‘Shocking’ execution of Iran protesters condemned

Amnesty International has condemned the execution of two men arrested during protests that followed Iran’s disputed presidential election last year.Mohammad Reza Ali-Zamani and Arash Rahmanipour were hanged on Thursday after being convicted in unfair trials of “enmity against God” and being members of Anjoman-e Padeshahi-e Iran (API), a banned group which advocates the restoration of an Iranian monarchy.
They are the first executions known to be related to the post-election violence that erupted across Iran in June and has continued since.
"These shocking executions show that the Iranian authorities will stop at nothing to stamp out the peaceful protests that persist since the election," said Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui, Amnesty International’s Middle East and North Africa Deputy Director.
"These men were first unfairly convicted and now they have been unjustly killed – it is not even clear they had links to this group as their ‘confessions’ appear to have been made under duress."
According to the Iranian authorities, at least nine other people are currently on death row in Iran after being sentenced to death in similar post-election ‘show trials’.
"Our fear is that these executions are just the beginning of a wave of executions of those tried on similar vaguely worded charges," said Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui.
Mohammad Reza Ali-Zamani and Arash Rahmanipour were convicted of “enmity against God” by Tehran’s Revolutionary Court in October. They were also convicted of "propaganda against the system", "insulting the holy sanctities" and "gathering and colluding with intent to harm national internal security".
Mohammad Reza Ali-Zamani was accused of illegally visiting Iraq where he was alleged to have met US military officials.
Arash Rahmanipour’s lawyer says he played no role in the election protests and was forced to confess in a “show trial” after members of his family were threatened.
The two men’s lawyers were not informed of their clients’ executions, as is required by Iranian law.
"These executions highlight how the justice system is used as an instrument of repression by the authorities. They are sending a warning to those who may wish to exercise their right to peacefully demonstrate against the government, not to go out in the street,” said Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui.
Further anti-government demonstrations are widely expected to take place on the anniversary of the Islamic Revolution on 11 February.
According to Iranian officials, over 40 people have died in demonstrations since the election, which were violently repressed by the security forces. Amnesty International believes the number to be much higher. More than 5,000 people have been arrested, many of whom were tortured or otherwise ill-treated.
Scores have been sentenced to prison terms, and in some cases flogging, after unfair trials, and at least 11 have been sentenced to death. One man – Hamed Rouhinejad – has had his death sentence commuted on appeal in January 2010.

Fed mortgage purchase program to end; MGIC & BofA; Citi, USB updates
As a way to conserve fresh drinking water, a number of conservation groups are now calling for an end to toilets that flush. To which gas station owners say, “We are so ahead of you. We’ve been doing that for years.”
As expected, the FOMC left overnight rates unchanged yesterday. Some of the language contained in the release, however, caused rates to move up slightly, and the stock market to improve. “Economic activity has continued to strengthen and that the deterioration in the labor market is abating. Household spending is expanding at a moderate rate but remains constrained by a weak labor market, modest income growth, lower housing wealth, and tight credit. While bank lending continues to contract, financial market conditions remain
supportive of economic growth.” They believe that inflation is likely to be subdued for some time, and therefore expect to leave Fed Funds near 0% for “an extended period”.More importantly to mortgage folks, once analysts picked apart every word of the announcement, is that the FOMC announced that its $1.25 trillion agency mortgage-backed security purchase program will be slowing down as the end of March nears, and ending March 30th. So it is now official. Personally, I believe that the sun will come up again this morning, my car will start, and life will be close to normal. But anticipation is running high for a steepening of the yield curve as long term rates move higher and the short end remains low. In a related story on mortgage production, an annual report on the ARM market published by Freddie Mac shows adjustable-rate mortgages accounted for just 3 percent of all conventional home purchase loans in 2009. That’s the smallest percentage for ARMs since at least 1982.
MGIC
reported a fourth-quarter loss but said it received fewer default notices and sold new policies that it hopes are better underwritten. On the news all of the publicly traded MI stock prices rallied. In the release, however, MGIC disclosed that Bank of America has ceased doing business with the company as a result of MGIC’s rescission practices. BofA/CW accounted for 12% of all new insurance written in 2008 and 8% of new insurance in the first nine months of 2009 at MGIC, so not having that business going forward, if that happens, will have an impact. This backlash from a major lender hampers income growth at a time when MGIC needs to bring in new income to offset rising claims payments on foreclosed mortgages. My comments yesterday led to some e-mails about other hiring opportunities. As I have said in the past, I don’t want this to turn into a job bulletin board, but it is nice to see that those in the business have some options out there. For example, MegaStar Financial, Colorado’s largest privately held mortgage bank and who lends in 34 states, is looking to hire. Go to http://www.megastarfinancial.com/recruiting. Also, in Northern California, California Mortgage Advisors is actively recruiting for agents and branches – contact Scott Baer at [email protected]. Obviously the trend is for mortgage companies to staff-up on the loan agent side in order to maintain some market share and support their operations staff.

Good Sedan in Faridabad
Hi fellows!
This is me with my first ever query on "What car?". I had been through a lot of similar threads but they actually confused me because none of the queries were similar to mine. So here it goes-
I need to buy a sedan in Faridabad to be used on a daily basis. The running would mostly include drives from Faridabad to Greater Kailash II where my father works. The running in figures would then be nearly 46Km (courtesy Google Maps) daily that makes it 1012Km per month. So, I think I qualify to buy a diesel. But, mind you all, my father strictly wants to stay away from diesels. Plus, I personally feel the prices of diesel and petrol shall be declared same in a few years. So, diesel sedans are ruled out (although I would have loved to wait for the Linea T-Jet). Anyways, I’ll tell you of what all I am looking for in my second car (the first one being the FIRST year 2000 MOONBEAM SILVER Maruti Suzuki Zen in Faridabad which clocked 1,00,000Km lately)-1. SPACE- My dad and me, both are above 6 feet in height and it is quite intriguing to me that my dad finds the Zen’s driver seat OK for him:eek: although I always slide the seat all the way back to accomodate my legs while my dad makes do with the seat in the middle of the slider, hehe. Also, the car would be driven primarily by my dad and me and occasionally by my mom and my sister. Plus, either me or my dad would always be sitting in the rear, so rear seat space (especially legroom must be roomy). I need a sedan for a family of four adults.
2. POWER and FUEL EFFICIENCY- See, the car’s engine must be of the kind which adapts to the driver’s style. What I mean is that I want the car to prance like a mighty horse when I am driving (where I know the fuel efficiency would suffer) but, on the other hand, I want it to be sedate and give a good fuel efficiency when my father drives it (I seriously don’t know if my dad would consider driving "hard", but you never know when that sprout of youth shoots! haha).
3. ACCESSORIES- I also want to know that whether it is advisable to go for the Manufacturer’s leather for which they charge more or the aftermarket ones which look better or "maybe" perform better. So please guide me if it is good to go for something like- "an SX4 vxi with leather or without leather" (just an example)
4. SERVICE- I live in Faridabad and all dealers and workstations are not quite far and are located mainly beside the Mathura Road, but just for the record, there are plenty of Maruti dealers here. Also, the cost of spares must be considered too.
5. Now, as far as our choices go, we like the SX4 and Fiesta 1.6. My dad told me a couple of times that he likes the SX4 in white. My sister says she loves the Fiesta. My mom likes both of them but also tells me she likes the bigger wheels in the SX4. I personally like both the cars but am confused as to which one fits the bill. But there is something else that haunts me. Are their newer models of the above two cars planned this year? I would buy this car to use for another 10 years or so, the car should be long-lasting and low on maintenance.
6. TEST DRIVES- As of now, me and my dad have not taken any test drives as we dont find time. So, test drives are planned in the near future but not quite immediate. So, as of now I shall rely on personal experiences of you guys.
7. EQUIPMENT- The more the better but reasonably justified.
Concludingly,
Are their other petrol sedans in this price range that are better and suit my requirements? Is the Honda City good or is it overrated (and over-priced) as I keep hearing. Anyways, I know it’s a Honda and is very reliable just by the namesake. But such a high price to me is not justified (no offense to anybody).
So, is my choice of the above two cars fine or should I look further?
Please guide me as to which car is better? -

AT&T’s Network Really Does Suck in SF and NYC
AT&T this morning said its earnings rose 25 percent in the fourth quarter thanks to its wireless business, and told consumers, if not investors, what they wanted to hear by detailing plans to spend $18-$19 billion in capital expenditures, with $2 billion aimed at wireless backhaul. The carrier, which has the dubious honor of being the exclusive provider of the iPhone, has been the target of much ire on the part of its customers due to the poor performance of its network, especially in major cities.
Yet in Apple’s own earnings call on Monday an executive at the iPhone maker said AT&T had shown it its plans for improving its network, and that Apple was pleased. It must have been, as yesterday Apple said that AT&T would once again provide a data plan for its latest gadget, a tablet called the iPad. For a detailed look at AT&T’s past network improvements and how the iPad may affect its network, check out out our GigaOM Pro item from yesterday (subscription required).

So far, network performance hasn’t been up to par, and AT&T included charts today in its earnings presentation detailing how far off the mark service is in Manhattan and San Francisco. Additionally AT&T released stats showing that in December 2008 more than one out of every 100 calls was dropped. Now almost one out of every 100 calls is dropped, but such calls are still heavily concentrated in a few major cities (or wherever a bunch of people with iPhones gather).
Fixing the problem will require more capital expenditures, and AT&T said it will spend $2 billion in backhaul to connect its towers and base stations to the Internet (although not all of that will be fiber). It’s also adding more radio network controllers or swapping old ones out in certain areas to better use the spectrum, and is still deploying its HSPA 7.2 upgrades to deliver faster speeds and more capacity.
Such measure, plus the efforts AT&T made last year, will help, but carriers need to start looking at how to manage their networks holistically now that these large data-consuming devices are coming onto them. So while AT&T is bandaging its wounded network, and could succeed, carriers around the world need to think about how to manage data so they avoid such injuries in the first place.

PSA: How to filter out iPad news using Google Reader

In case you missed it, Apple announced the long-awaited iPad yesterday. And while there’s been no shortage of coverage by just about every technology-related blog on the planet, perhaps you’d like to be able to use Google Reader without every third post being about the device. If so, there’s a very simple search trick you can use to filter out all the iPad-related hoopla.
Simply type -ipad in Google Reader’s search bar (or just use this direct link) and you’ll be presented with all the news items that don’t contain the word “iPad” anywhere in the title or body. After the results are presented, you can click either the “Expanded” or “List” link in the upper right-hand corner to view your news as you’re used to seeing it on a daily basis. Needless to say, this trick works for any other term as well.
Enjoy.

iPad Mania: Confessions of an Apple Luddite [Voices]
By Rachel Emma Silverman, Co-Editor, The Juggle, The Wall Street Journal
Tech-aficionados the world over (and some Juggle commenters) are abuzz over Apple’s iPad, a new tablet device that falls somewhere between a laptop and an iPhone.
It’s too early to know all the myriad Juggle-friendly uses the iPad may have (reading novels and magazines or watching videos on the commute, for one). But its sister product, the iPhone, has already proven to be a necessity in many busy families, providing apps that do everything from pacifying antsy children and keeping them entertained on long plane rides to calendar and organizing programs. (Some of the top kid-friendly apps can be found here and here.)
Although I’m thankful that my husband’s iPhone can make all sorts of nifty animal sounds that keep my son amused in a pinch, I confess I haven’t yet succumbed to the lure of an iPhone, preferring the old-fashioned keypad of my trusty BlackBerry.

Scenes From the Apple iPad Day: Is It a Thneed or an iPod XL? [BoomTown]

BoomTown captured some bits and pieces of tasty video, as I attended the Apple rollout of its newest device, the iPad, yesterday.
There are shots of the action in San Francisco outside and inside the launch hall and demo area (with key clips of CEO Steve Jobs during the event), showing off the hardware and software.
And, in a series of interviews, I mocked New York Times tech legend John Markoff, got mocked by Apple (AAPL) PR gurus Katie Cotton and Steve Dowling, got gallant treatment from Gizmodo’s Brian Lam, got shut down by the New York Times tech dude Brad Stone and got CNBC’s Jim Goldman–whom I did not ask on a date–to call the iPad “an XL version of the iPod Touch.”
Or is it a Thneed–the innovative thing that everybody needs–from Dr. Seuss’ “The Lorax”?
Time will tell, but here’s the video to enjoy, plus one of the terrific “Everybody Needs a Thneed” song:

Apple has scheduled internal town hall-style iPad meeting
Filed under: Apple Corporate, Hardware, Multimedia
Just a day after the iPad’s introduction, MacNN reports that Apple has scheduled an internal, town hall-style meeting for employees regarding the iPad. Details of the meeting’s agenda are unknown to us outside of Apple, but it’s a safe guess that attendees will receive a thorough overview of the device, both in function and philosophy, perhaps iPads themselves and a clear sense of what Steve Jobs called “the most important thing I’ve ever done.”Shortly after the iPhone was introduced, a similar internal meeting was scheduled. At that gathering, employees supposedly received iPhones and asked questions of Steve. One attendee famously asked about the simultaneous existence of the iPhone and iPod, to which Steve said that if some company was going to cannibalize their sales, it might as well be Apple.
Certainly meetings like these inform employees but also generate precious word-of-mouth. Apple is obviously deadly serious about the device and we’re looking forward to its appearance on store shelves.
TUAWApple has scheduled internal town hall-style iPad meeting originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 28 Jan 2010 10:30:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

“Barney” Dominatrix Erica Rhodes On “American Idol”
American Idol Season 8 had “Bikini Girl.” This year, talent show fans were treated to the vocal stylings of “Barney Girl,” a former child star with a whip!
Dallas native Erica Rhodes starred on the children’s television classic Barney & Friends in the early ’90s. Now a 23-year-old grad student, it looks like Erica’s been working overtime to get rid of the “Loser Stick” that can come with being an ex-Barney kid later in life. You haven’t heard Barney’s signature song, “I Love You,” until you’ve heard it from a morbid girl clad in black leather.
The Texan successfully shook off her innocent image by cracking the whip and pulling some saucy moves during a rendition of En Vogue’s “Free Your Mind.”
