  • 2011 BMW 3 Series leaks out ahead of Detroit – special U.S. market performance model mooted

Don’t expect an official confirmation from BMW for another week, but some of the automaker’s anticipated updates to its 2011 E92/E93 (3 Series Coupe/3 Series Convertible) have already leaked into cyberspace. The team over at Bimmerfile is reporting that the exterior of both models will receive revised “sporty” front fascias, complete with LED lights and minor tweaks to the interior. Turbocharged 335i models optioned with either the M Sport Package or the standard Sport Package will be fitted with 19-inch alloys (a bump up from the current 18-inch offerings). Anthracite Bamboo trim will reportedly be a new interior option that will be joined by a new exterior color, and paddle shifters will be standard fare for vehicles without manual transmissions.

Keeping enthusiasts smiling, BMW will reportedly offer an “is” version of the refreshed two-door models. Exclusive to the U.S. market, the special variants are expected to be configured with either DCT or a Sport Automatic transmission. In addition, unique styling and special aerodynamic bits will differentiate them from the standard models. As expected, the interiors will be fitted with M Sport equipment as well. Best of all, the twin-turbocharged N54 under the hood will likely receive its own set of horsepower-boosting enhancements, much like those found on the recently announced Z4 sDrive35is.

  • New Enterprise Associates Bags Nearly $2.5 Billion For Thirteenth Fund

New Enterprise Associates (NEA) this morning announced (PDF) the official close of its thirteenth fund, which it began investing in May 2009. At nearly $2.5 billion, it is comparable in size to NEA’s prior fund, which closed in 2006 and was just over $2.5 billion.

According to NEA, its fund XIII represents an estimated 17 percent of all U.S. venture capital funds raised in 2009 and is the largest single fund raised since 2007. The new capital commitments brings the venture capital firm’s total to more than $11 billion across all of its funds.

NEA, which has subsidiaries in both China and India, primarily invests in healthcare, energy, consumer and enterprise technology companies. The firm ranked number 4 on our list of most active VCs, which we published in October 2009 on our sister site TechCrunch Trends.

Some of its portfolio companies that will likely be most familiar to TechCrunch readers are Loopt, 23andMe, Vuze, Engine Yard and Millennial Media.

Its most recent investments were GroupOn (our coverage) and Playdom (our coverage), and it’s worth noting that NEA was the sole backer of Teracent, which was recently acquired by Google for an undisclosed sum after raising just south of $6 million.

  • Toshiba launches family of media-friendly laptops

toshiba t135Toshiba grew its market share in the U.S. laptop market in 2009. The Japanese computer maker plans to hold onto those gains with a new family of laptops being launched at the Consumer Electronics Show this week in Las Vegas.

The laptops come in several types. The ultrathin Toshiba Satellite T100 series has a T115 model with an 11.6-inch screen and a T135 model (pictured) with a 13.3-inch screen. They use Intel’s CLV processors and get nine hours of battery life. They come with a sensor that shuts down the hard drive if the machine is dropped. They also have HDMI (high definition multimedia interface) ports, and you can charge universal serial bus (USB) devices with it even if the machine is in sleep mode. The T115 costs $449 and the T135 costs $499. Both machines are under four pounds. Toshiba plans to use AMD Neo processors in its ultrathin line starting in the first quarter.

Toshiba’s L series laptops are more expensive, premium machines, with screens that are 15.6 inches or 17 inches. The M series and the P series will have more of an entertainment focus. Toshiba launched its newest Qosmio gamer laptop in the fall. That machine has an 18.4-inch display and costs $1,449. It will be refreshed in the first quarter with a new Nvidia graphics chip.

The laptops have a lot of the standard new Intel chips that any manufacturer can use. But they also have some software features that set them apart.

One of them is the Toshiba Media Controller, which lets you do easy home networking. It lets you move your media from one computer on a network to another, tapping into new features of Windows 7 Premium edition. With it, you can play content from one machine on another. Another new software feature is Bulletin, a kind of virtual bulletin board you can use to do projects or organize daily tasks. It’s like a place to hang virtual sticky notes. It will be on touch-enabled Windows 7 machines in the first quarter.

Another feature is Toshiba ReelTime. This lets you see a timeline of your backups related to a single file. You can go back in time and filter out photos, documents or videos.

toshiba nb 305Toshiba also announced yesterday its Toshiba Mini NB 305 netbook (pictured), a second-generation machine that is smaller than a laptop and is meant for surfing the web. Toshiba was slow to join the netbook parade started by Asus. Toshiba’s first netbook shipped in the third quarter, and the business is still less than 10 percent of the company’s revenues. The new netbook has a 10.1-inch screen and a full-sized keyboard. The best thing about it is the 11 hour battery life, up from nine hours for the earlier model, based on the MobileMark 07 benchmark.

The Mini NB 305 costs $399 and comes in blue, brown, or white. It has an Intel Atom n450, a gigabyte of main memory, a 250 gigabyte hard drive, and the starter version of Windows 7. A $349 version has a high gloss black finish and a 160 gigabyte hard drive.

  • Video chip startup Marseille Networks has faster, cheaper way to make chips

marseilleMarseille Networks is coming out of stealth today and plans to launch new video chips for TVs. That, by itself, is nothing remarkable. But the company says it has designed those chips using a new kind of virtual prototyping tool that can cut the costs of chip development dramatically.

Designing custom chips can cost $15 million to $20 million, which is one reason that we don’t see that many new chip startups like Marseille. But Amine Chabane, chief executive, said in an interview that the company’s design tools can shave months off of the 18 months to two years that it takes to design chips — and save millions of dollars in the process.

For now, the company is keeping the technology to itself and using it to design it own video chips. Chabane says the company is launching three new video chips this year to show that its technology works. It has a test chip in a customer’s hands now.

The road will be tough. The Santa Clara, Calif.-based company has raised $5 million and has 20 employees. But companies such as Marvell, Broadcom, and Intel are investing heavily in video chips for TVs and other video-related products. Silicon Optix was a competitor, but its assets have been acquired by IDT and others.

On the design tool side, vendors such as Synopsys and Cadence have been making tools for years that are aimed at making the design process easier and less expensive. Chabane said that Marseille’s tools let chip designers see what the consequences of their designs are through simulation. They can try out different options to see how the chips work before they pull the trigger and send the design off to a chip factory.

“They can get the look and feel of the chip,” Chabane said. “You don’t have to gamble $15 – 20 million building the wrong product. Once the customers love the design, we go to mass production. That helps us mitigate risk.”

There are a lot of ifs here, to be sure. It sounds very similar to what hardware and tool companies already say they do with products such as field programmable gate arrays. Those FPGAs, however, are big, fat, “kitchen sink” chips. Designers can customize them to do exactly what they want, but the chips stay big and fat and expensive to fabricate. Chabane says that his tools let someone design a slimmer chip in a cost-efficient and completely custom way.

Chabane has been around a while. Before he co-founded Marseille in 2005, he held management positions at Conexant Systems and C-Cube Microsystems. If the technology works, then Marseille can expand its business and will have the option of licensing its design tools to others. The company isn’t yet naming its customers.

  • Lady Gaga Tour Going Broke

Lady Gaga’s hit “Monster Ball Tour” is reportedly facing a serious deficit, despite being completely sold out.

The “Bad Romance” charttopper – who describes her stage show as “ostentatious and over-the-top” – takes a financial hit every night she performs on the North American leg of her tour, which has so far overspent by more than $2 million even though fans quickly snatched up tickets to every concert.

According to new reports, Gaga’s massive tour costs have been run up by the singer’s elaborate taste in stage design, costumes, and props — including a $50,000 bathtub she used while making a promotional appearance on the UK TV talent show The X Factor last November.

“The concerts are losing money hand over fist because they’ve spent a fortune on pricey costumes, technical equipment and elaborate set designs. She spent $500,000 on one stage alone,” a set tattle blabbed to Britain’s The Sun this week. “But Lady Gaga gets what Lady Gaga wants. Her wardrobe is huge and she wants to shock – and that costs serious money.”

According to her spokesman, the 23-year-old singer/songwriter just “doesn’t care” about finances. While she has already overspent massively, Lady Gaga’s bills are expected to soar again when she picks out a completely different set for the European part of her tour.

“I can’t comment on figures but it wouldn’t be a surprise. Gaga puts everything into her live shows. I wouldn’t want to be her accountant,” he told the tabloid.

  • Why America’s Retiring Boomers Doom Us To Bubble, After Bubble, After Bubble… (GS)

    baby boomers dog

Following Ben Bernanke’s big speech in Atlanta (not to mention the perpetually rising stock market) there’s been a lot more talk about bubbles, how we can prevent them in the future, and whether we’re in a new one already now.

On this question, David Goldman has been making a salient point that deserves more attention: What we’re experiencing is really an asset dearth.

Gretchen Morgenson’s recent hit-job on Goldman Sachs (GS) and its synthetic CDOs kind of hinted at this, though she got the equation wrong.

As she interpreted it, Goldman Sachs manufactured these real-estate backed synthetic CDOs, marketed them to pension funds, and then because of that, when it all came tumbling down, the effect of the collapse was magnified.

In reality, there was incredible demand for higher-yielding assets, because with all the retiring boomers, there was a shortage of decent yielding non-synthetic assets.

And we’re still in that exact same boat. As David Goldman notes, corporate issuance of all kinds of assets: IPOs, corporate debt, convertible debt, etc. has fallen off a cliff.

Specifically, here’s total issuance for the past several years:

    2000: $1.2 trillion
    2001: $1.57 trillion
    2002: $1.48 trillion
    2003: $1.9 trillion
    2004: $2.2 trillion
    2005: $2.62 trillion
    2006: $2.98 trillion
    2007: $2.73 trillion
    2008: $1.1 trillion
    2009: $1.34 trillion

So the number has fallen off a cliff, but the huge sums being socked away in 401(k)s, pension funds, (not to mention traditional savings), etc. has to go SOMEWHERE.

So every time there’s a little bit of yield out there, all the money has to chase it immediately. There’s no choice. It’s not a matter of being greedy. It’s mandatory. And so the boom and bust cycle must go on.

  • New Study Shows Hereditary Factors Contribute to Aneurysm Formation in Twins

Heredity for aneurysm much stronger among identical than fraternal twins

A new study in the January issue of the Journal of Vascular Surgery(®), published by the Society for Vascular Surgery®, reveals robust epidemiological evidence that hereditary factors contribute to aneurysm formation in twins.

Researchers in Sweden reviewed the data of 172,890 twins born in that country since 1886 and found 265 twins who had developed abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs). These individuals ranged from 48 to 94 years of age; 81 percent were male.

Carl Magnus Wahlgren, MD, PhD, from the department of vascular surgery at Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm, said that this was the largest AAA population-based twin study to date.

“There were seven sets of identical (monozygotic) as well as five sets of fraternal (dizygotic) concordant pairs,” said Dr. Wahlgren. “Concordance rates represent the probability of developing AAA for an individual with an affected twin.

The identical pairs had a 24 percent probability that an identical twin of a person with AAA would get the disease. Their risk was 71 times higher than that of the identical twin of a person without AAA. The probability rate for the concordant fraternal twins was 4.8 percent.

In contrast, there were 44 identical and 197 fraternal discordant pairs in the AAA group.”

Researchers also reviewed the data for twins with AAA ages 55 years and older, then possibly excluding genetic connective tissue disorders such as Ehler-Danlos and Marfan syndrome, the odds ratio still was significantly higher for identical as opposed to fraternal twins.

Heritability of 70 percent of the total trait variance was estimated and the remaining variance was explained by non-shared environmental factors with no support for a role of shared environmental influences.

“Our twin model provides a powerful means of examining the total genetic contribution to a given disease especially a complex trait such as AAA, and phenotypes (genetic makeup and environmental influences) can be defined to maximize chances of successful gene mapping,” said Dr. Wahlgren.

“Unlike family or sibling studies, potential confounders such as the variability of disease prevalence with age are removed. This model relies on important assumptions including random mating, no interaction between genes and environment and equivalent environments for identical and fraternal twins.”

The study had only one female concordant twin pair with AAA; researchers said they could not draw any conclusions about a possible stronger heritability in men or women.

They noted that in other regions the proportions of type of effects could differ because of environmental factors; also in the cases of aneurysmal disease with several genetic and environmental factors, the liability model assumes that the disease will occur when there are enough contributory factors to push the individual’s liability above the threshold.

According to the authors, this study emphasizes the importance of evaluating family history in patients with AAA and supports ultrasound scan screening of unaffected siblings. “The data can improve the information given to first-degree relatives of patients with AAA regarding the risk,” said Dr. Wahlgren.

“However, many questions in the genetics of familial AAA remain unanswered. The understanding about how risk factors and genotype contribute to AAA development is important for patient selection, screening and more aggressive treatment.”

  • Green Speed Air Motorbike Runs on Compressed Air. Theoretically [Green Speed Air]

No gearbox, no exhaust system, no lights sure makes for a pared-down motorbike. At least it’s got an engine, however. And a nice little stand that stops it falling over when you’re sitting on it in the office.

Student Edwin Yi Yuan is behind this air-brained invention, and he and his tutor at RMIT in Melbourne, are hoping to set a world land speed record in South Australia – once they get the stabilizer thingy off, I assume. It’s basically a stripped-down Suzuki body, with a rotary air engine fed by high-pressure air tanks. As we all know, I’m not exactly good on the science bit of stuff, but what would happen if you’re wearing heels and you puncture the tank (as you do when you’re one of those fantasy chicks with big la-las, a leather bikini and tramp shoes?) I’m almost tempted to nominate myself as a test driver to find out. I’ll have to do something about my current wardrobe, however. [Motorcycle USA via Core77]

Dave Titus, a co-founder and managing partner of San Diego VC firm Windward Ventures, notified his friends and colleagues in an e-mail blast yesterday that he’s joining the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corp. (EDC) as managing director of strategic initiatives.

As it turns out, Titus has had some time on his hands. When we talked by phone yesterday afternoon, he conceded that managing Windward Ventures is no longer a full-time occupation. “Over 13 years, we invested in 24 companies, of which six remain in the portfolio,” Titus says. Semiconductor industry veteran James A. Cole and Titus founded Windward Ventures in 1997, and the firm raised its last venture fund in 2000. Titus told me in October that Windward made its last investment from that fund in 2007, and has been unable to raise additional funds since then.

Titus also voiced a strong desire to help San Diego’s business community across a variety of industries, and says joining the EDC, “doesn’t feel to me like a big career change. It’s working with CEOs. It’s working with companies. It’s solving problems.”

The EDC is a nonprofit organization funded by local business and governments that works to support local business and commerce, provides assistance to companies interested in moving to San Diego, and seeks to improve education, transportation, water, and other resource and infrastructure issues of concern to San Diego companies. In a statement released by the EDC, Titus says he’s been working with the EDC for the past year on a variety of issues, and his new role will enable him to help build “a vibrant business culture in San Diego focused on science and technology.”

Titus was named in October as chairman of a task force to find new sources of capital for the San Diego region, which has emerged as a key concern among the technology and life sciences startups that comprise San Diego’s “innovation economy.” During our conversation, though, Titus said the task force was formed to focus on identifying capital of all kinds—and not just VC funding. Titus was an investor, board member, or both, at several San Diego tech companies, including Primary Access, Medication Delivery Devices, Sitematic, Mohomine, and Network Harmoni. He currently sits on the board of four private companies in San Diego, including Nirvanix and Xifin.

As the EDC’s managing director of strategic initiatives, Titus says, “I have a pretty broad charter. I’m able to sit down with CEOs around San Diego and ask them what do they need to grow their companies, and to expand here. And I can channel those needs to the EDC’s business development group and their policy group.”

In talking with Titus, I wondered if there are deeper concerns among San Diego’s business leaders about the regional economy. But he assures me that, “overall, we have a healthy innovation economy, given what’s going on.” On the other hand, he says, “The world economy has everybody on orange alert these days.”

Titus began his career in venture capital in 1986, when he joined Technology Funding, a Bay Area venture firm with $200 million under management. He was managing director of corporate finance in 1991, when he moved to San Diego. Before that, Titus was a founder and senior vice president of Silicon Valley Bank, which now ranks among the foremost lenders in California that serve emerging growth companies.
