Apple's latest patent probably isn't tablet related, but feel free to speculate anyway
Yeah, we’re pretty sick of the iSlate talk too, so we’ll completely refrain from predicting any possible future applications for Apple’s latest patent, a new type of LCD circuitry that better integrates capacitive touch by somehow integrating touch sensitivity into the display pixels themselves. It’s pretty obscure, techy stuff, but the result should be less circuitry within the display in theory boosting efficiency and, notably, reducing thickness. You know what that means: even thinner tablets. (Sorry, we couldn’t resist.)

Apple’s latest patent probably isn’t tablet related, but feel free to speculate anyway originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 08 Jan 2010 03:23:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

  • Waterfront Air to start flights to Macau

Waterfront Air to start flights to Macau
    07/01/2010 23:38:00

Seaplanes seem to be heading back to these shores after six decades. A local seaplane departing from Macau’s Outer Harbour in the 1950’s (file photo)
Waterfront Air looks set to finally start the seaplane services from China’s Shenzhen to Macau and Guangzhou in the fourth quarter of this year, the South China Morning Post reported.
Waterfront Air and Shenzhen Airport Ferry Terminal Services Co. signed a memorandum of understanding on Wednesday to provide services from the Shenzhen Airport ferry pier.
The company will lease a fleet of 18-seater DHC Twin Otter floatplanes for the flights. The flights would take about 20 minutes.
Waterfront Air plans to start seaplane services from Hong Kong to Macau, Shenzhen and Guangzhou next year, the report also said. The Chinese company has been planning to operate this service for almost two years ago.
In October 2008, it was reported that the firm, founded by Canadian entrepreneur Michael Agopsowicz, was planing to operate a scheduled seaplane service between a new Kai Tak Waterfront Aerodrome and the Pak On ferry terminal near Macau’s Cotai Strip.
It also plans to create a licensed water aerodrome opposite the old Kai Tak airport runway. Passengers would be taken to the Kowloon City ferry pier after the seaplanes landed.
At that time, the Tourism Commission and the Tourism Board gave their backing to the proposal because it would enhance Hong Kong’s appeal as a city with diversity and fun. But the project first needed to pass an environmental-impact assessment. The firm was planning to charge about HKD1,500 for a one-way trip, compared with HKD2,200 to HKD2,400 for a helicopter trip between Hong Kong and Macau or about HKD150 for a jetfoil. It plans to run 20 flights a day. The firm estimates 150,000 visitors will take the trips every year.
Recently, Waterfront Air’s founder and director Michael Agopsowicz told the media the company is still seeking permission from the authorities to construct licensed water aerodromes in all of the cities.
While there are extensive ferry and helicopter links between Hong Kong and Macau, he says that seaplanes tap into a different target market. “We eye the international travellers who want to add value to their trip, the affluent market,” he adds.

  • Prof. is first pediatric oncologist named ASCO president

A Stanford doctor has achieved a historic first in the medical community. Michael Link, M.D., a professor in Pediatric Cancer at the School of Medicine, is the first pediatric oncologist to be named president of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).

While the majority of ASCO presidents have been medical oncologists, who care for adults with cancer and who also make up the bulk of ASCO membership, Link’s election as a pediatric oncologist highlights the importance of children’s cases in cancer research and care, as well as the value of unity among all disciplines related to cancer.

“This reflects, I think, how pediatric oncology in many ways has led the whole field of oncology,” said Dr. Bertil Glader, a fellow professor and doctor in pediatric oncology.

“I couldn’t be more pleased or proud,” added Dr. Harvey Cohen, professor of pediatrics. “In my opinion, he is the best pediatric oncologist in the country.”

ASCO, an international nonprofit, dedicates itself to uniting cancer physicians and researchers to improve cancer prevention and care, as well as to educate physicians about the newest research developments.

Link looks toward assuming the role of president-elect in June, and he sees a particular opportunity for a global focus.

“It’s called the American Society of Clinical Oncology, but more than one-third of its members are from other countries,” Link said. “We can’t be so narrow-minded as to only focus on our own problems.”

While doctors have made significant advancement in furthering cancer technology, new procedures often remain unaffordable for developing countries. Many of the newest therapy technologies are not only extremely expensive, but also difficult to transport, and Link believes the ASCO holds a responsibility to pave the path toward greater equality.

“We can’t just be focused on the new, the more expensive, the most high-tech—we have to focus on the exportable,” he said.

In a nation engulfed in debate over healthcare, Link hopes to shape ASCO to encourage greater understanding of Medicare and Medicaid patients’ needs.

“We want to make sure these children have access to the best care, that that choice is made not on the basis of how expensive it is, but on quality,” he said.

On the other hand, he added, “We don’t want to advocate doing things just for the sake of doing them.”

Several other doctors from Stanford have served as ASCO president before, and Link’s colleagues from the Stanford School of Medicine are thrilled about his ascendency.

“This is kind of a situation where the student does better than the teacher,” said Cohen, who taught Link as a student and resident. “He has always been brilliant, and he asks incredibly good questions. He’s done earth-shattering work with children with cancer.”

“We should all be honored—this is a great tribute to his accomplishments,” Glader said.

An active member of the ASCO for years, Link has served on several committees and is currently an associate editor for the organization’s Journal for Clinical Oncology. Yet, Link says pediatrics have provided his driving passion ever since his medical school days.

“You develop a very intense relationship with the family,” he said, “taking them through a dark hour and hopefully bring them back into the light, bring back a cured child. It’s the most satisfying thing you can imagine.”

For Link, the combination of working with children in a scientific environment and fostering lifelong relationships with the whole family proved “almost an irresistible combination.”

Link sometimes hears from his patients years later as adults, and several have even become doctors themselves. “What more fun could there be?” he asks himself.

  • Celebrity Rehab 2010 Information

The detoxing process is hard especially after being dependent on a substance (whether it be alcohol or drugs) on a daily basis. Watching this process for non-celebs would be entertaining especially seeing how they all deal with withdrawal. But the celebs they have lined up for this season will make it all the more interesting.
Dr. Drew is back with a new season of Celebrity Rehab – kicking off tonight at 10 p.m. on VH1. (You can watch the whole first episode online here.) This year’s cast includes some higher-profile names like Dennis Rodman, Heidi Fleiss, Mindy McCready, and Tom Sizemore. Plus Mackenzie Phillips seems to not have had enough time in the spotlight. (I don’t know if I can handle getting to know her better than we did on Oprah last year.) McCready recently gave us a preview of her time on the show.
According to VH1, this season’s show (which airs tonight at 9 CST) will follow these in-desperate-need-of-help public figures:

Heidi Fleiss, Dennis Rodman, Mindy McCready (country music singer), Mackenzie Phillips (One Day At A Time),Lisa D’Amato (America’s Next Top Model), Mike Starr (Alice in Chains), Kari Ann Peniche (ex-Miss United States Teen) Joey Kovar (Real World Hollywood), and Tom Sizemore (Saving Private Ryan).

  • Mcelroy Alabama Rhodes Scholar 2010

College football pundits say the title game’s McQuarterback matchup clearly favors Texas. Yes, the Longhorns’ Colt McCoy has won an NCAA-record 45 games, but McElroy, a junior, hasn’t lost as a starter since the eighth grade.

Fittingly, the Rose Bowl represents center stage for freckle-faced, 21-year-old McElroy, the longtime understudy.

At Carroll he played behind Chase Daniel and didn’t start until his senior season, when he led the Dragons to a Class 5A state title.

At Alabama, McElroy redshirted his first season, then backed up John Parker Wilson in 2007 and 2008. Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy isn’t quite setting himself up for canonization, but he is a damn good student, already graduating with another year of eligibility left. He has made all As and one B in obtaining his degree in marketing. He also appears to plan on returning for his last year with the Crimson Tide. But, that doesn’t mean that he’s not already thinking of the future. He wants to study at Oxford.

“I’m actually applying next year,” McElroy said. “I didn’t want to apply and miss a year of football if I was picked. But we’ll see what happens. I wanted to obviously approach it and look into it because it is such a great honor.”

Obviously, it isn’t easy. Only two people drawn from Alabama, Florida and Tennessee will get the coveted scholarship any given year. But if Mark Ingram can win the Heisman, who says McElroy can’t snag a Rhodes Scholarship next year?

  • Editorial: Part Two, the Environmental Plan of Action

If the American people will not make economic sacrifices to hedge against global warming, they must be convinced that they will not have to, or better yet, that actions will reap benefits. Current proposed legislation certainly fulfills the first claim–making a barely noticeable economic impact. Paul Krugman–a Nobel Laureate and Princeton economist–uses a Congressional Budget Office estimate to project that the bill would only reduce annual economic growth between now and 2050 from 2.37 percent to 2.32 percent.

That slight hit could be converted to a major economic boost through one change to the proposed policies: robust federal investment. President Obama’s original request for $15 billion in annual investment for clean-energy development, recommended by a group of 34 Nobel Laureate scientists, has been considerably weakened. It must be reinstated. Yes, the federal budget is strained, but these investments are vital for American competitiveness and would pay back many times over.

Energy efficiency would be the most obvious place to start. A recent McKinsey study showed such investment could save the United States $1.2 trillion by 2020, freeing up money businesses would use to create many more jobs.

Renewable energy also holds massive potential for economic growth. With a global population that will hit nine billion by 2050 and standards of living rising around the world, demand for energy will skyrocket past its current supply, global warming or not.

If the United States does not rise up to fill this market, other countries will. China plans to invest $660 billion in clean energy over the next 10 years and is already beginning to dominate the industry. American inaction would mean continued reliance on imported energy, millions of lost jobs and another blow to a frail economic foundation. Federal investment in research and development, as Fareed Zakaria notes in Newsweek, has brought us the Internet, lasers, MRIs and DNA sequencing. It can bring us renewable energy, too.

Ideally, a cap-and-trade would mandate emissions cuts and finance such investment. Such is the case in Denmark, where they have cut carbon emissions by 14 percent since 1990 while increasing GDP by 40 percent and fostering a thriving clean energy industry. And those who claim cap-and-trade would cost American jobs ought to check the unemployment rate in Denmark: an astonishingly low four percent.

But if the political will for this cap-and-trade ‘sacrifice’ does not exist in the United States, then energy investment should garner bipartisan support, improve the economy and make a significant impact on the climate problem. Thomas Friedman, Zakaria and commentators around the country have started trumpeting this idea, originally popularized by the Breakthrough Institute think tank: Going green can pay. And only when the American people believe this will solutions follow.

  • BMW X6: laptop rubbish according to Clarkson

A coupe, with high driving position and off-road capabilities…? The BMW X6 always looked like a ridiculous car to me, and I’m happy to have Jeremy Clarkson confirm this for me. The SAV (or Sports Activity Vehicle) has plenty of BMW class and technology, with two petrol and two diesel engine options, and the buttons in the interior to boot. But apart from that, this is an unimpressive effort from BMW, where they’ve tried to do too much in one vehicle.

For example, what is the point of a coupe and a jeep all in one if the back passengers wanting to enjoy the off-road experience can’t fit in properly because of the sloping roof line…? What’s more, trying to drive the X6 is very complicated once you’ve figured out what the computer display system is actually saying, the direction in which the gear change is supposed to work and which steering wheel paddle you use to shift up or down (apparently you can do both with both…). In Clarkson’s words: “What was the boss of BMW doing when all the clowns in the laptop department were coming up with this rubbish?” See it all in the video.
