  • Rasmussen College, Inc. Strengthens Business by Investing in the Whole of Its Employees

Online Education Provider Offers Significant Development Opportunities

Recently named one of the “Top 20 Companies Hiring Now” and “Top 100 Companies for Working Families,” Rasmussen College, Inc. credits much of its success to the strength of its employee base.

Thus, as the organization begins the 2010 fiscal year, Rasmussen continues to expand its long-standing efforts to provide employees and their families with a wide range of opportunities for growth and betterment, from health care benefits to professional development.

“Rasmussen invests in the ongoing development and long-term support of every employee through a variety of mediums designed to support the whole of the employee and the qualities that enhance our organization and the communities we serve,” said Greg Finkelstein, the Vice President of Human Capital and Corporate Communications at Rasmussen.

“Tuition scholarships, enhanced medical benefits, employee professional growth opportunities and community involvement are just a few of the reasons our company is consistently recognized as a great place to work.”

By investing in its employees and their families, Rasmussen strengthens its ability to assist students as they grow, which in turn helps them strengthen their appeal to the local employers who will hire them.

Rasmussen’s impressive employee benefits package includes:

    Employee Scholarships

All scholarships awarded through Rasmussen College, Inc. are offered without an employee commitment clause. They include the Nemitz Family Scholarship Program, which is designed to support employees, their spouses, partners and children as they pursue higher education through Rasmussen College with limited investment.

The Marvin Wachman Scholarship Program is designed to afford qualified family members the opportunity to pursue master’s and doctoral degrees through the Deltak partner institutions either free or at significantly reduced tuition rates.

Finally, the soon-to-be released Thurston Manning Scholarship Program is designed specifically for Rasmussen faculty and will provide support as they pursue advanced degrees in their field of study.

    Expanded Family Benefits

Beyond the educational support provided for spouses, partners and children, Rasmussen invests heavily in its employees and their families.

With expansive family medical coverage, short and long-term disability programs and a 401(k) program with healthy organization-funded matching, Rasmussen understands the importance family plays in the success of all individuals.

    Professional Development

Rasmussen has a history of commitment to the professional development of its employees. In recent years, additional key investments were made to bolster these efforts.

In 2008, the Rasmussen system established an Organizational Development branch with the purpose of providing expanded employee support programs.

The first of these programs, the Rasmussen Leadership Institute (RLI), was launched in 2009. RLI is a forum for some of the organization’s most successful managers to interact and form relationships with company leaders, be immersed in business education and nurture their strong leadership skills, all of which contribute to their professional development.

In September 2009, 24 leaders within the Rasmussen organization graduated from RLI following more than six months of training, workshops and professional development.

    Recognition Programs

Each campus and central office has developed local awards programs to recognize its employees. One such program is the REMy Award (standing for Rasmussen Excellence Moment).

This award is given at each of Rasmussen’s central offices on a monthly basis to the team member who has displayed excellence in their professional work.

On a system-wide basis, Rasmussen also recognizes employees in academics, operations and central services through the Harlan Employee Recognition Program, given to those who have stepped outside the normal scope of their roles to support Rasmussen communities, employees or students.

    Community Involvement

By operating in partnership with local communities, Rasmussen creates a bond between the organization, its employees and the communities they serve.

In the first nine months of 2009, Rasmussen hosted or participated in more than 50 local community service projects, ranging from blood drives to Relay for Life. On July 17, 2009, Rasmussen employees participated in 3,600 cumulative hours of community service across five states as part of a company-wide community day.

The Epilepsy Foundation, Ronald McDonald House, Habitat for Humanity, Big Brothers and Goodwill Easter Seals were among the organizations that benefited from this outreach.

Rasmussen leaders understand that by supporting employees and their families, they raise levels of employee satisfaction and productivity, which guarantees excellent support of both their students and the communities they collectively serve.

Many of the programs in Rasmussen’s suite of benefits were suggested and are currently fostered by employees at all levels and not merely by senior administration.

This reinforces the reputation Rasmussen has established as an employer of choice around the country. As Rasmussen expands into new regions, it continues to focus on recruiting top talent to maintain and expand its culture in new marketplaces.

  • Logitech Seeking Android Developer for New Product

A recent job posting listed on Logitech’s website indicates a need for a “super-star engineer” to help develop a breakthrough product which combines “an Android UI with web based content and media services”. It is unknown as to what type of product is in development, but the job listing describes the need of a developer with the ability to create “simple and elegant UIs that are the window into a world of web based streaming media”.

The position is within Logitech’s “Digital Home Group” department, which seems to rule out any interest in a mobile product. Engadget surmises they may be looking to incorporate Android into its Squeezebox lineup.

Logitech Squeezebox devices already offer apps for Facebook, Flickr, Pandora, Last.fm, and Slacker Radio, most of which are also available in Android form. Building a device which integrates Android’s UI and wealth of applications would be a smart way to stay up to date with applications, without losing focus on the product itself. Although this new product may be intended to be a home entertainment offering, it is indeed possible the application in development could also be accessible by mobile devices, adding one more leg for Android to stand on as a media powerhouse.

  • Auto Expo 2010: Honda New Small Concept unveiled at New Delhi show

Honda New Small Concept – Click above for high-res image gallery

India’s Auto Expo 2010 kicked off this week and the first major concept to come out of New Delhi is this: the Honda New Small Concept.

Befitting its name, the New Small Concept is both compact and rather bland – particularly when compared to Honda’s recent stylistic endeavors – but the five-door hatch is sure to find budget-minded buyers when it arrives in both India and Thailand in 2011.

Unfortunately, details on the proposed powertrain and interior are all but nonexistent, with Honda Siel Cars India Ltd. (Honda’s Indian arm) simply stating that the HSC can fit five people and benefits from an “Efficient Energetic Exterior.” For an inexpensive runabout, the HSC has potential to be a hit in emerging markets, but don’t expect it to hit U.S. or European shores anytime soon. Make a break for the brief press release after the jump.

    UPDATE:
Live pics added to the gallery below thanks to Indianautoblog.com.
UPDATE 2: Reports indicate (Automotive News – Sub. Req.) that Honda will sell the compact hatch for around 500,000 rupees (a little over $10,000) and power will be provided by a range of engines, maxing out at 1.2-liters.

  • Apple set to purchase mobile ad company Quattro Wireless?

It looks like Apple is getting ready to take on Google in the mobile ad space as the latter had recently purchased AdMob for $750 million. Quattro Wireless, a direct competitor of AdMob, will be picked up by Apple for a cool $275 million according to BoomTown. The company has already raised approximately $30 million in venture capital funding since starting in 2006 and has worked with big names like the NFL, CBS and Univision. Quattro Wireless has also had a presence on mobile web and in-app ads on the iPhone and Android as well. It will be very interesting to see how mobile ads change in the future and where Apple plans to go with Quattro. So far, neither Apple or Quattro Wireless have confirmed or commented on the buyout but the rumor says the announcement will come very soon even possibly this morning.

  • PIMCO: How The Government’s Huge Debt Binge Means Corporates Will Rule In 2010

bond supplyAccording to PIMCO’s Mark Kiesel, the key to understanding the bond market this year is to look at relative supply.

Namely, the US government is issuing an insane amount of debt, while corporates are deleveraging and issuing relatively little debt.

Thus we ought to be nervous about the ability of investors to absorb all that Treasury issuance, and confident that investors will snap up what (relatively) little corporate debt there is out there.

Surprisingly, Kiesel likes bank debt, where he still sees value, and precious little new issuance.

  • VIZIO’s 2010 XVT LCDs go up to 72-inches with 3D, LED, WiFi & WirelessHD

Remember VIZIO’s LED backlit 55-inch XVT LCD with WiFi and widgets that debuted for two grand last year and seemed like such a value? Great, now go ahead and forget it because the company’s top of the line model in August will switch over to a monster 72-inch 480Hz LCD (above) with 3D, WirelessHD, VIZIO Internet Apps widget platform and Wireless-N for $3,499. If that’s too big to fit your budget (or in our case, tiny shoebox apartment) there will also be 55- and 47-inch versions available, with all the same features plus a new antireflective panel for those of you who like to keep the lights on during, they’ll cost $2,499 and $1,999, respectively. These 3D displays feature SENSIO technology and Bluetooth-synchronized active shutter LCD glasses from XpanD, while a VIZIO XVT Pro Wireless HDMI Adapter is available separately with 4 HDMI inputs to blast HD signals across the room on the 60Ghz band. Cinema enthusiasts also have something to look forward to, check the gallery below for shots of the 58-inch ultrawidescreen 21:9 aspect ratio XVTPRO580CD, no word on a ship date or price but when it appears later this year you can kiss black bars during movies goodbye. We’re sure we’ll see more models from VIZIO before CES is out for the smaller, less 3D friendly homes, but right now it doesn’t look like the company plans on giving up its LCD sales crown anytime soon — these combinations of features and pricing may prove very difficult to say no to. PR with other details is after the break.

  • Eye-Fi announces 802.11n Eye-Fi Pro X2 memory card

Eye-Fi just busted out at CES with its next generation WiFi-enabled SD card, the Eye-Fi Pro X2. The big features of the new 8GB Class 6 SD card are 802.11n support and the Endless Memory mode, which automatically clears photos and videos as they’re uploaded to your machine over WiFi, and there are also some new sharing options in the mix, as well as geotagging support. No word on a ship date, but it’s up for pre-order on Amazon and other retailers now for $149. Eye-Fi is also launching its new Eye-Fi Center software, which should make managing media delivered from Eye-Fi cards a little simpler — it’ll be out later this month. Couple more images in the gallery, full PR after the break.

  • Pure bursts onto US scene with five internet radios

Pure’s always had a knack for crafting elegant, oftentimes unorthodox looking radios. Problem is (at least for you Yanks), they’ve been marketed and sold exclusively across the pond. In our humble opinion, there’s no better time to change that than here at the International Consumer Electronics Show, and sure enough, Pure is making itself known on the US radar with five distinct WiFi radios. Up first is the flagship product shown above (dubbed the Sensia), which boasts a 5.7-inch touchscreen, an oval enclosure and access to the Pure Lounge — a nifty little portal that taps into internet radio stations, Twitter and Facebook. You’ll also find an auxiliary input jack and a $349 price tag, which is only topped in this lineup by the $449 Sirocco 550. Said system is much like a mini boombox, complete with the typical WiFi radio capabilities, a USB socket, iPhone / iPod compatibility, a CD player and an SD expansion slot. Moving on, there’s the $139 Siesta Flow alarm clock radio, the $249 Oasis Flow — which just so happens to be both rugged and waterproof — and the $229 Evoke Flow that originally surfaced back in 2008. Details on actual US availability is expected to come later, though the full press releases can be found after the break right this very moment.

PS3 hack plays Blu-ray backups, should send Motorstorm values soaring (video)
The PS3 has thus far proven to be something a tough nut to crack for those wanting to play backups on non-modified consoles, but word on the web is that a technique has been found that will make it possible — if the stars happen to align properly for your hardware configuration. What you need is a PS3 model capable of running Linux, Ubuntu, Windows XP on top of that, a suite of utilities, a copy of the original Motorstorm, and a Blu-ray burner. Get all that configured properly and you should be able to use the technique at the read link to play those copies of games that have thus far been expensive coasters. Given the complexity of this approach we can’t be 100 percent sure it’s legit, but for what it’s worth there is video “proof” after the break, and should you attempt this feat of hackery yourself please do let us know how you get on.

  • Toyota Etios Concept is 90% ready for production, will go on sale in late 2010

    Toyota Etios Concept

Ready to take on emerging markets, Toyota today unveiled its new Etios concept at the 10 Auto Expo New Delhi Show. The concept, which Toyota says is 90 percent ready, will go into production and will be available for sale in India at the end of this year.

Based on an all-new platform, the Etios will be available in both hatch and sedan body styles. While many may think that this is Toyota’s competitor to the Tata Nano – it’s not. The Etios will cost around $10,000 meaning it will go head-to-head with on of India’s best-selling vehicles, the Maruti Swift.

Power will come from two engine options including a 1.2L and a 1.5L DOHC gasoline engines. Plans for a diesel engine have been put on hold for now.

Toyota said it will also sell the Etios in Russia and South America. Sales are targeted at 70,000 units for India in the first year.

  • Using Web Tools to Control Legal Bills [Voices]

By Nathan Koppel, Reporter, The Wall Street Journal

It is a challenging time for corporate law firms. The recession has shrunk legal budgets, and big clients are increasingly pressing lawyers to provide the same level of service at a reduced cost.

Rarely known for their technological savvy, law firms are nonetheless turning to technology to try to address clients’ cost concerns. Some are rolling out budgeting tools to keep better tabs on expenses. Others are using software to automate tasks.

“Firms are starting to recognize that clients are not willing to pay for a custom-made suit when all they really need are jeans and a t-shirt,” says Jeffrey Carr, the general counsel of FMC Technologies Inc., a Houston-based oil services and technology firm.

One longtime gripe about law firms is that their costs are hard to predict. Typically, firms bill by the hour, and they often are hard-pressed, at the inception of a matter, to estimate how many hours they will take to complete assignments.

  • BeautifulPeople.com Dumps 5,000 Members Who Couldn’t Drop The Pounds

A social networking Web site for “beautiful people” has booted 5,000 of its members who packed on pounds over the holidays.

  • Spring Design Strikes Deal With Google To Bring More Books To Its Alex eReader

Spring Design, developer of the dual-screen Alex eReader, has struck a deal with Google that gives users of the device access to more than one million Google Books online or downloaded using Alex’s touch-screen browser and search apps. Spring Design is set to debut its Alex eReader at the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas later this week.

The device will feature a Google Android-based platform with full Web browsing capabilities, Wi-Fi connectivity, audio and video playback and image viewing in a variety of formats. The Alex eReader will also be able to run a number of Android apps.

The Alex eReader boasts a 6” EPD (Electronic Paper Display) screen which allows users to browse the Web in full color while simultaneously searching for and reading digital books. Users can thus click on hyperlinks within online books that lead to relevant information or multimedia content found online in order to enrich their reading experience. EPUB digital books can be searched and downloaded using Google API applications provided by Alex’s eReader.

Spring Design made headlines late last year when it sued Barnes & Nobles for alleged infringement by stealing trade secrets and copying features from the Alex eReader for its Nook product. Google, meanwhile, is still caught up in litigation with authors and publishers over its Book Search product, although preliminary approval of a settlement was reached on November 19, 2009.

  • Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 dropped by Vodafone

    xperiax2-dropped

We have been able to confirm that the much delayed Sony Ericsson Xperia X2, which was meant to be exclusive to Vodafone UK, has now been officially dropped.

In an e-mail circulated internally yesterday, staff were told the handset will no longer be sold by the carrier.

This move is likely to be a nail in the coffin for the troubled handset, which has seen an ever lengthening route to market, and we will likely see any already manufactured stock being sold off by small dealers, as we have seen yesterday.

We will ping our Sony Ericsson rep for comment, but I think its relatively safe to say:

  • China: Russia’s land of opportunity

In 1989, the opening of the border between Russia and China raised Russian fears of a “yellow peril”: millions of Chinese citizens flooding north into relatively unpopulated, but richly endowed, Siberia. Some contrarian publications even went so far as to suggest that Russia should just accept the inevitable and sell the whole territory to China.

Demographically, it makes sense that Chinese people would flock to Russia. Look at it in economic terms, though: China’s economy is booming, and its prospects seem limitless. Meanwhile, Russia is highly dependent on uncertain oil and natural gas reserves. Professionals already make more money in China than they do in Russia, and as China’s economy grows, blue-collar wages will likely outpace Russian pay. So, rather than Chinese people moving to Russia, isn’t it more likely that Russians would move to China?

I asked this question of many Russians in the Far East, and I usually got the same answer: It’s already happening. Thus far, the Russian migration to China seems to be only a trickle. But it’s not hard to imagine that this is just the start.

The energy in Suifenhe, a relative backwater, is so much greater than in Vladivostok-a city three times the size-that taking the four-hour bus trip across the border is like switching from black-and-white to color. The road from Vladivostok becomes progressively worse the closer you get to the border, and the land is almost empty of people. As soon as you cross the border into China, there is a massive shopping mall with red cupolas, an apparent nod to Russian architecture, and an international-standard Holiday Inn.

The mall is part of what was supposed to be a joint Chinese-Russian free-trade zone, where people would be able to come to shop and tour visa-free. But all Russia has built on its side of the border is a church, which Chinese tourists photograph through the chain-link fence.

The day I arrived was one of the biggest celebrations in recent Chinese history: the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the People’s Republic of China. Still, at the many construction projects around the city’s center, workers were on the job until after dark. I thought back to Vladivostok, where a huge suspension bridge is under construction. It is supposed to be ready by 2012, when the city plays host to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit. Ostensibly, this is a priority project overseen from Moscow, but when I mentioned to my translator that I hadn’t seen anyone working on it, she smiled. “Yes,” she said. “We notice that all the time.”

Suifenhe’s economy is driven by Russian shoppers on package tours, and the shops in the city center all have signs in the Cyrillic alphabet. One sporting goods store was called CSKA, after Moscow’s legendary soccer team. I flipped through the T-shirts on sale at another boutique and saw shirts advertising the 2014 Sochi Olympics and United Russia, Vladimir Putin’s political party.

But in addition to the many Russian tourists, there is a growing population of Russian expatriates living in Suifenhe. One, a journalist named Stanislav Bystritski, is a former reporter for a Vladivostok TV station. He moved here five years ago and produces two Russian-language shows on local Suifenhe TV, one oriented toward Russian tourists and one for Chinese people who want to learn about Russia and the Russian language.

As he showed me around town, an elderly Chinese man greeted us with a smile and said “Horosho,” which means good in Russian. It seemed a strange thing to say, but Bystritski told me it was a common greeting by Chinese people here, because it sounds like it could be a Chinese word and is easy for Mandarin speakers to pronounce.

He echoed what I had heard in Blagoveshchensk and Vladivostok-Russians come to China because it is easier to get a good job and easier to do business. “So many Russian businessmen say it’s easier to work here, there is so much less corruption and bureaucracy,” he said.

Suifenhe’s government once had plans to build a Russian quarter, reportedly with the expectation that up to 50,000 Russians might relocate here, though those plans appear to have been abandoned. Bystritski said that the rules on apartment ownership by foreigners have been loosened, so the government may have decided that there is no longer a need for a special Russian district. (We couldn’t find out for sure. Bystritski set up a meeting with a member of Suifenhe’s local government to talk about that and other issues involving Russian migrants. The official apparently assumed I would be Russian, and when Bystritski introduced me as an American, the official’s eyes widened somewhat cartoonishly. He probably wasn’t the best person, he said, and in the end I couldn’t get anyone from the local government to talk to me.)

Still, I was able to meet several Russians who had moved here. Petr is building a small complex of apartment buildings for Russians. The Suifenhe government is so enthusiastic about the project that it is bulldozing the homes of the Chinese people who currently live in the area.

Viktor, a Russian engineer who moved here at the beginning of 2008, is working on a pollution-control technology that has excited more interest in China than it did in Russia. “The Chinese are more interested in innovative projects, so there are more opportunities here,” he said. His wife, Natasha, works as a technician with Suifenhe’s pioneering (and, to a civil libertarian, rather ominous) “electronic security” system, in which surveillance cameras all over town are controlled from a spotless control room in a glass-fronted building called the Suifenhe Cyberport. She says she wants her 4-year-old son to be raised “in Chinese traditions,” and she is making sure he learns Chinese.

“People are so friendly here, I feel so comfortable,” she said. “This is my new home.”
