  • $100,000 prototype laptop stolen from Apple’s campus in 2009?

    Filed under:

Zirana, a startup company with the goal to make Zirana.com “a one stop shop for all local information” for “residents of small and medium sized towns all across the world,” including Cupertino, is reporting that a prototype laptop was stolen from Apple’s campus sometime in 2009:

Trade Secret Theft/Possession of Stolen Property – Infinite Loop
Between 1/1 and 12/18, unknown suspect(s) took a prototype laptop worth about $100,000 from Apple Computers on Infinite Loop using an unknown method. The suspect(s) sold it to another suspect. Deputies recovered the laptop from the second suspect and he was released pending further investigation.

Given that the laptop was a prototype, it’s no surprise that it could be worth $100,000. And if Apple is having internal theft problems, it’s no wonder they acted so swiftly and decisively to stop Gawker’s (coincidentally) $100,000 bounty on Apple’s tablet.

As Zirana states, the prototype laptop has since been recovered. It should be noted, however, that Zirana’s information on the theft is user generated and does not originate from an official police report or an Apple spokesperson. Then again, maybe that 3GS commercial took its inspiration from real life events?

  • Barrett-Jackson 2010: First production 1966 Shelby GT350

First Production 1966 Shelby GT350 – Click above for high-res image gallery

There are quite a few Shelby Mustangs here at Barrett-Jackson, but if we could only buy one it would be this ‘66 GT350. What’s so special about it? For starters, it’s the very first one built. It’s also got everything we would want in a classic Shelby – Wimbledon White paint with Blue Le Mans stripes, 4-speed transmission, 15-inch Cragar wheels, Goodyear blue dot tires and a fully-restored 289ci V8. The car also comes with its original owner’s manual, SAAC club documentation and is listed in the Shelby American World Registry.

What’s it worth? The market has spoken and it’s said $247,500. That’s quite a bit of cash, but like we said, if there’s any Shelby here that we would buy, this would be it. Hit the jump for a full description of the car courtesy of Barrett-Jackson.

  • 2011 Ford Mustang Daytona 500 Pace Car brings big money at Barrett-Jackson

2011 Ford Mustang Daytona 500 Pace Car – Click above for high-res image gallery

The 2011 Mustang was just introduced a few weeks ago in Detroit, and already one lucky buyer will be able to get his hands on the very first modern 5.0 Mustang available for sale. That particular Mustang also happens to be the pace car for the upcoming Daytona 500 next month, making it all the more special. It’s the first time a Ford has set the pace for the Great American Racing in forty years. Yes, Ford announced that they will be 50 replicas of the car, but this is the real deal.

There are quite a few other benefits that come with this particular car. Both Mark Fields and Carl Edwards were on stage with the car, and between the two of them they threw in a trip to the Daytona 500, VIP access to the Ford hospitality center, a tour of the pits, and a lap of the track in the passenger seat with Edwards. Not bad at all. Did we mention that proceeds from the sale will benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation? With all those incentives, the final price of $330,000 made it the most expensive car of the auction so far.

Ring Brothers Mustangs at Barrett-Jackson – Click above for high-res image gallery
We’ve been fans of the Ring Brothers since we first laid eyes on their Reactor Mustang at the SEMA Show back in 2006. The quality of the materials used and the bespoke designs made it perhaps the most beautiful classic Mustang we’ve ever seen. Since then they have followed up with the RAZOR Camaro and Ford Fairlane Afterburner, both equally impressive cars.

While it probably takes the Ring Borthers hundreds if not thousands of hours to build each car, but bidders at Barrett-Jackson had the chance to immediately get their hands on not one but two Ring Brothers creations. The Reactor Mustang as well as another ‘67 Fastback nicknamed “Copperback” were both up for sale at no reserve. The Reactor Mustang topped out at $253,000 and the Copperback went home to a new buyer for $159,000, both bought well in our opinion. For more details on each Mustang just follow the jump.

  • Week in review: Apple tablet rumors gather, Seesmic launches Look

Here’s our rundown of the week’s business and tech news. First, the most popular stories VentureBeat published in the last seven days:

ipadApple tablet roundup: Who’s going to use the thing? — Apple’s tablet has provided no shortage of rumors. Everything from design specs to pricing have flooded the internet from various media outlets and sources. To gain a better perspective on the scope of rumors, we put together a snapshot below of the most recent speculations.

Three ways the Apple tablet will save the Earth — Yes, the headline is a bit facetious. But even if Apple’s tablet doesn’t save the planet, its users will be cutting carbon in three major industries.

Want new apps for your Android or iPhone? Here are the best directories — The best way to find new apps is to use one of the 20 or so directories out there that try to make sense of the thousands of apps. Writer Jacob Lyssy tried out a number of directories over the course of the week and recommends his favorites.

Will The New York Times meter kill traffic from social media? — Following the newspaper’s announcement that it will start charging visitors a flat fee for full access to its site, we looked at data from Hitwise to see how the move might affect traffic.

As Oracle-Sun deal gains approval, Oracle exec’s affair splashed on billboards — Just as the European Union finally gave its blessing to Oracle’s acquisition of Sun Microsystem’s, Oracle’s co-president found details of his 8.5-year extramarital affair splashed on billboards around the United States.

And here are five more stories we thought were important, thought-provoking, or fun:

seesmic lookSeesmic goes after mainstream consumers, tablets with Look — The typical Twitter client, which is used to read tweets, might resemble rocket science to grandma. With that in mind, Seesmic, which is behind several mobile, desktop and web-based social media clients for keeping track of tweets and Facebook updates, is going after regular consumers with a new product called Seesmic Look.

Google: Our focused approach paid off, ‘We like the Chinese people’ — While crowing about Google’s strong fourth quarter earnings, the search giant’s executives looked back on 2009 as a whole. Google seemed to elbow its way into many new markets over the course of the year, but Vice President of Product Management Jonathan Rosenberg said it also benefited by deciding to “double down” on its core products like search.

AdMob: Apple may break its tie with Nokia for world domination — Apple, with its iPhone OS, is the dominant force in North America, Western Europe, Latin America and Oceania, while Nokia, running the Symbian OS, still leads in Africa, Asia and Eastern Europe, according to December 2009 survey data published by mobile advertising network AdMob. But data shows that Apple may finally be making inroads on a global level.

It gave developers access to the new design so that they can start creating apps that are well-integrated with the dashboards.

  • New to forum, 30 year old type-II

I was diagnosed back in December with an A1C of 13.6 and a glucose level of 350. I’ve been on 1500mg of Metformin a day and eating less carbs (and a lot of nuts), and my reading 20 minutes ago was 125. My A1C last week was 11. Going back to the doctor’s on Tuesday for classes in taking insulin injections.

In my last year of college, I was 168lbs at a height of 6’1". I tried starting a business several times, but failed, had no health insurance, ended up selling my home (at the peak of the real estate bubble!), used that to pay off my debts, and I kind of went into an over-eating depressive mode for a few years. From 2005 to 2007, I gained over a hundred pounds and peaked at 283lbs. I felt like a fat pig, but I kind of gave up on life and just didn’t care. (I am currently 243 lbs.)

I then got a full-time job, and went to graduate school at the same time. I was so focused on the job and graduate school that I stopped exercising altogether. I was eating out all the time, treating my body like absolute ****. But by the end of all of this, my body just gave out on me. I was experiencing all kinds of allergies, hallucinations, and every day was just a struggle. I stopped working, kept passing out from all the various medications I was on. I knew what was going on was because I wasn’t taking care of myself, but I just kind of lost the ability to manage things.

I knew I had problems in 2006, so I went to therapists and doctors. The doctors treated me really poorly, and they said my over-eating was a psychological problem. They did the diabetes tests, didn’t give me any real warnings or anything. I was eating and eating, never feeling satisified. I never got any energy from what I ate, and eventually just started slipping further into the abyss.

One day, I woke up and half my body was numb. I went to the doctor, found out my triglyceride level was 4000 and my glucose levels were off the charts. I finally found out I was a diabetic.

I’ve been working on slowly rebuilding life, but today I found out all of my grandparents died of diabetes. None of them had any weight problems — their diets did them in. They had amputations, lost their sight and all died really horrible deaths. I never knew why they died, I just assumed it was old age.

I haven’t been exercising. I’ve avoided sugar and carbs, but occasionally I will have a little. I’m kind of aimless at the moment, just trying to take it all in.

  • Mom fired after taking day off for child

Dena Lockwood, 39, has been a working mother since she was 18 but never felt she was treated differently in the workplace because of her family responsibilities.

Then she took a sales position in 2004 at Professional Neurological Services Ltd.

Her commission rate was lower than that of sales people who were not parents. She was ignored in sales meetings.

The company was more lax about time off taken by single people.

One day in 2006 when she had to take a day off because her 4-year-old daughter was sick, her manager responded by firing her.

Working mothers face discrimination on the job, but Lockwood’s story has gained attention because of her rare accomplishment: Instead of going to court, she filed a discrimination claim against her former employer at the Chicago Commission on Human Relations and won.

The low-profile administrative agency enforces the city’s regulations that prohibit discrimination in housing and employment. Chicago’s ordinance also is one of the few local statutes nationwide that expressly prohibits job discrimination against parents.

Yet, the commission is seen as a place of last resort because cases are not tried in front of a jury and lawyers assume awards might be smaller than outcomes in state and federal courts.

The decision in Lockwood’s case could start changing perceptions about local discrimination laws and be a wake-up call for employers. In July the commission awarded her more than $213,000, including $100,000 in punitive damages. A few months later, a hearing officer also recommended that Lockwood’s attorneys receive $87,000 in fees.

After getting word of the commission’s decision, Lockwood said, “I was ecstatic about winning. It was like a weight was lifted off my back.”

The size of Lockwood’s recovery was large enough that her case was cited in a recent study about an evolving area of employment law known as family responsibilities discrimination.

“While the scope of local laws may seem limited, their impact can be significant and costly for employers,” said Stephanie Bornstein, associate director of the Center for WorkLife Law at the University of California Hastings College of Law, which released the study last month.

Most workers today must balance job and caregiving responsibilities. More than 70 percent of children grow up in a family with either a working single parent or with two parents who both work, according to statistics cited by Heather Boushey, senior economist at the Center for American Progress Action Fund.

Many employers have responded with family-friendly policies, such as flexible work arrangements. Federal law also requires larger employers to offer unpaid time off under the Family and Medical Leave Act.

But no statute specifically prohibits discrimination against those with family responsibilities, which can include caring for spouse and aging parents. That has not stopped creative lawyers from filing lawsuits under existing workplace anti-bias laws, and they are doing so with increasing frequency.

From 1996 to 2005, there were 481 cases alleging family responsibilities discrimination filed in U.S. courts, up from 97 brought during the previous decade, according to a 2006 report by the WorkLife Law Center.

The legal landscape and demographic trends pushed the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in 2007 to issue enforcement guidance to explain how existing laws prohibiting job discrimination based on gender, pregnancy or disability can protect caregivers as well.

It offered examples: denying an out-of-town management position to a female worker with teenage children based on a stereotype that women should not live away from home during the week, or removing a female cop who had just adopted a baby from high-profile cases on the assumption that her caregiving role will make her unreliable.

With gaps in federal and state laws leaving caregivers vulnerable, local governments, including several major urban areas with large labor forces, have passed their own protections. Chicago’s discrimination law has been on the books since 1990.

Still, employment bias cases at the city’s commission involving parental status claims are infrequent compared with race and gender claims. In 2006, for example, the city received 93 employment complaints. Only three alleged parental status discrimination.

There could be several reasons for the small caseload, legal experts say, including limited public awareness of the statute. But local lawyers say the lack of a jury is a deterrent to filing cases at the commission.

That did not stop Lockwood and her attorney, Ruth Major.

Lockwood’s ordeal began in 2004, when the west suburban single mother began working for Chicago-based Professional Neurological Services, which sells medical tests to doctors. Her children were 2 and 16 at the time.

Her story is compiled through commission documents and interviews with Lockwood and her attorney. A lawyer for the company said it intended to appeal the decision and declined further comment, and an owner of the company did not return phone calls.

  • Daley will consider suspension recommendation against aides for their handling of sexual harassment complaint

Mayor Richard Daley pledged today to consider a recommendation by the city’s inspector general to suspend two key aides for their handling of a student intern’s sexual harassment complaint.

The Tribune reported Friday that Inspector General Joseph Ferguson has issued a report to Daley recommending he suspend Anthony Boswell, executive director of the mayor’s Office of Compliance, and Mark Meaney, the first deputy.

Ferguson found Boswell and Meaney violated city policies and showed favoritism to an official at the 911 center after an intern there complained about being harassed in 2008.

Daley, who spent much of the week at a mayor’s conference in Washington D.C., said he hadn’t seen Ferguson’s findings.

“We’re going to sit down. I haven’t discussed it with him yet,” Daley said at a Saturday event to announce the donation of three Chicago Fire Department ambulances to Haiti.

“But like anything else, I’ll listen very closely to his recommendations and evaluate it. I have not seen him as yet.”

Daley also reiterated his pledge not to endorse anybody in the Feb. 2 primary election.

The mayor acknowledged some candidates might be touting his support on their campaign literature, but said he won’t seek to prevent them from doing so.

“I think some of them maybe are using my name. It doesn’t bother me,” the mayor said.

On the inside, the 2011 BMW 335is Coupe and Convertible get an M Sport steering wheel, sport seats, anthracite headliner, M door sills, M driver’s footrest, M gearshift knob, and stainless steel sport pedals. The instrument cluster features dials in dark grey with a “335is” badge on the tachometer face. The passenger side dashboard also features an “335is” badge on the standard aluminum glacier silver dark trim.
