  • 1964 Shelby Cobra Flip-Top fails to meet reserve at RM auction

    1964 Shelby Cobra 427 Flip-Top – Click above for a high-res image gallery

With the exception of the 1995 Ford GT90 Concept, which was unfortunately pulled from the sale, the highlight of RM’s Arizona auction this year was undoubtedly the 1964 Shelby Cobra 427 “Flip-Top.” The car served as the prototype for the legendary 427 Cobra, and is the only Cobra to feature a clamshell design. It’s also quite a beast of a car, with the 427-cubic-inch V8 pushing out 623 horsepower. Without a doubt, it commanded the entire room’s attention when it drove onto the block.

Although RM didn’t list an estimated price, we fully expected the car to reach into the seven figures. The Flip-Top Cobra doesn’t exactly have a legendary racing history, but any one-off 427 Cobra is worth gobs of cash in our book. Bidding quickly passed the million-dollar mark but ultimately stalled out at $1,450,000. It wasn’t quite enough to meet the reserve price, so it looks like the Flip-Top will be staying with its current owner for now. You can read more about the car and its history in the description from RM Auctions after the jump.

  • Court case shocker: Judge rules in favor of Rambus, not Nvidia… sort of

Rambus, a company that has been in a long, drawn out legal battle with Nvidia over five patents for what seems like ages now, had some good news delivered to it late last week. A judge at the U.S. International Trade Commission issued a preliminary determination finding that Nvidia had indeed violated three of the five patents — ruling that the other two had not been violated. Now, Nvidia says that the whole patent mystery continues to be a subject ripe for rexamination by the Patent and Trademark Office — which has consistently found the claims of infringement to be invalid. Nvidia says it will take the claims to a full commission for a final decision. You’ll probably remember that these five patent infringement claims were part of a much larger suit that Rambus filed against Nvidia — some of which were dropped earlier this month. Will it never end?

It was just a couple of weeks ago that we warned you that there were a bunch of phony Apple emails being sent to MobileMe subscribers designed to trick them into giving up their credit card info.

Now, Apple has published a couple of Knowledge Base articles designed to help you if you get some mail that might not really be from Apple.

The first posting helps you to renew your account, update your credit card information, and to deal with messages MobileMe may send you about your storage limits.

It also has an additional older specific link to help you identify fraudulent emails that look like they are from Apple but aren’t. For whatever reason, crooks love to prey on MobileMe users, and there have been issues with fake renewals and credit card phishing schemes for a couple of years now.

If you have any doubts, check the Apple articles, and report any problems to Apple. A credit card is a terrible thing to waste, or lose.

  • ‘Tremendous Interest’ in a Mass Effect Movie, says BioWare

    Mass Effect 2

Could a Mass Effect film adaptation be in BioWare’s stars? Evidently yes: Although they’re currently not pursuing any offer, project director Casey Hudson says their intergalactic RPG series is attracting a lot of Hollywood attention.

“Obviously we have a tremendous amount of interest from people in Hollywood to make a major motion picture about Mass Effect,” he recently told MTV (via VG247). “The most important thing for us is, we don’t just want to see a movie get made. We want to see a great movie get made, if it’s going to get done at all.”

So for now that means no film adaptation is in the works, but that may change going forward. “We’re just looking at our options there, but waiting to make sure we have something really right before we do it,” Hudson explained.

  • First production 2011 Cadillac CTS Coupe goes to highest bidder at Barrett-Jackson

First Production 2011 Cadillac CTS Coupe – Click above for high-res image gallery

For the last few years Barrett-Jackson has become the place to sell “production firsts” like the Dodge Challenger, Corvette ZR1, and Shelby GT500 KR to name a few. For 2010, it seems we’ve run out of new muscle cars to auction off, but Cadillac decided to take advantage of a captive and wealthy audience to unload the very first production 2011 Cadillac CTS Coupe. We’d probably be more interested if it was a CTS-V Coupe, as we don’t see a run-of-the-mill two-door CTS becoming a collectible, regardless of when it was produced.

Still, we can’t fault Cadillac too much for bringing the first CTS Coupe to Barrett-Jackson, since all of the winning bid minus the cost of the car will be donated to the College for Creative Studies. The top bidder doesn’t get this exact car, but instead gets to special-order his or her own CTS Coupe with the choice of color, engine, transmission, trim, and any options. So what’s it worth? The car sold yesterday for a respectable price of $95,700 including buyers commission.

  • You Could Not Make It Up: Facts and fictions about climate change from The Royal Society

Article Tags: You could not make it up

It has become fashionable in some parts of the UK media to portray the scientific evidence that has been collected about climate change and the impact of greenhouse gas emissions from human activities as an exaggeration.

Some articles have claimed that scientists are ignoring uncertainties in our understanding of the climate and the factors that affect it. Some have questioned the motives of the scientists who have presented the most authoritative assessments of the science of climate change, claiming that they have a vested interest in playing up the potential effects that climate change is likely to have.

This document examines twelve misleading arguments (presented in bold typeface) put forward by the opponents of urgent action on climate change and highlights the scientific evidence that exposes their flaws. It has been prepared by a group led by Sir David Wallace FRS, Treasurer of the Royal Society, and Sir John Houghton FRS, former chair of Working Group I of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). This document has been endorsed by the Council of the Royal Society, and draws primarily on scientific papers published in leading peer-reviewed journals and the work of authoritative scientific organisations, such as the IPCC and the United States National Academy of Sciences.

  • Is Rooney a potential 2010 Ballon d’or?

A few stats to begin with. In the major leagues so far this year only 3 players: Rooney (22) Fabregas (22) and Messi (20) have twenty plus league goals plus assists. Ronaldo, admittedly with fewer games has only 8.

It is widely thought that the 2010 Ballon d’or is a two horse race with Messi and Ronaldo in an OK corral type shootout in la Liga/CL/World Cup for the award.

I don’t see it like that. Rooney is playing superbly for United and is every bit as influential as Ronaldo was in his greeat year 2 years ago and he is currently leading in the Golden Boot. He is the fulcrum for both United and England. If either are successful this year he will almost inevitably be the catalyst. The same could be said for Fabregas in truth though I think he is surrounded at international level by more talent than Rooney and hence may suffer from that as Iniesta did last year when shining for barca but being overlooked in favour of not only Messi but curiously Ronaldo as well in voting.

If Rooney stays fit and if England go well I think he is a good chance given that he has matured to be as roundedand important a player as any in the world. Any views?

    From ’round the sphere…

    Obama is good for business

Yes, you read that headline correctly. Of course, what KIND of business is another matter. In Obama’s case, he’s good for the lobbying business. 2009 reports from K Street (DC’s lobbying district) show big gains, some on the order of 40% over 2008.

Bottom line? When you work to have government take greater control of various aspects of business and our daily lives you increase the odds that citizens (whether on an individual or corporate basis) will fight back. And (at least until November) that involves lobbying.

    GOP Recruiting picks up speed

What a difference one election makes. In the wake of this week’s election in Massachusetts, the NRCC says their candidate recruitment has picked up considerably. And, as you can imagine, they’re now having an easier time getting good potential challengers to take a serious look at challening some previously "un-challengable" Democrats, (you know, the Massachusetts variety).

    Obama to campaign for Reed

You really have to love this. After going 0 for 3 in the past few months, (Virginia, New Jersey and Massachusetts), Obama is going to hit the campaign trail for Harry Reid (who is wayyyyyy down in the polls in Nevada right now). read more »

  • Governor races down to the wire

The Democratic governor primary is a toss-up between Gov. Pat Quinn and Comptroller Dan Hynes as controversy over an inmate early release program and an imploding state budget cut into the governor’s once-sizable advantage, a Tribune/WGN-TV poll has found.

On the Republican side, three candidates are in a tight battle ahead of the Feb. 2 primary. Former state GOP Chairman Andy McKenna, former Illinois Attorney General Jim Ryan and state Sen.

Kirk Dillard lead the field, but none reached 20 percent, according to the new poll.

The results show that with an early primary election coming little more than a month after the new year, candidates who placed a premium on extensive and expensive TV advertising are seeing dividends as prospective voters began tuning in to the upcoming election.

Each of the surveys, conducted Jan. 16-20, also indicate that results for this primary could depend on last-minute voter appeals through TV, radio and campaign get-out-the-vote efforts.

Among Democrats, Quinn’s better than 2-to-1 lead over Hynes in a Tribune survey six weeks ago has evaporated amid concerns about the unelected incumbent’s ability to handle the job.

The poll of 601 likely Democratic voters showed Quinn with 44 percent and Hynes with 40 percent — within the survey’s 4 percentage point error margin. Thirteen percent of the voters were undecided.

Hynes’ surge was dramatic, given the command Quinn held in early December. At that point, Quinn’s job approval rating was 58 percent, 46 percent supported his efforts to repair the state budget and he held a 49-23 advantage over Hynes, the three-term state comptroller.

Since then, Hynes has hammered Quinn with TV ads criticizing the governor for releasing inmates only days after their arrival at state prisons to save money.

Dozens of those released early are back in prison for alleged crimes. Quinn ultimately called the program a “mistake” and blamed it on his prisons director, Michael P. Randle, who he kept on the job.

Two-thirds of Democratic voters polled said the early release of inmates to save money was wrong, including 71 percent of Hynes supporters and 59 percent of those backing Quinn.

Quinn also has been stung by the woeful state budget, with overdue bills to state service providers growing to more than $5 billion. On TV, both Hynes and some Republicans have ripped Quinn for proposing a major income tax increase that would affect the middle class.

Quinn has supported various tax hike plans, some that had tax breaks for those with lower incomes and some that did not. Hynes backs a plan requiring voters to approve a state constitutional amendment to impose a higher tax rate on those who make the most.

Democratic voters are split at 44 percent on whether a tax increase is necessary to help cover the state’s budget deficit. Among Quinn supporters, 57 percent said they believed a tax hike is needed while 34 percent said it’s unnecessary.

Those numbers are virtually reversed among Hynes supporters, with a majority believing a tax increase isn’t necessary.

All told, Quinn’s job approval rating has slumped to 43 percent — below the 50 percent mark that incumbents seek at election time. At the same time, the number of Democratic voters who disapprove of how Quinn has handled the job has climbed from 18 percent to 31 percent.

Despite Hynes’ heavy dose of attack advertising, he still maintained a favorability rating of 41 percent of Democratic voters, while only 13 percent viewed him unfavorably.

Even after getting into a highly publicized battle with Quinn and refusing to sign off on more state borrowing, half the voters approve of the comptroller’s job performance, as they did last month.

In recent days, Quinn has made efforts to gain support among African-American voters, criticizing Hynes over failing to discover the Burr Oak cemetery scandal and even for criticizing Barack Obama when Hynes was running against him in the 2004 U.S. Senate primary.

Hynes struck back last week with an ad featuring the late Mayor Harold Washington saying he made a mistake in hiring Quinn as city budget director.

Mirroring the overall results, 44 percent of black voters in the survey favored Quinn and 40 percent backed Hynes. But only 36 percent of African-American voters said they approved of the job Quinn was doing as governor.

In addition to Hynes’ attack ads, Quinn also has been targeted by McKenna, the most prolific advertiser on the Republican side. McKenna’s ad blitz helped him achieve support from 19 percent of Republican voters compared to 18 percent for Elmhurst’s Ryan and 14 percent for Dillard, of Hinsdale.

Another 9 percent backed state Sen. Bill Brady of Bloomington, while Hinsdale transparency advocate Adam Andrzejewski had 7 percent and Chicago political pundit Dan Proft had 6 percent. Another 17 percent were undecided in the survey of 592 likely Republican primary voters.

DuPage County Board Chairman Bob Schillerstrom of Naperville, who had 2 percent support in the survey, dropped out of the race Friday and announced he’s backing Ryan.

McKenna and Ryan are strongest in Chicago and the suburbs, where each has support from more than one in five voters surveyed. Dillard has the backing of 22 percent of downstate voters, but lags in his home base.

Weeks ago, Ryan, the unsuccessful 2002 Republican nominee against disgraced former Gov. Rod Blagojevich, was the frontrunner in the contest with 26 percent support, largely from being the most well-known.

Ryan has denied he was coasting on his lead, but he hasn’t been the most visible campaigner. Still, his familiarity among voters has kept his candidacy viable against more moneyed opponents.

McKenna, meanwhile, has increased his name recognition among GOP voters to 84 percent from 67 percent in the previous survey.

Dillard, whose money woes led him to seek campaign cash from controversial conservative activist Jack Roeser, made the most headway in name recognition. He moved from being known by little more than half of GOP voters to 81 percent of them.

Dillard, who saw his support increase slightly from 9 percent in the last survey, also is being backed by the Illinois Education Association, a powerful teachers union that has sought a tax increase to bolster funding for schools and pensions.

More than 85 percent of Republican voters still believe that opposition to a tax increase is important in their selection of a candidate. All of the contenders have said they do not support higher taxes to repair the state’s budget, but McKenna has used his ads to target Ryan and Dillard as refusing to rule out a tax increase.

  • Apple patent filings outline input device gestures, solar iPods and iPhones

Apple’s reputation as an innovator doesn’t seem to be waning at all. Two recent patent applications published Thursday on the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s Web site show that Apple is dreaming of new gestures using input devices and solar-powered iPods and iPhones. These applications are just a few of a recent parade of patents we’ve been following.

While these are just filings for patent protection and not actual products, Thursday’s “Methods and Apparatus for Processing Combinations of Kinematical Inputs” filing is very intriguing in light of the upcoming announcements. As described in the filing, “Some embodiments of the present invention therefore enable a user to provide a series of gestures as input to the receiving device. Such gestures may include, for example, brushing motions, scooping motions, nudges, tilt and slides, and tilt and taps. The application can then respond to each gesture (or gesture combination) in any number of ways.”

Hmmm… using a mouse on a “receiving device?” That could be an interesting way to perform tasks on a tablet device. We’ve heard some rumors about the tablet that describe new gestures that may take a bit of getting used to, and perhaps some of those are made to use a mouse in the manner described in the filing.

It’s also apparent that Apple is quite interested in making devices with virtually unlimited battery life. Another filing unveiled on Thursday, titled “Power Management Circuitry and Solar Cells,” describes power management circuitry allowing portable devices like the iPod and iPhone to operate on solar power.

The application details how both solar and battery power sources can be used to power the devices, using switches to reconfigure solar cells on the fly so that the device receives a constant voltage even when some cells are “shadowed” by a hand.

How about it, TUAW readers? Are you ready for a solar-powered tablet you can tap, brush, and nudge with a solar mouse? It could happen some day, although these are patentable ideas and not actual products.

  • Tetsuya Nomura: No FFVII Remake ‘for the Time Being’

It may go down as the cruelest tech demo in the history of videogames: a remake of the very first scene of Final Fantasy VII that was intended only to show off the PlayStation 3’s power, but instead went on to fan desires for a full-blown remake for the last four years. Desires that just keep getting shot down.

The latest crushing rebuff comes from none other than FFVII character designer (and now game director) Tetsuya Nomura, who said in this week’s Famitsu that no one should expect a remake anytime soon. “Fans are looking forward to an oft rumored remake of FFVII, but I don’t believe this will happen for the time being,” Nomura said (via Andriasang).

But wait! It’s not all bad news! Just because there won’t be a remake (for the time being…), that doesn’t mean we won’t see a return of what will probably always be Nomura’s most popular character: FFVII main character Cloud Strife. “It’s possible that he will appear in other titles as a guest character,” Nomura teased.

  • Next L4D2 Update Adding Versus Bots, Tweaking Auto-Spawning

    Left 4 Dead 2

Valve has announced that Left 4 Dead 2’s next update won’t be out for another few weeks, but at least they let us know what to expect: Infected bots and auto-spawning tweaks in the game’s popular Versus mode.

Detailing the two major aspects of the update in a post on their official blog, the L4D2 team explained how both the bots and auto-spawning tweaks are intended to smooth out issues with the Versus mode. The bots will “help out the Infected when they are down a man or two,” the post explains, and “will also make 1v1 Versus a bit more fun.”

As for tweaking the auto-spawning in the finale events of Versus mode, Valve says one thing they’ve been experimenting with is disabling them altogether — and crunched some numbers to show why. “Across all finales in Left 4 Dead 2 currently, a single survivor has a 34.56% chance of escaping,” the post reads. “That includes the Concert Finale in ‘Dark Carnival,’ which boasts close to a 50% escape rate (and yes, a fix for everyone’s favorite cheese spot is coming). Remove the Concert Finale, and we see the average drop to 29.61%.”
