3M just got done pushing out its MPro 120, and here at CES we’re already feasting our eyes on the MPro 150. For all intents and purposes, this is just an MPro 120 with 1GB of internal storage and a microSD expansion slot. We spotted it over at CES Unveiled, and while the VGA video wasn’t anything special, the ability to open and display PDFs, Excel files and PowerPoint documents (in addition to the traditional movie and audio files) was indeed a nice add for the traveling salesperson. Mr. Jyoti was hospitalized due to pneumonia symptoms last Friday. Although, he was put on ventilator due to acute breathing problems but he was improving and his condition was stable till yesterday.

Jyoti Basu got honor to be the longest Chief Minister of India. He has been the Chief Minister of West Bengal of India since 1977 to 2000. He was a front leader of CPI (M) and was a member of CPI (M) politburo since it was found in 1964.

It is reported that several party leaders are gathering at AMRI hospital. We are not sure whether he is really died because it is not announced officially but media reports are claiming that he is no more between us. He was the leader of Left Movement in India.

In 1946, he was first elected for the Bengal Legislative Assembly and later became the Deputy Chief Minister of West Bengal in the government of United Front. In 1996, the United Front chose him unanimously for the post of Prime Minister but CPI (M) politburo decided not to take part in the federal government, later Mr. Jyoti referred it as a historic blunder.
He developed breathing trouble at early morning hours and was shifted to the ventilator in the afternoon hours. He was admitted to the Salt Lake AMRI Hospital in Kolkata for the aforesaid pneumonic infection.

The death news of the iconic figure will be shocking to many of his followers as he was the pioneer of Leftist movement in India. TheWest Bengal Govt. is preparing for the mourning.

The moderate strength in the greenback we saw at the end of 2009 wasn’t just a little blip. As Danske Markets (via Fall Street) notes in a new report, speculators are bullish on the dollar for the first time since May.

Here’s what they see as some of the trends in markets as we start the year

The most recent IMM report was compiled on 29 December, giving us an indication of
year-end positioning. The unwinding of dollar shorts that accelerated in early December
continued towards year-end and significant long dollar positions were added. As a result
speculative investors turned net long in dollar for the first time since May 2009. 
• Most notably, long dollar positions were added against the euro, taking net short EUR
positions to 23 percent of open interest (compared with net long EUR positions of 30
percent of open interest just two months ago). Hence, EUR/USD risks from a position
squeeze have shifted from the downside to the upside, leaving room for an accelerated
move higher in the pair.      
• Speculative shorts have also been built up in CHF and JPY, thereby increasing the
downside risk in both USD/CHF and USD/JPY.
• On the contrary, net longs have been maintained in the commodity currencies AUD, NZD
and CAD. The price action during the first days of 2010 even suggests that net long
positions in these currencies have been built further.

Google took time from its superphone frenzy yesterday to applaud something a competitor did. The search giant lead a public cheer for Apple (AAPL), which just bought mobile ad network Quattro.

Google’s logic here is straightforward: If other big companies are buying mobile ad networks, then Washington can’t possibly be upset with us for buying AdMob.

And note that Google (GOOG) is also cheering on other mobile ad network M&A that has yet to happen — but which the industry now expects, especially from rival Microsoft (MSFT). From Google’s Public Policy Blog:

Today’s news that Apple is acquiring one of AdMob’s competitors, Quattro Wireless, is further proof that the mobile advertising space continues to be competitive. And with more investments and acquisitions in the space, including from established players like Apple and Google, that’s a sign that vigorous growth and competition will continue. That’s ultimately great for users, advertisers and publishers alike.

Of course, there’s only one player here with a dominant lead in Web advertising, so only one of them is going to get significant regulatory scrutiny, no matter how many more deals we see.

Anyway, if Google is looking for other arguments to appease the Feds, how about this one: You can’t monopolize a market that doesn’t exist yet. And while everyone’s sure that mobile advertising will be a big deal one day, it won’t be for a while.

Hoping to be a major player in virtual goods, Viximo Network is announcing today it has appointed game media veteran Dale Strang as its chief executive. The company also says that its virtual goods solutions are now used on web sites with more than 60 million users.

Based in Cambridge, Mass., the company focuses on providing virtual goods created by a pool of thousands of digital artists. Viximo’s partners sell the virtual goods in apps that run on social networks — much like Facebook’s virtual gifts platform.

Among its new partners are BlackPlanet.com, SmartDate.com, and FanIQ.com. Viximo has more than 40 brands and two dozen web publishers using its virtual goods system — including virtual goods, virtual currency, analytics, and a micro-transaction payment system.

The company last raised a round of $5 million in May, 2008, when it appointed its previous acting chief executive, Dayna Grayson, a partner at North Bridge Venture Partners. Grayson replaced the previous CEO, Rob Frasca, who left to pursue other options.

The company competes with rivals such as Live Gamer, PlaySpan, Jambool and others. Strang was publisher of Ziff Davis Media and and general manager of IGN Entertainment. He has more than 20 years of experience in consumer media, games and digital distribution.He was most recently co-founder of an ad network, 5to1.com.

The virtual goods market is expected to grow from $1 billion in 2009 to $1.6 billion in 2010, according to Inside Network.

Christopher alerts us to the news of an Apple patent application (20090325603) that was just published that appears quite similar to Google’s location tracking service, Google Latitude. What makes this story more interesting is the fact that Apple barred Google Lattitude from the iPhone app store. Of course, Apple has a history of barring competitive apps, but that’s also brought about regulatory scrutiny from the federal government over whether or not Apple is abusing its market position. Blocking an app while patenting the same thing certainly doesn’t look good. But, of course, isn’t that what patenting is all about? It’s a government granted system for blocking competitors.

Apple and Google haven’t exactly been seeing eye to eye lately. The two are increasingly stepping over each other’s feet, mostly Google so far, and it’s creating friction between the once very friendly companies. Which makes this latest post from Google, on the Public Policy blog, all the more surprising, at least at first glance. The search giant, or rather, the advertising giant is congratulating Apple for its latest acquisition of the mobile advertising company Quattro.

What this, you say, Google lauding one of its increasingly fierce competitors for a move in a market itself is very, very interested in? How incredibly gallant of Google, very sporting indeed. Not so fast though, while Google may be one of the most likable tech giants even it isn’t so well mannered. The praise has a more practical and self-serving interest, one that isn’t that obscure and one that Google doesn’t try to hide either.
