  • Dulux to Release new Eco-Friendly Paint; Cuts Water & Carbon Footprint in Half

dulux ecosure paintDulux Ecosense, a new line of eco-friendly paint to be released in March of this year, has significantly less impact on the environment than other Dulux paints, according to the company.  The Ecosense Matt has 50 percent less embodied carbon, 50 percent less embodied water, 40 percent less waste and almost zero volatile organic compounds when compared to the Dulux Standard Matt from 2008.  In addition, its packaging will contain 20 percent recycled content.  This technology came out of a 3 year research study that looked at lowering the impacts of paint over its life cycle, with five areas of focus: suppliers, formulation and production, packaging and delivery, paint use, and end-of-life.

  • GM wants next CEO to come from within the company

Last week, General Motors announced that Ed Whitacre will continue on as Chief Executive Officer of the automaker. According to sources familiar with the situation, GM is working on developing an internal replacement for Whitacre in a couple of years. The source said that a search for a new CEO from outside GM failed.

Insiders said that any top-level executive at GM has a shot at the job including executives from GM’s overseas operations. However, if GM still fails to find a winner, the board will once again commission a new search for an outside candidate.

Sources said that when the board originally commissioned a search for a new CEO after getting rid of Fritz Henderson, they were unable to find good candidates who were willing to work under the pay restrictions imposed by the U.S. government after GM’s bailout.

“This place needs some stability,” Whitacre said last week after announcing his official position as CEO. “I guess that’s me.”

  • Miley Cyrus Grammy Dress Auction For Haitian Earthquake Relief

Miley Cyrus is joining efforts to help the victims of last month’s ravaging earthquake in Haiti — the teen sensation is raising money by selling the dress she wore to Sunday night’s 52nd Grammy Awards.

The 17-year-old stepped out on the Grammy red carpet in Los Angeles Sunday night wearing a teal-colored frock designed by Herve Leger. As stunning as it was, she’s decided to put up the gown for sale as part of an internet auction launching on eBay.com later this week.

Miley says she’s ben deeply moved by the massive tremor that devastated the already impoverished island nation on Jan. 12 and is also joining Quincy Jones and Lionel Richie’s re-recording of the 1985 classic “We Are The World.”

She tells USA Today: “I’m going to auction it (the dress) off on eBay for the Red Cross. It’s the little things you can do. I think it’s really important that everybody come (sic) together because disaster relief isn’t just now. It’s how we’re going to help years from now. We have to restore an entire place. It just can’t be one person, one foundation, one group of people. All people have to come together.”

  • Siegel: 2010 Will Be Great For Stocks, And A Rate-Hike Will Only Cause A Two-Week Market Swoon

    jeremysiegel tbi

Wharton finance professor Jeremy Siegel is maintaining his uber-bullish stance for 2010.

In an interview last month, he said equities could gain easily gain 10% over the year.

That is despite an inevitable rate hike, which will scare stocks down for a week or two, before investors recognize the hike as a sign that the economy is improving.

Another thing to watch for, says the professor, is a downturn on the bonds market, as risk premium dissipates and rising interest rates hurt value.

  • Short campaign season closes with Tuesday’s primary

DECATUR — Voters who think their ballots don’t matter could be sorely mistaken in Tuesday’s primary election.

Mix the high number of candidates with the short campaign season and experts predict that any one candidate could struggle to receive the majority of voter support.

“Every vote is going to count for the candidate you might favor,” said Steve Bean, Macon County Clerk.

With the primary date coming just one month after the holiday season, voters have had less than 30 days to acquaint themselves with the multiple candidates asking for their votes.

Republican voters must choose between seven gubernatorial candidates, six lieutenant governor candidates and six U.S. Senate candidates. Democrats must choose between six candidates for lieutenant governor and five for the U.S. Senate.

“It’s going to create some kind of ambivalence or confusion for whom to vote for,” said Larry Klugman, political science professor at Richland Community College.

The results of today’s primary will lead Illinoisans into a general election season where stakes are high for politicians, and the issues are serious for voters.

  • Video: Motor Trend gets first ride in 2011 Ford Mustang V6, Camaro and Challenger compared

2011 Ford Mustang V6 – Click above for high-res image gallery

The 2010 Ford Mustang was by all accounts a pretty significant refresh compared to the 2009 model, with a vastly superior interior, better ride and handling and, some would say, improved outward aesthetics. But there was still something missing. The Blue Oval used carry-over powertrains, and in the case of the 210-horsepower V6 model, nothing changed.

For the 2011 model year, Ford is rectifying that mistake two-fold. The 5.0-liter V8 gets a great deal of press for its impressive 412 hp and 390 pound-feet of twist, but many members of the Autoblog team are just as excited to get their hands on the new 305 hp, 280 lb-ft 3.7-liter V6 offering. We’ll likely have to wait a bit longer to curb that urge, but the folks over at Motor Trend have already been given a taste.

MT‘s Arthur St. Antoine was invited to Ford’s Arizona proving grounds to spend some seat time behind the wheel in the passenger seat of the updated ponycar, and though he didn’t get to drive he liked what he experienced. St. Antoine calls the new V6 mill “plenty strong,” adding that the engine is smoother, stronger and sounds better than the outgoing 4.0-liter six ever could. After some gentle strolling around Arizona, St. Antoine meandered back over to the proving grounds for some laps in a Performance Package V6 model with vehicle dynamics engineer (and Top Gun-level driver) Jamie Cullen. From the perspective of the right seat, the 3.7-liter Stang reportedly was able to handle anything thrown its way with flat cornering, strong braking and near constant contact between the tires and the track. Head over to Motor Trend to read the report from the passenger seat and make the jump for the video.

  • News.com Prevents Falsely Accused Grandmother Of Getting Kicked Off The Internet By The MPAA

One of the problems we’ve had with the whole “three strikes” concept that would kick people off the internet due to accusations, not convictions, of file sharing, is the fact that we hear all the time about innocent users accused of file sharing. Greg Sandoval, over at News.com recently came across a grandmother who was falsely accused multiple times of file sharing, and her ISP, Qwest, was threatening to kick her off the internet. We had not heard that Qwest had signed on with a “three strikes” program, so it’s a bit of news that it’s one of the companies who will accept bogus accusations. Not only that, but Qwest even told her that no other provider would grant her service because Qwest would let those other service providers “know her name and what she did.” Thanks, Qwest!

The problem, of course, was that Cathi Paradiso didn’t share any of the movies or TV shows she was accused of sharing, and she works from home as a recruiter — so losing her internet access would be devastating. But the only way she got Qwest to back down was because Sandoval and News.com became interested in the story and convinced Qwest to look deeper. But if Paradiso hadn’t been able to draw attention to herself from the press, she would have had no recourse. There was no one she could appeal to, and no official process to respond to the bogus claims of Hollywood. She got lucky that News.com was willing to pick up her story and contact Qwest, but what about anyone else threatened with bogus notices? Meanwhile, BayTSP, the company whose “evidence” has been shown to be flimsy and easily falsified in the past, stands by accusing her of file sharing, saying it was her own fault for having an open WiFi network, suggesting there’s something inherently wrong with sharing your WiFi. Yes, the company stands by its false accusation. Nice company.

  • February is national children’s dental health month

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month and many people are unaware of the important role early dental care plays in children’s overall health.

The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that parents take action early to insure the health of their children’s teeth because attitudes and habits established at an early age are critical in maintaining good oral health throughout life.

    Dental Visits

The ADA recommends regular dental check-ups, including a visit to the dentist within six months of the eruption of the first tooth, and no later than the child’s first birthday. Preventive care such as cleanings and fluoride treatment provide your child with “smile” insurance.

Routine dental exams uncover problems that can be treated in the early stages, when damage is minimal and restorations may be small. When necessary, X-rays are taken to see how the teeth are developing and to spot hidden decay.

Early Childhood Caries (Baby Bottle Tooth Decay)

Baby bottle tooth decay can destroy your child’s teeth. It occurs when a child is frequently exposed to sugary liquids such as milk, including breast milk, fruit juice and other sweet liquids. The ADA recommends the following steps to prevent your child from getting baby bottle tooth decay.

    • Begin clearing your baby’s mouth during the first few days after birth. After every feeding, wipe the baby’s gums with a damp washcloth or gauze pad to remove plaque.
    • Never allow your child to nurse or breast feed for prolonged periods and don’t give him or her a bottle with milk, formula, sugar water or fruit juice during naps or at night in bed.
    • Encourage children to drink from a cup by their first birthday.
    • Discourage frequent use of a training cup.
    • Help your child develop good eating habits early and choose sensible, nutritious snacks.

    Mouth Protectors

Any child involved in a recreational activity, such as soccer, hockey, football, roller blading, riding a scooter and even bicycling should wear a mouth protector. There are “stock” mouth protectors available in stores and a better-fitting variety, which are custom fitted by your dentist. Ask your dentist about using a mouth protector.

    Dental Emergencies

Knowing how to handle your child’s dental emergency can mean the difference between saving or losing a tooth. The ADA recommends the following tips on what to do for your child in case of:

Knocked-Out Tooth: Hold the tooth by the crown and rinse off the root of the tooth in water if it’s dirty. Do not scrub it or remove any attached tissue fragments. If possible, gently insert and hold the tooth in its socket. If that isn’t possible, put the tooth in a cup of milk and get to the dentist as quickly as possible. Remember to take the tooth with you!

Toothache: Rinse your mouth with warm water to clean it out. Gently use dental floss or an interdental cleaner to ensure that there is no food or other debris caught between the teeth. Never put aspirin or any other painkiller against the gums near the aching tooth because it may burn the gum tissue. If the pain persists, contact your dentist.

Bitten Lip or Tongue: Clean the area gently with a cloth and apply cold compresses to reduce any swelling. If the bleeding doesn’t stop, go to a hospital emergency room immediately.

Give Kids A Smile Centerpiece to National Children’s Dental Health Month

While Give Kids A Smile is an annual centerpiece to National Children’s Dental Health Month and is observed every year on the first Friday in February, National Children’s Dental Health Month is celebrated during the entire month of February.

National Children’s Dental Health Month focuses on providing oral health education to all children despite their economic status.

Give Kids A Smile is designed to provide education, preventive and restorative care to children from low-income families who do not have access to care and to encourage parents, health professionals and policymakers to address this important health issue.

    About the American Dental Association

The not-for-profit ADA is the nation’s largest dental association, representing more than 157,000 dentist members. The premier source of oral health information, the ADA has advocated for the public’s health and promoted the art and science of dentistry since 1859.

The ADA’s state-of-the-art research facilities develop and test dental products and materials that have advanced the practice of dentistry and made the patient experience more positive. The ADA Seal of Acceptance long has been a valuable and respected guide to consumer dental care products.

The monthly Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA) is the ADA’s flagship publication and the best-read scientific journal in dentistry.

  • Neil Patrick Harris To Host “The Cube” Game Show

Is it just me or could you totally see Neil Patrick Harris as a modern-day Bob Barker? Ok, maybe that’s a bit of stretch, but I do think the kid who first warmed our hearts as Doogie Howser MD would make an excellent game show host.

The star of CBS’ How I Met Your Mother is in discussions to host and executive produce an American adaptation of the popular UK game show The Cube, TheWrap.com said Monday. A smash in Britain, the show places contestants in a small plastic cube to induce stress while they perform physical tasks.

Insiders close to negotiations say NPH will fly to London later this year to record a pilot for the show — which would air on CBS. The Cube is the latest hosting gig for Neil, who has already served as MC for the Emmys, the Tonys, and the TV Land Awards.

  • Check Out The Breathtaking Speed At Which Countries Are Headed To The Debt Crisis Abyss

McKinsey Quarterly’s State of the Day takes a look private and public sector debt by country as a percentage of GDP.

You’ve probably seen these stats elsewhere in some form or another, but what makes this one particular interesting is the way it shows the change. The UK’s race towards the top — with debt-to-GDP having grown 156% since 2000 — is stunning.

South Korea’s 93% surge is also startling and, we’d guess, not getting enough attention.

Japan on the other hand is in the nosebleed territory, but then, it’s been there for a long time, and the story hasn’t changed.

  • Man claiming to be brother of former Mexican president arrested in financial scams

A suspected financial scammer who claimed he was the brother of former Mexican President Vicente Fox was to be arraigned Monday on charges of stealing more than $600,000 through bogus investment plans, according to the L.A. County district attorney’s office.

Alfredo Trujillo Fox, 66, was arrested Saturday on a felony complaint and was being held on $1 million bail, said Jane Robison, a spokeswoman for the district attorney’s office. He was scheduled to be arraigned Monday on 15 counts of grand theft, 15 counts of unqualified sales of securities, 15 counts of misrepresentation in sales of securities and two counts of tax evasion.

The suspect said he was the brother of the former Mexican president, but investigators have found no evidence to support that statement, Robison said.

The district attorney’s office launched an investigation in June 2008 into allegations the suspect offered bogus investments between March 2006 and August 2007. He allegedly promised high returns on investments and accepted money for non-existent projects.

Among the schemes  were land purchases in Los Angeles and Mexico, short-term loans to his company, Xanadu Mexico International, and a cellphone venture capital project, said officials with the district attorney’s office.

If convicted, he could face more than 27 years in state prison.

PASCO, Wash. – Nearly 500 people from around the area attended College Night 2010. The annual event is hosted by Columbia Basin College and focuses on helping high school seniors learn about higher education.

Wednesday night they learned about CBC, its academic and program offerings and financial aide and scholarship opportunities. Diversity and Outreach Vice President, Martin Valedez, says last year they gave away $274,000 in scholarships and next year they hope to give more. “We offer all types of help. We have our financial aide office here with information about financial aide, about loans and about all types of scholarships. So there should be some sort of financing for all students,” said Valedez.

CBC will also offer College Goal Sunday.  The event will help students and parents by answering financial aid questions and helping them fill out financial aid forms. The event takes place this Sunday from 2-4 p.m. at the CBC campus.

College students came to Columbia Basin College today to learn more about federal financial aid and scholarship opportunities.

College Goal Sunday event is held at about 18 different spots around the state and CBC organizers tell us learning about the FAFSA is an important step for students because it’s the gateway for financial aid benefits.

“We’ve been doing it now for three years, and each time we just enjoy helping the families come and help them get their FAFSAs done.  (And then) it gets them started and it makes us feel good,” Ceci Ratliff, CBC Financial Services.

Now the deadline at CBC for paperwork and FASFA forms to be turned in is April 10.  Ratliff says it is better to complete those forms as soon as possible.

  • ASCBC to show ‘The Price of Pleasure’ tonight

    NEWS RELEASE
    Feb. 1, 2010                                                           Contact: Erica Jesberger, 544-4916

Hollywood currently releases 11,000 adult movies per year, more than 20 times the mainstream movie production. Worldwide sex industry sales for 2006 were reported to be $97 billion; in comparison, Microsoft reported sales of $44.8 billion in 2006. A study of exotic dancers found that 100 percent had been physically assaulted in the clubs where they were employed, including attempted vaginal penetration, attempted rape, and rape. Twenty-five to 30 percent of male students surveyed in 1983 admitted there is some likelihood they would rape a woman if they could be assured of getting away with it. This increased to 57 percent after exposure to sexually violent images, particularly sexually violent images depicting women enjoying rape. Is the price of pleasure too high?

The Price of Pleasure is a mature documentary about the rapidly growing pornography industry and its effects on American society. Segments from the film will be shown at 6 p.m. tonight, Monday, February 1 in room L102 of the Columbia Basin College Pasco campus. Following the viewing, an examination of the industry’s racist and sexist practices as well as the changes it is bringing upon American culture will be discussed by one of the film’s academic commentators, Robert Jensen, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Topics to be covered include the effects of pornography on an individual’s ability to have normal relationships, the psychology of addiction, and social issues such as domestic violence, which may be attributed to this growing phenomenon in America. This event is designed to help students think critically about the effects of pornography on our culture and to begin an informed dialogue on the topic with the goal of helping students answer the question: Is the price of pleasure too high?

Due to the mature nature of the film, viewer discretion is advised.

  • Business Uses for the iPad

    iPad

I put myself squarely in the “Working Mac User” category. My MacBook sees daily use in an Enterprise. I freelance write about the Mac and use mine in school. Outside of web surfing and the occasional game, very little of my time at the keyboard is leisure time. So, when I viewed the live blogs of the iPad event, my thoughts drifted to “How can us this for work?” Rather than deal with hypotheticals, I’ll go into some ways I could use an iPad.

    Covering Conventions

I used to cover E3, the gaming industry’s excuse for middle-aged men to ogle booth babes. I’d have to drag my laptop, a camera, notebooks, and whatever crap got handed to me by PR folks. For each appointment my editor sent me to, I was expected to write an article about what I saw. In that situation, when contemplating how much something weighs against its power, weight wins. An iPad that let me write and file a story in from the show floor and weighed under 2 pounds would have be very useful. Add in the optional cellular plan and I’m not fretting too much over an Internet connection — I know, I know, it’s AT&T.

    Flying Steerage Class

When I fly, I give up on getting any work done. I’m a large dude — 6′4, well north of 200 lbs. Even my 13″ MacBook is unwieldy in coach. God help me if I get settled in and the Amazon next to me needs to get up. Then I’m balancing a laptop in the aisle while being jostled. If I’m using an iPad I can just hit the home button and slide it into the seat pocket. Watching movies and reading books on this would be awesome and let me save my iPhone batteries for making calls when I land.

This is also true for the train. I spend three bleeping hour a day on the commuter rail. A laptop is tough to manage on a crowded train at times. I also have trouble getting it at a comfortable height to feel comfortable typing.

    Presentations and Meetings

I’m lucky. I don’t need to give dog and pony shows a lot. As a sales tool, though, this would be very slick. I’d walk into a client’s office, pull out a very sexy looking device and give a great presentation on it. I have a few concerns: Apple has said it’ll connect to most projectors, but I’ve run into enough flaky issues where getting my laptop hooked to the projector involved ritual chants and waving dead chickens at it. Also, during Phil’s Keynote talk, I didn’t see him mention any sort of a presenter’s view.

The iPad would also be very handy for taking notes on during a meeting, especially if you’ve downloaded the agenda previously. Every now and then I get stuck in an all-day snoozefest meeting, and I think the iPad would be more meeting friendly than a laptop. Often, I feel like I might be making the organizer think I’m not paying attention, and a thin iPad on the table might be less intrusive.

    Working Lightly/On The Go

I don’t think I’m unique here: I’ve got a rocking laptop with a 500 gig drive full of documents, music, photos, and movies starring actresses who may, or may not, have been linked to Tiger Woods. Paraphrasing George Carlin, my Macbook Pro is my house; a big pile of stuff with a cover on it. My friend calls me up and wants me to go to Maui for the weekend. Now, it’s never going to happen, but many of us in these situations delude ourselves into thinking we’re actually going to work on a beach in Maui. Or, a family member is in the hospital — or you’re in the hospital. For whatever reason, you need a smaller version of your stuff — just enough to get by for the weekend. For most of us that need to get stuff done, that’s e-mail, Twitter, web surfing, and a lighter version of some productivity tools. The iPad could fill this niche very well for me.

I can think of three times in the last year I’d have been happy to use an iPad instead of my MacBook. My dad was in the hospital for a week and I found my iPhone was a better use for me than the laptop. In October, he and I took a road trip for a week. I hauled the MacBook with me, but in reality I was just going to be playing games, checking e-mail, and doing some light word processing, and the MacBook was overkill. We were at a convention, and I’d have been just as happy sliding the iPad into my carry around bag. The third time was a weekend away with my wife. I brought the lappy but never turned it on. I did everything I wanted on my iPhone, but would have been much happier turning on the iPad to read a book on.

The iWork Suite May Not Be the Killer App

Phil was quite proud of the iWork suite for the iPad, and he should be — it did look amazing. However, I have a lot of concerns about the suite. The biggest one for me is how it handles transfers. For starters, the iWork apps are very closed source. I can’t hand off a Pages document to someone who doesn’t have Pages. On OS X, I can at least make a PDF; I’ve seen no evidence I can do this on the iPad. Also, there’s no Windows version of iWork. If my companion computer isn’t a Mac, how does it handle transfers? Can I even get the documents off it? Will they be in a format I can use on a PC? It’d be handy if seamlessly converted them to .rtf files during the transfer. Steve Jobs reportedly told Walt Mossberg, “Write it in Pages, you could make a Word version and send it to your editors.” We’ll have to wait and see how smooth that is.

For me, rather than iWork, the killer productivity app might be Quickoffice. It already handles .doc and .xls files natively, can access MobileMe and supports Wi-Fi transfers to desktops.

    The Printing Dilemma

One of the productivity-related questions I’ve seen going around is the printing issue. I’ve been giving it a lot of thought, though. How often do I, personally, need to print? Not that often. Maybe a page a week on heavy weeks. But being able to save a page to the iPad, or Evernote and have it sync down is what works best. For me, the lack of printing support isn’t a deal breaker: I can always e-mail it.

    Will I Be Getting One?

Separating the fact that as a card carrying member of the International Brotherhood of Apple Pundits it’s in our Union Charter to get one, the three times I could clearly go, “yes, I could have used/preferred the iPad” (and those aren’t the only times, just the immediate, big ones that came to mind) convince me I should get one.

    I’m not stupid, though.

This is a rev one device. Now, I still have an Edge iPhone, so I’m clearly not in the immediate upgrade class. I’m convinced the iPad 2.0 will have a front-facing camera at the least. Therefore, I’m actually planning on cheaping out and buying the 16GB version with 3G. I think for me, the 3G availability is more important than the extra storage. I can manage my storage very well. I have a 16GB iPhone. There’s 8GB of audio, 3GB of Movies, and 1.3GB of Apps and data. The audio won’t go to the iPad since I’m quite happy with my iPhone as an iPod, so it’s a given the 8GB will get used up by more video. Keeping with the George Carlin theme, will I need my entire 80GB of movies off my MacBook? Heck no. Just the ones I need to get through my weekend in Maui. The Big Lebowski and Star Wars.

How about you business folks? What are you planning on using the iPad for?
