‘2009 has been a year of endless wars and man made pestilence. And 2010, looks like more of the same. Pandemic
emergencies have been invoked in failing or failed states such as
Mexico last spring, and more recently in Ukraine
(“Ukraine’s Fantom flu”, Foreign Policy, November 25,
2009).
Both states are in
current internal turmoil and are basically being kept afloat thanks to
an IMF loan lifeline, or billions in cash infusions. But these economic
shots in the arms from the IMF medics also seem to be accompanied by
mass scare campaigns fomented from the top and fear mongering
techniques. There is an odd coincidental timing between flu outbreaks
and chronic political- economic pandemonium. Are the authorities
attempting to cow the population into a state of submission?
Or perhaps distract their
citizenry from their dismal daily lives, punctuated by falling
standards of living, corruption, rising crime and increasing
administrative incompetence to deal with these blights? Perhaps this is
just pure conjecture on my part but allow me to surmise this: the H1N1
flu outbreaks seem to be tool to tighten the government’s grip
over its increasingly dissenting populace. This tool seems to be an
effective one.’

‘Is the Fed manipulating the stock
market? TrimTabs CEO Charles Biderman seems to think so, and he
makes a strong case for his theory in an article at zerohedge.com.
Biderman focuses his attention on the
mystery surrounding the stock market’s 9-month rally and asks, “Where
is the money coming from?” After all, the market cap has
increased by more than $6 trillion since March 9. That amount of money
should be fairly easy to trace; right?

‘The network said the
Obama administration and the long-time Yemeni dictator, Field Marshal
Ali Abdullah Saleh, had reached an agreement to allow the US to fly
cruise missiles, fighter jets and armed drones, used for remote-control
assassinations, in Yemeni airspace. Talks were still ongoing on whether
Saleh will give permission for the entry of US helicopter-borne Special
Forces.
The report comes after a
series of statements by top administration officials, including Obama
himself, pledging that “all elements of US power” will be
used in response to the failed attack on Northwest Flight 253. The
White House has been under heavy fire from its Republican opponents
over the evident security failure, and a military action would serve to
divert public attention from the ongoing revelations of how the CIA and
other US agencies ignored warnings about the impending attack.
Yemen’s foreign
minister, Abu Bakr al Qirbi, told the BBC that his country was seeking
stepped up military aid, presumably as part of a package deal—in
effect, a bribe for allowing the country’s territory to be turned
into a battlefield for US commandos.’

Your editorial on “Climategate” concludes: “What more is there to say?”. The simple answer is “lots more”, and here it is.
The last time C & E News made as big a fool of itself as it has recently with your editorials supporting the theory of human-caused global warming, was when it took seriously the claims that cold fusion had been achieved in an electrochemical cell. Every knowledgeable physicist knew that those claims were absurd, and in a short period of time, scientists all over the world showed that the electrochemists who made those claims had gotten their energy balances wrong. Out of ignorance and chauvinism, C & E News managed to morph an honest error of judgment by the electrochemists into a political turf battle between chemists and physicists. You are making the same mistake now in your totally misinformed and ignorant position supporting the theory that human emission of CO2 is causing global warming in the face of the overwhelming amount of data that proves that the theory is false. Attached are copies of my articles that summarize the available data. One of the articles also analyzes the motivations of the several groups that support the theory.

He is left trying to figure out what’s next and who he is if he is not a concert cellist. He learns a lot about himself when he becomes the only jurist unwilling to convict a young schizophrenic boy for murder. He gains insights when he agrees to teach another young boy who like himself has remarkable musical abiliities. But it is sitting on the ground in his good pants at a turnout in the road to the Wilson Observatory that he has an epiphany. Once he understands, he can move forward with his life.

In 2005, the only thing hurting Los Angeles Times columnist Steve Lopez more than his face from a recent bike accident was his pressing need for story ideas. That is when he discovers Nathaniel Ayers, a mentally ill, homeless street musician who possesses extraordinary talent, even through his half-broken instruments. Inspired by his story, Lopez writes an acclaimed series of articles about Ayers and attempts to do more to help both him and the rest of the underclass of LA have a better life. However, Lopez’s good intentions run headlong in the hard realities of the strength of Ayers’ personal demons and the larger social injustices facing the homeless. Regardless, Lopez and Ayers must find a way to conquer their deepest anxieties and frustrations to hope for a brighter future for both of them.

He started busking, using broken instruments, and struck up a friendship with Los Angeles Times columnist Steve Lopez. Thanks to that friendship, and the publicity that followed, Ayers is now off the streets and Foxx says he’s happy his story is being told. “He represents tragedy, music, friendship. It’s a compelling story.”

As a special treat, “500 Days Of Summer” stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel help us get the show started… with a shot at Horowitz. It’s pretty painful, really. You’ll see.
“10 Things” was also the first feature-film screenplay from Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith, who would go on to do “Legally Blonde” and “Ella Enchanted.” And it was the first film ever for TV director Gil Junger (“Blossom,” “Ellen”). But as Junger and the writers reminisce on one of the bonus features, everything just sort of came together for this film, and the cast and crew had a feeling that they were producing something of value.
In the lone extra in which principals stroll down memory lane, there’s no mention of influences. But one would have to imagine that, aside from Shakespeare–”10 Things” is loosely based on “The Taming of the Shrew”–the writers and/or director were in part inspired by “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” (1986). John Hughes had a knack for not talking down to teens, instead creating intelligently written films that just happened to be about the zit-set. Well, the same thing happens here. Plus, when you watch Ledger grab a microphone and ham it up while he sings in grand production fashion, “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You” to Stiles in the football stadium, it’s hard not to think of Matthew Broderick and his “Danke Schoen” parade number.
Bespectacled Joseph Gordon-Levitt was easily the most popular director attending the DVD release party. The gracious star of “(500) Days of Summer” posed for photos with fans at the reception and thanked everyone for their kind words. His short (his first project as a writer/director) premiered at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival and has been a popular staple on the festival circuit this year.
In the Q&A after “Sparks” screened, Wholphin editor Brent Hoff asked Gordon-Levitt how he got the money to fund the production. “Well, I was on a sitcom as a kid,” the former “3rd Rock from the Sun” star deadpanned.

Spike Jonze was not able to join the Wholphin gang at the Silent Movie Theatre. His piece, which was made for Sendak’s 80th birthday, features himself and Catherine Keener doing silent movie-style acting to illustrate Sendak’s memory of attending the World’s Fair. Wholphin No. 9 also includes two other Jonze-helmed “Where the Wild Things Are”-related pieces (not shown at the Silent Movie screening). One is a portrait of Sendak’s self-doubts entitled “The Creature Within,” and the other is an animated director’s statement entitled “Melbourne Years.” Additionally, the DVD liner notes contain an excerpt from a McSweeney’s interview with Jonze and Sendak.
After screening “Acting for the Camera,” director Justin Nowell and writer/brother Thomas Nowell revealed that they only had 6 hours to film their 14 page script, and that they shot using a real acting class as extras. Wholphin editor Brent Hoff praised Nowell, who recently relocated to Los Angeles, for getting such natural performances from his leads.
More so than in “Ferris,” music drives this film and helps create a “with it” tone, thanks to a beginning-to-end soundtrack featuring tunes by Barenaked Ladies, Joan Jett, K-Ci & JoJo, Spiderbait, Air, Sprung Monkey, Letters to Cleo, ATM, Brick, Cameo, George Clinton, Salt-N-Pepa, The S.O.S. Band, The Notorious B.I.G., The Thompson Twins, The Cardigans, Ta-Gana, The Colourfield, Madness, Joan Armatrading, Leroy, Semisonic, Sister Hazel, Jessica Riddle, Richard Gibbs, and (coincidence?) Save Ferris. Location filming adds a lot too, with the castle-like Stadium High School in Tacoma, Washington serving as Padua High.
The December 8th screening began with a mesmerizing underwater robotics piece directed by Wholphin editor Hoff and memorably named “Ptychogastria, Spatulate: Apprehensions Eight and a Half Empire State Buildings Down (a.k.a. A Deep Metaphor for Something I’d Rather Not Talk About).” That piece, along with Jonathan Demme’s portrait of Katrina survivors (“Joe and Linda Flooded Out of Holy Cross”) and Natalie Portman’s writing/directorial debut (“Eve”), will appear on Wholphin No. 10, to be officially released next month.

With 6:32 to play in the third, Potts threw his second TD pass, this time a 14-yard pass to Jacoby Franks, to put Texas Tech up, 27-21.
The Red Raiders, led by interim coach Riffin McNeill, got on the board first after intercepting Cousins during MSU’s first drive. Batch scored on a 3-yard run on the ensuing drive. Later in that quarter, Baker answered with a 46-yard scoring run to tie the game.
Less than a minute into the second, Matt Williams booted a 21-yard field goal. Three minutes and 10 seconds later, after a Spartans three-and-out, Taylor Potts hit Lyle Leong for a 2-yard TD pass. Texas Tech then led, 17-7.

Rs 15,000 crore capital boost
If 2009 witnessed private sector lenders tapping the equity market for capital, 2010 will see a host of government-owned banks boosting their equity capital to cater to the growing economy’s credit requirement and adhere to global norms. The government is expected to pump in around Rs 15,000 crore with the help of multilateral loans.
Additional capital is being provided to help banks grow faster since there is a cap on government holding falling below 51 per cent. Already, State Bank of India, Uco Bank, Central Bank of India and Vijaya Bank have got a capital booster. Next year may witness equity infusion by the government, which will result in an increase in the Centre’s holding in Bank of Baroda, Oriental Bank of Commerce and Dena Bank, among others. In addition, the remaining unlisted public sector banks — United Bank of India and Punjab & Sind Bank — will tap the capital market with initial public offers.
Bank mergers
At least two mergers are expected to be completed next year. State Bank of India is expected to merge State Bank of Indore with itself in early part of the year. Next up will be the Federal Bank-Catholic Syrian Bank merger. The government is also likely to move on consolidation of public sector banks.
