  • TweetDeck, TwitJobSearch Team Up For Custom Job Search Desktop App

TwitJobSearch, a Twitter-based job search engine, has teamed up with TweetDeck to offer a desktop client dubbed JobDeck, as reported by Clickz earlier this morning.

The application indexes tweets related to recruitment from across the Twittersphere, in real-time, based on TwitJobSearch’s algorithm (our earlier coverage).

Basically, it’s just a custom branded TweetDeck client that comes with two additional default columns: ‘Job Search Experts’ and ‘TwitJobSearch’, although it can also prove helpful to add a LinkedIn column carrying the latest updates from the professional social network (and perhaps even your Facebook news feed).

Recruiters can follow a few simple steps to ensure their tweets are indexed by the TwitJobSearch service, helping them connect with potential candidates through social media more effectively, and for free. The TwitJobSearch site itself offers advertisers the ability to purchase premium, or “Tweetured” job listings, sold on a CPC basis. Current advertisers include brands such as Adidas, KFC, and Lloyds Banking Group, according to Clickz.

The JobDeck app itself will not feature any premium ad opportunities at this point.

  • Microsoft Pink targeting teens and twenty-somethings, devices launching in Spring?

Few reporting on Microsoft are as plugged in to the day-to-day happenings in Redmond as Mary Jo Foley. So much so that she’s apt to write an entire column (or two) about internal Microsoft reorganizations — moves that can be telling from a company attempting to seamlessly integrate its Zune, Xbox, Media Center, and Windows Mobile products, services, and experiences. While you might find it interesting that Enrique Rodriguez has left the company in the latest shakeup to hit MS’ Entertainment and Devices unit, the following sentence presented as fact is what caught our attention:

“Pink is the codename for both the set of premium mobile services and one or more Windows Mobile phones aimed at the teen/twenty-something market.”

Of course, what she’s referring to is the infamous Project Pink, the mystery whatsit said to be emanating from the Microsoft Premium Mobile eXperiences (PMX) group built around the people and technologies nabbed after the Danger acquisition. We’re also intrigued by the discussion of Pink in a separate breath from the consumer build of Windows Mobile 7. This makes us wonder if Microsoft is working on a three-pronged strategy that will result in targetted Windows Mobile 7 business and consumer devices as well as Pink phones specifically aimed at teens and twenty-somethings. Mary Jo Foley speculates that the Pink devices might be the first to run Microsoft’s new premium Pink services but still be WinMo 6.x based — if true then we could see a launch this quarter, no need to wait for Windows Mobile 7 which isn’t expected until the end of the year. How many days until Mobile World Congress again?

    [Thanks, Pratik]

  • Intel GMA HD graphics review deems them excellent for video, mediocre for gaming

Our Intel Arrandale / Clarkdale review bonanza was sprinkled with a few graphics benchmarks, but there was never a concerted effort to break down the specific upgrades on the 45nm GPU that comes as part of the new CPU package. That omission has now been corrected by Bit-tech, who’ve delved deep into the murky waters of embedded graphics and report that Intel’s focus appears to have been firmly on video playback. Noting full bitstreaming, (our HD editors inform us that’s a big deal), Blu-ray with picture-in-picture, and HDMI 1.3a support, the lads commended the “very smooth” 1080p playback of h.264-encoded video. While their conclusion about gaming was less glowing — finding that Intel’s latest gen only keeps up with older hardware — they couldn’t help but recommend the new processors on account of their feature-rich video playback and energy efficiency. More benchmarks at the source link.

  • Opel Official: Closing Antwerp Is A Declaration of War

Just as expected, GM’s decision to close the Antwerp plant outraged Opel’s employees in Belgium, all of them arguing that the US-based car manufacturer could save the factory through a number of measures. Furthermore, some Opel officials went even further and described the decision to shut down the local factory – which led to laying off around 2,600 people – a "declaration of war".

  • Despite problems, laptops boost student test scores

The past several years have seen laptop prices plunge to commodity levels at the same time that the explosion in WiFi access has made getting them on the ‘Net much easier. That’s prompted an explosion of one-to-one student:laptop programs, implemented by everything from individual schools to entire states. Hard data on the effectiveness of these programs, however, has been hard to come by. The most recent issue of The Journal of Technology, Learning and Assessment is devoted to looking at these programs, and it includes some hard data suggesting that they just might help students handle standardized tests.

There are six papers, all dedicated to looking at different attempts at 1:1 laptop programs at different levels of primary education in the US. A few of those are focused on self-reported surveys of how teachers and students view the programs, however; there are only two that focus on hard numbers obtained via statewide standardized tests.

Golfer Jim Thorpe, a three-time winner on the PGA Tour, has been sentenced to a year in prison for failing to pay more than $2 million in income taxes.

He must try to repay the taxes while he’s on supervised release.

Mariah Carey and Miley Cyrus are the latest singers to sign up to perform on Simon Cowell’s track in aid of earthquake-ravaged Haiti. Proceeds from the project will be donated to a relief fund to help survivors and rebuild the island nation after it was rocked by a massive tremor earlier this month. The charity song will be a cover of REM’s “Everybody Hurts,” sources told Sky News Thursday, and the American Idol mogul has been busy lining up celebrities to lend their famous voices to the effort. So far, Simon onvinced performers including Michael Buble, Rod Stewart, Cheryl Cole, Leona Lewis, Take That, James Blunt. and James Morrison to take part.

Mariah was so eager to join the “We Are The World” track for quake survivors, she altered her schedule to record her vocals, Simon says.

“We’re getting there. We have had an incredible amount of support. It’s amazing these great singers are clearing their schedules to make this happen. • Any Risks of using Remote Keyless Entry ?

    Hi All,

Keyless entry for cars has become so much popular and people use it so much very often nowadays that I am wondering whether it has any associated risks. The below possibility just crossed my mind thinking about that:
Is it possible for someone to record the transmitter code sent from other Keyless Entry Remotes using some special device at parking lots (esp when people are unparking their vehicles) and duplicate it whenever they want.

Through this, the least they can do is steal things from the car when you park it next outside.

Or is keyless entry really very safe without any such risk.

  • AOL CTO Cahall Out–As It Buys a Video Platform Company for $36.5 Million and Opens a NY Tech Center (Press Releases, Memos–Natch!) [BoomTown]

While AOL denied last week a report last week suggesting that he was leaving, CTO Ted Cahall is actually, um, leaving.

    Oops!

Sources at AOL said the company thought Cahall (pictured here) was staying when it issued a statement last week saying he was not leaving. Cahall apparently had other plans.

AOL (AOL) CEO Tim Armstrong wrote a note to employees this morning about Cahall’s departure:

Ted Cahall took on the role of CTO after I had asked him to move into that position from a broader business role at the company. Ted is the person who drove the complete replacement of our publishing systems and took AOL deeper into open-source technology, among many other accomplishments. We all owe him a debt of gratitude for the work he has done. Ted has decided to move back into the business side of technology and feels it’s the right time to move on from AOL. Ted has been a strong leader at AOL and agreed to transition the company to a new CTO. We are aggressively searching for a new CTO and we believe AOL is a very attractive opportunity for the right candidate.

Perhaps to defocus from the CTO-Is-Not-Leaving-Oh-Yes-He-Is snafu, AOL is also announcing the acquisition of StudioNow, a video creation and distribution platform, as well as a new tech center in New York, helmed by Jeff Reynar.

Silicon Alley Insider reported last week that AOL had hired the former Google (GOOG) exec as “head of technology.”

Reynar’s new title is actually: Head of Technology for Engineering and Products in New York.

    Got it?

AOL said it would pay $36.5 million in cash and stock for Nashville-based StudioNow, which is its first official acquisition since spinning off from Time Warner (TWX) last year, for integration into its Seed.com content platform.

Here’s the press release on the StudioNow deal, as well as the one on Reynar below it:

AOL ACQUIRES PREMIER ONLINE VIDEO PLATFORM STUDIONOW INC.

Transaction Will Allow AOL to Integrate StudioNow’s Video Creation and Distribution Platform into Seed.com

StudioNow Will Continue to Develop Existing Business

New York, NY, January 25, 2010–AOL Inc. (NYSE: AOL) today announced that it has acquired StudioNow Inc., the premier online platform for quality video creation and distribution. The acquisition will allow AOL to integrate a fully functional video creation platform into its newly-launched content management system, Seed.com. StudioNow will also continue to develop its existing business as a provider of online video creation, management, storage and syndication services to commercial companies.

The acquisition of StudioNow closed on January 22 and was valued at $36.5 million in cash and stock with a portion of the cash paid out over multiple years.

“The successful combination of a talented team, innovative technology, seasoned/professional video creators and strong client service has rapidly established StudioNow as a leader in online video creation and syndication. Those strengths bring AOL significant strategic benefits and we’re delighted that StudioNow is joining the AOL family,” said Tim Armstrong, AOL CEO and Chairman. “Premium original video creation is a fundamental part of AOL’s strategy to offer consumers world-class, stimulating content at scale and the integration of StudioNow into Seed.com will enable us to increase our video content/offerings significantly.”

Founded in January 2007 with headquarters in Nashville, TN, StudioNow partners with blue chip, mid-sized and local companies to create, store, and manage content and syndicate it to online video channels and portals. The company connects clients with its more than 3,000 freelance filmmakers, editors, animators, voice talent and writers/producers to create quality, professional video at an affordable price. In 2009, StudioNow was selected for inclusion on the AlwaysOn Global 250 Top Private Companies List, which honors private, emerging technology companies which create new business opportunities in high-growth markets.

“StudioNow and AOL share a passionate commitment to high-quality content, services and technology and that makes us a natural fit for this new partnership,” said StudioNow’s co-founder and CEO David Mason. “This new chapter for StudioNow presents a tremendous opportunity for our growing professional creative network to reach new audiences, diversify their assignments and increase their income as the number of projects coming from the numerous AOL properties will create a surge in video assignments.”

AOL’s newly launched content management system, Seed.com assigns, buys and distributes work for all of AOL’s properties in order to meet consumer demand for relevant content in areas including entertainment, news and sports, lifestyle, technology, money and finance, among others. Seed.com allows talented professional contributors to be seen, heard and read on AOL’s more than 80 premium branded and niche content sites. Seed.com will harness StudioNow’s technology platform and national network of more than 3000 creative professionals to develop and produce quality, professional video at the request of AOL editors in a way that is rapid, efficient and scalable.

AOL also expects to leverage StudioNow’s technology and resources to complement the ongoing work of its in-house studios, both for AOL productions, which creates original video programming like AOL Sessions, Unscripted, Moviefone Minute and the Engadget Show, and for its branded advertising and content partners.

“The distributed production capabilities offered by StudioNow, combined with our in-house production studio and video resources, help position AOL to capitalize even more fully on the projected growth of video as it establishes itself as a key form of brand advertising in the digital space,” said Armstrong.

eMarketer projects that U.S. online video advertising spending will increase from $734 million in 2008 to $5.2 billion by 2014. This growth will far outpace any other online format, with a compounded annual growth rate of approximately 39% between 2008 and 2014.[1]

    AOL NAMES JEFF REYNAR
TO LEAD NEW TECHNOLOGY CENTER IN NEW YORK

New York, NY, January 25, 2010–AOL Inc. (NYSE: AOL) today announced that Jeff Reynar has joined the company as Head of Technology for Engineering and Products in New York. In this new role, Reynar will build out and manage AOL’s New York Technology Center and will focus on innovation for AOL’s content business and lead AOL’s engineering efforts in New York.

Reynar, 40, is the co-founder of DBT Labs, a company that built a social search service, where he was chief technology officer. Prior to DBT Labs, Reynar spent four-and-a-half years at Google, first as a product manager and then as an engineering manager. He was responsible for co-founding and leading an internal startup team focused on new approaches to search including Google Squared, an experimental search tool that gathers facts from the Web and presents them in an organized collection, and Google Blog Search, among other innovations. Reynar also led the Search UI team in New York that was responsible for much of the search results page on google.com. He previously spent nearly five years at Microsoft where he was a lead program manager on the Authoring Services team that was responsible for Word.

“Jeff is a hands-on technology leader who is experienced in software engineering, people and product management as well as applied research. AOL was founded on a belief that behind great consumer experiences is great engineering, and Jeff is precisely the type of all-star we need to identify, recruit and foster talent as we build out our New York Technology Center,” said AOL CEO and Chairman, Tim Armstrong.

“This is an incredible opportunity to build a team in New York that will work on products that reach tens of millions of consumers,” said Reynar. “AOL’s strategy – content, advertising and communications – presents enormous opportunities. I’m excited by the prospect of finding engineers here and bringing new, young engineering talent to New York City to develop products that will make a tangible difference to consumers. New York is the media capital of the world and bringing more engineering into the content business will make the Internet even more useful than it is today.”

As AOL focuses on building world-class platforms for the Web, the company is expanding its engineering talent with the announcement of the New York Technology Center. The company is also launching a search for a new global Chief Technology Officer. Ted Cahall, the company’s current CTO, has decided to move on from AOL and will be transitioning the company to a new CTO. Currently the company has engineering and product development hubs in Dulles, Virginia; Mountain View and San Francisco, California; Bangalore, India; Dublin, Ireland, and Tel Aviv, Israel as well as a few additional remote locations in other parts of the U.S. and is aggressively expanding engineering at these centers.

“We want to be known as a place where world-class engineering drives world-class results for our company and the consumers and partners we serve,” said Armstrong. “That’s why we are expanding our technology organization and making it easier for us to maximize geographically-centered teams focused on specific products and hire world- class engineering resources in multiple locations across the globe. The result will be a global technology organization focused on innovation and execution on a global scale.”

Reynar is a graduate of the University of Delaware, and received his Ph.D. in Computer and Information Science from the University of Pennsylvania.

Separately today, AOL announced an acquisition focused on accelerating the company’s investment in content technology and platforms. The acquisition of StudioNow Inc., the premier online platform for quality video creation and distribution, will allow AOL to integrate a fully functional video creation platform into its newly-launched content management system, Seed.com.

  • Japan’s Revival Lies In Becoming A Giant Toyota

    toyota akido toyoda

New life could be stirring in the land of the rising sun.

Political rejuvenation and an economy linked heavily to its growing neighbor China means that although Japan will surely give up its Number Two spot to China in the near future, they are far from out of the game.

Essentially, it’s just a matter of bringing Toyota-style productivity to all of the inefficient parts of Japan’s economy.

Times: Japan’s problem is that its healthy factory productivity has not been echoed by its much larger services sector which, including both public and private services, makes up 70 per cent of GDP. Governments have neglected the service-sector deregulation necessary to bring this about. Indeed, by creating the working poor they have made things worse, by offering services firms a pool of ultra-cheap labour.

The big question now, and the biggest new reason to watch Japan, is whether this could change. A country that invigorated its service sector, rescued its working poor and also had the booming China market nearby could do well. For Japan to do so, it needs quite a revolution, which in political terms it has just had: five months ago voters kicked out the party that had run the country for most of the past 60 years, and brought in the Centre-Left, led by Yukio Hatoyama, who promised big changes: a rebuilt welfare state, an end to the stifling power of the bureaucracy, and a more balanced relationship with America and China.

  • Dan Abrams Expands Mediaite Empire With Geek Culture News Site Geekosystem

When I interviewed Dan Abrams last year about his new media news and analysis blog, Mediaite, he indicated that he has ambitions of building a Mediaite mini-empire by expanding to other verticals. Abrams announced late last year that he has a definitive plan for this, with sister Mediaite sites covering style and fashion, sports and technology. Today, Abrams’ venture into tech news and analysis, Geekosystem, has launched.

Geekosystem aims to cover what Abrams calls “geek culture,” which includes tech news, movies, science fiction, video games, superheroes in comics, and more. The audience is all those “nerd” who don’t necessarily work in technology or have a deep understand of the industry, but want to catch up on the latest trends and news.

Original content includes everything from reviews of gadgets to details on the latest sci-fi movie. And the site will also add a dash of traditional tech news coverage, so expect to see mentions of Twitter and Facebook. But by and large, the site will have a mix of coverage and won’t be primarily focused on covering the startups and tech giants that we report on here at TechCrunch and other tech news blogs, says the site’s editor Robert Quigley. Content will be supplied by the site’s two editors, an intern, and a range of contributors. Additionally, the site will aggregate top tech and geek stories from around the web.

Geekosystem will off course feature a technologized version of Mediaite’s trademark Power Grid, which ranks and indexes media players based on news, analysis and events on a weekly basis. Geekosystem’s grid includes the obvious; Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, Sergey Brin and Larry Page. And Michael Arrington also makes an appearance.

The site’s design is basic, which isn’t surprising considering that Mediaite’s UI is fairly simple. Will Geekosystem succeed? Abrams has had considerable success with Mediaite the past year, with the site making Technorati’s top 40 blogs list. And the startup expects to turn profitable this year. But the “geek news” space is considerably more crowded than the media news arena, and Abrams might find himself fighting with both tech and gadget blogs for traffic. But that being said, I like Abrams’ “pop culture meets geek culture” ambitions for the site and it could gain a following based on the quality of its coverage. The site is already getting a vote of confidence from one of the biggest players in the tech space, Microsoft. The tech giant is going to be the exclusive advertiser (for Bing) on Geekosystem for a full two weeks.

  • AOL Acquires StudioNow For $36.5M, Confirms Departure Of CTO Ted Cahall

Lots of announcements from AOL this morning: the company has acquired Internet video company StudioNow in a deal valued at $36.5 million in cash and stock, with a portion of the cash paid out over multiple years. In addition, AOL decided to confirm the news we broke last week about CTO Ted Cahall leaving the company, after vehemently denying it up until now.

Finally, AOL has hired Microsoft and Google vet Jeff Reynar as Head of Technology for Engineering and Products in New York. Reynar will build out and manage AOL’s New York Technology Center and will focus on innovation for AOL’s content business and lead AOL’s engineering efforts in New York.

The acquisition of StudioNow provides AOL with a video creation platform that it intends to integrate into its recently launched content management system Seed.com. This system essentially assigns, buys and distributes work for all of AOL’s properties, which includes more than 80 branded and niche content sites.

AOL says it will harness StudioNow’s technology platform and network of more than 3000 creatives to develop and produce professional video at the request of AOL editors. AOL also expects to make use of the company’s technology and resources for its in-house studios, both for AOL productions and for its branded advertising and content partners.

Tim Armstrong, AOL CEO and Chairman, said: “Premium original video creation is a fundamental part of AOL’s strategy to offer consumers world-class, stimulating content at scale and the integration of StudioNow into Seed.com will enable us to increase our video content/offerings significantly.”

Founded in January 2007 with headquarters in Nashville, TN, StudioNow had raised $3.5 million over two rounds.

Following the decision of Ted Cahall to wave AOL goodbye (the latest in a long series of executives jumping ship), the company is launching a search for a new global Chief Technology Officer. A key hire for its New York Technology Center is Jeff Reynar, co-founder and now former CTO of social search company DBT Labs.

Prior to DBT Labs, Reynar spent four-and-a-half years at Google, first as a product manager and then as an engineering manager. He was responsible for co-founding and leading an internal startup team focused on new approaches to search including Google Squared and Google Blog Search.
