  • Report: Toyota sells fewer cars in Japan than rest of Asia for first time

Booming auto sales in China are credited with pushing Toyota Motor Corp’s Asian auto sales higher than those solely in its domestic market for 2009 – a first for the Japanese automaker. Toyota sold 1,354,000 units in Asia during the first 11 months of the year (an increase of 4.5 percent compared to the previous year). In contrast, the automaker sold 1,256,000 vehicles in Japan during the same period. China is credited with 622,000 units sold (a 20.7 percent increase) – that number is expected to pass 700,000 units by the end of the year.

Toyota’s North American market is still the sales leader, with 1,770,000 vehicles sold January through November of 2009. However, now that Japan has been bumped aside, the Asian market is expected to solidify its position as the automaker’s second-largest market once the numbers are finalized for 2009.

    myphonedown

Microsoft’s My Phone cloud service appears to be currently down for maintenance. The device-side synching service however still appear to be working, which hopefully suggests the web interface will be getting an overhaul and some new features.

At present My Phone users are awaiting improvements such as more storage and better integration with other Microsoft services, which will hopefully be coming soon.

Is My Phone down for you also?  Let us know below.

  • Reasons to Share Your Resolutions

Many people keep their New Year’s resolutions to themselves, but sharing some of the resolutions can be important to achieving them.

carlos-bakery-cupcakeIf you’ve decided to make a big commitment to losing weight or stopping smoking, family and friends can be a source of support. Perhaps more importantly, your smoking friends won’t tempt you if they know you’re trying to quit, and your family hopefully won’t offer you tempting foods if you’re trying to lose weight. Resisting isn’t a piece of cake! That’s especially true when you’re offered a favorite naughty food.

In addition to gaining support and acknowledgment (not tempting), sharing your resolutions may also hold you accountable. If you have someone else to answer to, then that may be a source of motivation.

My main health-related goal for the New Year is to get my cholesterol levels back down to normal. Obviously only being accountable to my doctor hasn’t really worked for me.

I tried diet and exercise, but would cheat and eat things I knew I shouldn’t. I’d also make excuses not to exercise. While I’m not overweight, there are still many reasons I should be exercising: improving the strength of my bones, helping to ward off diseases like diabetes, and of course, to get my cholesterol back down to protect against heart disease. Read 15 Reasons to Exercise for more.

Even though getting my cholesterol down is just one goal, it affects many areas of my life. It affects how I buy groceries, plan meals and dining out. I have to show strong willpower to stay away from sweets and fatty foods, and I have to make exercise a top priority in my schedule. And I’m accountable to everyone reading this post!

Since I didn’t like the side effects I experienced on statins, I’m going to give myself another three months of trying diet and exercise before going on another statin. I’ll post again on my progress in a few weeks.

  • Information Coming Soon

Another article by Tom Fiske. I believe he’s trying to send a message here!

Thomas Fiske Forty years ago, I was on the corporate staff of General Electric Company and was living in New York. In order to work for this august part of GE, one had to sign up for a minimum of three years service, so that is what I did. Little did I know I would be on the staff for three years and ten minutes. Loved the job, hated the weather.

In 1970, we were learning to use computers to do our jobs. We would dial up Dartmouth University and insert a telephone into a cradle which would receive the various sounds of our equipment through the telephone and would convert them into zeros and ones that could make their computer boogie. Dartmouth developed BASIC language, which was easy for us to use and teach. We staffers taught GE supervisors in manufacturing how to use computers to speed up their industrial engineering work and make it more accurate. That was my introduction to the use of computers in industry.

Not long after my GE education in computers, I managed to buy a small computer for tasks at home. Of course I wrote my own programs for a while, but eventually purchased a simple program to use for family history. It was an ordinary “database” program that was being used in various forms and for various purposes all over the country.

An accumulation of data led me to purchase a copy of “Horse Thief Directory” (HTD)*, a genealogy program that really contributed a substantial amount of help and accuracy, even though it was not terribly sophisticated in those days. There were other competitors that were also very good, but I stayed with the one product over the years, updating when I could. Three years ago I actually wrote a book using HTD and I published it as well.

Then the unthinkable happened: the motherboard on my computer failed. I had backups at home and on the Internet, so the only thing I lost on the failure was money. It took a while to replace the money, but you can safely bet that I had a new computer in a hurry. It was an HP desktop computer using Vista and a 64-bit internal system. Since it was a couple days before the release of Windows 7, the computer came with a free edition of that new version. I have since installed it. Now I am using Windows 7 with a 64-bit system, 6 gigs of RAM and all sorts of other good stuff.

You know what comes next – several of my applications were not compatible with Windows 7 and 64 bit systems. One of them was “Horse Thief Directory.” I might be able to run it partially with a Vista band-aid patch or a Windows XP emulator that comes with Windows 7. I haven’t tried the emulator yet. But the Vista patch does not allow me to do all that I want to do with the HTD program.

I have just checked the Internet to find the status of HTD with Windows 7 at 64 bits, and I got this message: “Information Coming Soon.”

The message did not say, “A fix is on the way.” No, it said information was on the way. I believe I am at a crossroads. The computer stays. But what about HTD? I like it and am used to it. But is this the year I give it up? I have not decided yet. (I have no relationship with HTD or its affiliates.)

This adventure causes me to see larger issues on the horizon with the state of software, not only for genealogy but for all other kinds of applications. It is this: hardware is improving faster than software. Software producers cannot keep up.
Our computer machines are developing more capacity than our software can use. And, as it often happens in a new industry, the old cannot keep up with the new. The result is that some applications are being lost. Does anyone remember Lotus? It was a database spreadsheet program like MS Excel. It has been gone for years, having quietly slipped away while no one was looking.

What is the future of genealogy programs? If they cost too much to convert to Windows 7, 8, or 9 at 64 bit and 128 bit levels, will they quietly slip away? Unable to predict the future, I can only sense that it depends on the number of users willing to pay for upgrades. Perhaps there are too many varieties of genealogy programs out there already and users will have to unite in order to have any program at all.

You may have noticed that some church groups are doing this. As attendance falls off nationally, they combine, despite some differences in theology, in order to survive. They used to complain about each other, but now they are finding that “majoring on minor” differences has been a luxury all these years.

In genealogy, we may have to begin using a program that combines certain desirable or undesirable features of other programs in order to have any program at all. It is a function of the number of users. Owners of well recognized and well utilized programs may be able to keep up with the newer hardware features. Others will fall by the wayside.

If there are too many new hardware changes, well, there are always the genealogy forms I began using twenty years ago. At least with them I did not get any “Information coming soon” messages.

  • On the Brink of Extinction: Time is Running Out for Tigers

    Siberian Tiger

Time is running out for one of the world’s most beautiful, charismatic and powerful species, the tiger.  According to conservationists, the wild tiger population has declined by 95 percent during the past century.  Only 3,200 tigers, Panthera tigris, remain in the wild today.

  • Working out with WiiFit, and antioxidants in applesauce

    Guest contributor: Karen Collins, M.S., R.D., C.D.N.
Karen Collins holds a B.S. degree from Purdue and an M.S. degree from Cornell, both in nutrition. When she’s not writing or speaking, she conducts a private nutrition practice in Jamestown, New York.

Q: Do active video games such as Wii count toward recommended amounts of physical activity?

Playing video games that involve movement and increase a player’s heart rate and breathing noticeably would be considered moderate physical activity. Moderate physical activity feels like you are exerting yourself 5 or 6 on a scale of 0 to 10. Another sign of moderate-intensity activity is that you can talk but not sing.

Researchers are just beginning to objectively study the impact of active video games on overall level of physical activity and fitness, mostly among children and teens. Results are mixed, but a few studies suggest that games such as Wii boxing and Dance Dance Revolution played at skill level 2 do involve moderate activity.

Others, such as Wii bowling and golf and Dance Dance Revolution played at the lowest skill level involve lower levels of activity, though clearly a step up from the more sedentary activity of watching television.

Actually, the intensity of activity considered moderate for any individual depends on his or her level of fitness. So for some people whose sedentary lifestyle, illness or excess weight has led to a low level of fitness, even the less-demanding video games involving whole body movement may actually be moderate activity.

Recommendations for lower cancer risk and better overall health advise us all to accumulate 30 minutes of moderate physical activity daily; those who seek weight loss will get better results by working up to 60 minutes a day.

Tune in to your body signals to determine if what you play would be considered moderate activity or if it is simply decreasing sedentary time (a separate but also worthy goal).

Q: Is applesauce as good a source of antioxidants as fresh apples?

Unsweetened applesauce is a nutritious, low-calorie source of natural antioxidant plant compounds, but not as rich a source as fresh, unpeeled apples. Making applesauce results in a loss of about 30 percent of apples’ total antioxidant content and about half of their quercetin (a particular antioxidant compound that’s been linked with good health).

Much of that loss also occurs when peeling an apple, but some additional loss may come in the heating and other processing in the production of applesauce. Applesauce and peeled apples contain only about half the dietary fiber of unpeeled apples.

However, because apples are so concentrated in antioxidant phytochemicals, even these losses leave applesauce higher in antioxidants than many other vegetables and fruits, so it’s still a good choice.

For new ways to include apples in your diet, try them in green and fruit salads and cooked with vegetables such as carrots, winter squash and sweet potatoes.

  • The Wiener Circle

A Wiener Circle char dog with “the works” is a grilled Vienna Beef hot dog on a warm poppy seed bun, topped with mustard, onions, relish, dill pickle spears, tomato slices, and sport peppers – plus a final dash of celery salt (see photo at left).
Here’s what she’ll receive: 1 slab of ribs, 1 lb. of pork, 1 lb. of hickory smoked sausage, 1 quart of their legendary sauce and 1 bottle of dressing. Also included are wet naps, bibs and a loaf of Sunbeam bread. To finish it off, I’ll throw in a gallon of the finest lemonade in the world from Auburn’s very own Toomer’s Drug Store.

Does that sound good or what?

What’s in it for me? Can you say world famous Chicago hot dogs? Hilary has come up with the perfect meal – hot dogs from Portillo’s. Here’s what I’ll be receiving should Chris Todd get it done through the air and Ben Tate on the ground: 10 of Portillo’s beef hot dogs with all the fixings. It includes everything you need to create an authentic Portillo’s style hot dog including, 10 hot dogs in a cryovac pouch, 10 poppy seed buns, mustard, relish, 1 fresh onion, 2 red ripe tomatoes, 2 whole kosher pickles, sport peppers & Portillo’s hot dog seasoning.

    I can hardly wait.

After talking with Hilary Saturday night, she seems fairly confident in her Wildcat’s chances and even talked a little smack. “I like Northwestern’s chances in this matchup,” says the NU law student. “Oh sure I was surprised when they jumped Wisconsin for the Outback, but, unlike some of my esteemed colleagues, I don’t think that’s nearly as much of a problem as they do.

“Had Northwestern not jumped Wisconsin and instead found themselves in the Champs Sports Bowl they would be looking to a matchup vs. Miami right now. That potential matchup scares me much more than the current one. Sorry Auburn fans, but unlike Miami, you just don’t have any wins on your roster that make me quake in my boots. Miami does. Further, Northwestern and Auburn are both spread offenses, so I feel confident that Coach Fitz can get the team prepared to face the Tigers.

“Finally, it should be noted that I also write on Wisconsin and given what Northwestern did to Wisconsin’s normally solid defense, I have no desire to see the Badgers up against Auburn. Maybe Miami isn’t any better, but I still like their chances more. For all these reasons, Northwestern is going to trounce Auburn in the Outback bowl and I will be ringing in this new year with my very own box of Alabama treats.”

You have to give Hilary credit. While somewhat delusional in her love for Northwestern, she’s certainly confident. I have a feeling that Antonio Coleman, Darvin Adams, Todd and Tate will hit a little harder and run a little faster than that weak, showboating school in Miami.

  • 2001 Fa Cup Final

“You don’t give up on football, football gives up on you,” said one of the Premier League’s smallest ever players. “I still love the game and as long as I can do a job I don’t intend leaving it behind.

“You are a long time retired.”

Wright has seen a lot during a professional career that spanned more then 620 league and cup games and eight clubs over a 20-year period, playing in every division in the Football League.

And, as two of his former clubs prepare to go head to head for the first of a cup double header this afternoon, he stresses the importance of ‘seizing the moment’, with his own cup memories still topping his career high points.

It was almost 14 years ago when Wright helped Villa lift the league cup in 1996 with a 3-0 win over Leeds United.

It was to prove his only major winner’s medal and a memory that will never be extinguished.

Villa and Rovers face each other in the FA Cup third round today but, with a Carling Cup semi final first leg tie against each other at Ewood on Tuesday, Wright accepts both sides will have bigger things on their minds this afternoon.

He said: “I remember the game well still. It was actually a bit of a non event because Leeds didn’t really turn up and we beat them 3-0 and it could have been more. It was a fantastic day.
Liverpool have a good history in the FA Cup although, strangely they didn’t have much success during their Golden Age from the mid-seventies to the mid-eighties. For me, one of the best FA Cup moments was when Ian Rush’s second sealed a 3-1 win over Everton – a beautiful sweeping move which was started by Rush in his own half and finished in clinical style. The whole atmosphere of that game was great, too. Both sets of fans from Liverpool, a city going through a lot of problems in the 80s with Margaret Thatcher’s government in power, seemed to take the opportunity to make a statement for the city their teams both play in – obviously better for Liverpool who won, but still a great FA Cup afternoon

  • Andrew Jones Cribs, Andrew Jones

If I were Andrew, I would have never shows the guys from MTV the ‘idea room.’ Something tells me that the camera-man from MTV just might be rich one day.
Jones was featured in a series called “Teen Cribs,” showcasing homes of impossibly rich kids, all tricked out with all manner of devices. In his case, he had also won Best Home Theatre for the wing on his Indianapolis mansion devoted to film. The place also has cameras at every door, key card entry, remotes in most rooms to control everything from toilet covers to fireplaces. It’s all due to the money from his dad, a guy who patented Voicemail, apparently.

And another key consideration: It looks as if he actually lives there, while the $17 million mansion of 50 Cent, built by swindler Jonathan Sisto and previously owned by boxer Mike Tyson, and featuring a nightclub accommodating 2,000 and a strip club, has scarecely been even visited by 50 Cent. The 51,657 square foot home on 17.6 acres, officially the biggest house in the state with 19 bedrooms and 35 bathrooms, is more like an empty luxury hotel (worth much, much less in the current market).

Fiddy had called it “the East Coast Playboy mansion” in his original episode, which aired in November 2007. But it was the actual Playboy mansion that won best party crib (“Duh,” added Miss Kardashian, helpfully).

Other winners in the show, relegated to a Saturday afternoon marathon of new “Cribs” episodes, include Mariah Carey, for coolest Cribs closet (looks like a department store), Usher got best home studio, and music producer Scot Storch got best collection of vehichles.
John Travolta won best alternative ride for his jet (beating Fiddy’s helicopter). Richard Branson won best beach bungalow, Dallas Austin the best interior design. But it was Redman’s mess of a duplex, with a missing screen door and doorbell that won “best tour.”

Joey Fatone was nominated in almost as many categories as 50 Cent, but won only for best pool. Roy Williams won for best fish tank, in which he also took a dip.
Motocross rider Brian Deegan won gnarliest home ramp and the best bachelor and bachelorette pads went to two who were once a couple, Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson.
The most unique possession went to Sebastian Bach, for some theatrical blood Gene Simmons spit out at a Kiss concert that he captured in a cup.

  • Five Best Goal-Tracking Tools

What’s a New Year’s resolution but a goal you happen to have made at the start of another year? Today we’ve rounded up the top five tools Lifehacker readers use to track their goals and resolutions.

Earlier this week we asked you to share your favorite tool for tracking your goals. We tallied up the votes, and now we’re back to share the five most popular options. Photo by lululemon athletica.

Evernote (Web/Phone, Basic: Free, Premium: $45 per year)

Many Lifehacker users already use Evernote for ubiquitous capture, so it’s only natural they’d incorporate it into their goal tracking. You can easily use the capture and tagging features of Evernote to track your goals. Tracking your weight? Snap a picture of the scale readout every morning. Trying to eat smaller portions? Take a picture of every meal you eat. Trying to cut back on non-budgeted spending? Use Evernote to capture your receipts for weekly review. Your goal-related captures will already be in your workflow and easy for you to tag and review.

    Friends and Family (Free)

A common thread among votes was that you needed an external force to help hold you accountable. Many of you use your friends and family as accountability partners, sharing your goals with them and then checking in with them. While this process could be as simple as exercising with a friend or telling your spouse about your intention to eat healthier, you can use online tools to jazz it up a bit. Previously reviewed stickK has you wager money on your goal, with friends and family as referees, wherein the money gets donated to a charity of your choice if you fall short of your goal. Not sure you want to wager money? You can share your goals list with friends and family at other goal tracking sites like Joe’s Goals or PledgeHammer.Photo by Evil Erin.

    Joe’s Goals (Web-based, Free)

Joe’s Goals is a simple web-based tool for tracking your goals. You create a list of goals and then log into Joe’s Goals every day to check off whether or not you worked towards the goal (or abstained from the vice) that day. It compiles a daily score to show you how many points you accumulated in pursuit of your goal, which is nice for those days where you do pretty good on most of your goals but fall short on others—the score still reflects on your efforts. Joe’s Goals comes paired with an also free service, Joe’s Logbook, so you can take corresponding notes to go with your goal-tracking calendar.

    Pen and Paper (Variable Cost)

Sometimes technology itself can be an impediment to tracking your goals. Pen and paper is almost always handy, and it doesn’t require you to navigate a learning curve. Two years ago we shared a simple but powerful goal motivation method in the Seinfeldian-Chain—the technique Jerry Seinfeld uses to keep himself writing, making a giant red X on the calendar for every day he writes and refusing to break the chain. Your use of pen and paper can take any shape, however, a wall calendar, a pocket planner, a stack of index cards, or a legal pad you use to log your goal-related tasks. Photo by Peter Kaminski.

    Excel (Windows, Office Home: $99)

Excel is one of the most widely used spreadsheet applications in the world, and it’s a safe bet that nearly everyone reading this article has a copy of it on their home or work computer. (If not an alternative like OpenOffice or Google Spreadsheets can do the trick, too.) Although many people think about spreadsheets simply in terms of rows and columns of data, Excel spreadsheets can be tweaked and modified to appear almost like little applications—the screenshot above is of a free weight loss template available here. You can make a simple spreadsheet yourself, but before you do, we’d highly recommend hitting your favorite search engine and looking for keywords related to your goal like “excel template goal tracking” or “excel template weight loss”. You’ll find quite a few templates in any given category that you can use or study as a guide for making your own.

Now that you’ve had a chance to look over the five contenders, it’s time to log your vote:

    Which Goal-Tracking Tool Is Best?(answers)

Have a favorite tool that wasn’t mentioned in the Hive Five? Let’s hear about it in the comments. Have a topic you’d love to see covered by the Hive? Send an email to tips at lifehacker.com with “Hive Five” in the subject line.

  • Benedict Radcliffe’s Wireframe Lambo: Yours for just ÂŁ40,000

Benedict Radcliffe’s wire art Koenig Lamborghini Countach – Click above for image gallery

In 2008, UK artist Benedict Radcliffe created a wireframe Koenig Lamborghini Countach because he needed something to outdo the wireframe Subaru WRX. Using 160 feet of 10-millimeter steel tubing, the see-through coupe was parked on the street in London for people to generally gawk at, which they did in the expected large numbers.

Now The Times reports that the piece is for sale, allowing you to gawk at it in your living room for the low, low price of £40,000 ($64,828 U.S.). You’ll need a fair bit of room since the artwork is 14 feet long and six feet wide, and probably isn’t all that light. The extra effort could be worth it – when else will you get the chance to tell someone you bought a car from Wonder Woman? You can get a closer look at the wireframe Lambo in the gallery of images below.

  • Avatar Box Office Gross 2010

There’s no way that Avatar can make $70 million for another week, but the box office gross may not drop off that badly. January is coming, which is a notoriously weak month for movies. With continued word-of-mouth, and audience continuing to spend more on 3D, Avatar could stay on top for a few more weeks.
Finally, “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” finished fifth with a weekend gross of $5.8 million, reaching an overseas total of $389.3 million. Nancy Meyers’ comedy “It’s Complicated” earned $5.4 million in 11 markets.Avatar rules box office worldwide

Following at a distant No. 4 was Nancy Meyers’ new R-rated comedy It’s Complicated, which generated a respectable $22.1 million at 2,887 screens. Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin, and Steve Martin star in this romantic comedy about a divorced couple having an affair.

Meanwhile, Jason Reitman’s acclaimed dramatic comedy Up in the Air expanded into 1,895 locations this weekend, earning $11.7 million for a total gross of $24.5 million. Potential Oscar contenders George Clooney, Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick star.

Still going strong after six weeks in release is Sandra Bullock’s drama The Blind Side, which reached a cumulative gross of $184.3 million after this weekend’s earnings of $11.7 million. The Blind Side was produced on a budget of only $29 million.

Disney’s The Princess and the Frog took a big dive and landed in seventh place, pulling $8.6 million for a total of $63.3 million. Following at No. 8 was Rob Marshall’s all-star musical Nine, which finished the weekend with a disappointing $5.5 million. Nine stars Daniel Day-Lewis, Marion Cotillard, Penelope Cruz, Judi Dench, Nicole Kidman, Kate Hudson, Fergie, and Sophia Loren.

Lange took a leave of absence from Stern’s Sirius-XM radio program in the days leading up to the show’s two-week holiday break last month. He also cancelled several stand-up gigs in recent weeks, including a New Year’s Eve engagement. The Howard Stern Show is scheduled to return live on Monday.
The comedian, 42, has been absent from Stern’s satellite radio show since early December and canceled several stand-up engagements during that time. According to his schedule, Lange’s upcoming performances in late January and February have also been called off.
He recently pulled the plug on a New Year’s Eve engagement, and per his official website, all of his stand-up dates through February have also been scrapped.

  • Statement From COP15 Prisoners – and how to support them

COP15: Danish riot police attack, 16 December 2009

from wca, 1 January 2010: “Further below is an edited version of the statement collectively released by the 11 remaining Cop15 Prisoners. Meanwhile, a website has just appeared solely concerned with repression in Copenhagen.

“Something is rotten (but not just) in the State of Denmark. As a matter of fact, thousands of people have been considered, without any evidence, a threat to society. Hundreds have been arrested and some are still under detention, waiting for judgement or under investigation…” more

  • Patricia Clarkson, Patricia Clarkson Biography

Patricia Clarkson: It was very similar – I mean, I was not a fundamentalist Christian, but I had a very similar path. I was a nice Southern girl hitting the big city for the first time with my big hair; I still have my big hair. My big hair and my non-black clothing. And that’s how I began. I went off to Fordham University; I had never lived in New York. I had been on the East Coast once when my father was stationed in Newburgh, New York but that was it. I’ve lived there now for a long, long time, pretty much since I was 19. So almost 30 years. I’ve spent a little time in L.A. here and there but I’ve basically lived in New York. I just had this feeling. I called my mother one day when I was at LSU and said, I have to go to New York. I’m not coming back. And she said, ok – as long as you go to school in New York, finish up your bachelor’s degree.
Patricia Clarkson: [Laughs] That was simple. I just got a call. I guess Andy Samberg and Justin Timberlake had me and Susan Sarandon in mind as their mothers. I was a little shocked at first; I didn’t really understand. I was like, what are we doing in the video? Remember, I’m a nice Southern girl. Then when I found out what it was, I was like, Oh my gosh. They [Timberlake, Samberg, and Lonely Island cohorts Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone] were lovely, lovely. We shot it in one day – I just showed up in the morning, we shot all these videos, we shot that night, and boom! The next night it was on “Saturday Night Live!” It was wild. It’s crazy how they do this, they work so long and such long hours, and they’re brilliantly talented. They’re all just geniuses, the Lonely Island guys.
