  • BGR Breaks It Down: How to Shop For a New Phone [Retail]

Absolutely dread going to your location wireless provider’s store and having to be social? If it’s one of your worst nightmares, hopefully this will help you change that.

Guest post by a “connect” in the wireless industry.

    Do:
Buy at the end of the month or during bad weather. It’s funny, but the best time to buy a phone is at the end of the month. Every store has a quota to hit and the sales reps are a lot more tempted to make a good deal if it’s the end of the month. They’ll most likely be offering better discounts to try and get those final sales for their quota. Also, on days when the weather is really bad, the store has probably been slow most of the day and the reps are bored. We’re not kidding. They’ll want to talk to you and want to sell you something. The sales reps have probably made nothing in terms of money for that day and they’ll be eager to try and make a deal for you.

    Take the features:
Use them as a bargaining tool. This is a great way to get extra discounts or deals on a phone. Tell the rep you’ll sign up for the data plan (if not already required based on the phone like a smartphone) plus insurance and other extra features if they’ll cut you a small deal on the equipment. ARPU (Average Revenue Per Unit) is always a huge goal for managers and employees, and it adds a large amount to our commission check. You can always take these features off (if they’re not contracted like the smartphone data plans) if you don’t use them. Just know that most wireless carriers require features to be active for a certain amount of time or else the representative won’t get the commission from it.

Also, try to find a rep that is passionate. It might seem like common sense, but we can’t tell you how many people just enter the store and mosey on over to any boring dope and expect greatness. Look for a rep that looks happy to be there. That rep will most likely be an upfront person and be detailed on equipment and plan pricing. If the rep is trained well enough, he or she will know about other carrier’s pricing and plans as well, making this much easier on you.

Ask the representative to be blunt and honest – telling your rep from the get-go to be straightforward and to-the-point will save both of you a lot of trouble. They’ll get the job done faster and you’ll get the info you’re asking for without all the corporate mumbo-jumbo that they’re supposed to shove in your head.

Plus, if you don’t already have a phone in mind, ask the representative what phone they use. If they’re carrying it, it’s most likely a decent phone. Most likely.

Sales reps can usually budge on the equipment pricing, accessories, or waiving activation fees depending on whether you’re at a corporate store or an indirect dealer. But something they can’t do is budge on the plan pricing; that’s something no one can adjust – only the retention department over the phone can.

If you see a better price at another store or online, ask for a price match. This requires a print out of the ad that you saw, but you’d be surprised how many people don’t care, or don’t come prepared. Corporate stores can only price match in this fashion, too. Buying at a corporate store versus a 3rd party store (Costco, Sam’s Club, Radio Shack) has its benefits such as better trained employees and usually original/more encompassing warranties.

    Don’t:
Don’t threaten to leave your carrier if the representatives you’re talking to don’t give you a good deal. Sales reps know your contract length and they know you aren’t going to pay that $200 ETF to get little Timmy off your plan and into an iPhone because they won’t give you $50 off that dumbphone he wants. Things like telling them that you’ve been with them for 10+ years and you deserve 5 BlackBerry Bolds for free will only frustrate the poor guy. When it comes to equipment cost, the amount of years you’ve been with a carrier as a customer doesn’t mean too much. Also don’t say that you’ll get a better deal by switching from x-carrier to y-carrier if you don’t know for sure if it’s exactly true. A good rep knows when a customer is lying and they’ll pretty much be done trying to work with you at that point.

Remember to play it smart. Don’t try and ask for a smartphone without a data plan. That’s like buying a brand new BMW and not wanting to put premium gas in it. The reps most likely can’t make that happen due to restrictions with the way those plans work. Also never ask to speak to the manager while negotiating for a better deal. You’re undermining the representative and are only going to annoy the manager.

Upgrades (phone discounts you get when extending your current contract with your existing carrier) mean pretty little to the sales reps in terms of commission. The rep doesn’t make much on these kinds of contracts and if you’re going to give them a really hard time about pricing, they’ll either pass you to another rep or put 0% effort into trying to help you out.

    Tips from reps we know:
    • “I’ve had high maintenance customers bring a store employee coffee or thank you card after working really hard for them. Doing even the smallest things like that will get us to do pretty much anything you want in the future or fix any problem you might have down the road.”
    • “Reps work on commission; it’s how they pay their bills, feed their kids, and pretty much survive. It’s really aggravating when you spend 45 minutes in the store talking to us about plans and pricing and then come back the next day to sign up with our co-worker on our day off.”
    • “Reps are people too. We have our good and our bad days. Act like a decent human being and you’ll be treated with the same respect.”

All in all, pretty standard stuff though like we said, you’d be surprised how many people don’t really get the big picture. Hopefully this makes shopping for a new phone, wireless plan, and even carrier a little easier on you the next time around!

While this post tried to encompass all wireless carriers in the U.S., some have different policies and practices and it’s best to visit their respective website to learn about plan/feature requirements, and any sales/rebates they have available before you go to the store.

  • Box for Verizon’s Devour Hits the Web

The box and accompanying art for Verizon’s upcoming Devour have made their way online, leading us to believe we should be hearing something official before too long.  Based on the picture, we can see that the final color appears to be the silver finish that was spotted a few weeks back. There seems to be a heavy focus on MOTOBLUR’s features with the Devour.  It’s not too surprising though seeing as how this will be Verizon’s first handset with the user experience. So now we know the look, most of the specs, and what the box looks like.  All we’re waiting for now, is an announcement as to price and release.

  • Don’t Worry: Prosperity Is Just Around The Corner

Anyone who has followed perpetually troubled companies has no doubt experienced one of their favorite (and surprisingly effective) tricks:

Continually publish rosy forecasts of future recovery that sound great at the time but never actually materialize.  As the happy forecasts fail to materialize, revise them, pushing the recovery to the next year.  And so on.

This trick, of course, is not only a favorite of companies.  Wall Street analysts and governments love it, too.

In the early years of the Great Depression, for example, Herbert Hoover was fond of saying that prosperity was just around the corner.

And it was.  As long as you measured in decades.

Today, President Obama is selling his new budget.  It includes a horrifying deficit for this year, but then a smaller deficit in all the following years.  Prosperity, in other words, is just around the corner.  Check out this chart from the WSJ (click through for interactive version)

    2010 White House Deficit Forecast

But it was just around the corner last year, too.  Check out this chart from the WSJ that shows what President Obama’s soothsayers foresaw for future deficits at this time last year:

    Budget Deficit 2009

Last year at this time, 2009 was going to be the worst year, followed by a happy reduction in the deficit in 2010 and 2011 and so on.

This year, 2010 is going to be the worst year, followed by a happy reduction in the deficit in 2011 and 2012.  And so on.

    And next year?

Never mind.  Just rest assured: Prosperity is just around the corner.

(This isn’t an Obama problem, by the way.  President Bush was saying the same thing.)

  • AT&T and Sprint 3G Versions of Nexus One In the Works [Nexus One]

Separate pieces of evidence have popped up lately that point to Nexus One being available through AT&T and Sprint, possibly in the near future.

While it’s already possible to purchase an unlocked Nexus One—albeit for $530—to date you’d be unable to run it on AT&T or Sprint’s 3G network. That’s because while the Nexus One supports GSM radio frequency bands, it only supports T-Mobile’s 3G network in the United States.

What’s changed? For starters, an FCC filing from Google for a Nexus One that will run on WCDMA Bands I, II and V, which are the bands that AT&T and several Canadian carriers use for 3G data. If you tried to use your Nexus one on AT&T today, you’d be relegated to EDGE or 2.5G. Not good!

As for a Sprint version, there have been rumblings for a while, but a recent inquiry to Sprint Customer Solutions about Nexus One availability garnered the following response:

Thank you for contacting Sprint regarding the nexus one.

Unfortunately, this handset model is not on offer as of now.

Once it is launched, you will see promotional campaigns related to the
launch date, cost and the features of the handset on our Web site and
    other promotional media.

Thank you for showing interest in our products & services. Please let us
know if you would like us to assist you with anything else.

Emphasis added, and seemingly confirmation that the Nexus One will be coming to Sprint.

And honestly, it should. The unlocked purchase option is a fine idea to get the device in as many people’s hands as possible, but it’s totally impractical for the price, especially with no 3G support from other carriers. [FCC via CNET]

  • GM, Tengzhong extend Hummer deal deadline… again

Earlier last month General Motors suspended production of Hummer vehicles pending approval from the Chinese government with regards to its deal to sell the brand to Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industry Machinery. Well, it doesn’t seem like Hummer vehicles will re-enter production anytime soon because GM and Tengzhong have extended the deal deadline to the end of February.

“GM and Tengzhong agreed to extend the deadline to the end of February,” Tengzhong said in a statement, adding that the company was waiting for approval from Beijing to finalize the deal.

Hummer boss Jim Taylor said the transaction approval process was not proceeding as quickly as originally expected.

  • The Grammys Performances: Who Takes the Cake? [POLL]

Thank god for bikini waxes, right Gaga?

As we all know, The Grammys engulfed the television sets of many last night for an evening full of awe-inspiring musical performances and the outrageously and glamorously dressed.   From the minute I glued myself to my couch with my left-over Chinese food to the minute Taylor Swift accepted her award for Album of The Year, the Grammys did not seize to amaze me and leave me in an abyss of un-answered questions.

    Let us recap.

Who was the kid Rihanna and Jay-Z brought up to accept their award; a mysterious love child?

And what happened to my home girl, Lady Gaga? I was pleasantly freaked out by her presence only once. Couldn’t the Grammys have chosen one of the five awards presented to be accepted by Gagaloo herself?

Where was Britney Spears? Where was Kanye? Why didn’t he drop down from the rafters every (effing) time Taylor won an award?

And let’s talk about water acrobatics… in the air…. while singing….with a sparkly vagina; why doesn’t Pink get more credit? Or any credit?

And, really, while no one told me I’d need my 3-D glasses for the MJ tribute (and watching without it gave me a headache), why was everyone at the Grammys wearing them? I mean, isn’t being there already 3-D?

But the biggest question of all (well, besides why people are still giving Taylor Swift awards) is who had the best performance of them all last night. Because that’s what it’s all about, right? I mean, I thought the Grammys were about giving awards, but I guess I was wrong because there were, like, 4 acceptance speeches the whole night. But the performances were some of the best I’ve seen since Janet flashed her nip at the Super Bowl.

Pink and her acrobatic theatrical performance to  ‘Glitter in the Air’:

Lady Gaga & Elton John’s opening performance to “Speechless”:

    The Michael Jackson Tribute:

    Beyonce’s “If I Were a Boy”:

Black Eyed Peas’ futuristic rendition of “Imma Be”:

Jaime Fox and T-Pain’s “Blame It”:

So who’s performance was the best of the night? My vote is for Pink. (Britney can’t even dance and sing at the same time, but Pink can hang from ribbon suspended from the ceiling? Amazing.) What do you think?

Recalls happen all the time in the auto industry. Some are glitches that affect things like window switches, radio buttons and seat recliners. Others, however, involve more complicated components that directly affect your safety while driving. It’s important that all recalls are handled well by auto manufacturers so that every owner of a recalled vehicle has the opportunity to get his or her vehicle fixed in a timely manner. Most of the time, that’s exactly what happens. Sometimes, it doesn’t. The situation involving Toyota vehicles that may experience sudden unintended acceleration is one of those times.

As things stand, the information out there regarding two major recalls of select Toyota vehicles – one for floormats and another for sticking accelerator pedals – is confusing, so we’ve assembled the Ultimate Toyota Recall Guide for every current owner of an affected Toyota vehicle and anyone considering the purchase of a Toyota vehicle in the near future. We hope it aids your understanding of what’s going on, though there are still many unanswered questions so keep coming back to it as we update its content on a daily basis.

  • Long Term Oxygen Therapy – A Definition

One way of highlighting the importance of oxygen would be to quickly outline what our bodies need to stay alive and more interestingly how long we can survive in their absence This list would have the following:

    1. Food – You can last a few weeks without any food before dying.
    2. Water – A few days
    3. Oxygen – A few minutes.

In each of these cases severe bodily damage occurs before death creeps in and this means that in the case of oxygen there is precious little time available before irreparable damage is caused. Oxygen occurs in a natural state in our environment mixed in the air we breathe. At sea level and in the absence of pollution, oxygen represents approximately 21% of the air around us.When our respiratory system is working properly this amount of oxygen is perfect for our health and oxygen requirements. There are however many cases where chronic lung damage is present and a shortage of oxygen intake happens, causing insufficient oxygen saturation. There are various potential causes for this, the most common one is Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, which in turn is caused mainly by smoking. In these cases long term oxygen is prescribed. (Note: The Federal Drug Administration classifies oxygen as a drug and it must therefore be prescribed).

It is a long term therapy because supplemental oxygen will have to be supplied from that time onwards – it is a “forever” scenario.

The oxygen is delivered directly to the patient through a nose cannula or oxygen mask at a prescribed flow rate and in a much purer form. When COPD is present the lungs have been damaged so the inhalation process brings insufficient oxygen – and the exhalation process does not clear out all the air. Imagine a glass that holds a pint of water, but you can never pour in a full pint as it already has half a pint. You can only drink half of what is there – and yet you need a full pint to quench your thirst. Something similar to this happens with the air and the lungs, and the result is insufficient oxygen saturating the blood.

The way to increase oxygen blood saturation is by supplying an increased amount of oxygen – so instead of 21% pure oxygen in the air that is breathed in, concentrated oxygen at 90% plus is given. Some patients are prescribed with oxygen on a 24 hour basis and others for shorter periods depending on the diagnosis.

  • Beyonce emotional after Grammy wins

Beyonce has insisted that she will remember last night’s Grammy Awards ceremony for the rest of her life. The singer set a new record for the most trophies won by a solo female artist in one night after scooping six gongs at the annual show. Speaking to ET Online, she said: ‘It’s very emotional. I’m trying to hold it in because I can see right now, looking around, that this is something I will never ever forget and this night is very surreal for me.’

When asked how proud husband Jay-Z was, she replied: ‘I’m so lucky to have everyone in my life and to have genuine love and friends and family and support. I think it’s the most important thing. The Grammys are amazing, but to have the support means everything.’ She added that it was ‘wonderful’ to see Michael Jackson’s children accepting his ‘Lifetime Achievement’ gong, adding: ‘It’s just wonderful to continue celebrating his life and legacy.’

  • Orange County fishermen angle for unusual catch: Giant squid

Squid An invasion of giant squid in Orange County has fishermen and women hitting the waters off Newport Beach, angling for an unusual catch.

The squid, some up to 60 pounds and 4 feet long, were first caught Thursday afternoon, and anglers began making twilight expeditions Friday night to catch the nocturnal sea creatures, which spend daytime close to the ground and rise to the surface at night.

Robert Woodbury, manager at Newport Landing Sportfishing, said anglers who signed up to fish on one of the company’s evening excursions had caught about 400 squid since Friday night.
The squid, which tend to run in the 20- to 40-pound range, are somewhat elusive, tending to follow a food source, such as anchovies, rather than a season.

It’s unclear when the squid will leave the area, but as long as they stay, fishermen say they will chase them every night. The anglers come in two main types, Woodbury said: Those hungry for the relatively pricey delicacy, and the sports angler eager to tangle with a feistier sea creature.

“Most of the fish we catch are better to eat, but they don’t give you much of a fight,” Woodbury said.

These squid, on the other hand, do not  stop struggling even after getting hooked and tossed into the boat.

"They’re trying to crawl around and blow ink all over everybody,” he said.

The squid make for a messier prize, but that is part of the fun, he said.

“When they’re lifted out of the water … they become a giant squirt gun,” Woodbury said. “Chances are you’re gonna take a faceful or a chestful of water – and probably ink – when you pull them out … everybody laughs.”

  • Dow Now Up Over 100 Points, Commodities In Control

The Dow is on a roll, currently up around 100 points. Though investors should be careful, as the same thing happened last week only to have the DJIA plummet a few dozen points.

The NASDAQ is up 14 points and the S&P 500 is up about 13.

It’s a great day for commodities as well.  Gold is about to hit the $1100 an ounce mark. Silver is up 1.8% at $16.49 an ounce.

Oil is also on the rise, up $1.16 to $74.05 in mid-day trading.

  • Samsung Producing First Integrated Touchscreen AMOLED Panels Starting Next Month [Guts]

Samsung Mobile Display has announced that they’re going to begin mass production of the world’s first 3.3-inch touch-embedded AMOLED panels next month. That means goodbye heavy glass display, and hello thinner, lighter, brighter phones.

The technology Samsung has developed places .001mm thin touch sensors on-cell on a 3.3-inch WVGA AMOLED, between the panel’s substrate and the bottom polarizer film. The result is that you don’t need the touch-sensing glass panel that currently sits above your phone’s display anymore. The technology could also be integrated into cameras to provide a brighter display and/or longer battery life.

We’ve been enamored with AMOLED before, but this is the first time we’ve seen such a practical application hit mass production. Exciting! More so when we actually start to see some of these products hit the market—and see how much they cost. [Korea IT Times via OLED Info via Engadget]

We’re waiting for an official word about Volvo’s supposed sale to Geely, but before the Swedish baton is passed, the show must go on. The original S60 was nearly a decade old before Volvo wound down production, and the new car is on the cusp of being unveiled, likely at the Geneva Auto Show next month. We’ve seen shots of the new S60’s exterior, and the evolutionary changes have us wanting to get our paws on the latest bread-and-butter Volvo sedan. Now we’ve got a teaser video to whet our appetites further.

Volvo’s latest tease shows some sort of bluetooth-headsetted secret agent tearing along in a tunnel and then zooming around in the desert. Most importantly, though, we see a few glimpses of the interior. We don’t get to see much, and what we do see looks very much like what you’d expect from the Swedes – from the seats, to the pictogram HVAC controls, to the gauges – it’s Volvo’s signature style inside. Two more videos will be coming on February 9th and 17th, at which point we’ll likely start agitating to get one in the Autoblog Garage. In the meantime, jump for the video.
