  • Mirasol shows prototype reader-like device playing back color video, might be headed for the Kindle

You know that Kindle you’re so in love with? Man, that’s so 2009. Mirasol showed up at CES with a display technology that’s been in the works for around a decade, and it has finally reached the point where ODMs and OEMs are talking shop about integrating said panel into all manners of future devices. In the past, the company has stuck to making screens for relatively minuscule devices, but its latest display is a 5.7-inch XGA color screen that would fit just perfectly within your next e-reader. We spoke at length with executives, and they’re currently predicting an ebook reader running Mirasol in Fall of this year. What we’ve heard “around” is that the device will actually be new Kindle running a Mirasol display — we can’t confirm it, but it sounds logical. What’s interesting, though, is that this panel is not only color, but it can play back video when used with the right processor. In other words, a powerful enough Mirasol reader could double as a small tablet, and we imagine you could actually browse the web with some level of enjoyment. The demo we were shown was nothing short of stunning, and we were told that it could scale up to fit within 9 to 10-inch slate / tablet PCs. It requires no backlighting whatsoever, and instead relies on ambient light to show its stuff. We were told that future devices would be priced competitively, even to LCD / e-ink rivals, and we can safely say we’ll be bummed if we hear the word “delay” when autumn rolls around. Don’t make us frown, Mirasol.

  • Dilip Chhabria Modified Cars Price Information

Dilip Chhabria who is highly praised auto designer globally, announced that Imperator sedan is launched in union with the DY Patil Group of the DYP-DC Centre for Automotive Research & Studies

“Matter of love & design relates to matter of heart,” Chhabria enlighten the new design. He added, “We aspire to build up proficiency that embodies this, united with business & manufacturing dynamics.”

Mr. Chhabria said he has not frozen the concepts to be unveiled at the Auto Expo, but a person with knowledge of the development said that major work on the Nano has been completed. It carries a panoramic wind-screen and the interiors are packed with the latest gizmos, similar to those found in the Ambierod incarnation of what was once India’s most ubiquitous four-wheeler. At Auto Expo 2008, Mr. Chhabria transformed the Ambassador into a three-seater coupe inspired by American Hotrods bikes.

Just like the Ambierod, the Nano will have a mobile LCD screen for movies, internet, navigation and games as well as customised instruments panel that is also beamed onto the screen. The Rs 4-crore Ambierod was sold even before the concept was unveiled in January 2008 to a Dubai-based NRI.

“Selling such cars is not an issue. The issue is how to conceptualize the design,” Mr. Chhabria said. The changes have been incorporated without stretching the Nano’s size. Mr. Chhabria has managed to pack luxury in the small car by converting it into a two-seater from the original five-seater. The car is meant for long drives and has a door-mounted camera for rear vision which can also record clips which the driver may otherwise miss on the move.
Dilip Chabaria has some very unique and interesting cars displayed at the Auto Expo.

First is a Red Imperator with 28” wheels, one huge hydraulic Butterfly Door and Massive Head and Leg room. Vivek Oberoi was there giving interviews and he said it has become his favourite car. The red Imperator definitely looked glossy and a complete style statement in itself. Check out the Red Imperator images:

  • Hands on and video: Lenovo’s Lephone

Lenovo gave us a chance to check out their latest smartphone today at CES 2010. It’s Android-based with a complete facelift and hardly any of the original OS sticking out. I doubt they intended it to be, but it seems like a sort of interesting mix of webOS, iPhone, and Android features. I quite liked it.

From what I was told, the plan is to release the device in China first, then expand to the US. There were no carriers mentioned, and they were still working that out for China, so I wouldn’t even speculate just yet. But I was impressed by the phone and the complete little ecosystem they had going.

The Sprint Overdrive is a mobile hotspot, not unlike the aforementioned MiFi. The idea is simple: turn it on, and you’ve got a WiFi access point pulling down data via Sprint’s third and fourth generation networks.

We just got our hands on the device for the first time, and while it’ll still be a few days before we’ve given it a rough enough run-through for a full review, we’ve got some first impressions to share.

  • Best Buy Ousts Napster CEO, President

The online music landscape is evolving quickly, though it’s not exactly where it should have been at this point, and it’s easy to forget that this has been more or less 10 years in the making. If it weren’t for Napster, the file-sharing revolution, things might have looked a lot different today and most likely for the worst. Quite a few years ago the site decided legal was the way to go, or maybe some people thought they could capitalize on the Napster name, but it hasn’t worked out like it was supposed to. With the service stalling for the last couple of years, Best Buy, the newish owners, decided it’s time to oust long-time CEO Chris Gorog along with president Brad Duea.

Best Buy says it’s part of a “streamlining” process which would give the retailer a more hands-on approach. “As part of our ongoing efforts to accelerate our growth in digital entertainment, we are currently making changes to our Napster business unit. These changes are part of Best Buy’s efforts to streamline Napster’s executive structure and more effectively integrate Napster’s corporate activities into Best Buy.”

What the company doesn’t say, but is more than obvious, is that it was clearly dissatisfied with Napster’s performance a year-and-a-half after it acquired the music subscription service for $121 million. The … (read more)

  • Editorial: Response to Copenhagen, Part One of Two

This December, environmentalists around the world pinned their hopes on the greatly anticipated U.N. Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen; an attempt to reach a binding international treaty to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. But even before the talks started, enthusiasm waned as countries quibbled over a series of underwhelming promises. Sure enough, disappointment reigned when the outcome yielded scant progress: a vague, 12-paragraph accord that reiterated a set of goals with no real plans to achieve them.

Domestically, the prospects of combating climate change look no better. The Senate seems poised to tie President Obama’s hands by forming a brick wall of resistance against the cap-and-trade bill up for vote this year, even though it offers only a paltry three percent cut in carbon dioxide emissions from 1990 levels by 2020 (the European Union was willing to go as high as 30 percent). Even Democratic senators have lined up in opposition to the President, with their sentiments summed up by Sen. Kent Conrad: “Climate change in an election year has very poor prospects.”

Indeed, with an economy only barely reemerging from disaster, opponents of the legislation are sure to lambaste any form of carbon taxation for costing jobs and stifling growth. But in reality, the economic crisis is nothing but a smokescreen for the actual political reason causing Congress to keep whiffing on this issue: only 36 percent of Americans attribute global warming to humans.

The natural instinct this statistic brings out in climate policy advocates is a corrective one–teach the science better and teach it more–but unfortunately, such efforts have proven inadequate. It is time for environmentalists to come to grips with the deeply-rooted intractability of the public’s view of climate change. After years of scientific consensus on virtually indisputable evidence, scores of publicity campaigns and a president who proclaimed the dangers of global warming while riding a wave of popularity into the White House, the American public still does not get it.

And it never will. Environmentalists can never convince the public of the exigency of reducing emissions because, at its core, this debate is not about the facts. British columnist George Monbiot called the Copenhagen conference “a battle between two world views,” and a person’s world view is a difficult thing to change. Certain political factions have made it clear that they cherish indiscriminate pollution as an unalienable right. No amount of physics and chemistry and data will change that. And by excoriating environmentalists for conspiring to trample freedoms and smother economies, they have drawn enough support to pose an indelible obstruction, stopping climate progress in its tracks.

That is why it is time for a paradigm shift in the climate change conversation–an environmental audible. If the American people will not make economic sacrifices to hedge against global warming, they must be convinced that they will not have to, or better yet, that actions will reap benefits.

See tomorrow’s Daily for part two of our response to the Copenhagen Conference.
