  • The Hacker Fair: Where Job-Hunting Developers Get A Chance Show Off Their Skills

For most people on the prowl for employment, job fairs are something of a mixed blessing. Yes, they can sometimes lead to job opportunities. But it’s often very difficult to separate yourself from the dozens (or hundreds) of other prospective applicants in attendance — at the end of the day, you’re probably just another resume in the stack. The Hacker Dojo, a community center that caters to developers in the Mountain View area, is looking to turn that model on its head with The Hacker Fair. Where developers actually get to show off their coding talents to the employers in attendance.

    Here’s how they describe it:

At the Hacker Fair, the job seekers are the ones giving demonstrations, and the recruiters are the ones walking around.

Think of it as a “science fair” where the “science projects” are the developers’ personal and side projects, the “judges” are recruiters, and the “prizes” are interviews and hopefully job offers!

The event will be taking place on January 16th from 10am – 1pm, in Mountain View CA (you can find more details on signing up here). It will be attended by some of Silicon Valley’s most well known companies, including Yahoo, Microsoft, Mozilla, Yelp, and plenty more. Microsoft is even sponsoring breakfast.

For those who attend, feel free to let us know how it goes in the comments. I’m guessing a few of the hackers may get creative with their projects, and employers won’t know what to expect, which should make things even more interesting.

  • ‘Climate science’ is an oxymoron. Time for Zero Tolerance of Green agendas by Gerald Warner

    Article Tags: Gerald Warner

Wow! That Copenhagen package really worked. Global warming has been dramatically reversed. In fact, if Al Gore could see his way to turning the heat back up just a little, most of us would be deeply appreciative…

“Climate science” is the oxymoron of the century. There is not a city, town or hamlet in the country that has had its weather conditions correctly forecast, over periods as short as 12 hours, during the past week. This is the “exceptionally mild winter” that the climate change buffoons warned us would occur as a consequence of global warming. Their credibility is 20 degrees below zero.

Yet nothing shames them, nothing persuades them to come out of the bunker with their hands high and “fess up”. Patronisingly fobbing off the public with fabricated excuses has become second nature to them. Latterly they have been concocting alibis about the Gulf Stream to explain Britain’s Arctic conditions. Uh-huh? Is it the Gulf Stream that has frozen the Vistula and given Poland a temperature of –25C? Is it the Gulf Stream that has caused the worst blizzards in Beijing since 1951?

  • Doubts cast on warmest decade by Paul Gorman, Stuff.co.nz

    Article Tags: World Temperatures

Doubts are being raised about the significance of new figures showing the past decade has been New Zealand’s warmest on record.

Average national temperatures over the past decade were just a few hundredths of a degree Celsius higher than in the 1980s, the previous warmest.

A National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (Niwa) statement yesterday reaffirmed its statements that the decade was likely to be the hottest recorded.

However, the new statement failed to include figures.

Blue Skies Weather forecaster Tony Trewinnard said it was doubtful a few hundredths of a degree was such a statistically significant amount on which to base such statements.

  • You Could Not Make It Up: Cold weather ‘doesn’t undermine global warming science’

Article Tags: You could not make it up

The current cold weather gripping the UK does not undermine the fact the world is warming, experts said today.

Stephen Dorling, of the University of East Anglia’s school of environmental sciences, said it was not surprising the cold period raised questions over climate change – but the snowy weather should not be used as evidence against it.

He said: ”It’s no surprise that people look out of their window at the snow and find it hard to rationalise what’s going on with the longer term trend.”

But he said it was wrong to focus on single events – whether they were cold snaps or heat waves – which were the product of natural variability.

  • #PROJECT-Muharraq: “SALMAN INDUSTRIAL CITY”

    Salman Industrial City ‘key milestone’
    Posted on » Thursday, January 07, 2010

JOBS at the Salman Industrial City are expected to more than double to around 34,000 within a few years.

Investments in the venture, which already house 160 companies, are also expected to more than double to nearly $8 billion (BD3bn).

The forecast came as His Majesty King Hamad officially laid the foundation stone for the city yesterday.

It was originally due to be called the Hamad Industrial City, but was renamed yesterday on instructions from the King.

The ceremony was attended by His Royal Highness the Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander, Ruling Family members, ministers, Shura and Parliament members, dignitaries and other guests.

Industry and Commerce Minister Dr Hassan Fakhro said investments in the city were undergoing a remarkable surge, with around $3.5bn (BD1.3bn) having already been invested.

"We believe that this growth will continue and reach more than $7.6bn in the next few years," he told the ceremony.

Dr Fakhro said the city was an ambitious industrial initiative of His Majesty, embracing the Hidd Industrial Area, which includes dozens of the most important industries in the kingdom; Bahrain International Investment Park (BIIP), which has large advanced manufacturing projects and Bahrain Investment Wharf (BIW), which is one of the unique projects in Bahrain for its quality, size and management.

Around 15,500 people are already employed in these areas and this is expected to grow to around 34,000 in just a few years, said Dr Fakhro.

He paid tribute to His Majesty’s vision and said the ceremony marked yet another milestone in building a solid underlying structure for the future of Bahrain.

"As part of Bahrain’s Vision 2030 for economic development, this achievement compliments the great strides that have already been achieved," he said.

Dr Fakhro also applauded the far-sighted policies of His Majesty’s government, led by the Premier, in developing the project and putting in place appropriate policies and strengthening the infrastructure, to transform the Economic Vision 2030 into concrete steps.

He said the Crown Prince, who is also chairman of the Economic Development Board, has played a key role in transforming this vision into a pioneering, unique and promising reality.

The King’s presence at the inauguration was testimony to the importance of the development and highlighted his personal interest in all matters related to developing Bahrain, said Dr Fakhro.

He said His Majesty’s concern regarding the national economy and economic development, especially in the industrial sector, had been known for decades.

"It is indeed the main engine of growth of the economy and without doubt, it compliments his continued dedication to developing the historical political process," said Dr Fakhro.

He said King Hamad’s clear vision and ambition for Bahrain were based primarily on industrial development.

"As we know the industrialised countries underwent the industrial revolution," said Dr Fakhro.

"This first happened in Britain and then subsequently in the surrounding countries of Europe and in America. This was the launch of the future of contemporary civilisation in which we live today."

He said King Hamad’s initiative in being present at the ceremony was also a foundation stone in developing a Royal Economic Authority, which under his guidance would transform the sea area north-west of the site into a thriving economic city, the largest and most progressive in Bahrain.

"I believe that this authority will underpin the future economic development of Bahrain and the underlying role of the private sector in our country, because it will contain a great many environmentally-friendly, advanced industries, and will include a new Bahrain Future Sea Port and an international airport," said Dr Fakhro.

"This will potentially be a new platform for the delivery of services and green eco-friendly energies, in addition to the development of the oil and gas industry."

Dr Fakhro said His Majesty’s vision for the project would build Bahrain’s economic future and link the country with the region through causeways and highways and hopefully will meet the country’s needs and enhance its economy even further.

He paid tribute to investors who are part of the industrial city.

"We must never lose sight of the importance of the private sector entrepreneurs and managers to our overall well-being," said Dr Fakhro.

"It is their courage; their vision and their dynamism which helps create the opportunities for men and women of all ages to secure employment in a variety of disciplines."

MANAMA: Investments in the Salman Industrial City are expected to more than double to nearly $8 billion (BD3bn) in the next few years.

The forecast came as His Majesty King Hamad officially laid the foundation stone for the city yesterday.

The ceremony was attended by His Royal Highness Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and Economic Development Board chairman, Ruling Family members, ministers, Shura and parliament members, dignitaries and guests.

Industry and Commerce Minister Dr Hassan Fakhro said investments in the city were undergoing a remarkable surge, with around $3.5bn (BD1.3bn) having already been invested.

"We believe that this growth will continue and reach more than $7.6bn (BD2.8bn) in the next few years," he told the ceremony.

Dr Fakhro paid tribute to His Majesty’s vision and said the ceremony marked yet another milestone in building a solid underlying structure for the future of Bahrain.

"As part of Bahrain’s Vision 2030 for economic development, this achievement compliments the great strides that have already been achieved," he said.

His Majesty said "this pioneering project promises a more radiant future for Bahrain and its people on all levels".

He described the mega city as reflecting his development strategy and Bahrain’s Economic Vision 2030. "The city is a new industrial start for Bahrain and the cornerstone of our ambitious vision and strategy," he said.

Initially named King Hamad Industrial City, His Majesty renamed the iconic development after the Crown Prince. He highlighted the importance of the project as a key complement for the iconic Khalifa bin Salman Port, the biggest in Bahrain.

He also pointed out its strategic location, being close to Bahrain International Airport and the highway leading to King Fahad Causeway.

The city, he said, will also benefit from the planned friendship Bahrain-Qatar Causeway.

It will play a pivotal role as a catalyst for industry and commerce and a cornerstone for investment and service infrastructure. It will also benefit from oil and gas resources, in addition to the Free Trade Agreement bonding Bahrain and the US.

He hailed the kingdom’s booming economy, paying tribute to the pivotal role of the private sector in spearheading its growth.

"Bahrain has gained the edge in attracting leading industrial companies and huge capital thanks to the efforts of its skilled people," he said.

He paid tribute to the government led by HRH the Premier for "laying the foundations for the colossal monument, outlining policies and modernising infrastructure".

He also hailed HRH the Crown Prince for his key role in "transforming the ambitious and pioneering Economic Vision 2030" into a tangible project.

He thanked Dr Fakhro and officials for their efforts in organising the ceremony.

HRH the Crown Prince yesterday sent a letter of thanks to His Majesty for naming the industrial city after him.

He pledged to turn the iconic development into a beacon of constructive and productive work and a catalyst for development and economic objectives meeting people’s aspirations.

"I will always be up to your expectations for you are my first mentor who taught me that work and production are sacred and that serving Bahrain is an unequalled duty all have to answer," he said.

  • Smartfish ErgoMotion Keyboard fingers-on

The crew at Smartfish have been working overtime on their world hunger-ending, carpal tunnel-killing, and totally innovative peripherals, and they’re finally ready to introduce the complement to its ErgoMotion mouse: the ErgoMotion keyboard. We got to lay our overworked, underfed fingers on a prototype on display at Digital Experience, and although it’s certainly nifty, we can’t say we’re rushing to buy one. Our key presses felt somewhat shallow, but we’ll cut the crew a little slack because it’s still a prototype. The selling point here is the fact that the keyboard itself is segmented in two, and is programmed to reconfigure itself periodically — a phenomenon that definitely takes some getting used to. The movements, although subtle, are definitely noticeable, but see for yourself in the videos after the break.

Deep down, we all sort of knew that the day would come when a ThinkPad would finally feature more color than its signature keyboard highlights — and the company obliged such trepidations with not one but two new color-loving ‘Pads announced here at CES. One of them, the “definitely not a netbook” X100e, has already found itself been candidly photographed while making its way out of a retail box. Featuring a comprehensive gallery of angles of the new machine — which include some comparison shots making the X200 look bulky — the read link should provide plenty for the ThinkPad loyalist that wants to be in the know. If you want it quick and dirty though, video of the unboxing awaits just past the break.

Finally, my dream to tour India came true.

This time I will post pictures straight away, without long narrations because I will be extremely busy for the next 3 weeks. I really enjoyed southern India, people are very friendly everywhere, the country is pretty geared towards tourism with lots of facility for tourists and many foreign tourists around, food is great especially in Kerala though I expected massive contructions ongoing at full-swing in each Indian city that I visited, based on very healthy GDP rise of India for last year, which was not the case.

    Here is my itenirary:

Dec 30th– Kuala Lumpur to Trivandrum, heading to Kanniyakumari, onwards to Madurai
Dec 31 – Madurai + Alagha Temple, then proceeds to Coimbatore by bus
    Jan 1 – Coimbatore–> Ooty –> Coimbatore –> Trivandrum ( all by bus )
    Jan 2 – Trivandrum
Jan 3 – back again to Malaysia.

Don’t try telling anyone between Boston and Beijing about global warming; they might just hit you with a snow shovel.

The worst blizzards in decades have struck across the northern hemisphere. Seoul, the capital of South Korea, has had 27cm of snow in a day – the heaviest fall since records began more than 70 years ago. European countries from Britain to Poland are bracing themselves for a record-breaking cold snap, while plunging temperatures have already claimed many victims in India. In the extreme north of China, temperatures have dipped as low as minus 32°C.

Nor is it only the northerly latitudes that are experiencing bizarre weather. After years of drought, parts of Australia are now being declared natural disaster zones after torrential rainfall caused rivers to rise by several metres, triggering floods. Even the normally placid climes of the UAE have experienced upheaval, with rainfall reaching near-record levels.
