  • Ads in Street View Could Bolster Google's Local Ad Offering

Google sure likes giving stuff away, most of its services are free for regular users, but it’s not exactly out of the goodness of its hear, the ads it serves on most of them more than make up for the losses. And Google isn’t done yet, it’s always looking for ways to get more ads to people while still being relevant to them. One service which has remained ad-free for now is Street View. This may change though as Google is at least contemplating the idea of advertising in the city imagery service, as Cnet reports.

The way Google envisions it is actually quite interesting and in line with what’s been doing lately. Businesses which are listed in Google Local Business Center could show up on Street View in a similar way to Google Maps. The ads could be another option for small businesses which use Google’s local advertising program and would be tied to their existing accounts.

Where this could really prove useful is on mobile devices where users could see shops or restaurants close to their location. The ads would merge two markets which Google is increasingly interested in, local and mobile advertising. Local ads are already big business and there is still a lot of room to grow in the area.

Google has been making some big moves in this market trying to lure in those who ha… (read more)

  • Why Do Some People Celebrate Christmas On 7th January?

The Eastern Orthodox Church celebrate Christmas day on 7th January. The Eastern Orthodox church is the second largest, Christian institution in the world if protestantism as an entity is excluded.

The Orthodox Churc uses the old Julain calender which is 13 days behind the Gregorian calender.

In the former Soviet Republic the Bolsheviks adopted the Gregorian calender at the end of 1917 which put them in line with the rest of the Western world. However the Orthodox church who were opposed to the oppressive steps taken by the Bolsheviks to supress religion, kept the Julian calender.

In communist countries organised religion was repressed and pushed underground although it was never stamped out.

For many people in communist and former communist states religious holidays and festivals became just holidays and Christmas was regarded as many as just a holiday on January 7th.

However Russian politians do now attend church at Christmas and many people again celebrate Christams as a religious festival in Russia. The members of the Eastern Church have their traditions firmly embedded in the Julian calender.

  • @ CES: Motorola Gains Momentum With Android; Unveils BackFlip

CES 2010: AT&T says five Android phones coming, including one from Motorola

Motorola’s Co-CEO Sanjay Jha has been a busy guy. In the past two days, he’s made appearances at Google’s Mountain View headquarters, and then was at AT&T’s press conference this morning in Las Vegas.

Jha topped it off with a press conference of his own this evening to talk about the momentum Motorola (NYSE: MOT) is having as it attempts to rebuild the company focusing on the Android operating platform. Jha said it has now introduced an Android device to 23 carriers in 15 countries. Jha: “Motorola brings the global reach to the worldwide distribution. We’ll leverage the Motorola name in North America, where its still strong, and in Latin America and China.” As part of the event, Jha formally announced its latest Android device—the BackFlip, which will roll-out to multiple carriers, and likely AT&T (NYSE: T) (although he would not confirm that).

The BackFlip folds in half. Imagine a long rectangular clam shell flip phone. The design enables the keyboard to be much larger because it can use the entire surface of the device, rather than reserving a bit for the slider hinge.

In addition to the BackFlip, Jha said that Motorola has been working closely with Adobe (NSDQ: ADBE) and Google (NSDQ: GOOG) to bring Flash 10.1 to the Android platform to enable better internet browsing, such as ticker quotes scrolling across the screen. “We’ve been working with Adobe on integrating 10.1 Flash into Droid hardware, it’s quite important, and Adobe team has been doing a good job.” He said it will be pushed out to the Motorola Droid on Verizon in subsequent software upgrades.

He also announced his intention to continue to upgrade devices already in the marketplace with the latest software. The updates are important if Motorola doesn’t want to alienate its current install base by making just-purchased devices nearly obsolete. By upgrading as soon as possible, it will also alleviate some fragmentation issues within the developer community. He said the Motorola CLIQ, which runs on T-Mobile, will be upgraded to the latest 2.1 software. “This is an important part of our strategy. They have to be upgradeable and have to be able to grow with you.”

  • Yahoo BOSS To Survive Microsoft Deal In Some Form; Details Still Hazy

After months of silence, Yahoo’s BOSS team is opening up to frustrated third party developers about the future of the powerful search platform. A few hours ago, Yahoo’s Ashim Chhabra left a post on the BOSS group forum, offering an explanation for why it has taken so long for Yahoo to relay information to developers, and giving them some idea of BOSS’s fate. The good news? BOSS will continue to live on in some form, but it’s unclear exactly how things will be changing and which services will be powered by Microsoft technology — and there may be fees involved. That uncertainly will probably leave some developers on edge, but at least they know the project isn’t being scrapped entirely.

Chhabra’s post was clearly prompted by the actions of some frustrated BOSS developers, who grew tired of being left in the dark and approached the Department of Justice to talk about how BOSS will be impacted by the Yahoo/Microsoft search deal. The DOJ heard their complaints, scheduling a conference call with them for next week. Chhabra’s post may help placate them for the time being. We’ve included his full post below:

    Folks,

Thank you for your feedback. We understand your frustration. This process has been long for all of us due to the complex nature of our agreement with Microsoft, and we appreciate your patience.

Under this agreement, Yahoo! is permitted to continue offering the BOSS web service, with search results that would integrate Yahoo! services and content with algorithmic results provided by Microsoft. As always, our intention is to provide a BOSS offering as long as it makes business and economic sense to do so. We are still examining what the BOSS offering will consist of, with some services powered by Microsoft, unique content that Yahoo! currently provides, and the potential for additional Yahoo! content in the future.

Prior to the announcement of the Yahoo!-Microsoft search agreement, we’d already shared our intention to explore a fee-based structure for BOSS. We continue to explore an appropriate fee structure or other revenue model as we work through the future of BOSS.

As you know, we must receive regulatory clearance before actual implementation of the search deal with Microsoft can occur. Only then can we finalize the future shape of BOSS. Of course, we will provide additional clarity and certainty when we can.

    Thanks for your attention!

  • Bomb threat forces City Hall evacuation

At 10:05 a.m. Thursday morning, the Palo Alto Police Department received a threat from an anonymous man who claimed that a bomb had been planted at Palo Alto City Hall that would detonate at 11:05 a.m. According to The San Jose Mercury News, all 350 employees were evacuated from the nine-story building at 10:40 a.m.

While there was no explosion at 11:05 a.m., bomb squads searched the building for about two hours. Speaking to The Daily about the bomb scare, Palo Alto Mayor Pat Burt stated, “There were not any indications that it was a serious one or a genuine one.”

He went to explain that the police conducted “a routine check to make sure that there was no legitimacy to the threat.”

The City Hall staff went back to work at 2 p.m. after the four-hour evacuation.

  • “Avenue Q’s” Princeton talks about life after college

Few musicals ever address themes like education, pornography, racism and homosexuality. Even fewer shows address these themes with an ensemble of puppets. “Avenue Q,” the Broadway show that has swept the nation, is coming to San Jose for a limited engagement from Jan. 12 – Jan. 17. Intermission got to sit down with Princeton, the star puppet of the show, and ask him what life after college is really like.

i: Is college really the happiest time of our lives? Is there nothing else to look forward to?

Princeton: College was a BLAST, it’s true. And since I graduated, life definitely has its share of ups and downs. But, something good is coming, I can feel it. You never know what’ll happen next!

i: What advice would you give to those who actually are getting their BAs in English?

P: Make sure the companies you work for aren’t laying employees off before their first day. That was rough.

i: Stanford is located in the heart of the Silicon Valley, where the Internet is being further developed every day. Is the Internet really just for porn?

P: Well, my neighbor, Trekkie Monster, seems to think so. And, for me, I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t PART of my internet experience. But, I use it for other things too… I swear…

i: You’ve had your share of relationship problems. Do you have any love advice to give?

P: Honestly, I’m the last person to ask about love advice! No matter what I do, it seems like I’m always screwing up! I’m getting better, though… I think.
