  • Sony Develops a “Rollable” OLED Display

Sony has developed a super-flexible 80 μm-thick 4.1-inch 121 ppi OTFT-driven full color OLED display (16 million colors) which can be wrapped around a thin cylinder. To create the display, Sony developed OTFTs with an original organic semiconductor material (a PXX derivative) with eight times the current modulation of conventional OTFTs. This was achieved due to the development of integration technologies of OTFTs and OLEDs on an ultra-thin 20 μm thick flexible substrate (a flexible on-panel gate-driver circuit with OTFTs which is able to get rid of conventional rigid driver IC chips interfering roll-up of a display) and soft organic insulators for all the insulators in the integration circuit. By combining these technologies, Sony successfully demonstrated the world’s first OLED panel which is capable of reproducing moving images while being repeatedly rolled-up – around a cylinder with a radius of 4 mm – and stretched.

Sony will unveil the results of this development on May 27 at “SID (Society for Information Display) 2010 International Symposium” in Seattle, WA (May 23-28).

Sony will proceed with the development of the solution / print based process which manufactures display devices from organic materials that are easily dissolved in common solvents. This process requires fewer steps, and consumes materials and energy more efficiently – thus has a smaller environmental footprint – compared to the conventional high temperature vacuum semiconductor process which use inorganic, silicon materials.

Sony will continue to improve the performance and reliability of its flexible organic displays because the application of these developments are expected to yield thin, light-weight, durable and mobile devices with enhanced form-factor.

So how did Sony do it?

An OTFT (Organic Thin-Film Transistor) is a thin-film transistor with organic (carbon-based compound) semiconductor. The OTFT can be directly made on a flexible substrate at low temperature below typically 180°C. It has high mechanical flexibility and therefore it is expected to realize thin, light-weight, mechanical-shock resistant and form-factor enhanced electronic devices, such as flexible display, e-paper and RF-ID tag. Because organic materials can be easily dissolved in common solvents, development of electronic circuits in a large area with solution/printed process has been attractive much attention.

Sony has developed organic semiconductor material, peri-Xanthenoxanthene (PXX) derivative, which is stable under exposure to oxygen, moisture, light and heat and improved current modulation of eight-times that of conventional OTFT with organic semiconductor of pentacene. Improvement of this OTFT achieved the world’s highest-resolution OTFT-driven OLED display with resolution of 121 ppi and 432 x 240 x RGB (FWQVGA) pixels.

This is the world’s first demonstration of an OLED display with an integrated gate-driver circuit with OTFTs. The improvement of the OTFT described above enables integration of a flexible gate-driver circuit with OTFTs on a display panel. The roll-up capability is possible because the rigid driver IC chips has been removed from the display.

In order to enhance flexibility of the display, Sony has developed organic insulators for all the insulators in the OTFT and OLED integration circuit. These organic insulators can be formed with the solution process in the atmosphere which is requires fewer steps, and consumes materials and energy more efficiently – thus has a smaller environmental footprint – compared to the conventional high temperature vacuum semiconductor process which use inorganic/silicon materials.

The OTFT-driven OLED display with the aforementioned technologies (1-3) can reproduce moving images while rolled-up around a cylinder with a radius of 4 mm. Even after 1000 cycles of repeatedly rolling-up and stretching the display, there was no clear degradation in the display’s ability to reproduce moving images.

  • Superchips ECU remap gives BMW 135i a total 360-hp

BMW 135i 360-hp ECU remap by Superchips

The upcoming BMW M version of the 1-Series (aka M1) is expected to make some 345-hp from an updated version of the N55 engine. However, while you wait for BMW to debut an M1 (if they ever do), a company by the name of Superchips is offering a performance boosting ECU remap for the 135i model.

“Careful optimization of ignition, fuelling and turbo boost settings via combination of extensive chassis dyno testing and road validation has produced a Superchips remap that elevates the performance of the 135i onto a different plane,” Superchips says.

Click here for prices on the 2010 BMW 135i.

What kind of a different plane? An increase of 49-hp and a boost of 52 lb-ft of torque. That brings the total output of a BMW 135i to 360-hp and a maximum torque of 336 lb-ft. While Superchips has only dyno tested the car at its own headquarters, it has yet to confirm any performance figures. Either way, we expect it to be much better than the 135i’s 0-60 mph time of 5.3 seconds (top speed of 155 mph is left untouched).

Those interested in the upgrade can head over to Superchips at its UK dealer network with a total of £445.00 ($640 USD) in their pocket. Not a bad deal at all.

  • BP HAS BEGUN OPERATION TOP KILL, WATCH RIGHT HERE (BP, RIG, HAL, DRQ, TTI, CAM)

UPDATE: Lots of motion and camera movement. Looks like The Abyss. A claw-like applicator is moving toward the BOP.

Another camera angle clearly shows multiple gushers. This may confirm reports that 2-to-3 leaks have deteriorated to a chaotic leak pattern, with gas and oil breaking from the seabed floor.

Remember, it might be two days before we know if TOP KILL is working.

    PREVIOUSLY:
—–Did BP just kill the livestream? We’re seeing reports that BP was about to start inserting mud.
—–Now we’re seeing a new camera angle that shows the blowout preventer. No sign of mud application yet.
—–Operation Top Kill has commenced. You might not see much activity in the video, as BP is shooting cement at the blowout preventer, not the broken riser (pictured). But if it works…
—–Operation Top Kill has been given the green light by Rear Admiral Mary Landry, and it could start any moment. Meanwhile: glug-glug-glug-glug-glug. If it looks like the oil is gushing like mad, you’re right. They took out the siphoning tube in preparation.

  • Wait: Why Did Ron Paul Just Introduce An Extension To The Homebuyer Tax Credit?

    Ron Paul

Given Ron Paul’s thorough opposition to the government’s meddling into the economy, and the government’s inclination to blow bubbles (like housing), we’re thoroughly perplexed by this. The Congressmen from Texas is pushing for an extension to the homebuyer tax credit.

    ————-

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Ron Paul (TX-14) today introduced legislation to permanently extend the first-time homebuyer tax credit and to make the credit available to people whose homes have been destroyed by a natural disaster, such as a hurricane.

The legislation also makes a number of changes to existing tax credits in order to enhance their usefulness to victims of natural disasters. Specifically, this bill makes casualty loss deductions available to taxpayers who do not itemize, and makes it available to them for five years after the disaster. This legislation also helps people who have lost their jobs because of a natural disaster by making unemployment payments provided under the Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act tax free.

Renewing the first-time home buyer’s credit will help Americans purchase a first home with their own money, instead of having to rely on government-funded or backed programs.

The other sections of this legislation were inspired by conversations Congressman Paul and his staff had with constituents who had to purchase new homes because Hurricane Ike destroyed their prior homes.  The first-time homebuyer’s tax credit could be of tremendous value to these people, yet the law denies them the credit because they are replacing destroyed homes.

“It is hard to think of a more beneficial or compassionate expansion of the first-time homebuyer tax credit than to make the credit available to those whose homes have been destroyed or damaged by natural disasters,” stated Congressman Paul.  “In addition, the changes to the casualty loss provision will help more taxpayers affected by natural disasters.  Providing tax relief to first-time homebuyers and to those affected by natural disasters should be one of Congress’ top priorities.”

  • The Next American Idol Is – Would it be Bowersox or DeWyze – American Idol Prediction

Crystal Bowersox or Lee DeWyze’s who will stand out and be the next American Idol. The viewer is seems to be more excited than the two finalist. The performance finale last Tuesday night attracted 19.6 million total viewers, according to the well known survey company The Nielsen, down to 14.7% from the previous performance finale last year.
Our two finalist have come a long way since their audition in Chicago. Bowerbox and DeWyze after the American Idol 2010 finale will surely be moving as recording artist. But only one of them will be victorious.
Will it be Crystal Bowersox who surprise the judges in his performance “Up to the Mountain (MLK Song)” Mixing up soul and gospel and blues and folk traditions, she created something wholly fresh. Who’s to say if she’ll win “Idol.” Predict the whims of the voting public at your own peril. But there’s no doubting that Bowersox is the finest artist of season nine.  He does a good job and she really save the best for last.
On the other hand Lee DeWyze bounced back in his weak opening number with a surprisingly powerful take on this R.E.M. track. Pitch problems aside, the arrangement was on point and the song was a perfect fit for Lee’s style and vocal abilities. And seems that he is nervous which Simon Cowell notice it and called him out. Will this be a big factor for Lee in getting the crown for the next American Idol. Stay tuned for more updates.

  • US Copyright Group Says ISPs Who Don’t Cough Up User Names May Be Guilty Of Inducing Copyright Infringement

Thomas Dunlap, the lawyer who set up US Copyright Group, which mimics European operations like ACS:Law in threatening to sue tens of thousands of people on flimsy evidence in mass automated lawsuits for alleged copyright infringement if they don’t pay up, sure has some interesting legal theories. We had already noted that at least Time Warner Cable was fighting the subpoenas, and in Dunlap’s response, he’s claiming that ISPs that don’t just roll over and hand over the info open themselves up to charges of contributory copyright infringement under the Grokster standard put forth by the Supreme Court.

I can’t see how anyone could possibly find Time Warner guilty of inducement for not handing over subscriber info — especially not under the standards in the Grokster ruling. Those include that the company had to promote that its service could be used for infringement, that they failed to filter out those infringing uses when possible and that the business plan depended on a high volume of infringement. I don’t see any of those three things applying to Time Warner and not handing over customer info on subpoenas. This seems like more bluster from Dunlap to try to get Time Warner Cable to just given in and hand over the names, so he can send out letters demanding payment.

  • 547 2010 Cadillac SRX 2.8L Turbo units recalled for potential engine failure

    2010 Cadillac SRX 2.8L V6 Turbo

After Toyota being fined $16.4 million for notifying the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration too late when it comes to recalls, it seems like automakers aren’t wasting anytime in recalling vehicles with issues.

General Motors is recalling just 547 units of the 2010 Cadillac SRX models that are equipped with the 2.8L turbocharged V6 due to a potential engine failure if the owner uses regular gasoline instead of premium and drives in an aggressive manner.

Click here to get prices on the 2010 Cadillac SRX.

“The combination of regular fuel usage and aggressive driving maneuvers may induce pre-ignition,” according to NHTSA. “If pre-ignition occurs, you may hear a pinging or knocking sound from the engine. If the vehicle continues to be driven after the onset of this noise, a connecting rod or piston may break, resulting in engine damage, and perhaps engine failure, which would disable the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.”

The recall is expected to begin on June 11. Owners can contact Cadillac at 866-982-2339.

  • Hedgeye: Germany Set To Revert Downwards To The Mean

Here’s a fantastic chart showing the performance of the various equity markets in Europe. Hedgeye analyst Matthew Hedrick warns of a “contagion drag” and how as Germany is forced to foot the lion’s share of the bill for European bailouts, the situation will continue weigh on Germany’s capital markets.

Hedgeye: As part of our Q2 theme Sovereign Debt Dichotomy, we advised that one possible play on sovereign debt risk in Europe is to be paired off long Germany and short Spain.  Our bullish thesis on Germany included a tighter fiscal balance sheet than many of its European peers, the advantage of a weaker Euro for an export-heavy economy, low inflation, and a stable rate of employment. While we’ve seen significant divergence in the underlying German and Spanish equity markets over the last weeks, including a spread as wide as 2000bps between the DAX and IBEX 35 on May 7th, the increasingly larger share of the ‘bill’ that Germany will bear for the Eurozone’s collective bailout is bearish for German capital markets (see chart 1 below).

While the German unemployment rate remains positive, declining in the latest reading to 7.8% (versus the Eurozone average of 10% and 20% in Spain) and is underpinned by the government’s successful part-time labor programs, contagion from European sovereign debt risk persist despite the $1Trillion European loan/debt buy-up facility issued on 5/9. Additionally, Germany’s unilateral ban on naked short selling on 5/25 is adding fuel to the fire and enhancing market volatility.

On the margin, the fundaments we’re following in Germany and the broader stock market suggest a downward reversion to the mean, especially as risk in Europe (and globally) is pushed further out. One area to look to for confirmation of this is the bond market (chart 4), where we’re starting to see German yields rise.

  • Ford design is more ‘creative’ now that PAG brands are gone

    Ford Start Concept

Ford is all about its “kinetic” design language; however, in the past the brand has felt somewhat restricted in pushing its creativity to the limits. According to J Mays, Ford’s group vice president for design and its chief creative officer, the sale of former PAG (Premier Automotive Group) brands including Jaguar, Land Rover, Aston Martin and Volvo has allowed designers to be a little more… well “creative.”

Mays said that it was difficult to oversee the designs of several different marquees.

“It was like painting the Golden Gate Bridge. I would get to one end and the other end would already start rusting, so I’d run back and start going again,” he said. “I was an inch deep and a mile wide. I would go from one review to the next, and then start the whole thing over again.”

Mays says that since Ford dropped PAG and pursuing its global vehicle strategy, designers have been able to explore their desires in kinetic design.

“There’s a huge array of creativity afforded to our design team,” he said. “Kinetic design applies to both exteriors and interiors, but there’s a framework that keeps them inside of the brand parameters.”

The most recent example of this was seen in the Ford Start Concept.

  • Report: Bugatti has built a working 800-hp electric supercar prototype

    Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport

According to insiders at Molsheim, France, Bugatti has produced an 800-hp electric supercar prototype, which may never be displayed to the public… at least that’s what the sources told AutoExpress.

The working electric supercar Bugatti is said to be built on the chassis of a Bentley Continental GT and features an advanced lithium-ion battery pack and two huge powerful electric-motors that can deliver a neck-snapping 1,622 lb-ft of torque from 0 mph.

Why is it that we may never get to see the electric supercar from Bugatti? Insiders say that the model is being built just to study the technology and allow engineers to explore the ultimate performance available from an electric powertrain.

This isn’t the first time that Bugatti has ever built a battery-powered car. Ettore Bugatti, founder of the company, made an electric-car called the Type 56 that he used to tour around the factory in Molsheim, France.

2010 Volkswagen GTI – click above for high-res image gallery
In 1983, Run-DMC was fresh (which meant dope), Volvo 760 Turbos weighed 3,300 pounds and the 2,200-pound Volkswagen GTI made its U.S. debut. In 2010, the Rabbit-turned-Golf entered its sixth generation and attempted to draw a clear line to the first-generation car. The historical link has been made especially clear in the 2010 Volkswagen GTI, though it’s gone through the typical changes you face when you hit your 30s. The GTI is now 1,000 pounds porkier, but it’s still as slick as a greased pig when it comes to handling.

Inside, there’s plaid seat upholstery and higher-quality materials. Just like it was back in ’83, the underhood motivation is only available from a four-cylinder, a change from recent generations that could be stuffed with Volkswagen’s VR6. At a glance, the 2010 model promises to be more visceral than its direct predecessors, but does it come anywhere near the primal magic of the original, or is it just playing dress-up? Click through to the jump to find out.
