  • Looptastic for the iPhone Is a Hybrid DJ/Music Maker App [IphoneApps]

When I have nothing better to do, I love killing a few minutes with music maker apps such as Melodica or Band on my iPod touch. From the looks of it, I might have to add Looptastic to the arsenal.

Looptastic is a weird app that takes parts of DJ apps such as Ableton or Traktor, parts of production apps such as Reason, and throws a Korg Kaoss pad in for good measure. The final result: a casual noisemaker that lets you intuitively hack together a loop-based mix in rapid fashion.

The core of the app is built around a collection of sample loops that you string together to build a beat. From there you can sequence those loops and throw effects on top with the X-Y effects pad. The app starts at $5 bundled with a single style of music, but there’s also a $10 version and will soon be a $15 version that will let you import your own music. Nice. • The Evolution Of The Playstation Network – Sony Network Entertainment, Inc.

Sony CEO, EVP, and President of Networked Products & Services Group Kazou Hirai spoke to during Sony’s CES 2010 press conference about the current state of the video content available on the Playstation Network, and how similiar services will be integrated into nearly all Sony network devices in the future. This sounds very much like the promises we heard from Sony during their late 2009 Investor/Analyst meeting, where they outlined the “Sony Online Service.” If you don’t remember, the Sony Online Service will be a personal and premium digital ecosystem – the vast majority of Sony’s entertainment offerings, including music, movies, games, and books. They are also going to offer applications. Sony will also embrace many 3rd party content providers to bolster their initial offering – something they have proven themselves capable of with their current partners in the Playstation Store and streaming partners in their latest networked Blu-ray products.

Sony plans to bring this premium service to BRAVIA TV’s, VAIO Laptops and Blu-ray players. They will leverage the existing Playstation Network interface and deliver a more advanced infrastructure, one that can cater across all product lines. Fortunately, those of you with existing Playstation Network ID’s will be able to log in with the same username and password, and those of you who sign up to this new service will be able to log into the Playstation Network. Hundreds of movies from all major studios will be able be streamed in standard and high definition, with support from such studios as 20th Century Fox, Paramount, Walt Disney Pictures, Lionsgate, Warner Brothers, Universal, MGM, and of course Sony Pictures. Kaz mentioned this will start next month for VAIOs, Blu-ray players and networked BRAVIAs – as well as any Windows PC.

This venture inspired a new company called Sony Network Entertainment, Inc., with Tim Schaaf as President who will report to Kaz.

Kaz has also mentioned that more European countries will have access to the Playstation Store’s multimedia content by the end of 2010. More than 780 million pieces of content have been downloaded so far, and monthly downloads exceed 25 petabytes, which is equivalent to about 5 million single layer DVD’s.

  • Jersey Shore Fight, Jersey Shore Fight Live 2010

Ronnie claims he was provoked while he was walking home from a bar with Snooki and their costar Sammi “Sweetheart” Giancola. According to Ronnie, the other person involved in the fight was being disrespectful to his friends, shouted “racist” remarks at their African-American security guards and might have spat on him. He however regrets the incident, “I definitely felt out of place,” he says of being in jail. “It’s definitely a place I never want to go back to again. Definitely a lesson learned.”Recap: Before we get to the recap, a couple things I learned today: 1) Mike “The Situation” has said that MTV wants the same cast back for Jersey Shore 2, which would tape next summer in lovely Seaside Heights, N.J. Given the boffo ratings and publicity (even if much of it is negative), there’s no surprise in a Season 2. The return cast would be a bit of a curveball, as MTV was expected to bring in eight new tanned, tattooed, party-goers of Italian-American descent with little in the way of job prospects. I admit I liked the suggestion of ESPN.com columnist Bill Simmons, who said the Season 1 cast could be transplanted to someplace like Malibu for Season 2, to ensure they would remain weird outcasts. 2) Mike, Pauly D, Snooki and Jenni are presently charging $7,500 as appearance fees at parties and social events. Vinny is only charging $3K, which seems about right given his lack of tattoos, implants or tendency to say really stupid things. Interestingly, Ronnie and Sammi are a steal at $3,500 for the lovestruck pair. But then again that’s a lot of money to pay two people to sit in a corner by themselves and make out.
Magro and the other man had allegedly fought because the perpetrator was harassing his roomies, Snooki and Sammi “Sweetheart” Giancola, and hurling racial insults at their security guards, who were African American.

“He was just being a drunk jerk, saw the camera … [and] I think he chased us down like two blocks or something like that,” he said to . “At that point, you’re like, ‘What am I gonna do?’”

The fight was documented by MTV cameras, and will air in the January 7 episode of ‘Jersey Shore.’

“I definitely felt out of place,” he said about his time behind bars. “It’s definitely a place I never want to go back to again. Definitely a lesson learned.”

The show is no stranger to fighting. Snooki was assaulted by an intoxicated man at the Beachcomber Bar & Grill back in August. Part of the incident made it to a very special episode of the series.

  • Eaton Introduces New Gear Pump For Construction And Mobile Vehicle Applications

HAVANT, UK… Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation announced the availability of new Group 2 (SAE A) Cast Iron series pumps in its popular Global Gear Pump (GGP) line. The new pumps are available in 10 displacements from 8.0 cm3/rev) to 36.0 cm3/rev with maximum operating pressure up to 310 bar and speed up to 3,600 rpm.

This new product offering is a response to customer requirements for quieter, more durable pumps. A key benefit of the new pumps is that they are able to operate in the higher temperature environment created by upcoming diesel emission regulations. Cast iron, with its proven durability and thermal stability, is clearly the material of choice going forward, and the GGP A-Cast Iron series is ready to meet the challenge.

Because the GGP A-Cast Iron Series was engineered primarily for mobile applications, quiet operation was one of the principal design goals. Eaton’s GGPs offer advanced high-efficiency gear profiles, which provide low-noise and low-pressure ripple.

Mobile applications are also the reason the GGP A-Cast Iron Series uses cast iron material rather than the more common aluminum. Cast iron’s better thermal stability and higher strength permits more durability and extends service life when compared to aluminum pumps or similar types.

The cast iron pump extends the product line’s capabilities into a whole new range of heavy-duty applications where durability is the key factor. They use specially-designed high wear-resistant bearings to achieve high pressure and speed ratings. They also are available with B- size shafts in the A-size frame to add even more torque and pressure capacity.

Typical applications for the new A-Cast Iron pumps include skid steer loaders, wheel and front-end loaders, telehandlers, forestry equipment, agriculture harvesters and combines, fan drive cooling systems, and Industrial power units.

  • RVD expands our rotary motion control capabilities. Rotary Viscous Dampers

Rotary Viscous Dampers provide smooth control in applications that require continuous or intermittent positioning, forward, reverse and fixed path motion.

The RVD design combines low breakout friction with viscous damping to control bi-directional rotary motion in numerous applications.

Each RVD contains a solid, rotating element called a “rotor”.
This rotor is surrounded by a thin film of silicone fluid and sealed inside a stationary housing.

The RVD’s rotor provides resistance by shearing the silicone fluid, controlling the desired motion.

    Common Applications

  • Bcs Championship Score Live Streaming 2010

Deep in Texas’ territory, Gilbert was hit hard by Alabama linebacker Eryk Anders, a Texas native, and the ball was loose. As it rolled, Tide linebacker Courtney Upshaw recovered it on the 3-yard line, thus ending an chance of a miraculous comeback.Alabama’s Heisman Trophy winner, Mark Ingram, secured the Crimson Tide’s win Thursday night with a 1-yard run with 2:01 left in the game.

“That’s all we worked for. We deserve it. I don’t think anybody worked harder than us,” said Ingram.

After Ingram crossed into the end zone, he fell to his knees. It was probably mostly in relief. After dominating for much of the first half, the Tide allowed the Longhorns back into the game until the final moments. However, after Gilbert was intercepted on the ensuing series, the game was out of reach. Alabama running back Trent Richardson added another score with under a minute left to make the game seem more of a mismatch than it really was. Magnus said BCS games will air next year on the company’s ESPN360 broadband network. Thursday’s game was not on broadband because it aired on ABC. Unlike the NFL, ESPN will not allow over the air stations to air BCS games featuring their home-market teams.

It’s another change in the accepted order and, alas, not necessarily one in the best interest of viewers. In other words, nothing new here, folks. Move along.

  • Gilbert Arenas PETA “Ink, Not Mink” Campaign

Embattled NBA star Gilbert Arenas is the latest pitchman to lend his famous frame to a Bare-It-All PETA ad. Arenas bares his tattooed chest and arms (no pun intended) in a new PETA ad.

On Wednesday, the Washington Wizards guard — a three-time NBA All-Star — was suspended from the league indefinitely without pay for bringing guns to the Verizon Center and related incidents, including a locker room spat with teammate Javaris Crittenton that involved firearms. Despite all this, animal rights group PETA features Arenas in the latest ad for their anti-fur campaign, “Ink, Not Mink.”

In a press release issued Thursday, PETA happily proclaimed that they’re standing by their man — guns and all.

“From the basketball court to the boardroom, from the controversial figure to the style icon, everyone’s shunning fur,” said PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “Arenas shows that you can have a killer look without killing animals. Few industries on the planet are as foul as the fur trade, which bludgeons, electrocutes, and skins animals alive for the sake of vanity.”

  • Apple And Verizon: Are Two Star-Crossed Lovers Ready To Consummate?

romeo_juliet_1996_xl_03--film-AApple and Verizon. Two star-crossed lovers.

A few years ago, when Apple originally set out with the idea of giving the iPhone to one carrier exclusively in the U.S., they first went to Verizon. But the network balked at some of Apple’s demands, which at the time of complete and utter carrier dominance in this country, must have seemed like a joke. So instead, Apple with with AT&T, and the rest is history.

And while Apple is getting a very sweet deal from AT&T in the form of huge payments for each iPhone sold, which is pulling in billions of dollars in revenues each quarter for the company, the relationship is also the subject of much discontent. Obviously, plenty of users are fed up with AT&T complete and utter failure at times to provide a network that will support the iPhone. But word is that Apple has also not been a happy camper for some time now, as what many perceive to be greatest source of weakness for the iPhone, AT&T’s network, is something that is completely out of their control. The big question for 2010 is: Is Apple finally ready to do something about it?

Obviously, Apple would never say anything against AT&T publicly, mostly because it’s just a bad negotiating tactic. And also because even when they move beyond exclusivity, AT&T will still undoubtedly be an iPhone carrier partner. But make no mistake, Apple is talking to other carriers in the U.S., and likely has been continuously since the iPhone’s initial launch. But the one that everyone dreams of, is the same one that first turned them down, Verizon. And that’s a point which probably hasn’t made negotiations very easy. But a few signs are starting to suggest that the planets may be aligning.

Specifically, a report yesterday in TheStreet says that Apple has chosen Qualcomm to provide the chips that will power a new iPhone due this summer. Qualcomm is the key CDMA chipset manufacturer and this is important because the largest technical hold up in bringing the iPhone to Verizon is that up until now, all iPhones have been GSM-only. Verizon, meanwhile, is a CDMA network.

The report notes that the partnership will in fact lead to a Verizon iPhone this coming summer. Of course, this report comes from an analyst, and regular readers may know my aversion to trusting anything they say — especially when it comes to Apple products. The fact of the matter is that too often they’re simply dead wrong.

That said, there are other indicators that something is going on. For example, yesterday at CES, AT&T announced that it would be bringing webOS devices to its network for the first time. WebOS is of course the operating system Apple rival Palm developed for its “iPhone killer,” the Palm Pre. Perhaps even more notably, AT&T also announced that they would be launching five Android devices in the first half of 2010. Up until this point, AT&T was the only network that hadn’t announced Android device support.

    xinsrc_3620205150947031232007

It’s hard to imagine Apple being happy with either of those moves. And it’s hard to imagine AT&T doing anything to make Apple unhappy, unless they knew they were losing the iPhone. And soon.

Of course, that’s just speculation, but TheStreet’s report states as a fact that Apple’s exclusive deal with AT&T expires in June. Others have said this in the past as well. But again, analysts. This point has long been the topic of much debate. I’ve asked both AT&T and Apple numerous times when the contract is actually up, and neither will say a thing. Given that Apple has a habit of unveiling new iPhones each June, it would seem somewhat logical that June is when new contracts begin and end, but others have suggested (and made a compelling case) that the actual contract may run through the end of 2010.

Another recent report, again from an analyst, suggests that Apple and Verizon are closing in on a Verizon iPhone deal, but that there is a disagreement over pricing. And there is also talk that Apple may want to wait until Qualcomm makes a chip that is both CDMA and GSM compatible, which isn’t expected until the second half of 2010, making 2011 a more likely Verizon launch window.

So there are still plenty of clouds in the sky blocking the view, but there seem to be more signs out there than ever before that the Verizon and Apple stars are aligning. And we get more clues in a few weeks when Apple is expected to unveil its new tablet device, which may or may not have some sort of carrier network and/or carrier-run WiFi agreement that comes with it. Let’s hope.

  • Rediff Money, Rediff Money Control 2010

What would a price for Rediff be? Speculation is hovering around $1 billion, and although Google and Yahoo! are being named as the principal suitors, possible interest from Microsoft (NYSE: MSFT) and Time Warner’s (NYSE: TWX) AOL has also surfaced. For Rediff to be worth a billion dollars, though, will take some lifting by the company to any acquirer who is at least a little wise with money. Based on all the acquisition activity in the recent year, it’s hard to name one, eh?

What do you get when you cross an Energizer EnergiToGo portable charger with a hand crank? If you answered the Yogen Charger for Life, you’d be correct. Easy Energy is demoing the battery-less battery charger, and sadly for us, it didn’t work exactly as advertised. While the other demo models seemed to be working without a hitch, when we started pulling the rip cord, instead of getting a lightning bolt indicating that our BlackBerry Tour was charging, we got a reboot. Pleo (and its new maker Jetta) isn’t exactly out in force at CES 2010, but the company is here with some promises about a new and improved second generation Pleo and, perhaps more importantly, a giant version of the current Pleo. Unfortunately, it’s not for sale, and Jetta apparently doesn’t have any plans to change that in the future, so your Kota triceratops won’t be getting a buddy anytime soon. Jetta also isn’t offering anything much in the way of actual details about the next generation Pleo, but it is promising that it’ll be more than just a simple revision. In the meantime, feel free to take a wild trip through the world of Pleo in the gallery below.

We’re not ones to get overly sentimental about photos, but the Album2 would love to get us started. The device hinges on a stupid simple control scheme of three buttons, no touchscreen nonsense here, and can sort through photos, movies and music — though it’s clearly centered around the first of those three. There’s WiFi for pulling in YouTube and Picasa media, and… well, actually, that’s just about it. The screen is great, there’s a leather protective cover that flips around as a stand, and the back of the device is beautifully adorned with some raised braille-style dots spelling “album.” When it ships, hopefully sometime this year, Album2 will retail for $199. Check out a video of it in action after the break.

  • Compal Android tablet with next-gen Tegra demoed at CES (video)

Man, it’s almost like every hour we come across another tablet-esque device here at CES 2010, and this time around it’s a prototype concept device from Compal being shown off by NVIDIA. This 7-inch tablet / slate / MID / whatever was running Android 2.0 and packed Wifi — sadly, there was no GPS or Bluetooth to be found. Up top there was a SIM card slot as well as a microSD card slot for extra storage, and an HDMI out port around the side. Unfortunately, the device is plagued from the start as its rocking a resistive touchscreen instead of a capacitive one. Despite the next-gen Tegra chip inside, our user experience was pretty abysmal, with touches barely registering and general usability pretty low. However, once we got some HD video up on the display, we got to see that Tegra doing what it was made to do… and it almost made up for that horrendous resistive display.

  • Sony Trik hands-on

Guess what, we don’t even care if the official name is Trix, this product isn’t about its name, its specs, or any other such sensible consideration. This is a loud and proud homage to every urge you’ve ever experienced to “express yourself.” Whether yourself is a Yankees fan, a surfer, or a crazed Twilight aficionado, there are interchangeable covers to appease most (bad) tastes. We took a quick peek around this iPod / iPhone dock, and for those who care, we’d say the Trik actually looks like a well-formed tune deliverator that might very well be worth the $130 asking price. Audio testing in the booming halls of CES was a futile affair, but there’s plenty of time before April’s release date for you to hear them for yourself and to pick a tasteful cover to demonstrate your individuality with.
