drop-down where it says “Piano” and select “Magical8bitPlug”
    5. Now if you want to tweak that tracks sound, click the Plugin logo and play around with the settings.

    6. This needs to be setup for every track except the drums. Use your creativity and change the track sounds to match the instrument they’re representing. The drum track needs some special attention and since the plugin won’t work for this, I did the following.
    7. Change the drum track sound to the Hip Hop drum Kit.
    8. Add a new effect to this track. Use the Bitcrusher effect and select whatever settings sound good to you. I used Wave Deconstruction.

Now you may have to tweak the volume levels on each track to your liking but for the most part, you are done. Export an MP3 and amaze your friends! Well maybe not if they read this article too, but with this knowledge you could create your own music and use the chiptune sounds as your instruments. I know this is not as hardcore as true circuit bending, so don’t send me angry emails. It’s more of a fun little project to please your creative side. Share your own creations with us through the comments and check out my final results in the audio clip below.

  • Unintended acceleration or angry customer? Toyota driver reportedly rams dealership with truck

Seems as everyone’s getting miffed at Toyota these days. Customers are angry over the millions of recalls and/or sudden yet unintended acceleration, readers are ticked at Toyota for taking our focus away from more exciting car news and we’re frankly annoyed at having to write about the ailing Japanese giant every time we switch the computer on. But none of us are as miffed as one man in Louisiana.

If we may get all Don the Rum on you for a moment, here’s what we know and what we think know: A man was returning his truck to All Star Toyota in Baton Rouge, LA when the truck rammed into the dealership. The Baton Rouge Police Department is placing the blame squarely at the feet of a “stuck accelerator pedal.” However, things sound a little fishy.

Upon hearing about the ThrottleGate recall, the owner of the truck in question decided he didn’t want his Toyota anymore, and attempted to get All Star Toyota to take the truck back and refund his money. The dealership, obviously, felt different, and offered instead to repair the man’s accelerator pedal and give him a loaner. In fact, the dealership had to explain to the owner three separate times that he could not get his money back. Three separate times on the day of the incident.

In fact, it was after the third such explanation (and third refusal by the owner to accept a loaner vehicle) that the owner of the truck experienced a stuck gas pedal and rammed into the dealership. The building received only superficial damage. The truck however, is in a pretty bad shape. When asked if they felt the accident was intended or unintended, the dealership said, “no comment.”

  • REPORT: GM wants next CEO to come from within, Whitacre out in 2-3 years

The more things change, the more… you know what we’re trying to say. Just last week, longtime AT&T guru and then interim General Motors CEO Ed Whitacre was able to ditch that pesky ‘interim’ modifier and became the king of the hill at GM. Of course, that was last week. This week we’re getting reports that Ed Whitacre (who, curiously enough, was the president of the Boy Scouts of America from 1998-2000) will be out of the RenCen in two to three years.

Why? Well, Whitacre was born in 1941, so he’ll be into his seventies by then and ready to move to his cattle ranch in Montana (or wherever it is multi-millionaire alpha males go to retire). Also, the General Motors board only named him the permanent CEO when a search for someone to step in and take the job from Whitacre came up fruitless. The search yielded no one qualified that was willing to work for the pay restrictions put in place by Uncle Sam as a result of GM’s Chapter 11 bailout.

Also, and you need to read between the lines for this one, Detroit for the most part dislikes and distrusts outsiders. Hence the fact that they are looking internally for a Whitacre replacement. Strange when you consider how much wood former Boeing-man and total Detroit outsider Alan Mulally’s been chopping over at surging Ford. Still, “Whitacre and the board want the winning candidate to emerge from a new corporate culture based on decision-making and accountability.” Well, if that’s all it takes…

  • Video: Dexter proclaims Dodge Charger is not a man bag

Click above to watch the video after the jump

When was the last time you saw a Dodge Charger commercial? It’s been a while, hasn’t it? If you’ve been missing the crosshair-wearing sedan’s presence on the boob tube, we have good news for you. The marketing types at team Pentastar are once again advertising their product, and this spot that precedes the upcoming Super Bowl commercial for the Charger follows in the footsteps of recent Chrysler 300 commercials that hit the airwaves towards the end of 2009.

The Charger spot is a very simple affair, with a jet-black R/T model sitting in a parking lot all by its lonesome. Dodge ad execs saved a bit of money by slowly zooming in on the nice-looking muscle sedan for the entire duration of the 30 second spot. No fancy CGI effects, and there’s but one simple cut here, folks. Then they apparently blew all the money they saved by hiring Showtime’s Dexter star Michael C. Hall to execute the commercial’s voice-over. Hall spends the entire time telling us what the Charger is not, and by doing so we get the message that he’s telling us that Dodge’s rear-drive sedan isn’t for lightweights.

Hit the jump to watch the video for yourself. Unless you have a small dog that wears sweaters. People with sweater-wearing dogs probably won’t like it.

  • Facebook Now Has Yahoo In Its Sites, Already Bigger In Pageviews (ComScore)

Facebook is well on its way to taking Yahoo’s spot as the third largest Web property in the world. (Google and Microsoft are No. 1 and No. 2, respectively). Last summer Facebook took the No. 4 spot globally, displacing AOL, but according to comScore there was still an estimated 241 million unique visitors a month separating it from the No. 3 site, Yahoo. In December, 2009, that gap narrowed to 125 million unique visitors globally. (That was also the same month Facebook passed AOL in the U.S. to take the No. 4 spot domestically).

In December, 2009, Facebook attracted 469 million unique visitors, up an incredible 31 million visitors from the month before. To put that in perspective, in a single month Facebook gained as many new visitors as Yahoo did all year. That one-month gain was also the equivalent of adding as many people as all of Digg or half of Twitter.com. Meanwhile, Yahoo lost 7 million unique visitors from November to December to end the year at 594 million unique visitors. (In the U.S., Yahoo is a stronger No. 2 after Google, with 161 million uniques in December, compared to 173 million for Google, 138 million for Microsoft, and 112 Million for Facebook).

These numbers are different than the 350 million registered users Facebook itself counts, half of which come every day. ComScore estimates total traffic, which is larger than the number of reported registered users (you don’t have to be a Facebook member to visit a public page). And these are estimates, remember that. And they don’t include the 60 million people a month who log into other sites via Facebook Connect.

For the year, Facebook grew by nearly 250 million uniques. Repeating that will be difficult in 2010, but even if it slows to half that pace and Yahoo remains stagnant, Facebook could overpass Yahoo within a year to become the third largest site in the world, all without even necessarily going public. Passing Microsoft (No. 2) or Google (No. 1) in unique visitors will take a little longer. Microsoft’s sites ended the year with 727 million uniques worldwide (up 80 million), while Google’s attracted 899 million in December (up 123 million).

By other measures, Facebook is already larger than both Yahoo and Microsoft. Its pageviews grew 141 percent last year to 193 billion in December, nearly double Yahoo’s 100 billion (down 2 percent) and Microsoft’s 109 billion (up 54 percent). Google is still the largest pageview generator with 274 billion a month (up 35 percent). Yahoo has simply lost its zip. At least Microsoft and Google are still showing respectable growth for their size. But it is not too hard to imagine Facebook catching up to Google here as well (see chart below). Facebook also beats Yahoo in terms of total minutes spent on the site (116 million versus 101 million) and average minutes per visitor (247 minutes a month versus 170 for Yahoo).

  • Linux Foundation: mobile Linux needs “magic” to beat Apple

Apple turned up the heat in the mobile market last week when it unveiled its new iPad mobile computing device. Jim Zemlin, the executive director of the Linux Foundation, has responded to Apple’s product launch with a candid appraisal of Linux’s strengths and weaknesses in the mobile market relative to Apple’s mobile operating system.

Zemlin, one of the Linux community’s most vocal advocates, speculated last year that Linux could eventually become the dominant operating system for consumer electronics products. His argument was based largely on the assertion that Linux’s lack of licensing costs will make it the most practical and affordable option for hardware vendors.

  • Federal agents find 14 suspected illegal immigrants in Reseda ‘drop house’

     Drophouse01

Federal agents Monday were investigating a suspected “drop house” in Reseda, where 14 suspected illegal immigrants, mostly Central Americans, were being held against their will, officials said.

Los Angeles police responded late Sunday to the single-story stucco home in the 7900 block of Newcastle Avenue after one of the captives dialed 911 on a cellphone and reported that captors were not allowing anyone to leave, authorities said.

“The smugglers were attempting to extort more money from their relatives before releasing them or moving them to onward destinations,” said Virginia Kice, a spokeswoman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Interviews with the 14 — including 10 men and four women — revealed that smugglers had charged them between $5,000 and $7,000 each to transport them into the United States, Kice said. The prices are typical, she said.

It is not uncommon for human-smugglers, known as coyotes, to hold their charges against their will until full payment is received, often from relatives already in the United States, officials say.

In this case, Kice said, the coyotes appear to have fled once law enforcement moved in, leaving the migrants alone in the home.

“No one in custody appears to be complicit with the smuggling plot,” Kice said.

The 14 were comprised of 10 Guatemalans, three Salvadorans and one citizen of the Dominican Republic, Kice said. Two were juveniles. All appeared to be illegal immigrants, the spokeswoman noted.

All were in relatively good health, Kice said, showing no outward signs of trauma. None complained of mistreatment, other than being held against their will at the home, she said.

If the smuggling case advances, some could be held as witnesses, while others will be processed for return  to their home countries.

“We’re following any leads in the case and we’ll see where that takes us,” Kice said.

No weapons were found at the scene, Kice said, but investigators did discover ledgers and other paperwork likely linked to the smuggling scheme.

Smugglers typically use such drop houses as staging areas for immigrants recently smuggled in via the U.S.-Mexico border.

The migrants generally remain at the homes until the smugglers arrange to move them to their ultimate destinations.
Migrants depend on the coyotes for their transport but face being victimized by them.

Human trafficking is a major industry along the U.S.-Mexico border, with tentacles stretching throughout the United States, Mexico, Central America and elsewhere.

Smugglers seek full payment before final delivery of their clients, authorities say, sometimes holding migrants hostage until the bill is paid.

In some cases, Kice said, officials have found safe houses locked from the outside and with all the windows barred to prevent anyone from leaving.

Cross-border traffic of undocumented immigrants has slowed as the U.S. economy slumped, officials say, but many continue to come north illegally, often seeking to reunite with loved ones already in the United States.

Currently, Kice said, authorities discover about one drop house a month in the Los Angeles area. Many others are never found, as the illegal immigrants are moved on to U.S. cities and towns, never attracting the attention of law enforcement.

TDK’s main business is producing not too sexy electronic materials and data-storage media, which means the company announcing [JP] new headphones today is a rare occasion. The TH-WR700, to be marketed under Imation’s “TDK Life on Record” brand, are wireless headphones (2.4GHz) that are based on Kleer (not Bluetooth) technology.

TDK says they chose Kleer’s wireless solution over Bluetooth because the former technology produces less noise when listening to music (TDK has measured a difference of 40db on average). The TH-WR700 features 32Ω impedance, 20Hz–20kHz frequency response, and 108 dB/mW sensitivity.

It comes with a small transmitter that needs to be plugged into the player in question and makes sure you can listen to music from up to 10m away. TDK says that the unit is designed so that it can be used with the iPhone as well (the company isn’t specifying which iPhone models are supported).

The headphones go on sale in Japan on March 1 for $190. TDK hasn’t said anything yet about international sales plans.

Liquid cooling is a funny thing. Generally each specific part needs a specific cooling adapter as there isn’t many one-size-fits-all solution. That’s still the case for most components, but CoolIT now has GPUs covered.

The key here is the inexpensive, swappable interposer plates that attach directly to the graphics card. The other two parts, the water block and liquid plate, are universal and should work in nearly any system. There are currently interposer plates for most graphics cards with CoolIT committing to keep up the product line to support cards as they are released.

But as of writing, there is no word on its cost or release date. Most of CoolIT’s products are reasonably priced though, so this one will likely be no different. [CoolIT via OhGizmo]

  • Google Email Uploader for Mac available now

    Filed under:

The Gmail of a few years ago was quite primitive in comparison to the current incarnation. Still, threading and a nearly-bottomless cup of storage space made it appealing despite early privacy fears. I use Gmail extensively nowadays, complete with a bunch of tweaks, add-ons and lab components. Problem was, all my old email still lived on my “antique” addresses, and worse, I couldn’t access those emails within the handy search tool in Gmail. Google Apps came along and while you could now better control email (using your own domain, for example), the same problem existed: your old email didn’t migrate to your Google Apps account.

Enter the Google Email Uploader for Mac. It’s a simple tool allowing you to upload your old mail to your Google Apps account. That’s it! Apple Mail, Eudora and Thunderbird all seem to be supported, but note there are some real limits if you have a ton of email. Here’s what Google says to keep in mind:

    1. Start small. Due to server upload rate limits, the uploader is fast for up to 500 messages, and slow thereafter (1 message per second.) Pick a small subset of your mailboxes when first trying out the uploader.
    2. Be patient. Even after uploading completes, the server requires a while to process uploads.
    3. Do assign a custom label (this is checked by default.) This lets you effectively “undo” the uploads later by deleting all messages with the label. Deleting the label itself will not delete the mail.
    4. If you have many mailboxes in your archives, creating labels for each mailbox probably is not a good idea, as this could create far too many labels.
