    Juan Carlos's RS6

Spanish King Don Juan Carlos’ Audi RS6 – Click above for high-res image gallery

Wouldn’t it be nice to select cars from an automaker’s fleet the way you select lobsters from a tank? Some, like King Juan Carlos of Spain, can do exactly that, and this is his latest lobster: a blackout-remixed Audi RS6 sedan. About the only things not given the midnight treatment are the headlights, taillights, and signal indicators on the mirrors. Even the exhaust tips are black.

A book last year alleged that the king owned 71 cars and had a team of 65 attendants to care for them. If true, this one makes a worthy 72nd. Somehow we don’t think the royal standards and light bars mounted behind the grille are normal Audi options – but we might ask next time we stop by the showroom. You can get a few more looks at it in the gallery of high-res photos below.

  • Hurst Mustang Pace Car brings $120,000 a Barrett-Jackson

Hurst Mustang Convertible Pace Car at Barrett-Jackson – Click above for high-res image gallery

Last year Hurst brought out their spectacular 50th Anniversary Dodge Viper to Barrett-Jackson, selling it for $275,000 to benefit their favorite charity, Victory Junction. They are back again for 2010, this time with the Mustang Convertible Pace Car that was actually used in the Mustang Challenge race series. The car was donated by Woodhouse Auto Family, Hurst Performance Vehicles and other suppliers to help children attend Victory Junction’s newest Camp for Kids in Kansas City.

The car features plenty of performance upgrades including a Roush supercharger, Eibach suspension, Magnaflow exhaust, 20-inch Hurst wheels and a custom white interior. Being an official pace car, it’s also got the cool light bar and headlights that can alternately flash. All of that combined with the motivation of charity brought a final bid of $120,000. You can read the vehicle’s full description after the jump.

  • Sony Ericsson reports Q4 losses, but is slowly picking up the pace

Things aren’t looking so pretty at Sony Ericsson as the handset maker a little while ago posted its fourth-quarter earnings showing a loss of $270 million, pre-tax. Of course, this should come as no surprise to anyone since SE’s earnings reports the past few quarters, six to be exact, were just as disappointing. The company also recently had major layoffs and restructuring the past few months. However, SE is remaining cautiously optimistic for 2010. While other manufacturers are expecting a big rise in the cell phone market in 2010, SE sees things a little more modestly. Since smartphones and high-end devices are Sony Ericsson’s overall weakness right now by comparison to Apple, HTC and BlackBerry, we’re thinking that there is a lot riding on the XPERIA X10 with Android due out very soon.

  • Apple patent application two-fer: new gesture inputs, solar-powered iPods?

We know it’s been tough with the dearth of Apple-related speculation as of late, but it looks like we now finally have a few more clues about what the company might be up to courtesy of a pair of recently published patent applications. The first of those is a new type of gesture-based input device, which would not only be able to detect swipes and other simple gestures, but things like brushing or scooping motions that take into account force and velocity (check out an example after the break). The other patent treads a bit of familiar territory for Apple, and describes a built-in solar power system for electronic devices — such as an iPod, as illustrated above. That could apparently include solar cells covering the entire device, which could be configured to function even if they’re partly obstructed by your hand. The system would also supposedly be able to detect if the battery is completely drained and rely solely on the solar cells to power up the device or, alternatively, switch the solar cells to a “second operational state” if it detects that the battery is charged — if it ever actually exists, that is.

  • Heynsdyk 2500SF puts that old Porsche 944 to good use

Heynsdyk 2500SF – Click above for high-res image gallery

Another day, another kit car for your toupee-tousling amusement. This is the Heynsdyk 2500SF from Holland: a bespoke body placed over the engine, electronics, and drivetrain of a Porsche 944. The substantially lighter body, in galvanized steel, takes weight down to 900 kilograms (1,980 pounds) while maintaining 50/50 weight distribution. There are six engine choices, from a basic 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 163 horsepower, to a 2.5-liter four-pot S-motor with a turbo. That one will get you 250 horsepower, and from 0 to 60 in six seconds. Top speed is limited to 250 kilometers per hour (155 miles per hour).

You can buy the car as a kit or a finished product, and prices start at €14,750 ($20,798 U.S.) for the kit, or €36,995 ($52,158 U.S.) for a ready runner. Like its countrymate Spyker, what the car might lack in beauty it makes up for in unique and arresting looks. Have a look for yourselves in the gallery of high-res photos below. Hat tip to Anton!

  • How Facebook And FriendFeed Became Turkish Delights

For the past couple of days I’ve been in Turkey, absorbing the tech scene in Istanbul (tomorrow I’m in Munich, Germany, for DLD). I was invited over by the Nubridge Venture Summit which brought together a panoply of European VCs to listen to Turkish tech companies set out their wares. What emerged is a picture of a country in high growth, as this economy and its entrepreneurs latch on to the possibilities offered by the Internet and mobile platforms.

But first, let me tell you a story. Two years ago I contacted Turkey’s pre-eminent “Web 2.0″ blogger, Arda Kutsal of Webrazzi. I said let’s do a TechCrunch Europe meetup in Istanbul. Duly, a few weeks later I took a flight out, got to the hotel he mentioned and figured Arda had organised the meetup in the bar. No, said the receptionist, “It’s in the Grand Ballroom.” I headed down the hall to find about 400 people. That was the kind of thing that was going on then.

Two years on, with a packed room full of European VCs and private equity people hearing pitches from a wide range of Turkish technology companies, it’s clear the investment community is keenly interested in this market.

  • Facebook Gives Harman His Name Back, Apologizes

An update to our post last night – Facebook Snatches User’s Vanity URL And Sells It To Harman International. Facebook says they’ll be giving Harman Bajwa his /harman vanity URL back shortly:

Thanks for bringing this to our attention, Mike. We made a mistake in this instance and are in the process of returning the username to Mr. Bajwa. To be clear, the move was not driven by monetary reasons, rather trademark protection. We strive to protect trademarks from ’squatters’ — those who try to take protected terms with no legitimate claim. The message Harman received was along those lines, but clearly not applicable. Once we understood the nature of our error, we moved quickly to resolve it. We want to apologize to Mr. Bajwa for being overzealous in our efforts and regret the disruption to his account.

Here are the Facebook guidelines on trademark squatting. Which is fine for Nike or coca-cola, but definitely a grey area for trademarks that are also legitimately in use as people’s names. I’d pay to see the emails that must have been flying around Facebook this morning. But they did the right thing here, and that’s all that matters.

  • Week in Apple: the Apple (tablet?) event! It lives!

The Apple world is more on-edge than ever after Apple confirmed a rumored event for January 27 (which we, of course, will be covering live). Just like that, tablet rumors exploded in a giant fireball of fantasy and speculation. But that’s not all that happened this week (really!). Read on to catch up:

Apple confirms mystery Jan. 27 “creative” event: Apple has sent out invitations to select media outlets, confirming a special event on January 27. Will we finally see the rumored Apple tablet?

The case against a 10″ AMOLED Apple tablet: We were just as excited as anyone else by the recent rumor that Apple has been hoarding 10-inch OLED screens for a January iSlate launch. But unfortunately, after talking to the OLED Association, it turns out that there are just no 10-inch panels to hoard.

  • MUST READ: Pachauri: the real story behind the Glaciergate scandal by Christopher Booker

Article Tags: Christopher Booker, Headline Story, Himalayan Glacier Data, Pachauri Conflict of Interest

Dr Pachauri has rapidly distanced himself from the IPCC’s baseless claim about vanishing glaciers. But the scientist who made the claim now works for Pachauri

I can report a further dramatic twist to what has inevitably been dubbed “Glaciergate” – the international row surrounding the revelation that the latest report on global warming by the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) contained a wildly alarmist, unfounded claim about the melting of Himalayan glaciers. Last week, the IPCC, led by its increasingly controversial chairman, Dr Rajendra Pachauri, was forced to issue an unprecedented admission: the statement in its 2007 report that Himalayan glaciers could disappear by 2035 had no scientific basis, and its inclusion in the report reflected a “poor application” of IPCC procedures.

What has now come to light, however, is that the scientist from whom this claim originated, Dr Syed Hasnain, has for the past two years been working as a senior employee of The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), the Delhi-based company of which Dr Pachauri is director-general. Furthermore, the claim – now disowned by Dr Pachauri as chairman of the IPCC – has helped TERI to win a substantial share of a $500,000 grant from one of America’s leading charities, along with a share in a three million euro research study funded by the EU.

At the same time, Dr Pachauri has personally been drawn into a major row with the Indian government, previously among his leading supporters, after he described as “voodoo science” an official report by the country’s leading glaciologist, Dr Vijay Raina, which dismissed Dr Hasnain’s claims as baseless. Now that the IPCC has disowned the prediction made by his employee, Dr Pachauri has been castigated by India’s environment minister, Jairam Ramesh, and called on by Dr Raina to apologise for his “voodoo science” charge. At a stormy Delhi press conference on Thursday, Dr Pachauri was asked whether he intended to resign as chairman of the IPCC – on whose behalf he collected a Nobel Peace Prize two years ago, alongside Al Gore – but he refused to answer questions on this fast-escalating row.

  • Rumor: Sony Ericsson to Unveil QWERTY Android at MWC

Our good friend Loïc over at pointgphone.com has just passed along some interesting news (translated) regarding Sony Ericsson.  According to a source of his, the handset maker plans to unveil and Android-based handset with a Blackberry-esque QWERTY.  The only other details they have to go by is that it should have a 5-megapixel camera.  The handset is alleged to have a working codename of Abelin.

If true, this will make the 3rd Android-based smart phone from Sony Ericsson behind the Xperia X10 and the Robyn.  Mobile World Congress is merely weeks away so we’ll get to the bottom of the rumor either way.

  • Mayor Daley, CTA officials outline announce completion of security camera installation at 24 green line stations

Initiate Further Expansion of Cameras on System

Mayor Richard M. Daley and Chicago Transit Authority President Richard L. Rodriguez today announced a significant development in the agency’s ongoing effort to enhance safety and security on its rail and bus system.

With the installation of cameras at 24 Green Line stations, the CTA’s rail system now has 1,657 cameras at 73 rail stations.

The CTA has received $22.6 million in Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funds to enhance its security and surveillance network and is using it to expand camera coverage on its rail system.

At least one high definition camera will be installed at every rail station by this summer and additional cameras will be installed across the rail system beginning with the Brown and Red lines later this year.

The Green Line initiative cost approximately $4 million and the expansion plans are budgeted at $9 million.

The remainder of the funds will be used to further enhance the CTA’s security network. All the projects will be paid for by a combination of DHS, Federal Transit Administration (FTA) and Regional Transportation Authority funds.

CTA also is launching a pilot program to explore the feasibility of retrofitting CTA’s current rail cars with cameras. The pilot will help identify costs and the most efficient design and technology upgrades needed in order to operate the cameras.

This pilot, funded by $800,000 in FTA grants, is expected to begin this spring. New rail cars already on order will come equipped with cameras.

“Safety and security is a top priority across the city and CTA has made great progress in upgrading its infrastructure to include the addition of surveillance cameras,” said Mayor Daley.

“These cameras help police identify and apprehend those who are intent on criminal activity and also can serve as a deterrent.”

“We are pleased that the federal government recognizes the importance of having these tools available at transit agencies and provides funds that allow us to install cameras to help further protect the CTA and the City,” said CTA President Richard L. Rodriguez.

“The cameras across CTA’s rail system make real-time video available to CTA’s Control Center, the Chicago Police Department and the Office of Emergency Management and Communication.

This real-time video allows emergency personnel to assess situations and respond accordingly whether it’s a service disruption or a medical or police emergency.”

“We’re appreciative that the federal government provides the financial resources transit agencies need in order to protect its system and customers,” said Chicago Transit Board Chairman Terry Peterson.

Security on CTA buses and trains is provided by the Chicago Police Department Public Transportation Section.

Officers from the unit include both uniformed and plainclothes officers who ride the trains and buses and patrol stations.

CTA works closely with CPD to identify, apprehend and prosecute individuals who commit crimes on CTA property.

While security cameras are a useful tool, CTA also reminds customers they can assist by reporting any suspicious activity they witness.

Reporting instances of crime or suspicious activity across the system helps CTA and CPD determine how best to deploy resources.
