  • Tata Nano Goes to Detroit

Although some still consider the Tata Nano as being two small for such a big country, the Indian manufacturer and Tata Technologies (which, by the way, has a regional headquarters in Novi, Michigan) seem to think otherwise. Why else would they bring the Nano, in all its glory, to Detroit, for all to see starting January 14.

Now, we all know what all of you are wondering: would the Nano attend the 2010 North American International Auto Show? No, it won’t. The Nano will be showcased… (read more)

    10.01.2010 r.

Postanowiliśmy po raz drugi poświęcić go onkologii dziecięcej.

  • T-Mobile to discontinue @Home service

    t-mobile-@home

About a month ago, one of our tipsters hit us up to let us know that T-Mobile was probably in the process of shutting down their @Home service. The @Home service allowed T-Mobile customers to make home phone calls via a T-Mobile router connected to the internet. The @Home service was an available add-on to most wireless service plans offered by T-Mobile for a modest $10/month. Bad news for future @Home customers, though, because another circulating rumor confirms what we reported a month ago — T-Mobile has supposedly halted future investment in the @Home service. Current customers can continue to use the service and T-Mobile will continue to support it for the time being. Once the current inventory of @Home routers has been sold, T-Mobile will no longer offer this service to new customers, though. Any T-Mobile customers interested in jumping on board, should do so tout de suite.

  • Light Blue Optics’ Light Touch turns any surface into a color touchscreen display (video hands-on)

Ever heard of a small company called Light Blue Optics? Probably not. But it’s companies like LBO that make events like CES truly worthwhile. Tucked away in a small suite overshadowed by the million dollar spreads owned by industry giants like Samsung and Sony is a tiny startup looking to attract the attention of OEMs with its full-color holographic laser projection technology. The Windows CE-powered Light Touch represents the company’s very first effort to create an interactive projector that allows users to interact with the displayed image as they would a modern touchscreen display. Despite our skepticism, we came away suitably surprised — impressed even. Granted, our hands-on was performed in a lowly-lit room on par with the lighting you might find in a fine restaurant. Still, the 15 lumens were effective at lighting videos and the touch sensitivity was far more accurate than we expected — so good that we were quickly typing out phrases on the QWERTY with few mistakes (admittedly taking a reasonable amount of care to strike the right “key”). The projector only supports single-touch at the moment though multi-touch is just a software tweak away. See the video after the break and prepare to be suitably amazed at watching a laser projector create a touchscreen display.

  • XstreamHD actually available for pre-order

    XstreamHD demo

No we can’t believe it either, but it actually looks like we can take XstreamHD off the vaporware list in a few months. Now there are no guarantees in life, but starting today you can pay $25 for the right to one of the first XstreamHD systems off the assembly line. The reminder of the $399 bill will have to paid on April 30th when it ships and includes a 1TB Media Server that can store the high quality pre-fetched HD that gets beamed down via satellite or HD recorded via the three ATSC tuners that’re built-in. You also get one HD Media Receiver that’ll extend the signal into another room and all the accessories like a ZigBee RF remote and cables — you can go Pro for an extra $100 if you have the need for hi-fidelity analog outputs on the receiver. We’ll be keeping a very close eye on this one as it does sound very interesting, but you’ll have to forgive us for being skeptical because we’ve been hearing about how great it is for about two years. Full release after the jump.

  • Mckinney Isd, Mckinney Isd Report

Cheerleading coaches, like coaches of sports teams, should be able to choose their squads, he said. He added that having three coaches and a coordinator involved guarantees objectivity in the process.

At the board’s request, the administration had surveyed past cheerleader candidates and parents. Seventy-five percent said they were satisfied with the current process, but 63 percent said coaches should have input in the selection.

Since coaches don’t currently have input, Crowe said he found the survey results a bit confusing.

Fifty-nine percent of those surveyed favored letting juniors in good standing automatically make the squad as a senior. Forty-one percent opposed that idea.

The choosing of cheerleaders for next school is to occur in March through tryouts at McKinney Boyd High School.

Below are details of the selection approach that the administration took to the board tonight, and will now go forward with, Cunningham said.
I have begged McKinney ISD to allow students to take advantage of these great opportunities, but the district has refused allow them to participate during the school day.

Due to limitations in scheduling and other factors, some students are faced with taking “knock off” classes because there are no other options. This does not provide an adequate, challenging education.

I applaud Shapiro for supporting the TxVSN, but I hope she realizes that students cannot take advantage of these great educational opportunities until local districts grant their permission.

  • International Differences in the Size and Roles of Corporate Headquarters: An Empirical Examination

    Published: January 7, 2010
    Paper Released: December 2009
Authors: David Collis, David Young, and Michael Goold

    Executive Summary:

Are small headquarters more nimble and efficient than large ones? Not necessarily, according to HBS adjunct professor David Collis and coauthors David Young and Michael Goold. Even within a single industry in one country, the variance can be enormous: In Germany in the late 1990s, for instance, Hoechst, the chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturer, had only 180 people in the headquarters function at the same time that Bayer had several thousand. This paper seeks to fill gaps in the research by using a unique database of over 600 companies in seven countries to determine whether systematic differences in the size and roles of corporate headquarters between countries actually exist, and if so, how they differ. In particular, the authors examine whether there is a systematic difference between market- and bank-centered economies, and between developed and developing countries. Key concepts include:

    • Contrary to popular expectations, corporate headquarters in the United States are about twice the size of European counterparts yet appear to be more effective.
    • It is not universally valuable to have small corporate headquarters. While companies with small headquarters can be successful, it is clear that larger headquarters can also be correlated with high performance and executive satisfaction with their role and cost- effectiveness.
    • Japanese headquarters are substantially larger than elsewhere—a factor of nearly four times Europe. However, those headquarters are becoming smaller because of dissatisfaction with their performance.
    • The developing country model of headquarters appears to fit none of the developed country models.
    • There is no “market-centered” and “bank-centered” model of corporate headquarters, suggesting that at the level of key corporate decisions, other phenomenon have important independent influences.
    • The size and role of corporate headquarters vary widely both between countries and within countries. There is more variation within each country than there is between countries.

    Abstract

This paper examines differences in the size and roles of corporate headquarters around the world. Based on a survey of over 600 multibusiness corporations in seven countries (France, Germany, Holland, UK, Japan, US, and Chile) the paper describes the differences among countries, and then applies a model of the factors determining the size of corporate headquarters (Young, Collis, and Goold, 2003) to systematically examine those differences.

The data shows that there are significant differences among countries in the size and role of corporate headquarters, and strongly suggests the existence of a developing country model, a European model, a US model, and a Japanese model of corporate headquarters. Contrary to popular expectations, corporate headquarters in the US are about twice the size of European counterparts. Headquarters there exert a higher level of functional influence and have larger staffs in certain key areas, such as IT and R&D. US managers are generally more satisfied than their European counterparts with their larger more powerful headquarters which suggests that, at least in the US context, large corporate headquarters can create value.

Japanese headquarters, as might have been expected, are substantially larger than elsewhere – a factor of four times larger than in Europe. However, those headquarters are becoming smaller because of dissatisfaction with their performance. It is clear that having headquarters the size of the Japanese firms in the survey is not conducive to value creation.

More specifically, the evidence cannot refute a hypothesis that the slope of the relationship between firm size and the size of corporate headquarters is the same across all countries, but that there are significant differences in the intercept for Chile, the US, Japan, and the European countries. What the data indicates is that at a firm employing 20,000, a European corporate headquarters would on average employ 124 individuals, a US headquarters would have 255 employees, and Japan 467 employees.

The paper also examines differences between countries in the extent to which they perform the two key corporate tasks of control and coordination. The US and Chile chose to be somewhat more interventionist in the traditional tools and processes used to monitor and control business units – setting strategy, budgets, and administering capital budgets. However, there was a significant difference in the degree of influence in operational affairs between countries. The US and Japan exerted far more influence than the other countries over every activity from IT and purchasing, to marketing, R&D and HR issues.

The US was also found to have significantly larger legal, tax, and treasury functions than the common European model, perhaps reflecting a more legalistic institutional structure. Japan also has significantly larger tax, treasury, and corporate management functions, but overall was not that much larger than the common European model.

While the causes of these observed differences cannot be directly determined from the research, suggestions are made that the institutional infrastructure, the size and homogeneity of the domestic market, and cultural factors within countries are important underlying drivers.

  • Report: Whitacre says 100+ GM dealers to be reinstated, pessimistic about Saab sale

When General Motors went into bankruptcy, the company sent pink slips to 1,130 dealers that didn’t meet a certain (unknown to us) set of criteria. The wind down of those dealers was supposed to be completed by October 2010, but a new law mandating a six-month arbitration process could give some of those GM stores a second lease on life. GM Chairman and interim CEO Ed Whitacre reportedly told a group of reporters that he expects many dealers to be reinstated, guessing the final number will be somewhere “in the hundreds.”

Whitacre added that the process GM used to determine which dealers would make the cut was “pretty arbitrary,” but he added that some process was necessary even though it could never be perfect. In other words, some good dealers were given the axe while some bad dealers have a shot to be reinstated. The rules of arbitration require that interested dealers provide notice by January 25 and a judgment will be delivered on each case by June 15. Regardless of how many dealers are reinstated, Whitacre said The General will likely make money in 2010. That’s surely welcome for a company that has seen more than a bit of bad news over the past few years.

While Whitacre was on his soap box, he also took a few moments to discuss the future of Saab, or the likely lack thereof. The interim CEO reportedly said that anyone who wants Saab could merely “show up with the money,” but so far nobody has brought money to the table (we’re guessing Spyker is a bit nonplussed at such talk). Whitacre added that the company would continue trying to find a buyer even as the embattled Swedish brand is wound down.

  • Video: Taylor Swift Performs “Love Story” At Sony’s CES 2010 Press Conference

Taylor Alison Swift (born December 13, 1989) is an American country pop singer-songwriter, record producer and actress. At one point in 2009, Taylor had 8 songs on the Billboard Top 100 chart along with CMA wins for Album of the Year, Female Vocalist of the Year, Video of the Year, and Entertainer of the Year. Not only did Taylor sell out her 52-city tour in 2009, but her 2010 tour dates sold out within minutes of being onsale. Her multi-platinum album, Fearless, is nominated for Album of the Year at the 2010 Grammy Awards, along with 7 other nominations. Forbes ranked Swift 2009’s 69th-most powerful celebrity, earning $18 million.

Taylor’s rise to superstardom might seem at times to have happened in the blink of an eye, but in reality it has taken a decade of hard work. Her family recognized Taylor’s talent and determination at an early age, and they started taking regular trips to Nashville to shop her music around. She began writing with local songwriters, and after a few years, during which the family made the decision to move to nearby Hendersonville, Tenn., a showcase at the Bluebird Cafe caught the eye of music-industry veteran Scott Borchetta, who was planning to launch a new label. What he saw on that stage was a young girl with an innate ability to entertain and a true gift for writing great songs.

Taylor Swift surprised onlookers with her unannounced performance of “Love Story” at Sony’s CES 2010 press conference (starts at 1:40). Briefly before that she spoke to Sony’s Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President Sir Howard Stringer about how she will use Sony products in 2010 to share her “beautiful experiences” online and also mentions her upcoming tour. The screen behind her was showing the performance live in 3D, too. I think we both can agree that 3D isn’t necessary to enjoy this, though.

For all the good things that leviathan Samsung comes up with, they have to spoil it somehow. Now, I’m not saying that the tech behind this ID card is teh bad, but it’s the principle. Winston Smith, where are you?

The idea consists of an ID card with an AMOLED display that looks normal until you bring it up close to an RFID card reader. Then, Shazamalamadingdong! The display lights up, giving the stern border guard who’s giving you the once over a 360-degree close up of your head. • Google Increases Bid for On2 to $133 Million

Google has been on somewhat of an acquisition spree lately, but it hasn’t always worked out for the best. In fact, some of the biggest deals are still in the works and being held up, either by regulators, in AdMob’s case, or by disgruntled shareholders as is the case of On2. The latter may soon change though, as Google and On2 have jointly announced a revised offer which would put more money in the hands of the On2 shareholders.

Under the revised merger agreement, Google will equate every On2 common stock share with 0.001 of a Google class A common stock share, as in the previous proposal, but will also pay $0.15 per On2 share in cash. The deal was originally valued at $106.5 million amounting to $0.60 in Google common stock per On2 share. With the additional cash incentives, the deal is now worth $133 million.

“The revisions to the terms of the merger agreement serve, in part, to address the fact that, since the acquisition was first announced in August 2009, the market value of Google’s Class A Common Stock has increased significantly while the value of the acquisition has remained fixed for On2’s stockholders,” the two companies explain.

“By increasing the consideration offered to On2’s stockholders by an additional $0.15 per share in cash, On2’s stockholders will receive additional … (read more)

  • Kodak Waterproof Playsport Hands On: It Might Be the New Pocket Cam to Buy – Kodak playsport – Gizmodo

From my admittedly quick hands-on, I’ve pretty much decided that the Kodak Playsport is the most practical pocket camcorder to date.

    Why?

It’s rugged and waterproof up to a modest (though useful) 10 feet. That’s nice. But what you can’t tell from a spec sheet is that it’s wonderfully shaped and very solid in your hand—probably more solid than any other pocket cam I’ve held. The rubber grip is perfectly positioned to add…grip, and the HDMI/USB ports are plugged with a latch-protected stopper.

Basically, I trust that it’s actually waterproof, especially as the demo unit was still working after being submerged for 8 hours.

  • Was The Tudor Period A Time Of Peace?

No, it was not – it was actually a time of great political turbulence with many wars.
One of the worst jobs to have in Tudor times was that of a soldier who had to fight in wars. Many fought in battles that were part of a long series of wars between 1562 and 1598.

By the mid 16th century, soldiers had to face guns and muskets as well as swords, arrows, pikes and axes. The injuries were horrendous and the treatment was not really very useful. Limbs were often damaged. Battlefield was filthy and antiseptics were not available. This meant that limbs damaged in battle usually became infected and had to be amputated.

Amputation was a very nasty business. Several people had to hold the soldier down. Even though he was given a whack on the head from the surgeon’s mallet to knock him out, he would have suffered tremendous pain. Few survived long after this ordeal.

  • Russell Brand And Katy Perry Marrige Photos

The 34-year-old comedian is said to have made manager Nik Linnen his best man, and asked him to get cracking on his speech to ensure it will be ready for the ceremony.

Details of Brand’s unusual proposal have also emerged, with the experience seemingly typical of the comedian’s eccentric taste.

A worker at the luxurious Taj Rambagh Palace hotel in Jaipur, where Russell popped the question, told the Sun newspaper: ‘He had organised a special dining experience. We set a table in a garden with candles everywhere.

Then they were taken to the Mughal Garden – which was decorated by flowers and candlelight.

‘Mr Brand had given his butler the diamond ring to hide among the flowers. Miss Perry found it, he proposed and she immediately said, “Yes”.

‘After that they requested 45 minutes of privacy. They looked like they were beautifully in love.’
